SAG, Critics Choice noms released: lots of Brangelina for the awards season!

The Critics Choice (also known as the Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards) nominations came out yesterday, and today, the Screen Actors Guild Award nominations came out. I’m not going to cover every single person, so if you’d like to see the complete lists – GO HERE for the SAG nomination list and GO HERE for the Critics Choice nomination list. Here are some general thoughts:

*Brad Pitt scored Best Actor nominations for BFCAA and SAG, both for Moneyball. It’s pretty much guaranteed that he’ll be nominated for Best Actor, once again for Moneyball. Same with George Clooney and The Descendants – he’s guaranteed a spot on the Best Actor Oscar nomination list. Same for Jean Dujardin for The Artist.

*There’s NOOOOOOO Michel Fassbender at the SAGs!!!!! Shame got shut out of the SAGs, as did A Dangerous Method. Fassy will be at the Critics Choice, though – he got a nomination there. Ryan Gosling got a Critics Choice nom for Drive, but he got shut out of the SAGs too.

*Leonardo DiCaprio got nominated for J.Edgar on both lists, but I think his support is soft. If anyone is getting knocked off the Best Actor short list, I suspect it’s him.

*Melissa McCarthy got nominated on both lists too, for Supporting for Bridesmaids. Is Melissa headed to the Oscars?!? But… for Best Supporting Actress, there is no front runner. It’s an even bigger mess. Octavia Spencer for The Help? Jessica Chastain for anything? Carey Mulligan, maybe?

*The supporting categories are a mess, no one really knows who to nominate for what. I’m assuming Christopher Plummer is the leading contender for Best Supporting Actor, but other favorites include Ken Branagh, Jonah Hill (Moneyball), Nick Nolte (Warrior), and… Patton Oswalt?

*Best Actress is a mess too, but it’s starting to shape up. I’m seeing Viola Davis, Meryl Streep, Tilda Swinton and Michelle Williams on both nomination lists. That are four strong contenders, but the fifth lady… Lizzie Olsen? Glenn Close? Charlize Theron?

*As for Best Ensembles/Best Picture nominees, my only guarantees are big nominations for The Help, The Artist, Hugo, and The Descendants. But that still leaves a lot of places and a lot of campaigning. I can’t believe how open everything is at this point in the awards season.

Well deserved nominations for William Bradley Pitt… Pitt will also be honored at the Palm Spring Festival and La Jolie and the others producers on ITLOBAH will be receiving the PGA Stanley Kramer Award

    • mln76 says:

Yes I’m so happy that Angie is getting the PGA award! It’s a big honor and the reviews have been good so far!

    • Sakyiwaa says:

lol! I dunno why… but i really like his full name too! this is soooo great! saw Moneyball! loved it! i actually forgot he was Brad Pitt…
      Yay for Angieeeeeeee!

    • olivia says:

I confess I am not an expert on the film industry. How can a film win awards when it has not even been released to the general public yet? Colour me confused.

      • mln76 says:

Olivia I am assuming you are asking a genuine question. Movies are routinely screened for critics and review boards even outside of award season. Members of the Academy and other voting bodies also recieve DVDs of movies called ‘screeners’ even of movies that were in wide release but especially of movies that had limited engagements or have yet to be released in theaters.

      • Original Chloe says:

Olivia, you don’t need to be an expert to google PGA and find out that it’s Producers Guild of America. I’m sure they’ve seen the movie before they awarded it.

The world premiere of a movie doesn’t mean that *no one* has seen it before, in fact most movies are shown to professional organizations, guilds etc. before they hit theaters.

  2. Aria says:

I cannot understand why they didn’t include Kiki Dunst in best actress category. She was outstanding in Melancholia.

  3. layla says:

The Help (besides Viola) does not deserve the accolades its getting.

  4. birdie says:

Wow, Melissa McCarthy is a real surprise! I know it will not happen, but I hope Leonardo DiCaprio wins something. After all these years he deserves it!
I am all for Michelle Williams, she is a great actress.

