Karl Lagerfeld: ‘I never said that Adele was fat, I said that she was a little roundish’

On Sunday, we had a rare feel-good story about Karl Lagerfeld. Honestly, all of the Karl Lagerfeld stories make me feel good, but I’m half in-love with Mr. Lagerfeld and his delicious bitchiness. But Sunday’s story was all about Karl Lagerfeld declaring that if the law allowed it, he would probably marry his cat. Which is probably what Jeremy Irons was trying to warn us about repeatedly, right? Choupette Lagerfeld is not really Karl’s fluffy princess daughter. Choupette Lagerfeld is Karl’s fluffy princess mistress and he would make an honest woman out of Choupette if the law allowed it.

Anyway, those Choupette quotes came from an interview Karl did with CNN’s Alina Cho. And there’s MORE. Of course there’s more. Karl is wonderful at giving away deliciously bitchy soundbytes. It seems Karl has more to say about Pippa Middleton and Adele!

Maybe it’s just not fashionable to be apologetic? Outspoken designer Karl Lagerfeld, who followed his infamous Adele diss last year for being “a little too fat” with a harsh Pippa Middleton putdown (“I don’t like [her] face. She should only show her back,” he reportedly opined), is hardly repentant about his cruel declarations.

In promo clips for CNN’s Fashion: Backstage Pass, the notoriously opinionated and eccentric designer appears unapologetic about his insults. When host Alina Cho asks him, “You did not like the face of Pippa Middleton?” He replies, “No, I think her sister looks better,” referring to older sis Kate.

As for his fat-shaming of Adele, the 79-year-old Lagerfeld offers a limp clarification: “I never said that she was fat, I said that she was a little roundish. A little roundish is not fat. But for such a beautiful girl, after that she lost eight kilo [17.6 pounds], so I think the message was not that bad,” he tells Cho.

The designer also opens up about his extreme love for his cat Choupette. “You know, there is no marriage yet for human beings and animals,” he tells Cho. “I never thought that I would fall in love like this with a cat.”

[From Us Weekly]

First, the Adele thing – originally, Lagerfeld WAS quoted as using the word “fat”. He allegedly said, “The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice.” He later backtracked a little, saying: “I’d like to say to Adele that I’m your biggest admirer. I actually prefer Adele, she is my favorite singer. I know how it feels when the press is mean to you in regards to your appearance. Adele is a beautiful girl. She is the best. And I can’t wait for her next CD.” Which is probably the closest he’s ever come to an honest-to-God apology. For Karl, that IS an apology and it sounded sincere. And if he’s now saying that she’s “roundish”… well, she is, right? I think Adele owns that. I doubt she would be offended, although I think we should all be offended that some people still won’t shut up about her weight even after all that she has accomplished.

As for the Middleton sisters, Karl originally said about Pippa, “I don’t like her face…she should only show her back.” Then he tried to back-track (hilariously) and claimed, “I didn’t mean that! I only meant I don’t think her make-up is right; she has a roundish face and round eyes and she should pick another make-up for the eyes.” Which is like a double-burn. Not only does Karl hate Pippa’s face, he’s also shading her makeup. I like that he’s just made his peace with hating Pippa now – and why not? I do think Kate is the prettier sister. Poor Pips.

Pipa’s makeup is rather bad though.

    • whipmyhair says:

All the Middleton ladies have an eyeliner problem. Just say no!

      • listenUP says:

I wonder which sister has the better “posh” accent.

And I hope that whole marrying your pet thing doesn’t ever become legal cause bestiality is really gross.

“Have you met my wife/husband Mr/Ms. Purssuasive?”

Would the owner/spouse remove the former marital status if it were part of the name or update it and give the pet a persons name?

Hmm so many questions that shouldn’t even be thought about!

        “Mrs. Ms. Purrsuasuve” Aha

  2. marie says:

haha, just stick to your original comment Karl-your clarification only makes it funnier.

  3. Dref22 says:

And you’re ugly. Did I say ugly? I meant not too pretty!

  4. Thora says:

Karl looks like he belongs in a David Lynch movie. Or a wax museum.

  5. Lucy2 says:

Oh Karl. You’re just a little bit of an a-hole.
(Though I can’t argue with him on Pippa’s makeup)

  6. Andrea says:

What’s wrong with being a little round again? Oh wait. I forgot. Carry on.

  7. Lynn says:

Don’t apologise Karl. Adele is Fat. that is a fact.

    • lady mary. says:

same goes for pippa ,she ain’t pretty nor a fashion icon so its ridiculous by the media to make her seem one, dont backtrack Karl!

