Gary Oldman, Oscar nominee: “I don’t have a publicist. I like my hidey-hole.”

To be perfectly blunt, I’ve always considered Gary Oldman to be “the sh-t” and have noted before (within a Pajiba column) that he “just might be too bloody adept for his own good” and that his consistently impressive acting skills leave “precious little room for improvement.” Indeed, Oldman may have (unwittingly?) indulged in a very shambolic personal life for decades, but his career work has always been stellar. Lately too, he seems to have gathered himself on the family front after having been married for three years to Alexandra Edenborough (jazz singer Alex Eden), with whom he now raises to young sons. Of course, Alex is Oldman’s fourth wife, a fact to which he admits is nothing worth bragging about, but hopefully she will be the final wife. Now Oldman sits down with the LA Times for an interview about Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy that was conducted before he (finally) received his first Oscar nomination. It’s about time, right?

On Playing Many Wild Characters: “[T]ypecasting got its grip on me in the ’90s. I did those two rather extraordinary cartoon characters for Luc Besson in Leon: The Professional and The Fifth Element, and then I began to be perceived as crazy, manic, like a circus freak. That to me was just one book in the library of Gary Oldman, but you’re just asked to write it again and again.”

On Toning It Down: “It’s a big ship to turn around. You have to find the right vehicle. I became a single dad and had the responsibility of bringing up two boys, and I chose to be a father who was around. That coincided with a shift in the Industry. A lot of productions were being exported. All of a sudden, American productions were going overseas for tax breaks, so certain options were closed to me, because I couldn’t be somebody living out of a suitcase. And that’s when Harry Potter fell from the sky, shortly followed by Batman, two of the biggest franchises in cinema history. It was wonderful not only to be a part of it, but I was earning a little more than in indie movies, and I got to be home with the kids.”

On Why He Never Gets Oscar Nominations (until now): “Don’t know. I’ve never pushed myself much in that regard. I don’t have a publicist. I like my hidey-hole.”

Having A Deadbeat Dad Influenced His Acting: “Yeah, and I guess it’s influenced my relationships with women as well. I have been a bit disastrous in that area. It took until my fourth time, I’m not proud to say. I recently remarried, and though it’s taken me a long time, as we say in England, I’ve found a cracker.”

On How A Public Divorce Feels: “Pretty filthy. But I’ve gotten used to it. It’s that old saying that whatever people think of me is none of my business. You learn that something you might react to as an eight on the Richter scale–now it’s a tremor. I think that just comes with age and knowing what is important. When I’m at home, I want my focus taken up with my family, and I don’t want to fill the hard drive with bulls–t. But easier said than done.”

[From LA Times]

There’s more to the interview — and it’s well worth a read if you fancy Oldman in any shape or form — including how he got beat up by some extras (who were real-life punks) on the set of Sid & Nancy because they were really upset that anyone would dare to play Sid Vicious. Ultimately, Oldman was brilliant in that role despite that little hitch, but he’s good at everything from character acting to the straight-man roles that he’s favored lately. Hell, he is even captivating while reading the (admittedly disgusting) plot from last week’s episode of “Jersey Shore” during an episode of “Jimmy Kimmel.”
It’s a discombombulating performance and about on par with Christopher Walken reading the lyrics to Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face.” Quite disturbing, really.

Also, Oldman really knows how to wear the hell out of a suit.

Loved Gary Oldman since Dracula. His acting skills are so good, most of the time you forget that it’s him playing the character…Love it.

    • Eleonor says:

Me too! He was pure hotness in that movie.

    • Misspdx says:

Oh holy Hell! Dracula for life. He killed it.. Too bad Winona was so horrible as Mina.. I just try and block her out during those scenes and imagine someone like Isabella Rosallini doing the role instead. Sigh.

      • gg says:

I hear ya. She would’ve ruined the movie if not for him. Her acting is horribly wooden. I keep waiting for her to get better, and it ain’t happening.

He was the hippest Dracula EVER. The styling and clothes for that movie were spectacular! Love him in everything he does. To me he is the epitome of character acting.

    • phlyfiremama says:

All the way back to “Sid & Nancy” for me! By far, he is one of the finest actors currently alive today~he BECOMES his character so utterly, Gary Oldman himself disappears. The fact that he HASN’T been nominated before this says everything that needs to be said about the academy…

    • Camille (The original) says:

God I adored him as Dracula :).

