Jennifer Lawrence in white Dior at the Globes: too bridal or nearly perfect?

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence won the Best Supporting Actor at last night’s Golden Globes for her role as a manic young trophy wife in American Hustle. She snuck up on Taylor Swift during a memorable red carpet moment (you can see a cute gif here). As far as fashion goes, JLaw seems a little bit over this Dior collaboration. Jennifer was wearing a dress from their couture line, and she sarcastically called it a “shocker” that she was wearing Dior at all.

The dress itself was lovely if slightly flawed. At first it looked a bit bridal, but the two luggage straps (?) saved the design from appearing too fancy. The dress was a bit too bunchy around the booty area and flattened out her girls on top. I was kind of in love with the skirt though. What do you think? In spite of a less than perfect dress, JLaw looks close to flawless. She’s killing that short hair. Her makeup is appropriately bold, and those dangling emerald earrings are just the right touch.

Here’s JLaw’s acceptance speech. She was very nervous, but I love that Nick Hoult looked so happy and supportive when she won.

Amber Heard

Amber Heard tried to pull off “the Leg” in navy blue Atelier Versace. LOL. I told you she wants to be the next Angelina Jolie! This is a gorgeous dress, but I think this dark blue would have looked better if Amber was still blonde. She would have brought the va-va-voom with that color combo. As it stands, Amber fades into the background with that mousy brown hair even with it all teased into oblivion. At least a pop of lip color would have helped.

Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie worked it in a white Gucci gown made of silk and crepe. The dress boasted embroidered crystals and emeralds, and the plunging neckline drew all eyes. Margot knows that this awards season is the time to make an impression so she doesn’t fade away as just another of Leo’s leading ladies. I think she pulls it off, don’t you? Margot’s makeup is gorgeous, and the the at-the-neck chignon is just right.

Jennifer’s dress was probably my 7th favourite dress of the night. I really liked it. I know some people (like Colton Haynes) were poking fun of it by wrapping a white comforter around them, but I thought it looked gorgeous on her without being too froo-froo.

However Margot’s dress was my second favourite of the night. Sexy and classy all the same time.

    • lisa says:

I thought it was an awful dress. She, in my opinion, did not look good at all. It was one of my least favorite looks, along with Julia Robert and Emma Watson.

      • wheezy says:

TOTALLY agree, I think she looked horrible from her dress to her awful make up and even the accessories sucked. I’m not a huge fan of hers in general but I know I’ve seen her look WAY better than this!

      • Decloo says:

She needs to get away from wearing white. She would look great in a bold jewel-tone.

      • Andrew1 says:

Even though I agree it wasn’t my favorite, I actually thought it was alright because of her personality. She didn’t seem stuff or all ‘stuck up’ while wearing it. Also, she’ll be the first to make jokes about it after her Dior contract is up…like I think she knows how silly some of it looks, but I think she’s a great trooper.

As for the win, I really wish Lupita would’ve won. BUT, I still think Jen’s win should be celebrated. I loved her in AH and thought her part was awesome, I just liked Lupita better is all. I think it’s a genre issue…two completely different movies with different tones and characters, so I can see why some people can be divisive about these two. I love BOTH of them and I hope one of them wins the oscar. If you didn’t like Jen, she’s st least not campaigning all over the place annoyingly and begging for the award…she’s just enjoying what comes to her and deserves to be recognized IMO…even though I reallllly want Lupita to win lol ๐Ÿ™‚

      • TSwise says:

Agreed. Jennifer Lawrence was the second worst dressed girl there (Lena worst).

It’s not bridal OR perfect. Just AWFUL.

      • ncmagnolia says:

I agree! She looked neither perfect or bridal. Just plain old boring.

      • TC says:

Yeah, I felt she could have done SO much better than this. But it’s still early. She’s got many more awards ceremonies to attend and a lot of dresses to wear. I’m guessing (hoping) her dress choices get progressively better.

    • I think jenn law looks perfect. Dress is gorge age approriate hair is darling! Make up and accessories to die for. Nice healthy role midtk for my 12 and 14 yr old girls. This chick is awesome.

