Jessica Simpson: ‘I am just one of those pregnant women who gains a lot of weight’

As we discussed yesterday, Jessica Simpson finally debuted baby Ace Knute on the cover of this week’s Us Weekly. Ace is two months old, so Jessica waited much longer with Ace than she did with Maxwell’s People Mag cover. Some sources claimed that Jessica wanted to do another People Mag cover with Ace, but that People wasn’t interested in paying her for the second round of baby pics. Now Page Six says that Jessica went to Us Weekly and that they paid her “as much as $100,000” for Ace’s photos. I think she got $3 million for Maxwell’s pics, so this was definitely a “step down” as far as media prestige and money. Thankfully, Us Weekly also did an exclusive interview with Jessica and we have more excerpts. Yesterday, we learned that Jessica had a C-section with Ace Knute (she had one with Maxwell too). Today we learn that Jessica doesn’t care for people who bully and body-shame pregnant women:

Bullying pregnant women: “I will never understand why people give pregnant women such a hard time. We are creating a human life: I think we get every excuse in the world to eat a doughnut! It’s very hurtful, especially when you’re so emotional and going through all of these hormonal changes. I felt for Kim [Kardashian] — I knew exactly what she was going through.”

She’s all boob: “I am just one of those pregnant women who gains a lot of weight. I have really big boobs. I have my curves. Even trying as hard as I did with Ace, I still gained.”

Eric helped her through it: “I had a good support system. Eric has always appreciated my body.”

On Ace: “People say he looks like me. The moment he came out, I thought, He’s going to have a really strong personality, but he’s going to be a little bit more sensitive.”

On Eric: “He is beyond any father that has ever existed. I can honestly say that I have not had to change many diapers. At the same time, he makes me feel like I’m an incredible mom and still a great lover and woman.”

Wedding plans: “We now have a where and a when. Everybody has just been so anxious for us to get married – including us. And everyone has watched our love develop throughout becoming parents. When we actually do get married, it will be that much more intimate and beautiful.”

[From Us Weekly via The Mail]

Of course she still gained weight when she was pregnant. You are supposed to gain weight! But she did seem to have a much easier pregnancy with Ace, probably because she wasn’t gobbling down slutty brownies every two seconds. That being said, I agree with her. She was always going to get big all over with her pregnancies – that’s just her body type, and that was just Kim Kardashian’s body type too. Not every woman can carry like Gisele!

What are the thoughts on all of her quotes about Eric? On one side, I’m happy for her that she has such a loving and supportive partner. On the other side… what else does he have to do? I mean, it’s not like he has a lot going on. Of course he’s changing diapers. That’s all he has going on other than golf and impregnating her again.

I have the same body type as Jessica and Kim so I know if I ever get pregnant I will probably carry the extra weight like they did. Not super excited about that.

    • Lilo says:

Yep…me too. I am small, have big boobs and a nice curvy hourglass figure. That’s not gonna end well, I’ll be a tiny little barrel of lard 😀

    • Erinn says:

      Here here!

5’2″ big up top, and wide hips. Not a good sign.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Ditto….I gain weight at the drop of a hat.

I am not looking forward to getting pregnant…

    • Hakura says:

I feel your pain. I went my whole life being naturally tiny. 5’1, about 100-105lbs (no matter what I ate). Average B-cup boobs, but I do have a nice ‘bubble butt’.

Then I started a certain medication. I started to gain weight suddenly, & it distributed oddly, focusing from just underneath my belly button, down to my upper thighs. (But above my belly button? I still had *abs* you could see. It makes absolutely NO sense). I gained 25lbs, & am still fighting to be rid of them.

Only ‘good’ to come out of it was that I went up a bra size. (It took some getting used to, after being the one cup size my whole life).

