Catherine Zeta-Jones and Julianne Hough were both bold on the red carpet for the Rock of Ages Los Angeles premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Let me start out by saying (as a 37-year-old woman) that I highly sympathize with Catherine for having to pose alongside an early-20s, hot young thing. Despite the age difference, I am leaning towards claiming a (slight) win for Catherine here. Let us consider the differences.
Julianne’s dress was a chartreuse Kaufmanfranco silk crepe gown that was cut on the bias. The color was an unconventional choice and appropriate for her first (real) big outing (Footloose doesn’t count). From the front, the dress looks pretty amazing, but something bizarre occurs when Julianne turns around for the requisite “behind” pose. The nude panelling seems to gather up and create the illusion of back fat, which Julianne simply does not possess. Also, are those pre-shadowed butt cheeks installed in the dress? Admittedly, the possibility fascinates me, and I’m wondering if this is a “Ryan Seacrest, tie this butt down with a ring” sort of strategy. Despite the cute butt (and all that it entails), the back view is kind of a disaster for a prospective leading lady.
Julianne’s fresh makeup and hair was fairly appropirate and balanced out some of the mess of the dress. I love the unexpected, lopsided topknot.
In contrast, Catherine’s dress was a Zuhair Murad design and would probably be considered a cocktail dress, but the one-sleeve design (by its own volition) would ideally translate into a design that is bold without being too revealing. However, the black lace with nude underpanelling sort of screams, “Hey, look at me, boys!” Overall, Catherine has the chutzpah to pull this look off without looking too try-hard. But just barely.
The closeup view of Catherine’s makeup is a bit iffy but only because she seems to look “different” these days but in an undefinable way.
Malin Ackerman, on the other hand, was far too showoffy in her black Reem Acra gown with very significant cutouts on the left side. This is far too much skin to be showing off when one isn’t playing a leading lady role, but I think Malin’s general look is rather blah and forgettable, so perhaps she took a worthy risk here. Thoughts?
Fergie and Josh Duhamel were weirder than usual together. I guess he dressed for the occasion, but she just looks like a trashy rock groupie, which is also admittedly appropriate here.
Ashley Tisdale wore a short little cocktail dress to the event that will do nothing to shake her Disney-bred image. Perhaps she should try for a bit of glamour during her next movie premiere outing.
Mary J. Blige wore a shiny black trash bag on the red carpet, but at least it was a fitted, asymmetrically-cut trash bag and not a baggy Angelina Jolie-styled trash bag.
Debbie Gibson and her rockin’ bod wore a pretty cute red dress. She looks great, but I don’t ever think she’ll have a musical comeback.

All of these actresses have nice bodies but the dresses they wear look so cheap. I can go to the local mall and buy something that looks classier and more put together for less than $100. I realize this is Rock of Ages and no one is expected to wear a ball gown, but I have seen casual dresses that look better than any of the ones shown here. Malin Ackerman is kind of a forgettable actress who wears forgettable dresses, but compared to the rest of her co-stars, I think she was one of the best dressed along with Catherine Zeta Jones.
But wasn’t that the point of this premiere? The men looking like 80’s-has-been-rockstars, the women like trashy groupies? I think they all meant to look cheap.

I beg to differ on the legs. She has terrible, chicken thin legs and saggy knee caps. And no, the caps aren’t “age” I am a year younger than she and mine are toned and firm.
I think her legs look good, too. I don’t understand why people are saying that her kneecaps are saggy. They look fine to me.
@anna no it’s no age. I am her age and even after gaining weight my legs and especially knees are more toned that that. I also have similar coloring but my legs are not greyish.
And a lot of actresses our age and more importantly – older may have F’d up faces but they still have nice legs.

I think just the opposite. Catherine’s dress looks stunning on her, with those 6 feet of gorgeous, shapely legs. You can tell she lost some weight and is back to her old fighting form.

Okay, not a fan of cut-outs or that sheer mesh crap in general, so I’m not loving most of these dresses. The mesh ALWAYS reminds me of an ice skater outfit… and the cut-outs almost always look skanky to me.
Catherine’s face is bugging me more than her dress, WTH happened? These celebs are taking the cosmetic ‘enhancements’ way too far… they really think this is better than a bit of graceful aging?? The dress might have been improved somewhat if she had left that one sleeve home and let both arms go sleeveless.
Julianne is gorgeous, and I don’t think she could look ‘really bad’ if she tried. That said, I’m mixed on this look. Usually I HATE that chartreuse color, but I think she pulls it off nicely… a fresh pop of color that looks beautiful on her. The dress itself… hmmm. Front is pretty… back is actually, kind of pretty as well. That odd side/back angle though… not pretty! Both the nasty mesh and odd butt-shading-or-whatever-it-is are just… bad.
Make-up is gorgeous (usually is).

Malin looks beautiful in her ‘head shot’ photo…. kind of ‘old hollywood’ glam, which seems odd for this particular premiere. Not to worry, pan down to the rest of her ‘look’ and she skanks it up with the tacky cut-outs and crotch-high leg slit. Kind of a mixed up look that in the end, doesn’t work for me.
Ashley looks awful… and for me, is the worst of the bunch by far! Not sure what I hate more… the hideous black mesh, tacky, short glitter dress, fugly shooties, bubble-gum pink lips, or the dark roots screaming for touch up. Ick.
Someone else commented that she showed up with Zac Efron and that he looked like he had just rolled out of bed. I saw those pics too, and have to say that Zac was the BEST part of her look by far! MJB is… meh. Definitely seen her in worse, and as pointed out, the dress fits her nicely. Hate the mesh, and the shoes appear to be some kind of geriatric-comfort version of sexy strappy sandals… not sexy at all.

Debbie Gibson looks HOT… and I think was the best-dressed of the bunch! I can overlook the toe infraction because she looks so great. Come on… we all have that pair of shoes that we love, but find that once our feet get a bit ‘moist’ they tend to slide down a bit, pushing the toes out of the shoe! Usually a pair of foot petals is a good fix. Maybe she was working the red carpet so hard that her feet slid right over her petals!

CZJ whole expression is different because of the tweaking. I saw her recently in one of my favorite Cohen Bro movies, Intolerable Cruetly, and her and Clooney were so hot together. She was so beautiful, so I’m kinda sad that her face is looking different.

Catherine looks like herself to me. Her eyes are smaller because of her age. She has smile lines visible, so no excessive filler. She always had a full face. Now it is just a little less full due to the aging process. She just looks like a forty something year old version of her younger self.

Whenever I see Julianne, I see desperation in her face – she only has a couple years left to get her name to a “actress” title and she doesnt seem to making much of an inroad. She knows that the clock is ticking and as lazy as Hollywood can be, they’re not always going to call her for every part for a bubbly blonde girl who sings/dances
Did CZJ and Julianne trade dresses before they walked the carpet because that’s what it looks like to me. CZJ is too old for that dress. She looks like mutton dressed as lamb. That dress would have looked better on Julianne.

Catherine is gorgeous. She’s just older than she was when she hit the scene in “Zorro” in the 1990’s. She has really been through hell with Michael’s cancer and her bipolar disease. In the last couple of months, she was at The Cirque Lodge in Utah for her disease. She’s a great actress, mother and wife who looks damn good. Go Catherine!
