Here are some new photos from the London set of Mortdecai, the new Johnny Depp film, where Depp plays some kind of art dealer on the hunt for Nazi gold. One part National Treasure, one part Indiana Jones, and one part typical Johnny Depp, I guess. As we saw last November, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor also have supporting parts in the film. And now we can see that Gwyneth and Johnny (and Jeff Goldblum!) have some scenes together.
Last month, there were some stories about Gwyneth trying to spread her Goop on Johnny and he maybe didn’t appreciate it. I don’t really understand how Gwyneth has ANY A-list friends whatsoever, but she does and some of them seem to like her or at least tolerate her (although I do think it’s interesting that most of her high-profile friendships, like with Madonna and Beyonce, have gone down in flames). It’s possible that Johnny and Gwyneth have known each other for years and they get along just fine. Or it’s possible that Gwyneth exhausts everyone she knows.
So, what does the body language of these photos say to you? I’ve only selected a few from the larger photoset, but here’s my reading: Jeff Goldblum and Goop are tight. They are ass-kissing, flirty friends. He finds her charming and she simpers winningly in his presence. Johnny sort of likes Jeff, enough to joke around with him. But when Jeff leaves the group, Johnny goes to sit down by himself. Gwyneth traipses over to Johnny and he avoids making eye contact with her as she bears down on him, getting closer. She only sits down for a moment before Johnny squirms away uncomfortably. My reading? Gwyneth wants to be ass-kissing friends with Johnny and he’s not into it at all. I bet she was talking about her stupid New Year’s cleanse.

People in her field (actors, directors, producers) seem to get along with her. In fact, they all seem to actually like her. On the other hand, I have a friend who works in wardrobe whose face turns to stone at the mention of Goop.
I’d believe it–I think GOOP is one of those people who are nice and polite, WHEN they’re in the company of equals (fellow high profile celebrities) or ‘superiors’ i.e powerful producers and directors. Because it’s not that hard to play nice in front of someone who could get you fired, or maybe pass on recommendations that will mean something. Just like Jonah Hill. I’ve heard a ton of stories about what a jerk he is to the waitstaff–a few of them on here. About how he comes in with a big group, wants everyone to know WHO he is, but doesn’t want anyone approaching him, leaves a huge mess on the table, and doesn’t tip.
I agree Virgilia – I can totally picture her being nice to the other higher ups and and looking down on everyone else.
lucy2–there was also this story, from a fellow poster, maybe about a year ago–this person was friends with someone who went to one of Steven Spielberg’s kids’ bar mitzvah’s (I think she was related to the rabbi). Apparently Goop came up, with her friends, to where the rabbi and his group was, and told them to get up, because her and her friends wanted to sit there.
I think JD’s body language looks uncomfortable, but who knows why? Amusing to speculate, but he could be nervous, he could have a backache, who knows?

Yeah, I have to agree. I’m not getting much of a negative body language vibe either. Based on the lighting in the photos, it doesn’t look like the weather is all that zippy. To me, they just look like everyone else does while at work. They are obviously between takes, so….I mean. It’s just a lot of waiting around.
I like Goop. She’s annoying at times, but in interviews she comes across as likable. I also like Johnny, but I wish his midlife crisis would end already. They seem fine to me in these photos..
I find Johnny’s neverending midlife crisis more annoying than Gwyneth. And their body language seems fine in these pictures . Just because the media decided they hate Goop, doesn’t mean every actor out there will too.
I agree! I like her too, even though she does say some ridiculous stuff, there are much worse people out there. Obviously, a lot of people who actually know her in real life agree. She has a lot of friends, so there must be something redeeming about her. This is a non-story IMO.
I agree. I don’t find her as disagreeable as we are supposed to. She sometimes comes across as removed from the average person but apart from that she is pretty harmless. I actually side eye Depps midlife crisis more.
Not an obsessive fan of either, but to me Johnny still seems humble (relatively speaking!) despite humble beginnings; Gwyneth was born on 3rd base and is happy to endlessly remind us that she hit a home run.

