Katie Holmes on her divorce: “There are a lot of people with much bigger problems”

Katie Holmes Tom Cruise

Now that Katie Holmes has sorted out her personal life (and rid herself of a certain unhinged, lift-wearing midget), she’s getting her professional life back together as well. She’s just signed on as the face of Bobbi Brown cosmetics (with a reported $2-3 million contract). She’ll be back on Broadway in November too, and next Wednesday, Holmes & Yang will stage its first New York Fashion Week presentation with a huge show in the tents outside Lincoln Center. Of course, I still have my doubts on whether that collection will be any better than the Holmes & Yang looks that are illustrated in this post, but we’ll see what happens.

Before we get to some new stuff on the Tom Cruise wife-audition scandal, here’s some excerpts from a new WWD interview with Katie herself. She sounds very confident and optimistic about the future, but in a mostly realistic way:

Katie Holmes

On the press frenzy over her divorce: “I have a lot of feelings about the press,” she said with a smile. “There are a lot of people with much bigger problems and who are less fortunate. I try to keep it all in perspective.”

On the Holmes & Yang aesthetic: “Very simple, with very classic lines. We use a lot of silks and leathers and suedes. This year, we’re excited because we’ve incorporated a lot of new trims. It’s basically pieces that have evolved from basics, but not too far. They’re just nice, well-made luxury items that highlight the woman wearing them.” Price points start from about $700 and range to $3,000, she said. “We have a lot of casual, and gowns, some unique jackets.” Details include shirts lined in silk — “the silky part of the shirt is on your body all day. We try to make beautiful things, and we’re not so trend-driven. We try to do a touch of rock ‘n’ roll with our stuff, but keep it very classic.”

On stage acting: “It’s a medium I really enjoy.” She’s not bothered by having to perform every night. “I’m a schedule person. I like to have a routine. You’re also very in touch with your audience — they’re very much a part of the show, which is obviously something you don’t have in film. You get to know people in a different way. The matinee audience is obviously very different from the Saturday night audience. You learn about material — you really start to understand what works and what doesn’t. I think both film and stage are so challenging, but in different ways. With film, yeah, you have another take, but a lot of the time you’re losing the light, so you better nail it on that take. I haven’t found any part of acting to be easy.”

On her Bobbi Brown gig: “I think it’s amazing that Bobbi found a hole in the marketplace and said, ‘I’m going to do something about it. I’m going to create a line for real women who want to look pretty and have it be easy. This is my first foray into beauty products and the evolution of a look. You want the hair and makeup to support the woman, just like you want the clothes to support the woman. You don’t want to lose the woman. That’s how Jeanne and I design.”

She & Suri do crafts: Holmes credits her Midwestern upbringing and crafts with her daughter for helping to keep her feet on the ground. “I spray-paint shoe racks, because, why not?” But she says with a laugh that said projects aren’t always successful: “I think, ‘Oh, I’m a great mom’ — and then it doesn’t really pan out the way I think it’s going to. But the intention’s there. My sister teaches art, and she gives me a lot of ideas.”

She keeps moving: Holmes noted that she enjoys trying something new every day, without “being afraid to fail. Who cares? At least you tried. It’s usually the people who haven’t tried who are the naysayers.”

[From WWD]

I love that Katie is sounding increasingly less robotic with each progressive interview. Actually, this is the first real interview that she’s done after her Tom split, right? But she was starting to sound quite independent in those few interviews that filtered out immediately following the split even though they were conducted pre-divorce.

Now let’s get to a new detail on that Vanity Fair October cover story that has so far given mainstream credence to the story (which has also been confirmed by director Paul Haggis) that details and solidifies the Tom Cruise wife-audition process conducted by CO$ (and more about Nicole Kidman’s estrangement from her kids). The article also discusses how Tom ended his two-year relationship with Penelope Cruz over (surprise!) Scientology as well. Apparently, Penelope refused to completely give up her Buddhist ways, so David Miscavige “branded her a ‘dilettante’.” You know they probably originally told her that she could be a Buddhist and a Scientologist at the same time, just like they told Katie should could still be Catholic at the beginning of her relationship as well.