  5. Taylor says:

Well morally corrupt Brangelina made big job to be in media all the time in past few months. They sold a lot of private crap and spread some serious words of wisdom so they deserve some tacky award. Good job.

  6. gloaming says:

The only person I feel really strongly about winning is Nick Nolte.

He truly deserves the best supporting actor for The Warrior. He was superb in that awesome film.

I get so peed off at the better Independant films being shut out.
The ugly dresses. New jacked up faces. Brangelina shenanigans. Dirty campaign tactics.

Oh God I love Awards Season!!

  7. Diane says:

I love Melissa, she was hilarious in Bridesmaids.

  8. Mara says:

People are really obsessed with this couple is like they are the only nice looking couple in the world I am looking forward to see Charlize Theron she is also nominated she is a beauty and very talented

  9. Mina says:

    Brad for the win!!!!

  10. Love Angie. says:

If ITLOBAH was sooooo good, why aren’t reviews by critics out yet? All we hear is sycophantic crap by nobodies.

William Bradley Pitt will not win.

    • mln76 says:

I really want William Bradley Pitt to win just to see the epic meltdown from the Brange haters. They’ve been trying to say for ages that ‘The Mexican’ was the pinnacle of his career and that Hollywood hates him
      🙂

    • Nikki says:

The reviews have not come out yet bc it’s under an embargo until Monday to give all critics a chance to see it unbiased.

  11. Annie says:

The dream SAG table… All the Frenchies. Dujardin and his wife, Bejo and Michel, Cotillard and husband, Gosling and date, Carla Bruni and her French President hubby. I’ll bet Swinton speaks French too.

    • normades says:

Regarding Frenchie Dream table: Cotillard and Canet OK. Bruni and Sarko have no reason to be there. Gosling WTF?

      • mln76 says:

Actually Carla is nominated as part of the ensemble for Midnight In Paris eventhough she’s only in the darn thing for 50 seconds.

      • Annie says:

Gosling speaks French. Got to speak French at that table. And sadly, or he’d have been on the list too, Depp isn’t nominated unless he shows up for Rango. In which case, he and Vanessa need to sit there too.

They might need a booster seat or Sarko though, hahaha!

      • normades says:

I find no evidence of this. When I google “Ryan Gosling speaks French” all I get is ONE dubious site that says he does but nothing else (just tons of Bradley Cooper speaks French references). If Ryan really spoke French I’m sure I would have seen him speaking some on French TV or in youtube vids a la JGL.
I could be wrong, but this is the first I’ve heard of this.

      • Annie says:

Well, I could be wrong too, but it wouldn’t be unusual for a Canadian to speak both English and French, especially one from Eastern Canada.

  12. lily says:

Brad and Angelina deserves all these accolades. I’m happy for them and I will be in line to watch In The Land of Blood and Honey. A movie to open our eyes to all the sufferings people from that regions went through and those atrocities are still being committed around the world. Condemmed those atrocities and not Angelina Jolie.

    • Love Angie. says:

There will be no lines to watch In The Land of Blood and Honey. You can just watch it in a near empty theater.

      • mln76 says:

WOW! Such vitriol. This isn’t a commercial movie and never was intended to be such. What’s important is that it’s getting kudos as being accurate from people who lived through it and getting critical acclaim.

  13. Cerulean says:

It’s time to get my bum to a theatre and see some films. Then I can root for someone.

Shame is too controversial a subject. Award selectors are not brave enough to do it.

  14. Lena says:

I just don’t get all these ”The Help” nominations. It was an ok movie but not that great.
No Gary Oldman? No Gosling for Drive? No Shannon? What a shame!

  15. mln76 says:

It looks like Leo is getting an Oscar Nom???? I didn’t see J Edgar but the reviews were so so. For the last slot I guess its a fight between Fassy/Oldman/Shannon/Gosling? I think Fassy will get the nomination. I feel bad for Gary Oldman though he’d be my pick out of the bunch because he’s just so awesome.