He is truly a brilliant actor and it would be perfect if he finally won an Oscar this year. *fingers crossed*

      • truthSF says:

Fingers crossed for me too, Camille. I will scream like a banshee if he wins.

      • Camille (The original) says:

I imagine I will be wearing a big stupid grin myself if he wins hehe.
Quite an exciting Oscar race this year- finally!

  2. Tapioca says:

    Ah, Gary – I ♥ U, let me count the ways…

Except Lost in Space, obviously, but it doesn’t hurt a man not to be too perfect!

    • lilybilly says:

Oh I am so with you on that one! Lost in Space… Where to begin? “I will seize power and control through a legion of spidaaaahs” *shoots self in mouth*

But everything else he has ever done completely erases that little blip. Even in b-films like Chattahoochee, he’s just breathtaking.

  3. fancyamazon says:

LOVE Gary Oldman. Just posted the quote about everyone’s opinion πŸ™‚

  4. gee_gee says:

I would, Gary. A thousand times.

  5. Julie says:

yes his skill in his craft makes him almost disappear in movies. i have set there with dvd boxes of a movie i watched and wondered “gary oldman” where the hell was he in that movie? and then it hit me “oh he was THAT guy?” with other actors i most of the time cant really focus on the character but more on “is he/she convincing in the role?” but with oldman i just think there is a real police officer in the movie.

really talented and i hope he finally wins an oscar. the interviews and campaignsare nice gossip but i really want him to win because of his talent and not because someone invites journalists to his home.

    • Zelda says:

That’s exactly the problem. People forget about Gary Oldman, because they remember the Dracula, or the Commissioner Gordon, or the Lee Harvey Oswald…

He is my favourite actor of all time for that very reason, but it is also why he gets overlooked. He’s TOO good.

Also, he has worked, so far as I can tell, on EVERY SINGLE POSITION on a film set. Key grip, camera man, etc. And not just years ago–rather recently. Either to get to know the process better, or because why not, or whatever rad reason he had for doing it.

      He is awesome.

    • podzol says:

Yes x 10000. Gary deserves an Academy award, probably even five of them. Plus, it’d be vindicating to see his soft-campaigning seeing the light of victory.

    • cc23 says:

You’re absolutely right, he does just disappear into roles.

I loved the HP series, read the books, saw all the movies in the theater. I also love Gary Oldman. But I just realized (literally) a MONTH ago (after someone else pointed it out) that he plays Sirius Black.

  6. Cel says:

In my humble opinion he is the best actor of his generation.

Actors shouldn’t need publicists – their work should stand on its own.

  7. demian bichir says:

If Demian BICHIR dosn’t get an oscar i think i’m going to cut a B*.

But the pill is going to be a less bitter if GARY O gets it,i must admit.

Take a look at me i deserve to win!!! The the media don’t cover me because i’m the most sexy, they’re scared of me!!!Give me a chance!!!

I’m the one in the middle ,the best dressed(look at my belt),the less fakey and botoxy!!!

    • CG says:

I haven’t seen Tinker Tailor or The Artist, but I’ve seen the other three best actor nominees’ movies, and I have to admit, I’m kind of rooting for Demian Bichir now. Just saw A Better Life last week and it was AMAZING! And DB was so good in it (and looked pretty hot in that gardener’s uniform too!). So you have at least one person in your corner. πŸ™‚

      • demian bichir says:

Thank you CG!!!It gives me hope that my work is still appreciated in a way!!!
I haven’t campaigned hard at it like Brad, the Clown and Dujard but that doesn’t mean i’m out of the race.
        I’m talented give me a chance y’all !!!

I luv GARY O,i really found a new respect for him after reading certain comments about him in this tread.
The guy respects his craft that’s for sure.

      • CG says:

I just read over at Lainey that DB got the biggest round of applause at the Oscar luncheon, so there might be hope yet! πŸ™‚

      • demian bichir says:

I already saw all the photos where he gets a STANDING OVATION from HWOOD(i think it’s for not playing along with the game of campaiging hard like all the others).
They were all amazed because he still has his pants on and trust me that thing is not very common in HWOOD.

But thanks to you CG, i went to LAINEY and i learned that that monster HARVEY has hit on my guy.

BACK OFF WEINSTEIN!BICHIR IS MY GUY!OK!
Who the F* told you to support DUJARDN1
        should be fired by now.

