Rooney Mara in shiny black Louis Vuitton: glamour goth & pretty?

I already covered the photos of Daniel Craig in Paris last night, for the premiere of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. This post is just about Rooney Mara. First, let’s talk about the fashion. Rooney Mara’s premiere look was Louis Vuitton, and it’s maybe my favorite thing she’s worn this whole publicity tour. It’s cute, it’s flirty, it’s age-appropriate, and it’s still got some glamour-goth vibes. I’ve grown to really dislike this girl, but I have to give her credit on this one – she got it right for this carpet. Very cute. I get the feeling that Rooney wants very badly to be a “fashion girl” but she doesn’t know how to reconcile her Fashion Girl yearnings with her new, adopted Lisbeth Salander persona. What Would Lisbeth Do? Lisbeth would not wear Louis Vuitton. But I like that Rooney tried it.

And yes, that’s David Fincher on her other side. Do you think they’re doing it? I have my doubts. I think she sees him as her God and Creator. You don’t want to bone your God. That being said, if you told me that Fincher and Mara were boning, I wouldn’t be surprised. I just think that whatever is going on, he’s in total control. And that’s kind of creepy.

As for Rooney and her future in Hollywood… I don’t know. As much as I want to reiterate that this girl needs to be told some hard truths about professionalism and not taking a dump on her early career moves, I can’t say definitively that Rooney’s comments have gotten wide enough coverage to really affect her career in the long-term. Although GWTDT hasn’t performed as well as expected (I liked the film in general, but I thought it was poorly edited, amongst other complaints), The Wrap confirms that the two sequels are already being prepared.

The Wrap spoke to an unnamed Sony rep who said that Steve Zaillian is on to adapt to The Girl Who Played With Fire, and that Daniel Craig and Rooney are contractually obliged for two more films. Although Slash Film raised the red flag about Sony possibly getting another director to helm the sequel, it’s looking like Fincher will likely be back. So… Rooney is guaranteed another job.

Kaiser you actually like that dress? To me it’s hideous, and looks like it’s cheaply made. But then again, it is a Louis Vuitton, so that’s probably why it looks so cheap.

  2. Marianne says:

She might need some PR skills but she is stunning. Plus I loved her as Lisbeth.

  3. Megan says:

The dress is good, but how about some accessories and a pedicure?

    • hatsumomo says:

I noticed that right away! Why isnt her nails and toenails done?! Even I, a regular Jane Doe, take care to make sure my toenails are trimmed and painted and my nails are neat. And one last nitpick, maybe Mara could’ve added some earrings at the very least? If you’re going to wear high-fashion, add some jewelry at the very least!

  4. lucy2 says:

The dress is OK but nothing all that special.
She looks very pretty in the close up.

  5. carrie says:

she’s less gothy than usually, she looks pretty even if it’s too dark in my opinion

OMG Fincher almost is smiling(his cowlick is too cute but he needs to lose a few weight) whereas Gaig ‘s smiling

  6. Tapioca says:

I like this look the best so far, and we may criticise her for criticising her earlier work, but someone has to do it now Megan Fox has sunk into oblivion!

And did you know that David Fincher shares a bat-shit crazy, smack-head ex-wife with Gary Oldman? That’s your fact for the day.

    • carrie says:

you talk about Linda Fiorentino a lookalike of Angelina Jolie (in my opinion)
and do you know it’s Fincher who raises their daughter after the divorce (like Gary Oldman and his sons)?

  7. Melbeezy says:

    Wow, knock-kneed much?

  8. Anguishedcorn says:

Damn, I want to hate her, but she’s gorgeous.

  9. normades says:

She looks cold (it’s freezing in Paris).

She’s pretty when she smiles. I can’t wait for this promo stuff to be over so she can stop wearing the goth stuff. Then we’ll really see what her (true) style is.

  10. Val says:

It looks like she’s channeling Audrey Hepburn.

  11. kiko says:

    what no pedicure?fail…

  12. Micah says:

    She looks fantastic!

