Olivia Wilde shirtless in a black Gucci suit: sleazy or sophisticated?

Olivia Wilde

Okay, I admit that Olivia Wilde is starting to grow on me just a bit thanks in part to her recent discussion on turning 30. Her essay wasn’t exactly earth-shattering or expertly-crafted essay, but it was sharp and funny. It made me realize that there’s more to ol’ Livvy than gushing over Jason Sudeikis and bragging about their sex life. I’m trying to forget all of that for the moment.

Let’s do some fashion now, shall we? In these photos, Olivia works the London premiere of Rush (she plays Chris Hemsworth’s wife) in a very dramatic black Gucci pantsuit. This is actually a pretty amazing look for Olivia, who tends to veer between uneventful looks and gawd-awful Marchesa with no happy medium; but here, she looks really great. She’s showing just enough skin to look risque with this suit jacket and absolutely nothing on underneath except some strategically applied chest makeup with a “glistening” effect. This look took tons of guts to pull off, and Olivia accessorizes with just a simple pair of earrings, tousled waves, and bright red lips. Damn.

Regardless of how good Olivia looks, she’s promoting this movie (and the VOD-confined Drinking Buddies) like crazy, and she’s appealed to the internet by doing an “Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit. Here are some of the more amusing questions and responses:

Would she jam with Hugh Laurie? “I would definitely join Hugh’s band! But I’d have to play the triangle. A bluesy triangle.”

Why did she do The Incredible Burt Wondersone? “You’re charming.”

How to chat her up: “Hey Olivia, here’s a free beer.”

Clean shaven or beard? “I feel like I look better with a 5 o’clock shadow. Sort of gives me that rugged, Clive Owen look.”

Her favorite superhero: “Wwwwwwwwonder Woman of course”

Who would she travel back in time to visit? “The burning of Joan of Arc. I’d grab her and run and tell her that in the future Miley Cyrus is our saint and Joan must learn the art of twerking.”

Her fave line of dialogue: “‘I’m sweatin’ my balls off in here’ – Drinking Buddies

[From Reddit]

Clearly, she is joking about wanting to tell Joan of Arc about twerking. God, the entire world is talking about twerking now. It’s the awful dance that just won’t die.

Meanwhile, I am wondering how Rush will perform in theaters and how its success or failure will reflect upon Olivia. This girl desperately needs a hit because her career trajectory is starting to resemble Megan Fox if one replaces Michael Bay with an Italian prince. That probably sounds a bit too harsh because Olivia clearly possesses more wit and talent than Megan — it’s just that Livvy is really, really bad at picking film projects. We’ll see how this plays out though.

Just for kicks and because we didn’t cover these dresses, here are a few outfits that Olivia wore while promoting Drinking Buddies on Letterman a few weeks ago. The blue-green one is meh, but the white dress is very fresh and pretty.

I love the white dress and I like the tuxedo thing in theory, but I think it stumpy-fies her.

    • Florc says:

Does she have a long torso with shorter legs? Hmm… It does look odd and those dresses dont’ help.

      • Chutzpah says:

Yeah she does – same as me and its a bitch to dress, heels or stacks of some description can even you out but you still need to be careful.

    • Liv says:

I will never understand why people think it’s a good idea to go naked under you jacket. Ugh, so tacky!

    • Rosemary says:

      Top-tall = No cropped tuxedo.

Same applies to most females (Includung me).

  2. Marty says:

Even though I think it’s a great oufit, it’s kinda boring for the red carpet of a movie you’re in. I also think I would have liked the jacket better with two buttons.

  3. Peanut says:

I don’t really think any of the outfits are outstanding. Her Reddit AMA sounds mildly amusing though. So there’s that.

    • Mel says:

The redditors luuurve her. They began posting about her IAMA a week before she did it. It was the most anticipated reddit event I have seen in a very long time. And reddit sees some pretty huge stars.

The girl has a very solid fanbase, its just a question of leveraging it for mainstream success. And honestly I am not sure she is super ambitious in that way. Not everyone aspires to the A list.