  8. M3l says:

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is an amazing film. Seen it 3 times now and picked up something different every time, Gary is brilliant as Smiley.

Thought it might get more Oscar love but I hoping will sweep up at the BAFTAs. Also hope the whole cast turn up because their a pretty lot! πŸ˜€

    • Rubenesque says:

I agree! I just saw Tinker Tailor this weekend and it was fabulous. The pacing seems slow at first but the movie is enthralling once you get into it. It feels more like a 1970’s movie, but maybe that’s because when we think “spy” movie we think “Bourne” now. Oldman as Smiley was perfect.

    • Lara says:

I watched it last night for the first time and at the beginning I thought I was bored but by the end I was literally at the edge of my seat, it’s the type of film that creeps up on you and drags you into the story. Plus it has many hot men in it…

    • Totally. TTSS was the best film of 2011 for me. It perfectly captures the enigmatic tone of the spy world in the Cold War era. Oldman turns in an impeccable, sphinx-like performance in it. Very smart adaptation.

  9. Sophie says:

    LOVE LOVE LOVE HIM

  10. Monkey Jim says:

He was one of my first crushes, and he has outlasted every single one of them… Johnny, Keanu, Brad (and errrr Christian Slater, oy!). Happy sighs ahhhhhhhh

    • MacScore says:

OMG – you just listed just about all of my “old crushes” too!! (Christian Slater – how embarrassing is that, now?) But – Gary Oldman has always been a BRILLIANT actor, completely inhabiting a role. And he looks amazing. Love him, can’t wait to see TSSS.

  11. Jessica says:

Holy Crap, how I adore Gary Oldman. He is just so much amazing.

  12. Jackie says:

it would be so satisfying if he won the oscar. love me some oldman.

    • JudyJudyJudy says:

I havent seen any of the movies other than brief clips, but I agree. which means that he will get an oscar for some dreck next year because they cheated him this year. (echoes of Firth)

  13. Lini says:

I’d love it if Sirius Black got an oscar. He’s always been my favorite in Harry Potter and I love him in Batman too. Haven’t seen TTSS yet but I really want to!

  14. Alaina says:

Ir rarely gets mentioned but Gary is also a fine director/producer/writer. Nil by Mouth (1997) his directorial debut, won huge acclaim for him and shedloads of national and international awards, not least BAFTA’s best film and best screenwriter awards. He is a serious all-rounder.

  15. TXCinderella says:

I have loved him since Bram Stokers Dracula. He is a very good actor that has been overlooked for far too long. Glad he is finally getting the accolades he deserves.

  16. Cody says:

I think Gary Oldman is a wonderful actor. I love this year he is not campaigning for the Oscar, unlike George or Brad. You either like his work or you don’t, he doesn’t need a publicist following him around the way Stan is always following George around.

  17. Becky says:

Speaking of wearing the hell out of a suit… Gary ditched the Golden Globes for a Prada walkway. My kind of man.

    http://nymag.com/daily/fashion/2012/01/gary-oldman-prefers-prada-to-the-golden-globes.html

  18. ruokmiss? says:

the man is just brilliant. love playing ‘where’s gary?’ (like ‘where’s waldo?’) when i watch his movies. πŸ™‚ also, i respect how he’s running his campaign. he’s such a class act. hope he wins. he deserves to.

  19. JM says:

Gary Oldman is such an awesome actor!! He becomes whatever character he’s playing and you forget you’re watching Gary and believe you’re seeing Dracula, Sid, Sirius, Zorg, Oswald and the list goes on and on. I could care less what his personal life is because I don’t consider him a celebrity. He does his job and does it well and I hope his hard work finally pays off with an Oscar.

  20. mln76 says:

I love him my favorite Oldman movie is Immortal Beloved he broke my f’ing heart in that one.

  21. Aiobhan says:

I remember watching him in Dracula but really fell in love with him with Leon and TFE and have been following his films ever since. The fact that this is his first nomination is both shocking and sad. But, to be honest, I am still torn between him and Dujardin ftw.

  22. gloaming says:

His marriage history is really checkered, between marrying Uma Thurman when she was 19, to the drama he had with his third wife and the custody battle he eventually won, I was surprised he’d gotten married again.
It makes me think he’s a romantic which makes me love him more.