I don’t even want to think about what pregnancy would do to my figure. x___X

    • Petee says:

Jessica yes, Kim no.Jessica is real Kim is not.I am not on board with her supporting Kim and her backlash because she is not your normal pregnant woman. Most woman don’t have fat injections before pregnancy in different places to blow up when you actually do gain some weight.Thats what happens when you get that kind of work done.I am sure Kim was horrified too just like the rest of us.I like Jessica. Not the smartest person but completely harmless.

    • Amory says:

Don’t despair. I am a curvy Italian woman and I did just fine with all three. Keep moving as much as comfortable and be good to yourself when your time comes.

I think the problem is that these are women who are used to starving to keep their figures, so they really have no idea how to eat — it’s feast or famine for them.

    • Amanda says:

I’m petite 5’3″ and have a pear shaped figure. If I get pregnant one day, I’m gonna look like hell.

    • Caz says:

I’m the same height and body shape as Jess (without Kim’s large bottom thank goodness) and when pregnant I didn’t look like either of them.

You may be pleasantly surprised when pregnant. Eat healthy and exercise. Don’t eat crappy food for the sake of it. It’s been well-documented that Jess ate extremely badly during her first pregnancy. Enjoy pregnancy. It’s a lovely time for most.

    • Nina W says:

Jessica ate too much food and put on too much weight during her first pregnancy. Most people don’t take pregnancy as a license to eat everything in sight and do just fine.

  2. Marianne says:

“I am just one of those pregnant women who gains a lot of weight”

Cause you stuff your face with cheetos and cupcakes.

And to clarify : I’m not trying to shame her, saying that she should have eaten Kale all day or whatever. Im just saying she got really huge but she ate crap foods all the time. Not just because of her body weight.

    • lem says:

I think her point is that she didn’t do the junk food bender with Ace’s pregnancy and she still gained a significant amount of weight. You have no idea what she ate this time around so it’s pretty harsh to state she must’ve been eating cheetos all the time and that’s why she gained.

      • Diana says:

I’m not pregnant but I carry around some extra weight, and people just assume I must shove cupcakes and cheetos down my throat all day long too. I actually eat fairly healthy, and not that much but I have always just struggled with my weight.

Its just a mindset people have about those who are not naturally thin. I don’t think we’ll ever change their minds.

    • Anna says:

I love to stuff my face with Cheetos and cupcakes, and I’m not even pregnant!

    • Devon says:

You never know how you’re going to gain weight when pregnant. I for sure thought I’d blow up and now at 20 weeks, I’ve barely gained anything despite eating everything in sight. Biology is crazy.

      • girlnbayou says:

You couldn’t even TELL I was preg at 6 months. But at 7 months? Holy cow! It didn’t matter what I ate. I gained.. And I was tiny before. Hourglass for sure but tiny . Come to find out as preparation for nursing your body goes into a sort of caloric storing mode and you build up fatty stores to nourish the baby when feeding time comes. I also wonder if there is any sort of correlation between having winter babies verses warm season babies. Think about it; is it a primal thing? Like does our body naturally fatten up when it anticipates a baby born in the winter months because historically those were leaner times? Im just wondering out loud now because both my babies were born in winter. Obviously this doesn’t apply to JS since she gave birth during the spring/summer. Ok. I’m rambling. . Just ignore me now.

      • Devon says:

I’m due in mid January and you’ve got me panicking! lol I asked about the minimal weight gain at my last appointment and my midwife said not to worry since I lost weight at first.

I feel for anyone that gets harassed about weight gain during pregnancy. Yeah, there is some control but it’s such a crazy out of control experience that you’ve just got to roll with it.

      • girlnbayou says:

Congrags @ devon reply comment posted below for whatever reason

      • Denise says:

You’re only halfway through, you will probably gain it nearer to the end and please don’t get bummed out over it, you’re supposed to be huge when the baby is about to drop! I was very small until around the 7th month and then I blew up. Not like Jessica, but my body completely changed. After I had my daughter, I looked pregnant for about 6 weeks but just chilled out about it and thanks to the breastfeeding and absolutely nothing else but taking care of my daughter, I fit into my old jeans in 3 months. I’m not saying I didn’t need some toning but the weight dropped without doing stupid things to get there. All the best with your baby!

