Sara Gilbert is engaged to Linda Perry after the ‘most amazing proposal ever’

Sara Gilbert

I’ve never watched a single episode of “The Talk,” but I do have fond memories of Sara Gilbert as the smartass daughter on “Rosanne” as well as in that so-awful-it-was-compelling Drew Barrymore movie, Poison Ivy (which somehow spawned several direct-to-dvd sequels). In her personal life, Sara has been officially out as lesbian since 2010 although she and former partner Allison Adler were together since 2001 and split in August 2011. Shortly thereafter, Sara started dating Linda Perry, who is the former lead singer of 4 Non Blondes (and now I’ll have their signature song, “What’s Up” in my head for the rest of the day) and currently works as a songwriter. Now Linda has proposed to Sara, and they’re engaged!

What’s goin’ on with Sara Gilbert and songwriter girlfriend Linda Perry? They’re getting married! Actress and TV personality Gilbert, 38, announced their engagement on the Monday, April 8 episode of “The Talk” — explaining that the former 4 Non Blondes frontwoman, 47, recently popped the question with an elaborate, musical proposal in an L.A. park.

Perry (who has written hit songs for the likes of Pink, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani and many others) arranged for a guitarist, brass band and other musicians to play their song, The Cure’s “Love Song.” The Grammy winner then donned a series of five different t-shirts reading “Will You Marry Me?” word by word.

On hand for the elaborate romantic gesture: their moms and several friends.

“I think that’s it and it’s like the most amazing proposal ever . . . ” Gilbert told her fellow “Talk” co-hosts, but Perry had one more trick up her sleeve: 80s rocker John Waite, crooning one of Gilbert’s favorite (sad) love songs, “Missing You.” “We had our proposal with our breakup song, which is great,” Gilbert cracked.

Former Roseanne star Gilbert came out as a lesbian in 2010 — revealing that she and TV producer Alison Adler had been in a longterm relationship since 2001. The former couple share son Levi, 8 and daughter Sawyer, 5, and split in August 2011. Gilbert and Perry stepped out later that year.

Well, that was quick work. Compared to Sara being in another relationship for a decade and never getting engaged, now she’s with Linda, and this has happened relatively fast. I guess when you know … you just know, right? Congratulations to Linda and Sara!

I like the musical production proposals that are popping up all over the Internet – so fun and memorable. Congrats to them. On a side note, when LP is wearing a hat, I momentarily think it’s Tom Petty.

I love that somehow John Waite was involved in this proposal, but this only becomes the greatest proposal ever if he sang “Every Time I Think of You” from his Babys’ days instead of “Missing You”.

While I’m happy for them – LOVE THESE TWO!! – I agree it does seem a little fast for a marriage proposal….wonder how much history they had…friendship? prior to their stepping out as a couple….

“What does a lesbian drive on her second date?”