This next part is pretty funny. Business Insider has gotten ahold of a nasty letter from David Miscavige’s lawyer, Jeffrey Riffer, to Vanity Fair, which threatens the magazine with litigation (“The sting of the jury verdict will last longer still; far longer than any pleasure from racing to publish a poorly researched and sourced story“) and also stresses that “Miscavige and Tom Cruise are far too busy to have as close of a relationship as Vanity Fair alleges.” Riiight.

Meanwhile, this week’s tabloids all have their own takes on Katie’s reaction to the wife auditions. Star says that Katie is both “shocked and mortified” because “she had an idea that this is what went on, but not to this extent.” In Touch adds that Katie is “stressed out” over the article and basically feels like a fool for falling for Tom’s act, and Enquirer says that it’s finally settling into Katie’s mind that her marriage to Tom was also “arranged by Scientology” and that she was “also targeted to play the role of his wife.” Even worse, Katie reportedly feels that while her childhood dream of marrying Tom “came true, but it’s turned into a nightmare of the worst kind — and she still can’t escape it.” Yeah, it’s gotta suck for Katie to read that stuff in Vanity Fair. Most of us have seen the article as a good thing, and it certainly makes us empathize with what a horrifically controlling life Katie lived for years, but it’s also got to be difficult for Katie to feel like she’s re-living the nightmare after she finally escaped.

I applaud her for taking a stand in her life and I feel for her for as well. Learning your marriage was a setup planned by a cult has to be hard. But in the long run it sounds like she’s going to continue to grow from it. Good for her :).

    • Liv says:

She handled her divorce really smart. First she totally caught him off guard, then she used the media (attention) and paparazzi to stay safe and now she slowly backed down a bit. I can’t imagine another way for her, he would have destroyed her.

      • Lauren says:

Thank Goodness Katie has an intelligent & supportive family. Tom & his cult would have tried to destroy her. Still suspicious of this whole charade(contract marriage)but it is over, and Suri hopefully will not be trapped in a cult lifestyle.

  2. lin234 says:

I don’t believe she went into her marriage completely naive about Tom and Scientology. I do think she was swept off her feet until she got pregnant and then made a deal with the devil.

I read this super long article a while back about how she courts the media everyday. Her latest apartment has underground parking and side entrances but residents have noted she always uses the front entrance where the paparazzi are. There are plenty of celebrities who live in NY and don’t whore out their kids to the media everyday. She needs to stop using Suri in her media game.

Anyways, she has ZERO sense of style. I wouldn’t be surprised if she planned her divorce around the same time her fashion line is taking it’s first catwalk. Without the association she had with Tom, no one would be interested in her so-called fashion line.

I guess I’m getting sick of hearing how innocent and naive Katie is in her mess with Tom. She’s already proved how smart and savvy she is with her divorce.

    • Layale says:

Maybe she’s courting the media, or maybe she doesn’t get caught in dark tunnels and underground parking to be safe. I’ve heard CO$ can be pretty crazy. I prefer to believe she goes out in front of cameras to protect her daughter rather than exploit her.

    • gg says:

okay, she’s a bad horrible person. so what if she was.

The co$ is still going DOWN and it’s because of her, so it was all worth it.

  3. gee says:

I like her, but enough with the toes pointed in thing already!

    • Cat says:

OMG! Thank you!!! It’s not endearing, it’s dreadful. Ugh!!!

      • gg says:

People who are pigeon-toed do not do it to be endearing; they can’t help it unless they make a concerted effort to turn their toes out.

    • KellyinSeattle says:

If she’s in the spotlight, she’s going to have to learn to stand up correctly without going all pigeoned-toed. The second dress makes her look like she has hippo hips. Some people, no matter how much money, don’t know how to dress. BUT, I like her for her. She and Jennifer Garner seem like they’d be good friends.

  4. Rinny says:

She looks gorgeous in these photos!

  5. Naye in VA says:

Ahahaa, I laughed loud enough for my co-workers to look, at the Miscavige statement about the men being too busy to be close. What a lame position to take, that’s the least juicy part of this whole situation.