    • Sloane Wyatt says:

IMO, Jess is like a lot of people and self reportedly eats for pleasure and for boredom or any other host of emotional reasons.

It certainly doesn’t help that you actually have to wean yourself off the highly addicting unholy combination of corn syrup, salt, fake fats, and chemical additives, just like you have to with quitting drugs. Diving into a carton of ice cream, (like I did yesterday and the day before that), stimulates the brain region central to addictive behavior & sets you up with almost uncontrollable cravings for the next meal.

Eating real food is the only cure for the cycle of junk food consumption, and you have to fight against it your whole life. It can be done, but the real stresses of pregnancy can easily cause you to lose a temporary battle with weight.

      • girlnbayou says:

Aww congrats! Dont panic. Listen to what your body tells you to do, it will lead the way. I was just wondering if there was a correlation. It seems as if there would be.

    • DesertPoppy says:

+1000 I agree with Marianne and Sloane Wyatt. I think Jessica was so used to restricting her food before she got pregnant to remain in movie star shape that when she got pregnant she let herself go nuts with the food and gained a ton of weight. Then she has trouble going back to healthier eating habits because the food is addictive like Sloane Wyatt said. I am not really sure how healthy her previous Hollywood diet was though, a lot a actresses seem to have terrible eating habits.

      • anon33 says:

This happened to me after my wedding. I had been eating clean for 4 years and exercising 3-4 times per week. I FELT GREAT, and I was at a “normal” weight for my height.

Then, my husband and I went on a year long “treat yo’self!” bender after our wedding where we pretty much ate whatever we wanted, and subsequently I have gained 25-30 lbs.

ITA, it is SO HARD to fight the cravings for bad food and to go back to eating clean. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I feel 100% better when I eat better, but then I get a craving and the next thing you know I’ve downed half a jar of Nutella :/

  3. Brooke says:

Waiting to see if Baby #3 is on the way given her past history.

  4. Nelly says:

    Her babies are darling.

  5. mel2 says:

Maxwell loves the camera. I wish America wasnt so critical when it comes to body image. To comment on a pregnant woman’s body is sinful.

    • Amory says:

Well, if it makes you feel any better, she sure turned a profit off of it. I would sympathize if these celebs didn’t do the US or People cover in bikinis, but they live for the publicity, good or bad, and are constantly using their bodies for attention. They also love selling the baby pics. They use their pregnancies and weight gains and losses for money and fame, and then scream unfair. Yeesh.

  6. Bridget says:

Some people DO have bodies that just gain a lot of weight during pregnancy, and that’s okay. The important thing is to remember that it’s not just an aesthetic choice – when moms spend their pregmancy eating sugar and crap their risk of gestational diabetes, which can be dangerous both for mom and baby. At the end of the day, some people have different bodies, and sometimes you end up being the pregnant lady that gains 60 pounds despite your best intentions. And it’s okay to habe the occasional treat, just not a tray (or box, or carton) at a time.

    • Little Darling says:

I’m a total gainer! Regularly a size 4-6 I gained 65 pounds with both pregnancies. it just happened, but I also had BIG 9 pound babies.

That said, my muscle memory was awesome due to working out every day prior to pregnancy and doing lots of Pilates and yoga. At the sex week mark, when it was safe to work out I made it part of my routine with the babies to set aside an hour and a half each day to work out. Not always easy, but it was my therapy.

Coupled with breastfeeding the weight fell off pretty naturally. In fact I think I had my best body after my second baby.

      • Bridget says:

I got almost to 200 pounds both times, but carried well so it was kind of a shock, but even eating well and really exercising (both during and after pregnancy) it still took 8 or 9 months for it to really come off. Sometimes it just happens that way. And count yourself lucky – some women’s bodies release a hormone when breastfeeding that causes them to hold the weight on. No fun.