  2. mellie says:

I’ve seen Jennifer Lawrence do better, but this was ok, her personality wins out over everything she would ever wear though. Amber Heard’s dress was pretty, but enough with the leg pose, yes, you have nice toned legs…we get it. Margot Robbie – gorgeous dress and she is so pretty!

    • momoftwo says:

Totally….Amber Heard is just meh…even when she presented there is nothing that special about her but if feels like really want to be

And Margot Robbie had a slit but didn’t keep sticking her leg out and looked amazing.

We get that it’s your leg underneath…you don’t have to stick it out to prove it to us!

      • Stef Leppard says:

        Amber Heard annoys me.

      • Holly says:

I can’t stand her at all. The slit was way too try hard, just like her. Can’t believe she was even a presenter – Depp certainly made that happen for her.

      • Liv says:

God, can Amber Heard please go away? She comes across so tacky and try hard! Johnny is such a cliche, can’t believe he’s with her after women like Vanessa Paradis or Winona Ryder, ugh!

    • harpreet says:

Really think the Dior contract she has does her no favours, although, if the pay is good, that is a win.

But it results in her having awful dresses for these events. She is not a fashion girl like Chalize and Marion, the other Dior girls. I mean yes she has a best actress Oscar, but Oscars cannot buy you style.

If anything, Jennifer Lawrence is a Calvin Klein girl. Her first Oscar dress was CK, and the minimalist look of CK works wonders for her.

      • K says:

Yeah, I completely agree. Didn’t she change into a simpler silver CK dress after the main Oscar ceremony last year, too, to attend the parties? She seems to see Dior as work, not her choice, and given how they don’t quite seem to know what to do with her, you can see why. CK is a much better fit, really.

      • Algernon says:

JLaw just has a lot going on, naturally. She’s tall, she has great boobs, she’s got big eyes and a big smile and apple cheeks. The fussier the dress gets, the worse she looks in it. That’s why CK’s minimalist style works so well on her. She’s a natural beauty and that lily don’t need much gilding. I feel the same way about Zoe Saldana. I usually end up feeling like “less is more” with her, too.

      • kimmy says:

yes. someone, please give jlaw some ck to wear. I just do not understand HOW a major fashion house like dior can’t dress her?! its been over a year now….you’d think they would figure out some things by now!

      • qwerty says:

I agree, this whole thing with Dior was a big mistake. Every time she looks like crap I know it’s Dior. And really, how many strapless dresses can you wear?

    • Pandy says:

I loved JLaw’s dress! Her make up was gorgeous too. I loved Margot Robbie’s dress as well. Amber Heard’s hair was only missing the grey streak or she would have looked like the Bride of Frankstein. Frankendepp? Why was she there again?

  3. Ice Maiden says:

I can’t think of a single good thing to say about this dress. It looks like a fluffy toilet seat.

Dior isn’t a good match for Jennifer anyway, but their dresses have been awful since the demise of John Galliano. Whatever one thinks of him as a person, he was/is a genius designer.

    • V4Real says:

J’s dress looks like someone just threw two elastic belts around a curtain or bed sheets. She has done better. I hope she knows just because she has a contract with Dior doesn’t mean that she has to wear Dior everytime she steps out ont he red carpet.

      • Ice Maiden says:

It doesn’t, but I bet that these contracts contain very specific clauses about certain events. For example, she might be contractually obliged to wear Dior on very high-profile events like the Oscars or GG, but on at least some other occasions she’s free to wear what she likes. Even so, and even with the lackluster Dior offerings we’re seeing these days, she could have done better than this ugly dress.

      • Liv says:

Hate the dress, too, super boring. Even I could style her better. It’s a shame that she keeps getting awful dresses. I mean look at Emma Watson or Marion Cotillard, it’s not like Dior couldn’t do it right.

    • elisa says:

LOL! That is exactly what the gown looked like – a fluffy toilet seat.

    • Reece says:

I was thinking more of toilet paper lightly papier-mached together and belted but your comparison works too!

    • littlestar says:

I agree, Galliano was an incredible designer and he and Dior meshed so well together. It’s too bad he as a person turned out to be questionable.