  4. henderswife says:

She looks really good. A hell of a lot better than I would in that outfit and her confidence shines. Good for her.

  5. Karen says:

The tux may have not been sleazy if it wasn’t pulled so tight to show off more skin and she wasnt staving with her legs apart in most pictures. But she didn’t quite pull it off as classy

  6. E-v-E says:

this teal dress is amazing on her, tux not so much, even though I generally like this look but on someone with more ‘class’. I think she’s got shorter legs and the jacket like this just accentuates that.

    • emmie_a says:

That teal dress IS amazing on her! It’s her color and the style looks incredible. I love it – it’s sexy but classy.

I agree about the tux. It doesn’t look bad but not the best cut for her.

  7. Marjalane says:

Is it just me, or is her head a few sizes too big for her body? She’s got that Giada DeLaurentis bobble head thing going on.

    • Sunny :) says:

A lot of actresses have heads that are a few sizes too big for their bodies. Most of the time, because their bodies are fashionably much smaller than they would be if it weren’t for all the PTs, nutritionists, and what have you. They can shrink their bodies into size 0, but their skulls aren’t going to get any smaller; so they eventually just turn into stick figures with a huge head bobbing over a tiny body.

    • Hakura says:

@Marjalane – Not saying she doesn’t (have a head too big for her body), but I think the really ‘exaggerated’ harshly ‘wide’ jaw creates an oddly disproportionate look, too.

    • Samtha says:

I was getting ready to post the same exact thing, right down to the reference to Giada. It’s really noticeable in the pics on Lainey’s website–her head looks really disproportionate to the rest of her.

  8. janie says:

No, her head looks oddly proportioned.. I don’t care for the tux. It’s been overdone by so many others.

  9. Lex says:

The giant open V neck looks so odd when combined with her face and hair (styled like that)… Having that exposed skin somehow makes her face look wider and she don’t need no help there!

  10. booger says:

She’s super pretty but she wears too much makeup. It ages her.

  11. smee says:

Classic – I love the shirt-less tux look. Marlene Dietrich started the woman in a tux thing; Bianca Jagger added the shirt-less part. So hot if done correctly. I think she looks perfect.

  12. wtf says:

    In Defense of Twerking:
I would just like to make an argument defending twerking. While you will never see it at a White House ball, it is in fact a dance form that requires some skill. This is evidenced by Hanna Montanna’s complete inability to do it. I am not judging, because I can’t do it either. The difference being that I don’t get on television in front of millions of people and try.
I suggest visiting a local strip club, or you tube and watching a woman (or man) that can actually twerk. Their bodies (aka booty) defy gravity. It’s actually quite mesmerizing.

oh and I LOVE Olivia Wilde

    • bns says:

      +1

And I’m sick of people talking about it like Miley invented it or something. It’s been around for years.

    • Hakura says:

@wtf – I know, she really has made it universally hated by shoving it in people’s faces (& Robin Thicke’s crotch) all the time. It’s like everything she touches becomes completely annoying & taboo.

I sure as hell can’t do it, either. It is rather fascinating to watch. Before seeing it, I didn’t even know you could move your butt muscles like that.

    • Bubbles says:

I find it to be incredibly trashy, and I’ve seen people do it properly.

  13. TheyPromisedMeBeer says:

I don’t have a problem with the “forgot her shirt part”, but if there’d been a button higher up on her tuxedo jacket so she wasn’t exposing as much skin, I think the look would have been much sexier – a peek instead a peep show. But I’m also old school like that.

    • tracking says:

I completely agree. This look has been done before, and much better (good balance of sexy and tasteful), by Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie. I just get too much try hard from this girl, which is a shame, because she has a lot going for her.

    • Hakura says:

@TheyPromisedMeBeer – Agreed. I think this look would’ve been more suited to a magazine photoshoot.

If she’d done it the way you described, it would’ve been a more ‘classy’ type of sexy, as opposed to ‘Oops! 1 of my buttons fell off & I didn’t notice until now! Anyone got some flesh-tone pasties?’