        Sex week, huh?

  7. mommak918 says:

    I feel for Jess.
My first pregnancy, I enjoyed myself. I didn’t eat ‘slutty brownies’ or butter on poptarts. However, I did enjoy my food. I was a bit underweight when I became pregnant…I gained over 50lbs.

For my second pregnancy, I watched what I ate. I exercised at the gym, continued lifting weights and did cardio and I gained 46lbs. Lol.

Sometimes your body can easily gain….I am like that. And I had lots of people surprised with how much weight I put on…but pregnancy is a weird thing. Your body is NOT YOUR OWN….it’s like it has it’s own mind!

    • Khm says:

This. Pregnancy was really the first time I realized how little control I have over my body. All I could do was exactly what my body wanted me to do. Sleep? Ok. Eat everything lemony and cold? Ok. Push rIght now? If you insist.

    • Emily says:

Yep. For my first pregnancy, I tried very hard to eat fruits, veggies, lean proteins, all the good stuff. I gained 60 pounds. It was crazy. I had to work really hard to get most of it off.

For my second pregnancy, I didn’t worry at all about how I ate. I didn’t pig out or anything, but if I was busy I ate fast food, if I wanted some cookies I had some. Gained the recommended 30 pounds and was back to my pre-pregnancy weight shortly after he was born.

  8. Jessica says:

If Eric just wants to be with his family instead of getting a second rate job just so he can say he has one, I’m not sure what’s so wrong with that? He seems to be an involved Dad and he and Jessica seem happy, so what’s the problem? Jessica has a ton of cash, neither of them need to work to support their family anymore. If it’s about the fact that he’s financially supported by a woman, shouldn’t you be throwing shade at every woman out there who has access to her partner’s income?

It’s not like he could ever out earn her anyway, so she’s always going to be the main breadwinner.

    • Annabelle says:

Totally agree with this. Seems like in every post that even mentions her fiancé, there’s someone snarking on him being a stay-at-home dad. People seem much more accepting of SAH mothers, probably because it’s much more traditional. IMO, unless people plan on shading every SAH mother or housewife who depends on their husband/partner for money, food, shelter, etc., then it’s totally unacceptable to make snide or nasty comments when the situation is reversed.

    • lem says:

exactly. and the “well he doesn’t have anything better to do” statement bothers me. he has basically an unlimited income at his disposal so there is a lot that he COULD be doing instead but he chooses to spend that time with his family. i think that’s sweet.

      • Diana says:

Imagine if that statement was made about a stay at home mom? Yikes.

      • Isa says:

I’m so glad I’m not the only one. It’s so sexist to expect him to go out and get a job that he doesn’t need. His job is being a father. He seems like a good one that’s not ignoring his kids for video games or running around partying.

    • mayamae says:

I do get the impression they have an unconventional relationship compared to what we see traditionally. And I’m not implying there’s anything wrong with that. I get the same vibe off of them that I get off of Tori Spelling and her husband – at least with Tori’s first baby, when she was insecure about being a mom because her relationship with her own mom was so dysfunctional. She really sat back and let Dean do everything.

    • Jess says:

Also totally agree. Those kids are lucky to get so much time with their dad. As long as they are decent parents and find ways to also give back to their communities, I admire people who put family ahead of work. I could never judge anyone who puts time for home and kids first, no matter how rich or poor they may be or who the breadwinner in the family is.

    • anon33 says:

      Agree with this also.

I am the breadwinner, I make 30% more than my husband. He has told me repeatedly that he would love to be a SAH dad and would take over much of the parenting so I could still work. We would lose siginifcant resources if I were to quit my job, or even take significant maternity leave.

He is by no means lazy-he has worked for the same company for 13 years, since he was 17, and worked FT-in MANAGEMENT-while simultaneously earning his bachelor’s and performing with his band and releasing two albums.