  23. lucy2 says:

Incredible actor, and I love his attitude towards the whole thing.
Haven’t seen TTSS yet, but I’d love for him to win just out of general appreciation for his work.

  24. Chickie Baby says:

ADORE! Have adored him since he chewed the scenery as Dracula, but he was great in “Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead” before that.

He’s one of the greatest—and it doesn’t matter how many times he’s been married. He brings is onscreen every single time.

  25. Original Chloe says:

Okay, first things first: I adore Oldman.
Second: Don’t tell me he hasn’t got a game.

  26. almond says:

Brilliant and incredibly talented man! I’ve loved him since I saw The Professional and everything ever since. Plus, he has aged so darn well, I would jump him without a second thought.

  27. Lisa says:

I’ve been following Gary since he played Sid (the movie played at the theater I worked at “The Fine Arts” theater in Chicago…they decided to hire me since I LIVED there!…I remember I went into a TIZZY when I first worked there…because there was “Sid & Nancy in 1986 and “Prick up your ear” in 1987 and they would play movies for YEARS!!!)

    LOVE HIM!!!

  28. JudyJudyJudy says:

awesome in harry potter. he is the only actor I would allow to re do george smiley. anyone else would suck.

    • Asli says:

I kept thinking about were I’d seen him before but couldn’t remember. Your comment made me remember. Thanks! And I actually had a crush on Sirius Black but Gary looks nothing like the character. Kind of like Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbien.

      • JudyJudyJudy says:

check out “Romeo is bleeding”. Awesome. He also made a movie about his background in England – cant remember the name but it was pretty unpleasant. He has come a long way indeed.

  29. CTgirl says:

That video is disturbingly brilliant πŸ˜‰

  30. Jules says:

He’s one of my favorite actors, and like Uma, I probably would have married him at 19 if given the chance…and divorced him as well, ofcourse.

  31. I Choose Me says:

I have been a fan of this man for ages. I absolutely love him.

  32. anonymoose says:

    Gary –> molto bene!

[psst….typo alert re spelling of “discombombulating” sh/be “discombopulating” or sometimes “discombobulating”]

thanks for the fine photos and scoop!

  33. Tara says:

Loved him in Sid n Nancy and Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead. Great interview too πŸ™‚

  34. Kristen says:

    I love Gary Oldman. Love.

  35. Abby says:

I’ve been in love with him since Sid & Nancy. And how much fun was he to watch in True Romance??

  36. Nan209 says:

If you haven’t seen Tinker, Tailor, soldier spy…Go! It was his best performance ever. He was so cool, so deep….I was glued.

  37. maxwell says:

love gary. he’s been a hobby of mine since rosencrantz. more please!!

  38. Bird says:

Love, love, love him. Glad to see Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead getting some love, too. And was there ANYTHING hotter than GO as Dracula?

  39. UKHels says:

without doubt the finest actor of his generation PERHAPS of all time in my opinion

even with the likes of DDL you still know it’s DDL ‘acting’, but not my Gary – why can’t they all be like him?

do you know anyone who doesn’t like him? well do you? πŸ™‚

  40. Maya says:

I’ll be disappointed if they give the Oscar to a ‘silent’ actor who basically came out of nowhere. Gary FTOW.

  41. original sandy says:

i like gary also, it does not cancel out any one else, gary is a great actor, who had a questionable personal past, which no one was privy to. every one does, it and he says he is not proud of,4th marriage? was it his fault? who knows/who cares?. one with smarts would not want all that in the press, hence the quiet life style, not even gary is pefect, love him any way, just thought i point that out, he is not hounded because apparently most were not interested in his personal life, like some. i wouldn’t mind if he won. or any one else.

  42. eloisa says:

Did you know that walken skit reading “Poker Face” was a copy of Jude Law as poetry reading it on Jimmy Fallon?

I prefer the original with Law though I admire C. Walken. I just thought that wasn’t so fair blatantly copy a sketch so good.

  43. ViktoryGin says:

This dude could have me spread-eagled on the sofa. Easily.

Don’t forget Drexel Spivey in True Romance.

  44. Bookworm says:

True Romance; Leon; the Fifth Element; Hannibal… Gary Oldman deserves an Oscar, I hope he wins

  45. Tara says:

In the 3rd pic down what do the red letters on the poster say? Looks like “DUPE”. Is that alternate name for the movie?