She did do a great job with the character.

  13. Liz says:

It’s not so much that she annoys me (much) as that I (kind of) worry about her.

Yes, she’s lovely looking and wears nice clothes, but that’s par for the course in Hollywood. The fact remains that she gets one – one! – standout role and she’s already turning into a diva.

Most people might not be paying too much attention to her interviews, but you can bet industry insiders are. Not only does it suggest deep immaturity and nastiness (which won’t help her career) but it could stop her ever making friends in the industry. And every actress needs those.

Would you hire her, if you thought she’d crap all over the project afterwards? Would you hire someone for, say, a big commercial franchise, if you knew she considered “genre” films beneath her?

She’s running the risk of antagonising industry insiders, and annoying the kind of film/gossip buffs who pay close attention to these kind of interviews.

Why would a big producer want to hire someone who has annoyed the people who are most likely to actually go to a cinema and pay to watch?

Which is a shame, because her version of Lisbeth is very good. And the dress is lovely.

    • ahoyhoy says:

EXACTLY, Liz. Producers & directors DO NOT miss this stuff.
They have thousands of pretty young actresses to choose instead.

    • Cherry Rose says:

Well, we’ll have to put up with Rooney for a while. She’s got two more movies as Lisbeth after this. Though I’m pretty sure that they’re both going to bomb, if GWTDT didn’t do too well at the box office.

But yes, talking bad about your earlier roles is a sure way not to get hired. But Rooney needs to remember that she auditioned for those roles that she now detests. If she though the movie or show was going to be stupid and horrible, why the’s point of auditioning for it?

      • Green_Eyes says:

Well put Cherry Rose. Megan Fox was signed for 3 Transformers and well look how she got dumped…

  14. Laurie M. says:

Why is her head crooked down in almost every picture? Does she stand/walk that way all the time?
I just cannot like her after thr recent comments she made about her previous work.

    • Liz says:

      I think it’s a mixture of things.

      (1) The closeup on her own is probably down to camera angles. It looks like it’s being taken from a slightly elevated angle.

      (2) In the pictures with Fincher and Craig, the men are looking upwards as, say, stage actors are trained to do. There’s nothing particularly unusual about Mara’s head position; it’s just that it looks downcast in comparison.

She looks much more normal in the picture where she’s with the men and smiling, because their heads are a little lower and hers is a little higher.

That’s down to inexperience and not knowing how to position oneself in photographs without a photographer bossing you around. Finch and Craig know about these things. She doesn’t – which makes her attitude in those interviews a bit funny.

      (3) The first and last pictures look like average-to-bad posture to me, exacerbated by the cold. (She’s trying not to hunch up to keep herself warm.)

I think the woman beside her is a handler of some sort taking her to the red carpet – so she’s not “on duty” yet and hasn’t started posing. People rarely look their best in photos without posing.

If you look closely, you’ll see the handler has taken her coat from her, so Mara has just been hit by a gust of cold, cold air. I want to teach Mara the Alexander Technique, but I don’t judge her for the position of her head in the pictures.

  15. NotaBitterBetty says:

Don’t like the shoes but the dress is great. I’m over the red lip thing she’s got going though, would be nice to see her in different makeup for a change.

@Liz, I totally agree. One big movie and she’s already running her mouth. I shudder to think what she’ll be like if she ever gets Julia Roberts-type success.

  16. for real? says:

I refused to see this flim, kinda felt like it would tarnish the image i have for the books and all three of the original movies, then she started talkin shit about all her other roles so that made me really dislike this chick. ( as for her outfit, i think it looks ok, not great! as with all her other looks including her face she looks like a typical stuck up bitch to me).

  17. gail says:

What’s with the comments about her feet? I don’t get it – is it now inappropriate for women to expose their feet if their toenails are unpainted? Unpainted nails =/= dirty or unkempt.

Anyway, I like the upscale goth style she has going. It definitely makes her stand out from other actresses her age, and the consistency gives her a very defined aesthetic that people will associate with her.