When people say men like this must be lazy or must not have anything else to do, I just shake my head. It’s insulting and innacurate. My husband would rather have more of a balance between work, family, and hobbies instead of conforming to the American notion that ALL men MUST work 80+ hours a week under great duress and therefore ignore their families. And honestly I am positive he would be a better primary caretaker than I would be.

    • Bridget says:

It’s not shading Eric as a stay at home dad… But he basically stopped working the moment he got together with Jessica, even choosing not to go to Wharton for his MBA basically just a couple of months into their relationship. Basically, there have always been whispers that he’s a complete golddigger. There was some sketchiness about overlap between the previous girlfriend and Jessica as wrll. If she were smart she would either never actually marry him or have an incredibly stringent prenup.

  9. Khm says:

I am built like Jessica (short, curvy, very short waisted) and I gained 35lbs when I was pregnant and gave birth to a very large 9lb baby. People thought I was carrying twins at 5 months. Also, I was very swollen from the beginning. Nothing I did would make the swelling dissipate. I was huge. I felt like Jabba the Hut. It took months for all of the fluids to dissolve.

It’s not fair to compare a short, curvy woman with a short waist to a tall, lithe supermodel like Giselle. Tall women have more square footage for all of the fluids and swelling that comes with pregnancy. They also have a lot more room in the midsection for the baby. I saw Jessica in person years ago at the mall in Dallas, TX. She is tiny in real life. Tiny. She looked like the type that an additional 10 pounds would look like 20 pounds just because she is so small.

Also, she doesn’t do herself any favors with the caftans. She probably looks better in more tailored clothing like I do. The sharpness of the tailoring helps make me look less curvy and lengthens my very short waist so I look more proportional (legs for days….as much as a 5’4 woman can have). Can you imagine how much better she would look in a shorter , well tailored dress with appropriate undergarments and little flat shoes or a little wedge?

  10. roxy750 says:

I’m happy for her, I like her! What’s not to like?

  11. Tara says:

My bff was lost one of her twins at four months. Her remaining son was born beautiful and strong five months later but she grieved a lot for his brother. My cousin had a medical emergency and had a total abdominal hysterectomy although she and her husband were on Clomid, desperate to get pregnant. She still hasnt recovered from that.

Eat. Laugh. Love yoyrself and the children you are blessed to conceive, carry and deliver. Your heart far outgrows your old jean size.

    • nicegirl says:

You are lovely, Tara. great comment! THANKS!

      • Tara says:

tysm 🙁 It is hard to put that pain into words. Usually she is great and a wonderful, cool godmom and aunt but other times you can tell she is struggling. The worst part is that she was just supposed to have a partial oophrectomy but during the actual procedure the surgeon found bigger issues.
So when she was in recovery coming out of anasthesia she had no idea. When her doctor told her that she had received a full hysterectomy the nurses had to run in to sedate her. People could hear her screaming all the way out in the family waiting room.
If we discuss baby weight as a pleasant source of chit chat or bonding we take away the power of the media to make women ashamed of their beautiful bodies and the beautiful things they can do. Please please no more body snark.

      • Hakura says:

@Tara – I am SO sorry for what your Bff, & especially your cousin, have experienced. I know if that had happened to my Aunt & Uncle while they were trying so desperately to get pregnant, it would’ve just broken their hearts the same way. Ugh. I can just almost *hear* your cousin’s reaction to being told, because of the way you described it. I hope, even if it has to be through adoption, that they get to share their love with a child the way they’ve *so* wanted to.

Adoption was such a wonderful experience for my Aunt, (although it did take a few years to finally go through, but they had not specified anything about the child, gender/race/ect, & were happy no matter what). It was everything they hoped for.

    • Hakura says:

@Tara – I totally agree with @nicegirl. Your message was truly beautiful.

My Aunt & Uncle tried for more than 10 years, adopted 2, then on their 2nd bday, found out she was pregnant.Irony?