I agree. You can say that he had a douchey spell over ‘Lone Ranger’—I think he was getting defensive about what people were saying. You can trash him for that–but now he’s getting back to work, and is making some good movies. ‘Transcendence’ (I think I got the title wrong) looks really good–it’s not even my kind of movie, but I’ll probably watch it. And his current project looks really good.
I’m not really understanding this midlife crisis thing–how is it a mid life crisis when your relationship didn’t work out? And hadn’t been working out in a few years–if I’m remembering right. From what I remember, he and Vanessa had been living and working separately for at least two years–basically they would meet up and spend time with the kids, as a family. Shortly before they announced it, they were on a yacht, spending time with their kids—basically that they were a lot more comfortable together now that they weren’t together.
The only thing I didn’t like in his break up with Vanessa is when his publicist ran that ‘It’s all Vanessa’s fault’ PEOPLE cover–which was really douchey. But the speculation was that he was really close with his publicist, and she went off the reservation–which, to be fair, it’s still his fault that he let that bs go through. But he hasn’t said a bad word about her, apart from that.
I like him with Amber. I like Amber when she isn’t spouting off this ‘I’m an artist’ bs. If she stops doing that, then I’d like her better. I don’t think she can act–but I think she and Johnny are a good match. It’s not like he got with the first hot girl he saw–he and Amber were really good friends. I remember when there was speculation that they were together (while she was with Tasya)–he bought her a horse, and they would go riding together on his ranch (in Mexico??). She also loves vintage cars–so I can see them having something to talk about, and them having a lot of mutual interests.
So it’s not like he picked the first one he saw—and it’s also not like he’s trying to dress younger (he does ridic though, but it’s always been like that), or is trying to act any other way than he always has. But his publicist still works for him and Johnny never denied any of those accusations or came to Vanessa’s defense when those US weekly stories came out, and there were multiple sources stating that US was a direct contact of Johnny’s. So I don’t think it’s fair to say the piblicist went rogue and started feeding negative stories to the press, Johnny had to be okay with it on some level. If not, why would you let your publicist spread negative stories to the press about the mother of your children?

It’s been a while, so I’d have to reread everything, but beyond that PEOPLE cover, I’ve never seen or read any tab stories about Vanessa. And even if there was–I don’t think denying any bs that the tabloids come up with is the right thing to do. Because all that does is feed them. There aren’t many, if any covers about Johnny/Vanessa/Amber–so ignoring it IS the right thing to do. And I didn’t say *I* believed the publicist had gone rogue–I said that was the speculation that was on this site. I also said that it was still Johnny’s fault. So I’m not blaming the woman in this case.
For all we know, it could’ve been a bitter break up. We don’t know the whole story, why their relationship went south. All we know is that they broke up, and probably were broken up for a while, before making it official. I’m not saying it was right–but maybe HE felt it was entirely justified in the heat of the moment, but regretted it afterwards. Who knows?

I think the thing that bugged me about the whole break up was —He and Vanessa had kept such a low profile, non-Hollywood type relationship. I really thought that since they had lived away from Hollywood, and kept their life private that they would actually stay together. I hate that almost no Hollywood couples stay together. I had hopes for them. Then when he left that kind of solid looking relationship for a “Hollywood” one that was so much more “on the grid” and with a younger woman, it was just disappointing and seemed hypocritical and very mid-life crisis like to me.
That Transcendence trailer looks terrible and Depp isn’t even trying to do some interesting acting. Sorry the guy seems like a greedy Hollywood douche bag to me. His whole artistic, bohemian persona is so fake its not even funny.

