Jennifer Lopez might return to Idol, depending on if the money is right: good strategy?

Earlier this week we heard that American Idol producers were looking for an entirely fresh new judging panel, with potential names being floated like Miley Cyrus, Adam Lambert and Katy Perry. It was assumed that Jennifer Lopez was out of consideration, either because she thought she was too big for the show (and her boytoy played hardball in negotiations) or because ratings were down and she was being asked to leave. In mid May, producer Nigel Lythgoe told TMZ that they did want Lopez back on the show. He also said that J.Lo was weighing her options, and seemed to suggest that the door was open to her. He added “It’s a business. She has to weigh everything. I know she’s gotten lots of offers to do movies and other things.” Well according to TMZ’s latest report, Lopez is still considering going back to her plush job on Idol. It’s all about whether she needs the job and her fat paycheck, and she’s going to play the waiting game with them. Read: she’s holding out for more cash. Here’s more:

Jennifer Lopez is telling friends … she HAS NOT made up her mind on her future with “American Idol” … and WILL NOT make a decision until after she finishes her current concert tour with Enrique Iglesias.

There are reports Jennifer has already informed producers she’s a no-go to return to the judge’s table next season … but sources close to J.Lo tell us the reports are absolutely not true.

We’re told Jennifer wants to “see where things are in her life” when the concert ends.

Translation: If Jen’s popularity is UP after the tour and she has more options, she’s more likely to bounce off the show. If she’s not … “Idol” ain’t a bad fallback gig.

It wouldn’t be the first time J.Lo waited ’til the last minute — last year, she held out until late August and finally gave in when producers agreed to fork over $20 mil for a 1-year deal.

The question is – if Lopez wants to come back will it be too late or not? They’re already talking about a whole new panel, and Lithgow has been joking about suggestions for stunt casting (including Charlie Sheen, but he’s surely not serious). Is Lopez going to be able to hold out for more money and is she worth it? TMZ claimed last month that she wants more than the $15 million that Britney is making for X Factor. It sounds outrageous to me.

Lopez is touring all over the US with Enrique Iglesias this summer and will move on to tour Europe for her Dance Again tour in the Fall. It’s hard to see where she’ll have the time to devote to Idol anyway.

Meanwhile Lopez keeps expanding her brand. She’s involved in a business venture with a website selling luxury t-shirts and she’s executive producing a one hour TV pilot for ABC family about a Latina lesbian couple with children.

These are photos you’re already seen of Lopez performing in Brazil on 6-27-12 and also on the beach with Casper and her kids on 6-25-12. Credit: PacificCoastNews

She will never leave AI unless they will fired her or cancel the show. She is still relevant only because AI. She can play and pretend that she has some power but in reality she doesn’t.

    • Tiffany says:

I agree so much. All of those other things she wants to do only have a chance of being successful because she can promote them in front of Idol’s large audience.

  2. Eleonor says:

I told you so!!!! She did the same last year.

  3. Lauren says:

She would be crazy to leave Idol right now. The only reason she’s been given these new career opportunities is because she is on Idol. I do think that she thinks she’s a big deal and should be making more money than Britney but she isn’t. She looks ridiculous in that suit though. I laugh every time I see it.

    • floretta50 says:

She is jealous of Britney Spears, whose contract is much bigger. Jlo’s career was in the dumps until American Idol, Most Beautiful and every thing else came after she got the Idol gig.

  4. brin says:

    Hope they replace her.

  5. Jackie O says:

she is clearly holding out for more dough.

  6. chromehearts says:

She would fade into oblivion without AI. . . Bitch needs to get over herself!

  7. cupidityrox! says:

Are she & Casper the inspiration behind the tv show pilot?

  8. marie says:

Wasn’t this always the plan? Hope she knows though that if she leaves Idol no one will listen to her crap music without being forced so her singing career will be back in the crapper and she’ll be begging them to take her back..

  9. NeNe says:

She pulled the same BS last time. I say, “BEAT IT”. I personally didn’t feel that she added anything to the show, and the show would go on just fine with her, and her inflated ego.

  10. Lee says:

She’d be a fool to leave, and I can’t imagine she doesn’t know it. She puts out her auto-tuned dance tracks, and “premieres” them on Idol. Free, free, free promotion, AND she gets paid for the gig. No brainer. She’s just playing it out for more cash.

  11. tru tru says:

The spot should only be for a year and they should change judges every year to keep it interesting.

not debate whether this diva gets to come back, she didn’t add anything to me.

that dropping it low pic, looks horrid.

  12. Blue says:

But wait, if they have her 20 mil last year, isn’t she making more than Britney? She isn’t worth that type of money at all. If they are going to give her any money they should lock her in to a longer contract. That kind of money for what, 4-6 months worth of “work” Bitch Please!!

  13. Jen says:

Wow – holding out for more $$ – I’m shocked.

  14. Skipper says:

It must be so burdensome to have an ego that size. It requires a lot of effort to maintain. Like a really pretty garden or a really bad crack habit.

  15. alison8701 says:

She’s a terrible judge though. If you can get someone less famous for cheaper go for it. She brings nothing new. And she’s not even like… a draw. She’s not Britney Spears. She’s just kind of… there. Not worth the money.

  16. hunter says:

JLo could never make that expression in the top photo if she were getting Botox.

Therefor the photo shocks me. Huh. I would have pegged her a Botox’er for sure but if so those lines between her brows would absolutely not be there.

  17. Jover says:

Agree with all the comments glad i checked out of AI years ago; how can anyone keep a straight face when one of the judge’s is a narcissist stuck in her IN Living Color days and continually putting out generic auto-tuned drivel with monumental singing talents like Pitbull. THe flip side of JHO is that because she is an all-consuming greedhead, she and her “music”, and that little tike that pals around with her, are just boring.

  18. Ed Varilo says:

Jlo has no say if she going to come back to Idol season 12, that was already decided by News Corp back earylier this year, stating at the New Corp investor meeting that Jlo and Steve failed their job, for not bringing up the TV ratings for season 11, and that News Corp has lost of estimate 171 millions in commercial endorsements due to poor TV rating, News Corp has also decided they need “New Fresh Energy” for seasons 12, that means replacing all the current judges on Idol, so Jlo your fired, just like from Sony Records back 2010,…

  19. the original bellaluna says:

Bullshit. She’s doing her same “Gimme More Money” dance she did last season. Cut her considerable ass off and wish her well.

  20. Kosmos says:

I really hope to see much less of her. She’s not very talented and I’m just sick of seeing her parade herself as a hot item…It seems some people fall for it, but I’ve never thought of her as a real celebrity in her own right, just a media hound who won’t go away…please, let’s hope she’s not on AI anymore or on anything else.