Her comments are not going to affect her at all because she didn’t trash anyone with any real power. When she starts dissing Fincher or other powerful directors/producers, then we’ll have an actual story.

Also, you could drive a bus full of kittens & baby seals straight into a tree containing the nests of 200 endangered eagles, and still get work in Hollywood if you’ve got “buzz” and people think you’ve got the potential to be a bankable star. You can punch your wife in the face, sexually harass your co-workers, & rack up DUIs and continue to get roles.

Being an a-hole is not an impediment to a Hollywood career.

    • Green_Eyes says:

Very true that being an A-hole does not cut ur career in Hhollywood….if your a man. Up and coming woman …still another story.

  18. RobN says:

I think she looks pretty fantastic, actually. She doesn’t look like every other young actress out there.

Two things, I don’t think she’s under the spell of David Fincher. She grew up around incredibly rich and powerful men and I find it hard to believe that she’d be so overwhelmed by this guy that she would turn into the little robot girl that many seem to be implying.

Secondly, the very idea that you can’t show your feet unless you’re wearing polish is absolutely ridiculous. Her feet look perfectly nice and if that’s your new standard, you’d better move somewhere where it’s cold all year round or you’re going to be screaming Fail! at women all day long.

  19. jellian says:

It’s Like how James Franco started to diss the Oscars script writing , his teacher failing him but he is already famous ! She is not that well known she should really be careful of what she says. With beauties like the Angelinas and the Scarjos getting offers she should really look herself in the mirror and relize that she only has her limited skills. She has no looks and her acting was okay in this reamke , not brilliant. She won’t be winning an Oscar or SAG anytime soon.

    • V says:

LOL! no looks? That girl is beautiful, go have another glass of IwishIwasevenhalfasprettyasthisgirl-ade

      • Green_Eyes says:

In these photos her face is flawless and stunning. I agree she looks very Audrey Hepburnish. in a town of everything fake and over done from boobs to lips.. She’s got a classic timeless beauty that money can’t buy. But even that kind of beauty is tarnished when bashing your past work that NOONE forced you into….

  20. Laura Seymour says:

This girl is weird looking and what’s with her wearing black all the time? She needs to tone it down a bit. I heard this movie failed at the box-office. No wonder. Americans should get off their couches and take in intrest in the world. They will watch a movie only if it has Americans or spoken in english.

    • RobN says:

You make no sense. You say it’s no wonder this movie failed at the box office because Americans should get off their couches and take an interest in the world and will only see movies in English. Well, this movie was in English so how does your statement make any logical sense at all?

    • duncecap says:

I’m confused. How will getting my american ass off the couch and into a theater seat show me the world? You’re just exchanging one form of mental and physical laziness for another. I’m sure this movie has been made with competent hands all around, but it’s not a crash course in awareness or worldly sophistication in and of itself.

Join the peace corps. Yeah, that should be international enough. But do they do any sitting?

As for this actress chick, it seems like she’s trying to be the character and letting it steamroll her rl personality. Sad.

  21. Angela Evanstaling says:

There will come a day where she trashed the wrong person , and it will cost her movie offers , brand enodorsements , oppertunites like future directing if thats of intrest to her. She is riding on her high horses. No one wants to work with someone who acts lke a snob and a child . Not co-stars , not directors, not producers. No brand comapany will have someone not well liked as their ambassador. No studios will give her money to make a movie. She should quit at it while she can.

  22. Leo says:

Who is she ? and why does she make comments like ” I did not want the part but I knew I would get it “? “It was stupid , awful my chacrter was poorly written” What’s next she gonna diss Lisabeth Salander , say she is “poorly written”? Man actresses , someone of them do not deserve to be in Hollywood. She deserves to work in the sewers or be a janitor in schools , perfect for her. She talks garbage and should clean it up.

  23. Marble says:

She ruined the movie and looked too thin to play LS , can’t wait for her to say the wrong thing and she ends up dissapearing!