    • Original Chloe says:

Oldman is the Streep of the dude club.

    • Bubulle says:

I agree, I can’t believe that someone like GC has an oscar and 3 academy award nominations under his belt while poor Gary still has yet to receive just one. How is it even possible ?

    • I LOVE Gary Oldman!!

      • truthSF says:

Me too Hanna, and it’s a damn shame he’s never been nominated for an Oscar. The man is so talented.

    • podzol says:

I can’t understand why Gary Oldman, one of the BEST actors around, keeps on being snubbed every time. It’s unfathomable. How does Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy miss out on Best Ensemble??

The Fassbender/Oldman/Shannon/Harrelson snub is terrible. Add Bichir to the bunch and there you have it: the best 2011 male performances in a movie.

      • normades says:

Agree with you all here. Leo has been nominated how many times and Gary Oldman never?

Plus Leo has very little chance of winning this year so he’ll just be going through the movements and bringing his mom as his date.

Urgh, would so rather see his spot go to Oldman or Fassie.

  16. Bermuda Blues says:

Award season is at a bit of a tailspin because the films that were really enjoyable this year are not the usual Oscar Bait. The Help and Moneyball were the most fun to watch. You left the theater feeling good.

I didn’t care for The Descendants. I think George Clooney rapidly becoming dramatically overrated.

Melancholia was beautiful. I can’t believe its not getting more attention, which makes me really sad that Lars von Trier managed to ruin that film for everyone! Kirsten Dunst was the best she’s been since the Virgin Suicides. Her skin, her eyes, her hair, her voice, the way she held herself, everything was just lovely. The film itself was dark and dramatic and hauntingly beautiful. Its so rare to see this kind of movie, especially with a female character in the central role. I’m just really bummed that von Trier couldn’t keep his trap shut.

Edit: I almost forgot – Midnight in Paris was romantic and charming.

I think Midnight in Paris and Moneyball and Melancholia all deserve love, but for political reasons they will not take home Best Picture.

    • lucy2 says:

I LOVED Midnight in Paris – and I’m not a Woody Allen fan. Glad to see it get some notice.
I really want to see Melancholia, just haven’t yet.
I liked the Descendants as a little character study movie, but think the hype is undeserved.

  17. LavenderLava says:

They are good decent people with amazing talent and its long overdue for them to be recognized.

  18. Original Chloe says:

Side note on In the Land of Blood and Honey: “Earlier this week producers were faced with a potential lawsuit from James Braddock, a Croatian author claiming that the script plagiarized his 2007 novel “The Soul Shattering.” He has since withdrawn his motion for a restraining order against the film.”

  19. Manuela says:

they missed only 1 point Fassy had to be added.

  20. Marianne says:

This won’t happen, but I would love if JGL swooped in and got an oscar nod for 50/50. He was amazing in that. I also want an oscar nod for Ryan Gosling (either Drive or The Ides of March). Havent seen Shame, but I still want an oscar nod for Fassy as well. I lurved him in Jane Eyre and XMen this year. I also want an oscar nod for Harry potter for Best Picture. *Fingers Crossed*. It would be awesomesauce if Alan Rickman jumped in and got an oscar nod as well, but it probably wont happen either. You never know though, sometimes the oscars pull out a surprise or two.

And I like Melissa Mccarthy as a person, but I personally thought “bridesmaids” was overrated. And I didnt think Melissa was the funniest either.

  21. YAY!!! In The Land of Blood and Honey, won the Stanley Kramer award.I’m thrilled for Jolie. Her hard work is paying off.Her film is getting praise all over the internet.People are taking notice, and seeing for themselves what a strong woman she is.I’m sure this is exciting for Jolie, the cast, and everyone invovled. And Zana Marjanovic is gorgeous!!(oh and,I’m not sure, but I read somewhere Brad has a cameo in the movie. He’s the first soldier running who gets shot.)I could have read it here???But,don’t ask me for a link, because HorsePoor Hanna doesn’t do links.