We don’t know if my brother (21 now) will ever be able to have a child, because he has Cystic Fibrosis, but has been extremely lucky & healthy, has a job/girlfriend/works out/gets tattoos xD

(Trying to figure out a ‘not gross’ way to word this…) CF causes the body’s natural fluids to be thicker. That includes his swimmers. They just don’t reach their destination.

He *wants* to have children at some point, & we’re just hoping science will be able to help him achieve his goal. You’re right that it’s a blessing not everyone gets to share in.

      • Tara says:

You sound like you would be an awesome auntie. I think your bro has an awesome attitude. Have you heard of a process called sperm washing? HIV positive men use it for conception. I wish I knew more about it but maybe it might pertain to your brother. Thank you for the kind words 🙂

      • Hakura says:

@Tara – Awww, Thank you SO much ♥‼ I really hope I can be as awesome an aunt as mine were for me. Especially as (at least at this point) I’ve never planned on having children of my own (although that could always change in the future), & I would *love* to have a close relationship if my brother does have children.

I had never heard of that! That’s really interesting… I will definitely look into it, & mention it to him. =) Thank you so much for the suggestion!

I so want my brother to have everything he wants out of life, especially something so important. (Not that he wouldn’t look into adoption, I’m sure, but I can understand that it means something to have one’s own children as well.)

  12. Lisa says:

Yeah, eating whatever you want (she admitted it!) has nothing to do with it. Spinnin’ it like cotton candy.

  13. Gayle says:

Why did she have C-sections? Medically necessary or, more likely, elective? Thought they were getting rid of the latter… bad choice.

    • Bodhi says:

A very large percentage of women who give birth in hospitals end up with c-sections. The combos of drugs given to speed up labor & the painkillers to make it hurt less can stress the baby, making it necessary to get the baby out quickly. Of course, this doesn’t happen for ALL hospital births, but it is very common.

Also, lots of doctors won’t do VBACs, so many women don’t have a choice after the first one.

      • Isa says:

She never did say. Her daughter’s size may have factored into one. Some women can birth them big babies fine, some women can’t, some women “end up looking like they had a csection down there.” My nurses words.

      • Bodhi says:

@Isa, I didn’t think she did. Not that its any of our business anyway!

    • Devon says:

Jessica is small and Maxwell was over 9 and a half pounds. It’s probable that she just couldn’t fit. With Ace, they don’t recommend VBACs unless it’s been 2+ years since the first caesarian.

      • Amanda says:

I also thought women weren’t supposed to have C-sections less than two years apart either. A C-section is a major surgery. Having two of them in a span of less than two years sounds crazy!

    • Tara says:

The rumor at the time was that she planned a c section so she could have a tummy tuck all at the same time. I dont know if this is medically possible but either way this doesnt strike me as Jessica’s style. She doesnt mind a few pounds unless she is prepping for a role. Her sister is thin though. Different genes I guess.

  14. MrsBPitt says:

I don’t think people would have been so critical of Kim Kardashians pregnant body, if she had not been wearing those horrible clothes and spike heels all the time…

  15. Claudia says:

So… her husband is a stay-at-home dad right?

  16. Cowgirl says:

“She was always going to get big all over with her pregnancies – that’s just her body type, and that was just Kim Kardashian’s body type too. Not every woman can carry like Gisele! ”

Yep. This is why I and a lot of other people were giving Bey the side eye. From the time she came on the scene, my friends and I joked about how big she would get when she got pregnant, because girls with her body type just do. She is the only woman I’ve *ever* seen in my entire life with her body type whose body bounced back like a skinny girl.

Let’s just say I’m still giving her the side eye on that one.

  17. laura says:

    WTH is a “slutty brownie”????

    • Nina W says:

IMO they’re gross, cookie dough, Oreo cookies and brownie mix all baked together. Sugar bomb anyone?
