Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams & Emma Stone: who was the best lady in red?

I wanted to group all of these dresses together for some reason last night. I don’t remember why. In my defense, I was half asleep because the Oscars were so damn dull. Anyway, this is a post devoted to the “red dresses” of the Oscars. Look, don’t even yell at me because you think Michelle Williams’ gown is “coral” or “dark pink.” It’s a pink-orange-red. It’s still a shade of red to me. Let’s just start with Michelle’s gown, okay? It’s Louis Vuitton, and I dislike it. I’m not a complete hater, though. I just didn’t think it was so special, and the peplum gave the impression of a little girl’s party dress. Which… Michelle was probably going for, since she loves to dress like a little girl. Michelle’s hair is her thing, and while I personally dislike it, I’ve grown to accept it. It’s fine. Whatever. Michelle doesn’t make my best-dressed or my worst-dressed. I just wish she would go back to her normal speaking voice and stop with the affected, lispy little-girl crap.

Here’s Natalie Portman in vintage Dior. I liked it at first glance, but now that I’m really examining it… the polka dots are not great. The shade of red isn’t the best. The fit is off, especially in the bust. The necklace doesn’t go with the gown. Her hair is meh and her makeup is gorgeous, al always. And her K-Fed is shorn.

Here’s Janet McTeer, nominee for Best Supporting Actress, in David Meister Signature. I think she looks really, really hot. Her body looks great, the dress is flattering, and she seems like she was just having fun.

Emma Stone in Giambattista Valli – although she claimed it’s “fuchsia” – which it isn’t. It looked too much like Nicole Kidman’s gown in 2007. Plus, I don’t like Emma in stuff that’s high-necked. It makes her look stocky, which she isn’t.

And here’s Livia Firth in custom-made Valentino. It’s too puffy, and the bust is weird. She’s so supremely gorgeous though, I kind of forgot to look at her dress.

Emma was BY FAR the best! She looked fantastic! Love that dress so much! Natalie looked nice, per usual, but boring. Hated Michelle’s dress. And I am really tired of Michelle’s little choker-style necklaces with strapless dresses. I just don’t like chokers in general or find them flattering.

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Agreed! Emma was the best, hands down.

My second fave thing about these pics was Natalie’s necklace. It is to die for.

    • Emily says:

Yep, Emma was one of my favourites too. I think Natalie’s dress would’ve worked as a knee-length cocktail dress- polka dots don’t really go with formal dress, IMO. I don’t know who Janet McTeer is but she looks great here. Don’t like Livia’s dress. Can’t her husband get Tom Ford to give her a pretty dress for the Oscars?

      • duchessofhazard says:

Portman’s dress would have worked if it were tea length – she’s too short for a floor length dress. It’s pretty, and the polka dots work for her because she’s petite (it looks young without being ‘girlish’).

  2. Ravensdaughter says:

Michelle Williams-lingerie dress? Was she working the Marilyn thing? NP-very tasteful. Emma Stone-darling! I saw her interviewed on the Red Carpet and doing her thing with Stiller (who is always a killjoy anyway), and I just adored her!
Livia Firth’s dress is recycled-don’t get how-but the bust looked like a rain-catcher. Is she small busted, because it kind of looked just-there. I liked the color and the fabric of the dress, but the bust is pretty critical to any dress and this one was awful.
I wonder how Matt Damon’s wife-Mamma Mia!-would have looked in it?
PS: Loved CF’s reference to he and Meryl working on “Mamma Mia”-but what’s not to love about Colin?

  3. LIVEALOT says:

Janet McTeer for the win! Though I love them both, is it just me or do Natalie and Michelle give off a smug vibe?

  4. Aiobhan says:

    Emma, Janet, and Michelle ftw.

The stupid jeweled bow on Michelle’s dress is too precious but I have to say she looks stunning.

I still think that Emma’s dress is too old for her but I still like it. It is definitely not fuschia, more cranberry for this photo but I think it works against her skin.

Colin Firth’s wife needs to put that dress back in the eighties closet that she found it in.

  5. Amanda says:

Janet McTeer looked good, and no one else did. Natalie’s fit was terrible, and so were the polka dots. And Michelle’s dress made me gag… the stupid little tutu with the bowtie-brooch… could it have possibly been any more childish?

  6. I.want.shoes says:

I love the color of Michelle’s dress. The dress itself sucks, but I am not surprised she chose it. And she stayed away from headbands so I can’t complain.

Only someone as statuesque and long-necked as Nicole Kidman could pull of the bow at the neck dress. It overwhelms Emma

  7. CookieJar says:

I instantly thought of Nicole Kidman´s Balenciaga gown when I saw Emma Stone, but it is pretty. But the make up artist still hates her. Seriously, that wall-to-wall pink eyeshadow looks so cheap.

  8. TruthTella says:

I HATE Natalie’s dress, it looks like it was made out of a picnik blanket… And is it just me or does she just not look the same since she got pregnant? Not that she’s gotten ugly it’s just that it seems (to me) like all the lustre has been sucked out of her, she looks so dull.