  6. CC says:

Let them sue (like I read somewhere, not sure who), I think it would be very interesting, can you imagine all the testimonies VF would bring out in their defense? I’m sure they were careful about the article. Well as long as it’s not closed door. If they’re so righteous about it, show the world, not bar access to what is said or shown in the court.

    • TrustMeOnThis says:

There will not be a lawsuit. Can you imagine what would come out in pretrial discovery? That’s how we know the Xenu story – $ci sued someone so it was entered into testimony and became part of the public record. People posted it on the ‘net (mostly attempting to show it was ridic) and $ci went after them, trying to get it removed everywhere. The group Anonymous was formed to support people who wanted the information to be available. $cientology created Anonymous. True story.

And that’s not even getting into the fact that truth is a defense to libel. So yeah, there will not be any lawsuit.

      • Lisa Marconi says:

It was a trademark violation case that produced the insane details of Xenu and the volcano complete with childish drawings of Xenu. I sh!t you not.

Interesting fact about Anonymous playing a role in exposing Scientology.

      • Anne de Vries says:

Yeah.. that’s not quite how Anonymous started

The OT3 lawsuits happened in the 90s and dragged on into the early 00s
Anonymous organically arose (it wasn’t started) in 2008

  7. serena says:

I like the black and blue dresses.

Anyway I’m glad real-Katie is back! I mean, this was the first ‘natural’ interview I read of her in ages.

  8. Phil says:

You know when she says ‘there are more important things’ she’s talking to tabloids like this dumb one who won’t shut up about the divorce. Seriously, I am so tired of hearing about it and Tom cruise. and don’t start all the ‘if you don’t like it don’t read it’ comments. I know that. I’m just saying I think it’s funny celebitchy is all proud of Katie and her next step in life, when Katie is telling this site and others like it to stfu.

    • Sunnyinseattle says:

@Phil, they asked one question. Chill, the whole interview was with Vanity Affair which is hardely tabloids and it wasn’t all about the divorce. 😀

    • Raven says:

The interview was with Women’s Wear Daily. And if you are tired of hearing about her, listen to something else. Or you can just skip this story. I skipped several today.

  9. Julie says:

I read the letter from the DM lawyer. I don’t have alot of experience with lawyers but the letter reads like an overblown hissy fit. VF knows CO$ standard policy of lawsuits. I’m sure they are ready. I noticed on the BBC website yesterday that they took the time to mention that M. Orth had interviewed Margaret Thatcher and Vladimir Putin. Maybe putting out there that she isn’t a light weight?

    • gg says:

Okay, I’ve been busy all day and finally had time to read this letter. I’ve been a paralegal for over 30 years.

This letter that Miss Cabbage OBVIOUSLY WROTE HIMSELF? ROTFL, omg, I had to shut my door I’m laughing so hard.

No lawyer wrote that emotional tripe, Miss Cabbage wrote it. Cease and desist letters never, EVER contain emotion, partly because it has nothing to do with the writer; it’s up to the attorney to be absolutely certain emotion has no place in their missives. So they school it all out of you so you can effectively lay down the law. The LAW, not the pissy hurt feewings of immature idiots caught with their entire bodies in the cookie jar.

Go ahead and file suit, co$. You’ll be laughed out of court on the day.

In short, this is the funniest letter I have EVER READ, hands down! 😆

As said above, cult of greed and lies, you definitely protest too much, and brag about nonevents in an effort to flesh out your LIES! Nobody believes all that crap about how many people belong to your sick org. It’s all bullsh!t and we all know it. Gotta wonder how much they paid this lawyer to sign the letter. Hope it’s alot, pallie, because now you look like a completely unprofessional hack. Holy cow, that made my day. I’m going to show this to my boss and he will get an almighty kick out of it too.

      • Izzy says:

gg, am I crazy like Xenu, or did that diatribe/ letter actually confirm that Co$ has spies all over, including in mainstream media? Not to go all Oliver Stone, but the letter alleges that VF hid the article’s existence from its LA office until the last possible moment, AND it states, repeatedly, that a current employee of Miss Cabbage is also currently employed by VF. One thing for a $cilon to be working there, but one who also works for Cabbage? That’s a plant for sure. Right?!