  22. Heine says:

This year hasn’t been good for Oscar bait films. Everyone was trying to make money instead of interesting films because if the economic downturn. That’s just my thought though, it could have been other stuff.

It’s just odd to me that the field is soooo open at this point. Usually the categories have people getting pushed off the ticket but now we have a situation where people aren’t sure who to put on the damn thing.

    Anyone else have any theories?

    • Sakyiwaa says:

I agree with your theory… the ‘really strong performance’ base is a little bit too diffused this year. everybody knew Colin Firth was gonna pick it up last year…

But this turn of events might actually make the Oscars more intriguing this year…

      No one’s a lock…

    • mln76 says:

J.Edgar was Oscar bait it just fell flat. I have to say I hate baity movies that are but just clicking off the notches on what it takes for an Oscar worthy performance. The King Speech was good and I love Colin but I did feel manipulated and I think he deserved to win the year before so whatever. That’s why I personally didn’t like The Descendants you could see the notches going off in Clooney’s head-must cry in this scene, must look idiotic running, must tell an inappropriate joke to look edgy and on and on.

  23. nan says:

Yeah!!! I sooooo want Brad to take it ALL this awards season!! Crossing my fingers for him!!!

  24. teri says:

Very happy with Brad and Angelina getting so much buzz.

  25. Amanda G says:

Am I the only one who didn’t really care for The Help? Most of the characters were one-dimensional. Maybe I have to see it again?

I hope Melissa wins everything she’s nominated for. She was the best part of Bridesmaids!

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m tired of 30 Rock always winning and getting nominated. I tried really hard to get into it because I love Tina Fey, but it just isn’t that great.

    • mln76 says:

I didn’t care for it either it was filled with trite tropes about race that were downright insulting. BUT the cast is filled with vets who have consistently given great performances and the Academy can be PC by having a token movie about race so yes this is the Blind Side of this year.

    • Mel says:

      Nope, you are not.

  26. lucy2 says:

I always root for the newbies and tragically under-appreciated when it comes to nominations, so I’m really excited to see Melissa McCarthy, Kyle Chandler, and a few other nice surprises.

  27. spinner says:

Brides Maids was a bad movie. It was not funny or well done. I do have to say though, if there was ANYTHING about that movie that was redeeming, it was Melissa McCarthy.

    • lisa says:

I think that is why she got the nom. She was the least known and she is the one that stood out for the audience. It is how STARS are made. That one performance that makes people say.. “Who was that”. I just hope she is able to ride the buzz for a long time.

Love that top picture of Brad/Angie. So glad Angie’s film is getting such great buzz. I’m sure there will be some negative, but whatever. Her first film.. written, directed, produces.. getting this notice.

well let’s hear it for the GIRL..

Like them or not.. this is going to actually be a STAR STUDDED awards year. Has not happened in a long time.

  28. hatekyle says:

Why is the hottest woman of all time not in any of the acting awards lists? Oh wait, there’s no RomCom Awards.

    • Julia says:

      a) the backlash of hottest star prevented her to buy another award

      b) the price of the bribe was too high

      c) not enough members were easily bribed

      d) members cannot be bribed one way or another

      e) she knows there are no award for aspiring James Bond girls

      • lisa says:

there was only a slight buzz about her performance. I think it was more that she did something different. But the critics were not over the moon about it.

Her fans were expecting a nomination. I guess they may have to wait for Wanderlust next year.

    • Annie says:

Horrible Bosses is a Critics Choice nomination.

  29. sandy says:

go brad!!, so happy for him and the jolie, they deserve this, they earned it the old fashion way, talent and very hard work, i hope brad take it this year, fingers crossed also.

  30. ANONYMOUS says:

Angie needs to stay home she is always all over that man. Give Brad Pitt a break with all those kids and herself she has glumbed on to Brad like white on rice and he ain’t her huband!

  31. ??? says:

I love them, but he looks so GD DIFFERENT!! WTH is going on here? Is the reason he had the sunglasses and beard for so long to cover up face work or was he just replaced with an imposter?? Shennanigans!