  9. normades says:

Michelle Williams was the best dressed last night imo. Her dress was an amazing piece of couture and it really suited her personality.

Emma Stone’s dress was great too. I usually hate asymmetric embellished shoulder stuff, but she really pulled it off (as usual).

Nathalie’s dress was a bit boring and looked budget in contrast to the very fancy jewelry, but her face looked amazing.

    • ds says:

Agree, love the dress Williams wore, looked unique. My no.1 for the evening. No2 Rose Byrne only because she wore horrible shoes. No3 – I don’t have a number 3 it was so boring.

  10. Ravensdaughter says:

In related news-you guys haven’t given us any updates on ballet K-Fed-get to it!

  11. Marianne says:

Emma Stone’s was my fave of the night. Loved the colour on her. Loved the fit. Loved the bow. It was dramatic but still classy and elegant. I also can’t belive how tall she is. She was towering over Ben. I’m sure that was partly the shoes though…

I always really liked Michelle’s. The dress fit her like a glove. The colour again was great on her. It was still feminine but also edgy. She didn’t go for a high collared neckline with long sleeves look. To me, this isn’t something you would see a little girl wearing. It was a nice mix.

Natalie looked fine. The thing I hated about her look was that it didn’t scream Oscars to me. I felt she was a tad underdressed.

Janet looked really nice. Very simple. Very elegant. Age appropriate.

I hated Colin Firth’s wife. The bust line is weird. And the shape of the dress made it look like she was trying to hide a baby bump.

    • Amanda says:

I disagree about Michelle’s dress, the faux-tutu and the bowtie brooch just SCREAM “little girl”. I wish she would quit trying to portray herself as a child.

      • Marianne says:

But it wasn’t all little girl. It had mix of both innocent little girl, and edgy woman. And say what you want but I just don’t see a little girl wearing that dress.

  12. Lenore says:

Love all these except for Livia (which it pains me to say, she’s so lovely).

Michelle Williams is starting to irritate me, and I don’t normally just dislike actresses for no reason – not the child-bride image she’s trying to project, I wouldn’t mind that if that’s her thin. But her facial expression is always so waxy, bulgy, smug, shiny, I can’t put my finger on it. She’s got a Rene Zellweger thing happening to her face, and I don’t think that’s a good road to go down unless you’re a puffer fish.

  13. brin says:

Janet McTeer looked great! Natalie’s dress was too casual for that necklace.

  14. TruthTella says:

P.S I think ysterday would have been Elizabeth Taylor’s 80th birthday, I wish there was someone like her these days with some crazy over the top glam dresses and dripping in giant jewels lol

  15. bros says:

HATE colin firths wife’s dress. what a monstrosity. horrible purse horrible chest horrible lace overlay!!!

  16. Asli says:

Emma is by far my favourite. The other – meh. Except what the fudge is Natalie wearing?!?! It was only one year ago she could do no wrong, now she looks so smug.

  17. GoodCapon says:

    I like Emma’s dress most.

Her presentation with Ben Stiller was quite funny but it went on far too long. Jonah Hill giving her the ‘no thanks’ was the high part.

  18. Jill says:

Portman’s is the best of the lot, although it looked better at a distance than it does in close-up. The rest are just meh.

  19. NM6804 says:

Stone was so funny, natural and cute on stage. I finally get her appeal!!!

    From all those dresses:

    1. Emma Stone
    2. McTeer

The rest are meh and blah.

  20. Jane says:

Yikes, I would hate to be a celebrity with my photos being taken, esp. at very HD. All my yucky pores would show through (even w/o the HD). lol Natalie’s face is so beautiful, so it makes up for her not-so-great dress. The diamond necklace works well too. When you’re dressed up, it’s not all about the dress. Hair, makeup, accessories, shoes (if we see it), everything.

Janet McTeer looks great for her age and I don’t even know how old she is; she just looks like she looks good for her age.

I don’t like the bow tie around Emma’s neck, probably because I wouldn’t wear it myself in fear that it will choke me throughout the night. I think the dress is a little too grown up for her as well.

Did not like Michelle’s dress. I find it funny how these cohosts are so “nice” to the celebs on TV, but behind their back and back on the celebrity best dressed bashing show, the hosts finally say what they really felt.

  21. Schnauzers!!! says:

I thought Natalie P. was beautiful. I really like the dress/necklace combo. All around great look for her. The rest…meh…

  22. cherryberry says:

I like Natalie Portman’s dress but not how she styled it. It’s very fun and playful but her hair and jewelry are not. Maybe a high ponytail or big bun would’ve been better. And most anything would have to be better than that necklace.

  23. Beatrix says:

Natalie Portman’s outfit has to be one of the WORST things I have ever seen on a red carpet. Not only is the dress ugly (flea market, anyone?) in itself, but inadequate. It simply does not fit her all. She looks cheap. She also looks bored, as always.

Her hair is terrible, the jewels are way too much for that tacky dress and don’t match it at all. And the nails? good lord, she looks like a cheap bridesmaid at a gipsy wedding. AWFUL, AWFUL, AWFUL.