    • V says:

Did you read the books? LS was described as very thin and looking very young. In my opinion Mara fit the part better physically than Rapace did. Rapace was much too old when she filmed the originals, and LS is supposed to be, what, 22? 24? and she was supposed to look maybe 16 according to the book… Mara looked the part and I thought her acting was pretty damn good. I thought Rapace played it almost too tough. Too hard. Yes, LS was supposed to be a badass, but she was also supposed to possess a certain vulnerability.
As far as her comments to the press about her earlier movies… she’s talking about movies like that Elm Street trash she did. Can you really blame her for trying to distance herself from that nonsense in pursuit of a more serious acting career?

      • SEF says:

Marbles – It’s ok if you didn’t like the movie. But I think it’s the book you should take issue with if complaining that Salander was too skinny.

Crucial to the books is that Salander is super skinny and scrawny, such that men repeatedly think they can take advantage of her (and then . . . whomp, she brings the hammer down). The small, boyish appearance was crucial and I think Mara nailed it.

      • duncecap says:

You know the saying. By the time an actress is experienced enough to play Juliet she’s cast as the maid instead.

  24. Sasha says:

She’s a beauty! And I agree with the poster who said there’s some Audrey Hepburn going on there. It’s a shame that there isn’t a similar personality to match.

  25. MerryHappy says:

Love that dress and want it on my body. I don’t like her, someone else picked that dress for her, so bah humbug, I am not complimenting this C U Next Tuesday.

  26. Mi says:

WOW her skin looks gorgeous here. Do love the dress, very appropriate.

  27. REDSLIP says:

Again, fart in the wind, trying super hard to be Audry, in 3 months when someone says “Rooney” people will assume they are talking about Mickey or Andy.

  28. kerker says:

This is her best look so far, not sure that’s saying much fashion-wise. She has beautiful skin and the makeup is pretty close to perfect.

  29. SEF says:

As for Rooney Mara – I feel this is her first big moment in the spotlight, plus she was probably put through the ringer from filming the movie. So the interviews are coming out badly. She did great in the movie, so I’d suggest we give her a little more time to get better at the interview game.

  30. Camille says:

Its her best look so far, but I don’t care for this girl.

  31. Maya says:

Wrong shoes. These shoes appear to be too casual for the type of event and dress and she’s very pasty, so a pair of pantyhose would have done the trick.

  32. T.C. says:

not feeling the dress but she looks pretty.

  33. Original Bee says:

Cue the multiple Vogue spreads, here comes Anna Wintour’s new pet. Thin, pale and edgy without being too threatening is how “Nuclear Wintour.” likes em’

  34. Amy says:

She’s so plain. Her face is utterly unremarkable.

  35. JaneWonderfalls says:

She actually looks halfway descent in this photo, I like her makeup and dress, it suits her. See I’m turning over a new leaf this 2012 year….

  36. DD says:

She is gorgeous, and a great actress!

  37. Ye Vernema says:

To LR, RobN ,duncep Most people in US or Canada don’t watch foriegn movies. Even if it’s dubbed in english. You guys aren’t aware of diffrent movies in diffrent countires. I can’t belive on person wrote that Mara was better than Rapace! But then again people of lesser intelligence come on this site start to trash others for saying their opinion , even when they are not saying anything bad or wrong.

  38. marina says:

LOL who thinks Rooney is pretty? I agree with the person who said she can’t compete with the likes of Angelina or Scarlett. She doesn’t know how to talk either. She seems ungrateful for all her past jobs. She looks plain without all of this Lisebeth makeup and clothes.
So far on all of her covers and premires she has come dressed as Lisebeth , not Rooney. I mean you never saw Kirsten Dunst coming on Vogue dressed like Mary Jane Watson , or Orlando Bloom dressed like Legolas on mens magazines.

  39. ems says:

Not only is she an ungrateful snob, she is a TERRIBLE actress. One of the worst! The real Lisbeth is giggling to herself at what a feeble attempt at playing her while gnawing at her sauerkraut.