Am I the only person who dislikes Jennifer Lawrence’s short hair? I think it looks terrible on her – it really ages her and gives her that “mini van driving soccer mom” look.

And Amber Heard’s hair is frightening. I am in a bad mood this morning, so I will say this: I am glad she is fading away already from the spotlight.

      • Ice Maiden says:

Yup. Dior is so trendy now that people forget that when Galliano took over, they were considered a fuddy duddy old lady label that nobody cared about. If they keep up with this level of ‘design’, they’ll go back to that status pretty quickly, no matter how many Hollywood starlets they sign up.

And no, you’re not the only one to dislike Jennifer’s hair. I remember people nearly got eaten alive for saying this back in the long distant days when she was everyone’s darling, but I don’t think she’s particularly pretty. Great body yes, but her face is fairly average, and a short hairstyle like that needs a really great face to carry it off (think Charlize Theron or even Natalie Portman). Jennifer is attractive in a girl next doory way, but she’s not high fashion.

      • wheezy says:

I cannot stand that haircut! I don’t think she’s found the right hairstyles for herself. She needs something in between what she used to have and that drastic cut. Neither suit her face, I can kind of see her with a choppy bob? Plus its a “fun” cut, it’d go well with her personality & image.

  4. Zadie says:

Jennifer’s dress is awful, but her hair and makeup are very pretty. I saw AH and I don’t think she should have even been nominated, let alone win. She completely overacted. She reminded me of Penelope Cruz in Vicky Christina Barcelona ( the most undeserved Oscar ever).
Margot is so charming, but I don’t like her look.
Amber’s dress is amazing, the hair ruins it.

  5. Anna says:

Better than last year’s Oscars’ Dior but too similar to last year’s Oscars’ Dior. Quit Dior, JLAWR!

    • Marianne says:

shes their spokesperson. I think we will see a lot more Dior.

      • Anna says:

I know. But we shouldnt. Like, Emma Watson’s Dior was a hot mess, but at least it was a fun hot mess and Emma makes it work bc it’s a much better match. This just…isnt.

  6. Dani2 says:

This made me LOL – http://twitter.com/LanaDelRny/status/422550807595470848/photo/1

Honestly, the dress, I don’t understand the double strap thing, I think there HAD to have been something better for them to put her in.
And I thought the Taylor moment was cute and I love her relationship with Nick, so low-key but it’s so obvious how much they love and support each other.
I think Jen is probably going to win the Oscar too, even though I really want Lupita to win, first-time nominees seldom ever win.

    • reba says:

Ok thanks for that LanaDelRny lol, it was pretty funny but I want to say I LOVE JLaw in this dress. She is just beautiful anyway – I think she could make a black garbage bag look gorgeous (just add a couple of white straps?). Her accessories are pure perfection.

  7. Hannah says:

Jennifer Lawrence and Dior just don’t go together, IMO. She’d do better wearing something younger and more fun.

  8. D says:

Is Margot Robbie really only 23? She looks older.

    • Sullivan says:

To me, Margot looks like a confident, poised, gorgeously sexy woman in her early twenties.

    • nicegirl says:

      Love her green shoes!

    • wtf says:

Margot Robbie is Jaime Pressly 2.0

    • Lex says:

I don’t get why everything thinks she looks older…
You guys must be ruined by people like Selena Gomez or Miley Cyrus. Their baby faces are making perfectly normally faces look ‘old’

      • Mango says:

Uh, I don’t think it’s about other celebrities having “baby faces.” I’m 24 and this woman looks at least 10 years older than me or any of my friends. Of course, she may just have an older-looking face and is actually 23, you never know. Regardless she is very pretty.

  9. ray says:

from the neck up i loooooooove jennifer’s look. those straps look like theyre kinda pulling her dress down though, and it makes her boobs look weird. have you seen everyone making fun of it on instagram? its pretty funny.
also that first pic of amber herd scared the life outta me hahah

  10. Mandy says:

Ahhhh, JLaw. She can do no wrong. I will love her always and forever. Margot KILLED IT. She looked incredible. That dress was TO DIE FOR.