    • F5 says:

OMG that was funneh, Lynn. 😀

    • LL2 says:

I agree, she is fat. No one looks at her and thinks she is a size 2 or a size 8 for that matter and that is fine, everyone is not meant to be a size 2. She shouldn’t be insulted for being called fat, she needs to own it and continue to do her thing. I mean, if someone called me short, why would I be offended? I am short. No one looks at my 5’4″ height and thinks I’m 5’11”.

  8. Willa says:

    Really?

  9. 5thHouse says:

“an honest woman out of Choupette.”
    LMAO!

  10. most-celebrities-suck says:

he has every right to voice his opinion. the only reason people found pippa pretty was because they were in love with the idea of a sexy royal. I think most people’s reaction to pippa was forced, it was kind of like they believe they had to find her hot cos everyone else did. There is nothing remarkable about pippa. I do know that some women are not conventionally pretty, but they do turn us on, pippa is neither. WORD

  11. Lucretia says:

He’s actually right about Pippa. Her back, in the bridesmaid’s dress, was terrific.

  12. Glaughy says:

    LOL!!

Hilarious. And he’s right about Pippa especially.

  13. Faye says:

Ah, he’s entitled to express his opinions and he doesn’t have to apologize for them, even if they do make him sound like kind of an asshole. I mean yes, Adele is overweight, but why is it necessary for him to point it out? She doesn’t claim to be a fashion icon, and she’s not one
of his acolytes. And I LOL’d at his somehow taking credit for her weight loss. I’m so sure, Karl.

He’s welcome to throw shade on the Middleton sisters anytime. Although to be honest, they wear the same makeup, so why does he like Kate better?

  14. kiddo says:

I never said that Karl Lagerfeld looked like the walking dead, I said he looked Dracula-ish.

  15. Adrien says:

Hilarious back-tracking. “And I can’t wait for her next CD” ~ that’s the funniest thing he said.

  16. moon says:

Karl’s right about Pippa, she’s not unattractive but she’s nothing much to shout about either.

  17. lisa says:

i feel the same way about my cat and pippa’s face. she has the crazy eye.

  18. Aud says:

I agree with Karl about Pippa.
She [and her sister[ will not age well.
As for Adele. It’s quite obvious that she won’t be endorsing Chanel any time soon.
One has to be a stick insect/anorexic to wear Chanel.

  19. Anna says:

This is what you get for being honest! But really, I second him on every comment he threw in the Middleton direction.

  20. A says:

    LOL
He’s so right about Pippa’s eye make up (and Kate’s). They take the black eyeliner and circle it around their already round eyes plus it’s too harsh looking.
They need to wing it outwards to make them less roundish and more beautiful.

  21. Eleonor says:

About Pippa he said in two sentences what we’ve been saying for months (that’s why he is His Royal Bitchiness, compared to us, peasants) and he was spot on; about Adele it didn’t seem to bitchy his first quote.

  22. LaurieH says:

Adele is a heavy girl. No point trying to water that down by saying she’s “roundish”. She is what she is and she’s gorgeous and fabulously talented and her weight is irrelevent. She is a singer, not a model. To Uncle Karl, women are little more than glorified clothes hangers. Hard to take seriously the body critiques of a septegenerian who insists on squeezing his increasingly dangling bits into skinny jeans and has a closet full of 19th century collars. As to Pippa, on this I can not disagree. The raccoon eyeliner has to go.

  23. taxi says:

Alina Cho’s giant facial growth is very distracting. has she heard of concealer?

  24. jwoolman says:

He’s never seemed malicious to me. If he’s speaking in English, I would consider that it’s not his native language so he’s not going to get the nuances right all the time. If he’s not speaking in English – then we’re reading a translation. Translations can often be wrong in such contexts. I do scientific translation, which is much much easier than trying to translate this kind of material (well, at least if you’re a scientist…) The translator for this kind of translation had to thoroughly understand the cultural context and language patterns while the speaker was chatting away and gesturing (which the translator might not even see, if working only from a transcript), then write it in English- which has a whole different cultural context and a wide range of linguistic patterns to try to match up. Words in different languages don’t match up one-to-one. At best, they are represented by intersecting circles of meaning. And those words each have a different emotional impact and history in the different languages. This is why choosing the right word is often tough and debateable. It’s a wonder more wars aren’t started because of not-quite-right translations. If an interpreter is involved (trying to simultaneously or consecutively repeat the speaker’s words on the spot in the other language) – chances for mistakes are even greater, although at least an interpreter sees all the body language usually.

    Eccentric? Creepy, more like.