I guess when you are Natalie Portman everybody will kiss your overrated, arrogant ass and say that you look great no matter what you wear, but this girl is in denial or something.

That woman has no taste at all, I swear to God.

  24. Luda says:

Janet McTeer for the win, hands down.

  25. jamminatorr says:

I think Emma Stone and Natalie were ok. Not great but not spectacularly bad. Livia was a big, big disappointment. And I HATED Michelle Williams dress – too much.

  26. Anom! says:

    NATALIE PORTMAN = EPIC FAIL.

  27. TheOriginalVictoria says:

I have to change my opinion. I thought Natalie’s dress was great on TV, but up close, I can see that it’s not all of that.

Emma is my second favorite of the night. I think she looked sophisticated elegant. She and Pene had the best look.

  28. Charz says:

god, natalie is stunning. such a natural beauty. i don’t think her dress is anything special but everything else is perfect. glad she’s not skeletal anymore like she was in black swan.

  29. Alexis says:

As usual on the red carpet, there is something weird about Emma Stone’s makeup.

The polka dots on Portman are horrifying. The fit of the dress and her makeup is on point, but I’m not going to forgive her for the polka dots.

On balance, I think Janet McTeer looked best.

    • Amanda says:

If you look at Natalie’s dress from the side you can see how far the bust juts out. I cringed when I saw it on TV. The fit is really bad.

  30. WOM says:

The worst part of Michelle’s dress (which I really don’t like) was the back half of the bodice. It was a different fabric. AND it was beige. WHY?! Here’s a photo.

Livia Firth stole that dress from my aunt’s bridesmaids, circa 1976. GIVE IT BACK, LIVIA!

  31. serena says:

Natalie was the best of those red ladies, to be honest.
I especially hate Michelle’s and Emma’s (why does she always do this to her beautiful face -horrible make up-hair- and body -awful dress)? sigh

  32. Madrid says:

Natalie made a fashion statement, she chose a gown designed by C.Dior (the original)after all the J.Galliano fuss last year.
E.Stone could be unique and stunning but something is not working with that dress…too matchy? (I missed Charlize Theron, she really could have pulled off that red bow)

  33. Me says:

    I think Portman 100%

  34. Happy21 says:

I didn’t hate anything I saw last night.

I was surprised that Michelle Williams wasn’t a total snorefest with what she chose so have to give her credit for that. I kind of liked her dress. Not love but like.

I thought Natalie Portman looked simple and well put together. The dress she chose was nothing special but I think she looked very pretty.

Emma Stone looked pretty good too. Didn’t love the huge bow but she did pull it off.

The McTeer woman looked great but she has huge boobs and when she was sitting down it really looked like she could have used a better over the shoulder boulder holder.

Colin Firth’s wife is beautiful (and she better be since he’s such a handsome man!) but her dress was so very boring. I think its probably the worst one so far.

  35. Stubbylove says:

Michelle’s dress and look were meh, Portman phoned it in (with the exception of the amazing necklace she’s wearing), Emma’s look freaked me out at first b’cuz it looked too much like Kidman’s but it grew on me when she presented, God-bless Livia Firth but that’s just a terrible, terrible choice. Winner in red dress: Emma Stone.

  36. original kate says:

emma was my fave of the night – loved it. janet looked lovely and age-appropriate. michelle looked sweet, but predictable. natalie was meh. hate livia’s dress.

  37. Kim says:

Emma looked the best. I dont like Natalies dress and Michelle needs to lose the rhinestone bow at waist.

  38. michele lawson says:

Emma looked good. Her part with Ben Stiller was funny. She was one of the few younger stars that got to present. Lucky. Natalie’s dress looked good on TV. I didn’t know her dress had black polka-dots on it. It doesn’t look that great now up close. Looks very strange with that diamond jewlery. She should have gotten a red velvet dress to go with that jewlery, like what Angelina Jolie wore.

  39. amanda keynes says:

The red dresses were not that great this year.

  40. Camille (The original) says:

    Janet looks amazing.

I quite liked Emma’s dress, but is that pink eye shadow? Not good.

Michelle looks…ok. I don’t hate the dress but I don’t love it either.

Natalie looks pretty but boring. I don’t care for her hair and I don’t think polka dots belong at the Oscars.

  41. Elizabeth says:

Janet McTeer has a real va-va-vavoom thing going on. I love it. Hate whatever the hell Emma Stone has on her neck. Big bow = bad idea. Love Mrs. Colin Firth – beautiful makeuup and hair. Simply elegant.

  42. Amanda says:

I liked Natalie’s dress the best. So classy.

  43. Vera says:

Michelle’s and Emma’s were the best two for me.

Michelle’s was interesting, though I don’t think the best dress of the night by far. Really, the thing that bothered me the most, was the pink clutch. And for all the shots they had of her sitting, I think the dress was good in that she probably knew that because she was one of the nominees, she’d be getting pans from time to time, so from waist-up it is pretty great to me.

Emma’s, although after the stocky comment I can’t see it as doing anything but making her look shorter up top than she is, I still really like. It looked really great on the red carpet and on the stage. And I thought she was really funny (not hilarious, but still funny) for her presenter spot.