  11. Frida_K says:

I love Jennifer Lawrence. I saw both Hunger Games movies multiple times and the second one was a total sob-fest when Effie says goodbye. She has a permanent soft spot in my heart no matter what she wears just due to the HG movies.

Amber look deranged in the first photo and her dress is wrinkled across the front. Not attractive. She will never be Angelina, that’s for damned sure.

  12. Lydia says:

Jen’s Golden Globe statuette completes the outfit. Stay mad, everyone!

    • Dani2 says:

Some people here actually wanted her to win so that “stay mad, everyone” line was a fail.

    • eliza says:

Lol. Isn’t that the truth. I am not a JLaw fan but it really isn’t her fault she wins. The blame needs to be put on the people who vote not the people who win. At least JLaw seems like a nice person and that makes me not dislike her.

I wonder how mad people will be if she dares win any more awards?

  13. smee says:

Jennifer’s dress looks a little too similar to the dress she fell down in at the Oscars. Also, the fit of the bodice isn’t all that flattering. Her hair, make-up and jewelry saved it.

Amber Heard would have looked 100% better if she had well-styled blonde hair. Mousy brown ages her and makes her almost unrecognizable!

Margot Robbie looks like a red carpet pro – nice dress, great hair. Only problem for me – I thought she was Jaime Pressly when I first looked!

    • Sumodo1 says:

Me, too, smee! I wondered WTF is Jaime Pressly doing there–does she have a new show? I got excited for a second, because I think Jaime is national treasure (her gum-chewing!), and then, no. It’s some Brit.

  14. TG says:

    Loved J-Law’s dress and hair.

  15. Annabelle says:

Jen has no fashion sense so I don’t expect anything from her. Margot actually played a better trophy wife and Amber Heard thinks she is a bombshell like Margot but she is so desperate that I think she is some C list TV personality. Also her nose job is as obvious as Blake Liveley’s.

    • MisJes says:

Well, she’s dressed for events by a stylist (Rachel Zoe). So her own fashion sense is not really relevant. I think Jen’s day-to-day style is awesome.

  16. Kiddo says:

Margot Robbie was one of the best dressed, her hair and make-up were perfect too. I didn’t like Jennifer Lawrence’s dress. It reminded me of a hippy-ish gauzy beach cover-up.

  17. mar says:

    I hated Jennifers dress.

Amber is sooooooo boring and looks so much better as a blonde!!!!

Margot is STUNNING!!!! That face is amazing.

  18. Tapioca says:

Jennifer’s dress looks like someone’s wrapped her in a white tablecloth and secured it with electrical masking tape. Amber looks a bit tipsy. Margot looks like Jaime Pressley.

Not feeling any of them sorry!

  19. Tig says:

JLaw’s hair and make up were great- the dress was blah. I saw her in AH, and an award for that performance was just bogus. To me, she was the weakest link in the movie. So glad Amy Adams got some love.

Margot Robbie was one of my favorite looks of the night. And please post some info on Jessica Chastain. She was lovely, and that necklace!- shudder to think how much that is worth!!

  20. Livan says:

To be honest I think Jennifer’s dress is awful, and her make-up too ๐Ÿ™ She looks so old! And Amber Heard’s hair, yuck i do not even want to look at it! Margot looks good!

    • LeLe25 says:

I like her hair but hate her make up. It’s too dark and heavy for the vibe of the dress. Although the dress is awful too, so maybe she was trying to inject a little life into it..

I know I’m in the minority, but I just do not find J-Law to be photogenic. She always underwhelms me, but she’s kicking butt career wise, so she is doing something right!

  21. ToodySezHey says:

Amber heard is perfectly lovely, but her get-up was meh.

    Morgot Robbie looked great.

Jlaw…..that dress was…..not a good look. Not a disaster like Paula Patton or Julia Roberts but….should coulda done better.

  22. Lori says:

Jenn needs to get out of that Dior contract! Margo Robbie looked so good, especially when you compare it to her Vagina dress from the other nite’s premiere. Amber Heard is just a joke………Johnny Depp can’t buy her a career.