  14. bns says:

Yawn. She tries way too hard in every interview.

  15. JudyK says:

Black tuxedo suit…too much look at me, even though she has the body for it. It would be okay with a nude bodysuit under it.

She doesn’t need to resort to attention-grabbing exposed looks for attention. Unlike some others, she actually has talent.

  16. Eleonor says:

    Her cheekbones are scaring.

    • Hakura says:

@Eleonor – Glad to know I’m not the only one! They do look particularly sharp in these pics. It makes her jaw look even more exaggerated than it already is.

  17. GMarchetti says:

    Sorry, Olivia…

I love you (I really do, since I was 17 and you were making out with Misha Barton), but NO, you’re too whore-y like that.

  18. Hakura says:

I hate to say this, bc I know she can’t help it, but her harsh, sharp ‘square’ jawline makes it so I can’t find her attractive. They immediately attract my attention in every pic, & I can’t seem to get beyond them to find her other features beautiful. They’re too distracting, to me.

  19. Aww says:

This sounds awful, but I think the taller, slinkier types look better w/ the no shirt under my tuxedo style. Like models pull it off well. Or La Blachette of course. Add Queen Tilda as well.

They style her awfully. And her makeup ages her. She needs to refresh her look b/c I do think she can look a lot better, especially if she’s aiming to be A list.

  20. Trek Girl says:

I’m not a fan of Wilde’s but I love that style and always have. I’m going to have to see if I can pull it off one of these days.

She looks great from the neck down. From the neck up, she looks a bit like a bobble head.

  21. Bee says:

It’s her stance that is ruining the look. If she would just stand up straight and tall, she wouldn’t look so stumpy.

  22. Lauren says:

The tuxedo looks sleazy on her. It might work on someone else. It does make her look stumpy; it’s just not flattering to her figure.

Also the makeup is too heavy; come to think of it, she usually wears heavy makeup. It ages her and adds a slight Old French Whore vibe.

Basically I’m really f*cking tired of her. Bye, Olivia! No seriously, take some time off…

  23. snappyfish says:

i so do not get the appeal of this chick.

  24. miriam says:

That shirtless look looks very dated, like she just stepped out of 1994.

I think I have only ever seen her in The OC, and I liked her in that. So I don’t have much of an opinion on her acting.

She seems to be pigeon-toed in a lot of her pictures…

  25. DesertPoppy says:

The suit looks really sleazy and the makeup in those photos is very heavy, not a good look overall. Her face reminds me of Celine Dion in the suit photos which is odd because she doesn’t normally remind me of her.

  26. John says:

The fact that she is completely flat-chested with very angular features makes her look like a gender-bender in the suit, it needs something under it, even a camisole would be sexy but appropriate. As she’s wearing it, it just looks trashy and try-hard.
I like the teal dress on her.

On a side note, I’m guessing all is not well in Wildeworld. She’s always had that pronounced bulimic jaw, but it’s even wider than it was a few months ago, indicating additional purging, possibly due to stress?

  27. bobbiesue says:

She is beautiful and very bright but there in NOTHING sophisticated about this. It looks like she was having crazy fun sex (yet again) with Jason Sudeikis, realized she had to get to this event, grabbed his tuxedo jacket by accident and ran. Where is the under layer????

  28. Ginger says:

She is small breasted enough to get away with this without it looking sleazy but I refer back to Jodi Foster who pulled it off way better IMHO. But that doesn’t mean that Olivia doesn’t look good here. I like the bold lipstick. Sometimes Olivia looks really pretty and other times I think she doesn’t. As a photographer I see it as as an angle issue. From some angles she looks drop dead gorgeous and others kind of fug. But her eyes are always so beautiful. That’s what the focus should be on her always.

  29. OriginallyBlue says:

I love the beige shoes. I like all her outfits here in theory but they all look a little off.

  30. Really? says:

I love her even more after seeing her in the movie “Drinking Buddies.” She is so cool, and she looks good in anything she wears.