I’m usually indifferent to GOOP but there are days I am downright sympathetic. I really dont think she gets a fair shake on the interwebs. It just seems that people will take the most innocous stuff and try to twist it into their ready made narrative. Its amusing but also I feel bad for the woman.
As someone who is going through a scorching mid-life crisis, I don’t fault anyone for their decisions. As long as the kids are taken care of. It’s a trite thing to criticise someone for, especially as we’re all likely to go through it. Johnny has to get on with life as the world watches and judges. I think it should be re-named ‘mid-life change’ because that’s exactly what it is, and there’s nothing wrong with change. It’s life and personal evolution.
There is a midlife transition that most go through and a midlife crisis which is much different than personal evolution.
Taking stock of yourself at middle age and making some changes which are healthy and fulfilling is a midlife transition.
A midlife crisis is, in my opinion, depression exacerbated by fluctuating hormones and very often unresolved childhood issues/trauma. The men and women often display covert signs of depression such as sudden changes in appearance, sudden changes in former interests, excessive drinking and/or drug use, reckless spending and infidelity.
The spouse and children are blamed for the unhappiness and the marriage is most often broken. The long term financial and emotional damage to the family can be very difficult to overcome. The person in crisis often comes to regret their actions but finds it too late to make amends, and just as often they continue in their path searching for some magic something to make them feel better.
I know we are supposed to think Gwyneth is the most annoying person ever. But on the other hand Depp doesn’t seem to have a lot of female friends. And he is only interested in women young enough to be his daughter.

Agree. I always loved Johnny until he left his family for a woman half his age. Maybe Gwyneth makes him uncomfortable because he considers her too old. I still love him, I’ll still watch his movies, but I’m disappointed that he turned into such a cliche.
He didn’t leave Vanessa for Amber–at least not the public’s knowledge. Amber was still with her girlfriend, Tasya, when he broke up with Vanessa. There were a lot of rumors that they were together, but they weren’t seen together in a date like setting until earlier last year–in January, I believe. They went to a Rolling Stone concert.

But I agree–even if they were dating after Rum Diaries (which I heard they got along really well and were friends), I read that he and Vanessa hadn’t been together for a good two years before they split. As in, they were both apart and working, and every once in a while they would meet up and trade off with the kids, and/or spend time together as a family. Plus it’s harder to know, since they are very private. Even now, you don’t have a lot of pap pics of Johnny.

As for people like Laney’s gossip rag implying Johnny was responsible for US magazine’s less than flattering story on their break-up, that is just her dissing Johnny, which she does on a regular basis. Another rumor going around at the time was that Jolie was trying to seduce and bed Depp. But I doubt many would readily believe that one since it doesn’t put Depp in a bad light. Anyway, when they were promoting the film Depp spoke glowing about Jolie and vice versa, so I doubt they didn’t get along. Besides if you’re going to go off tab rumors to prove that one is not easy to get along with, Paltrow’s never ending collection stories of how insufferable she is way out weights any stories of how hard it is to be around Depp. So, if there is a problem between Depp and Paltrow, I doubt that it’s because of Depp.
Yep–and from what I remember that’s why they kept apart, when they weren’t filming. Because there were tons of rumors that there was going to be a really raunchy sex scene–and Vanessa was p-ssed, etc (which was ironic, because Vanessa wasn’t on that set or in the country at all–the kids were though). Their two sons–Jack and Pax (I think) played together. I saw an interview where Johnny said that they played a lot of video games together. I’m not sure if his older daughter was there–but I know his son was. And of course, that’s when Jon Voight came, as well as Brad’s parents.
But they did get along, I think he said he was surprised with how funny she was.

She could have gone into truck driving, education admin, doll making, anything else… I just don’t have a lot of sympathy for people who choose to go into fame driven fields. No one held a gun to her head and told her to pursue acting. She’s been scrutinized under the spotlight for decades now, and hasn’t broken by now: I think she’s acclimated and thrives under it, and a lot of that can be attributed to her personal delusion of how great and amazing of a person she thinks she is.
I love, love, love Jeff Goldblum, always have.. As for Johnny and Gwyneth, she knows his secrets and that probably makes him uncomfortable. I think she acts differently around fellow actors (not actresses) in that she probably simpers with them all. (well the ones she deems worthy anyway)

I always got the feeling that Bey and Goop have a bond in that they look the other way while their husbands fool around on the side. When she was friends with Goop, Madonna did the same thing with her then-husband Guy Ritchie. It was too coincidental that Gwyneth and Madonna had a falling out right at the same time Guy and Madonna divorced, Madge moved to NYC and Guy stayed in London where I think Gwyneth and Chris took his side.