    • Chloe says:

“Johnny Depp can’t buy her a career” LOL I don’t thinks she realizes that she’s a part of his mid-life crisis.

  23. serena says:

Wow Margot is stunning! As for the other ladies.. well, I’m kind of starting to hate Amber Heard, she piss me off for some reason. JLaw.. I hate this dress, it’s a bridal kind of sack.. ugh! Also, she is beautiful so why does nobody knows how to do her make-up? Because that is not ‘bold’ it’s tragic! At least she’s working really good that pixie cut, way to go!

  24. The Original G says:

I didn’t like JLaw’s dress, but she still looked great, right? She looked fresh and relaxed and like an actress, not a clothes horse, which is the career she has/wants anyway.

    • Andrew1 says:

Exactly! She’s not like some of these other chicks who went way too glammed up in order to try to be noticed to make up for their nothingness *cough* Amber Heard *cough*. Seriously though, she doesn’t look stiff and doesn’t seemed worried about what people think of her while she’s wearing something…she’s just relaxed and does her thing.

  25. Esmom says:

I don’t get the hate for Jennifer’s dress. I think it’s kinda cool and minimalist with just enough of an added twist to keep it from being bridal. And it really flatters her figure. She looked great and I thought her speech was cute and funny (when she said “I saw saw all the other nominee’s movies but not really…”).

  26. j.eyre says:

I do love that deep blue dress but I agree, it just doesn’t quite seem as dramatic on her. I barely noticed her last night.

  27. didilucy says:

I loved it and I love her haircut

  28. Nicolette says:

I like JLaw’s dress, and it reminds me a bit of a dress SJP wore in her bridal photo shoot in the first SATC film. Amber’s dress I would have loved if the slit wasn’t so high, it makes it look tacky. As for Margot, she is my pick for best dressed of the night. FINALLY! Someone with a beautiful dress, perfect hair and makeup. Love it. Elegant, and glamorous the way a celeb should look on awards night.

  29. Leah says:

Don’t really like Jlaws dress, Dior always give her dresses that looks like the top of a wedding cake. Margot Robbie looks good. Why was Amber Heard there? Apart from the flop movie with Liam Hemsworth she hadn’t any movies out and certainly not a contender in the awards season.

    • Marianne says:

I cant remember if she presented or not. I know Johnny Depp did. Maybe she was there because of that,

    • silly says:

She actually had 4 movies out last year and one tanked more brutally at the box office than the other. Makes you wonder why she was there as a presenter. Guess Depp had to put his own appearance on top to make the HFPA take her as well.

  30. Kristen says:

I guess I’m the only person who thought Amber Heard looked gorgeous. I’m not even a fan of her really, but I thought she was stunning.

  31. tifzlan says:

J Law looks great from the neck up. Undeserved win though.

  32. Dani says:

I didn’t like anything about Jennifer’s get up. Especially the makeup. The red is too dark in contrast with her hair and dress color, and her eye makeup is way too dark for her lip color. The earrings don’t really have much to do with anything. She should have done minimal earrings, light eyes and a bold lip. Don’t care about the dress, too similar to last years and nothing wow about it.

Margot Robbie is flawless. But she’s definitely not 23.

    • BackstageBitchy says:

Dani, you are a genius. I wrote almost the exact same critique before I read yours. Agree 100%.
And yes, Margot said herself she’s from a teeeeny town that is very supportive of her. Easy to fudge a birth year and get a yearbook to go “missing” from the library under those circumstances! She’s got some of the prettiest skin I’ve ever seen, but idont think she’s 23, and she really does look remarkably like Jaime Pressly.

  33. Zigggy says:

I keep thinking Margot is Jaime Pressley.
Liked Jennifer’s hair & makeup, but not really the dress.
I’m not sure why Amber was there. She looks pretty good but I’m firmly team Vanessa ๐Ÿ˜‰

  34. vanessa says:

Love Jennifer’s make up and jewels, but she didn’t seem comfortable in that dress. She was tugging at it during her speech and I don’t blame her because it looked like it needed a good tugging. Strapless dresses are not for everyone.

  35. OhDear says:

Jennifer Lawrence’s dress is ok, don’t like the second strap, though.