      • gg says:

        They’re stupid to admit that.
And interesting to know VF had to do it covertly, just like Katie had to. Everybody knows you have to be sneaky with all the spies around.

Jeeze what rank amateurs – still, I’m glad they’re so shoddy at defense. It’ll make em easier to tear down when the feds swoop in and bust Cabbage for graft.

  10. carol says:

she is an absolute Wonderful Human Being. No one is perfect – but she truly is MY HERO.

  11. garvels says:

Liked her realistic perspective that there are people with much bigger problems than her divorce with the millionaire mental midget.

I thought she handled her divorce quite well, and it sounds like she is starting to enjoy her independence…good for her!

  12. mln76 says:

I doubt there will be any suit just like there was no suit after the New Yorker article (written by a Pulitzer Prize winner) that was really damaging last year. Tom Cruise couldn’t sue for slander when it was alleged that he used slave labor nor will he sue now that it’s alleged that he had a detailed auditioning process for his wife. Both are based on fact and with the caliber of the writers behind these stories the denials are pathetic.

  13. Lem says:

Just so glad she’s using words again.
Her ‘cruise era’ interviews were so… Amazing

  14. lucy2 says:

I’d imagine she doesn’t mind the paparazzi attention too much, given how scary CO$ is, it’s like a free security patrol.

She does sound a lot more focused and less robotic.

    • gg says:

She has every reason to be scared as hell of these freak$. They’ll do anything to shut people up. It’s not working but they still haven’t learned to quit the overboard self-imploding denials.

  15. kibbles says:

I’ve always thought she was a smart and quiet type. I think she was enamored with Tom because of his stardom and I also think that she believed in the beginning that he would also be great for her career. When they first got married, I had read about her cunning attorney father making sure that Kate would be well provided for in the case of a divorce. I knew then that her parents would be a great asset to her in the event she wanted to divorce Tom. Just from what she was able to pull off makes me think that Kate wasn’t really a robot during the marriage, just stifled and depressed because she was constantly being controlled and followed by Tom’s people. I actually like the purple dress she is wearing if it had been tailored better. The top needs to be pulled up to accentuate her bosom and she needs a belt to give her a waistline. I really like the colors though.

  16. emmieapricot says:

I think Katie is a wonderful mother. And I think she’s gorgeous… But, as for her and fashion, I just don’t get it. I see her as a walking advertisement for her clothing line and IMO, she never looks all that. Granted, she’s usually in mommy-mode and her first concern probably isn’t fashion, but that’s what we see so maybe she should make an effort? And it’s funny to think that a lot of the things she wears possibly cost from $700 – $3,000 and yet they look as good as my old navy extra 50% off clearance finds?!?

    • gg says:

I will never, never, ever be able to understand how these wacky designers can justify charging so much $$$$$$$ for their dodgy clothes.

    • deehunny says:

well, the whole thing is that she has a fashion line. so you do have to look good to build your brand. she like never does. the navy top pic is the best she’s ever looked. and she’s pretty. and she has a stylist. it’s crazyness

  17. babythastarsshinebrite says:

Katie can also credit her mid-western upbringing for being strong and true to herself. I grew up in Ohio and no matter what try to be I ultimately do me.

  18. carol says:

my goodness – some outfits can be so incredibly Unflattering. my goodness. She looks 50 lbs. fatter in that disgusting uglee skirt. My god

    • Relli says:

Judging by these photos and the ones we recently saw of her in Carolina Herrera I think she needs to mind her hemlines more. The photo of her at top in a skirt above the knees cuts her right and its a straighter more tailored skirt. Anything that cuts her just below her knees make her look unusually large at top and cuts her calves right at their thickest part which, is incredibly unflattering.

  19. Itsa says:

I like Katie! I think she’s beautiful, smart and I love how gracefully she has handled this mess.
I don’t care for her fashion design though. The fuschia and black dress is awful. It makes her look very short waisted and her hips look wide. Imagine how a normal person would look in that!

  20. ojulia123 says:

I believe her when she says that there are others with bigger problems. Her biggest problem is…what? 5’6 without his special shoes?