I’ve seen lots of pictures from this same day on set in LOS ANGELES, and they seems to get along well. Johnny greeted her, they were chatting to each other and even – in the same way here we see a picture with Gwyneth smiling- Johnny was also smiling while chatting with her.
They were rehearsing a scene when sitting on the bench (because the bench was installed by people from the crew and the director was giving instructions to them in the bench too)

Johnny may be a total jerk, but he’s still INFINITELY more talented, interesting, and captivating on the screen than Goopy can ever hope to be.
I don’t hate Goopy the way some people seem to, and to each their own. But I find her insufferable. Her GOOP column is kind of ridiculous – please don’t pretend to be a “lifestyle guru” when your lifestyle tips are geared towards the top 1% of income earners.
But I’ve long thought her to be a phony and a put-on, since she presented an award to Anthony Hopkins and kept calling him “Antony,” like she lives in England and is therefore some special snowflake with special snowflake-like pronunciation. I think you may have described GP correctly when you said “pretentious.” This kind of sounds like her, and you know how much we hate pretentiousness, so perhaps that’s why she isn’t going over that well. However, I do remember her years ago, in her earlier movies, and I was definitely a fan. I thought she was a really good actress then, and I remember her with Brad Pitt, too. I don’t remember feeling she was snooty or pretentious, but she might have been. She was born to parents who gave her everything, so she grew up a bit privileged to begin with. I really didn’t see her coupled with Pitt because they were opposites. Brad does not come from the same kind of background.

Tina and RDJ were really funny, but I don’t think he was referring to Goop. He seems genuinely fond of her. He and his wife appear to be quite friendly with Goop. I remember reading that he was instrumental in getting Pepper a bigger storyline in the sequel.
Haven’t liked Goop ever since I saw that video of her risking her child’s life pulling out in front of that school bus on the scooter like she owned the road.
I IIke to think that Depp got an earful from Winona about the alleged script-stealing of Shakespeare in Love, and so thinks that la Gwyn is a weasel.

Of course, I don’t know the reason for the breakup between Johnny and Vanessa, but let’s remember, they had been together for a long time. They are both celebs, both travel and have their work commitments, and they have their children, so they’ve been through a lot together already. It’s not that surprising that a couple breaks up after years of being together. I’m not a Depp fan, but I really loved Vanessa and saw her as a good human being. However, people can go in different directions or become less interested in the relationship after some time. Now that he’s with another woman, he’s into her at the moment, but even this relationship will run its course in due time. I kind of doubt it will be as long and as committed as the one with Vanessa.

^This. Yeah I feel like Amber has stolen all his hotness. She is gorgeous but I agree that her “I’m an artist” business is ridiculous. I’m not completely sold on her story that she left Texas penniless with a gun either. She seems like a legend in her own mind which is why I find her just a little tedious. I liked Vanessa too and I hoped Johnny would be different, age gracefully, stay with his wife, get older and wiser with the times, stay a little apart from LA. Something happened on the set of Rum Diaries please-Amber is gorgeous, ambitious, intriguing, tropical locale and suddenly everyone breaks up and they’re together c’mon… But I also had hoped Johnny would not become a middle aged cliche dating a hot blonde piece half his age. So I guess my expectations were off there. I like Johnny so much as an actor and a presence. I’m secretly bummed he didn’t stay the devoted husband/cool dad/living in France out of the spotlight route. Also I think these things made him

Idk maybe it’s just this movie his doing but that slicked back hair and just no. I’ve seen so many pics of him and Amber together where he looks like a guido grandad or something. And midlife crises actual or perceived, are unbecoming.
So what does his hair have to do with the way he look? He looks hot and youthful in the pictures of him and Amber in London. All of this nonesense about his nonexistent midlife crisis needs to stop.

He’s an aging actor? So is 80% of the men who people here drool over. His long time wife? Lol, just goes to show how clueless you are because they didn’t actually get married and I think he’s entitled to date whoever he wants. His personal life/relationship shouldn’t matter so much to people who know nothing about him.