Amber Heard is trying far to hard to look sexy in the first picture of her. It’s to the point where it gives me second hand embarrassment. And she’s not a bad looking woman!

  36. Annie says:

This light brown/dirty blonde shade really isn’t working for Amber. She has the type of face that goes with being either a definite blonde or definite brunette.

Also she has botox “bunny lines”. Such a stiff smile.

  37. lunchcoma says:

It’s less ugly than some of her other Dior dresses have been, but she’s already done the bridal look and done it much better. This seems uninspired.

  38. Janet says:

Lawrence is suffering from a serious case of overexposure. I’m sick and tired of her already.

That said, great hair and makup; dreadful dress.

  39. emmie_a says:

I didn’t hate Jennifer’s dress but it looked like a snowman to me. Like I want to put button eyes and a carrot nose to complete the look. Besides that, it looks good on her. Not too many people would look good w/all that material bunched up around thier hips. I think her hair & makeup looked great.

  40. I Choose Me says:

Do not like Jennifer’s dress at all but her makeup is flawless (love that shade of lipstick) and the hair is just right.

Amber is meh but Leo’s co-star is holding her own.

  41. Aly says:

I like Jennifer, but I think she looked terrible last night. The dress was hideous. Like a comforter wrapped in black tape. The fact that she still has that awful haircut doesn’t help. Very pretty girl, but she didn’t do anything for me last night.

Ps. Yea, colton Haynes NAILED IT on twitter!! Lmao!

  42. Jayna says:

Get rid of the blonde hair. You’re just another actress with it. The dress, nothing about it strikes me. Maybe it’s better in person and doesn’t translate in photos. I don’t know why she picked it.

  43. dontbuyit says:

Jen, liked the dress, love her hair and makeup, I just don’t like her. Margot Robbie is head to toe stunning. Amber, meh.

  44. MavenTheFirst says:

The dress looked unfinished and unbalanced, as if they got to the top of the bodice and just hacked off material straight across. I did like the simplicity of it, just not on someone with a figure like hers.

  45. hannah says:

That’s not a dress , it’s a bed sheet held together by duct tape.

  46. Brianna says:

Amber looks coked out of her head, haha

  47. taxi says:

Does Amber have veneers? They’re too big.

  48. MisJes says:

Although Jennifer’s gown was not my favourite, I have to say the accessories/hair/make-up were FLAWLESS. I loved the bracelet stack and earrings, and the darker lip looked great with her edgier hair.

Overall, she looked relaxed, comfortable and seemed to be having a good time – I enjoyed her on the carpet. And I am so happy for her win! She was incredible in AH, I really want her to sweep this season.

  49. whocares? says:

she is wonderful so who cares?

  50. xoxokaligrl says:

JLaw is much to young and pretty for that dress. The makeup and dress do not play up her hair. It is just okay…..

  51. BackstageBitchy says:

Jennifer Lawrence- stuck in a Dior contract that does her NO favors, except I presume cold hard cash. Dress is bunchy and blah, makeup is all wrong- you don’t do purplish heavy eyeshadow and then a clashing-tone hard brownish-red lip, BOTH of which clash with the green earrings. And while her hair is less tragic than before, it still makes a young fresh girl look like Kate Gosslin. Just a big fail all around.

  52. Kosmos says:

I vote for Margot Robbie’s look!! She came off as very confident and her look just comes together for me more than the others. When Amber came onto stage, she seemed strange…was she trying to be sexy? I wasn’t sure, but her dress is certainly beautiful. Sorry, while I love Jennifer Lawrence, I didn’t love the dress :- ( Not a fan of that look, I guess. I loved her short hair when she first cut it, but the way it is swept over in this shot, not so much…..I’d still like to see it pulled back into another look, but she can wear the shorter hair very well.

  53. Alina says:

no word about Jennifer “it should be illegal to call someone fat” Lawrence fat shaming Christian Bale?

  54. GIRLFACE says:

JLaws makeup with those earrings is perfection. Yes! Exactly! I couldn’t figure out why Amber rubbed me the wrong way. It’s totally her try hardness.
