Anne Hathaway & stylist Rachel Zoe broke up after ten years together

This ^^ is a photo from January 26th. Anne Hathaway and her husband Adam Shulman went to the Beverly Hills Farmers Market, and they ran into a black-sack-clad Rachel Zoe. Rachel showed Annie something on her phone – probably a photo of new baby Kaius – and Anne reacts appropriately. That was less than a week ago. And yesterday, sources confirmed Anne and Rachel are no longer working together. Anne was one of Rachel’s most famous celebrity clients, and Rachel did right by Anne on the red carpet more times than she did Anne wrong. Rachel famously did all of Anne’s costume changes when poor Anne co-hosted the Oscars too, which was probably the grandest collaboration between celebrity and stylist in the past decade. But something changed.

When Anne Hathaway showed up at Sundance last week looking perfectly chic and understated, we started to wonder if she was taking her usually girly style in a new and more sophisticated direction, flavored with structured menswear influences. An oversize cream Max Mara coat with an ASOS scarf was her outerwear of choice for arrival at the Salt Lake City airport. For a Harvey Weinstein football watching party at the film fest, she wore tattered jeans and an oversize funky graphic print Givenchy sweatshirt. Then there was a slouchy hunter green pantsuit paired with a black J Brand camisole.

All of those looks were for her promotional appearances on behalf of the new indie Song One. Another ensemble, which she wore to do interviews in the THR Sundance suite with Facebook and American Airlines, was a Nonoo quilted oversize sweater over a cotton pima tunic from pre-fall, all over skinny black leather pants. During the day, she accessorized with a two-tone Marni Trunk bag and Carrera by Jimmy Choo leopard-print shades.

From whence came the funkier side of Ms. Hathaway, we had to ask. Sources in the know tell THR that veteran stylist Penny Lovell, who also works with Rose Byrne, Taylor Schilling, Bella Heathcote and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, has been quietly pulling pieces from showrooms for Hathaway. Sundance reportedly was the duo’s first time out the gate together — meaning that the Oscar-winning actress has called off her long-term relationship with celebrity stylist-turned-designer Rachel Zoe (whose current clients include Jennifer Lawrence, Sofia Vergara, Jennifer Garner and Isla Fisher).

Lovell is best known for having a knack for taking smart risks, like Byrne’s groundbreaking white Elie Saab jumpsuit on the SAG Awards red carpet, leading the way for jumpsuits as eveningwear. We hope this means something new and exciting for Oscars, where Hathaway will present on the heels of her win last year for Les Miserables. If you recall, the normally impeccably dressed Hathaway showed up at the last minute in a pale pink satin Prada dress with unfortunately placed darts that became the most tweeted moment on the Oscar 2013 red carpet.

Hathaway worked with Zoe for roughly a decade.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

Yes, I’ve got to wonder if the Oscar dress debacle from last year wasn’t the beginning of the end. Even though – it’s worth noting – it wasn’t really Rachel Zoe’s fault. Rachel had organized an original, one-of-a-kind Valentino gown for Anne’s Oscar walk, but then Anne saw Amanda Seyfried’s Alexander McQueen gown the day before the Oscars, and Anne freaked out about the similarities between the two dresses. Reportedly, Anne was a disaster of indecision on the day of the Oscars, and Rachel ended up finding her the pale pink Prada disaster which made everything think Anne’s nips were at full salute all night (it was a darting issue).

Since then, Anne hasn’t done many red carpets, so she and Rachel probably haven’t worked together much since the Oscars. It’s sad that Anne blames that disaster on Rachel, but maybe we don’t know the whole story. It’s also possible Rachel didn’t devote as much time to Anne as usual, although Rachel has been losing high-profile clients in a steady stream for the past two years. I think Zoe’s more high-profile client these days is Jennifer Garner? Is that right? I’m pretty sure Cameron Diaz left a while ago, and I remember hearing that Jennifer Lawrence is working with someone else now too.

    Awkward.

Rachel Zoe is also extremely expensive. Now that Anne’s no longer a star on the rise (though people may not always love her, she is very established) it makes me wonder if her styling priorities have changed. A lot of Zoe’s highest profile clients have moved to other stylists, including Diaz and Hudson, and I would imagine that its because Zoe charges an astronomical amount, but her focus is now divided among her various other business endeavors.

I was looking at some old pictures of Anne Hathaway recently (I think on the Fug Girls website) and I’ve come to the conclusion that she was much more likable when she had long hair. She looks fine with the short, but the long hair made her seem more accessible.

  4. Talie says:

I think Jennifer is still with her — the way she was styled at the Globes was very Rachel.

  5. doutzen says:

Pretending to think someone else’s kid is the cutest thing ever is one of my least favorite things ever.

    • Zadie says:

Why? I find most babies the cutest thing ever, so I would probably react the same.

      • doutzen says:

Every baby can’t be the cutest baby ever. Being shown pictures of a baby and getting the ‘ is he/she the cutest baby you have ever seen’. Um no. It’s even more awkward when the baby is unfortunate looking.

    • pamspam says:

I have a close friend with an unfortunate looking baby. I can only reply to texted pics with “Awwww!” and “Cute!” but the poor dear looks like a creepy old tobacco chewing tractor driving farmer or maybe a young Cal Worthington (may he RIP).

And before you brand me horrible, just know that I’ve shown the pictures to MANY of my super nicey-nice baby loving friends and the reaction, across the board, has been “oh, my…”

    • fruitloops says:

Not all babies are beautiful, but I think it’s polite and/or nice to say to any baby’s parents that their baby is the cutest thing ever. There is no harm in that.

    • Kath says:

My reaction is usually “yep, it’s a baby” before changing the subject.

  6. Mrs. Darcy says:

Hm. Is Demi still with her? Liv? I find it hard to believe it’s a money issue, if they could afford her this long. She has always dressed Hathaway as a pretty princess, but I find it hard to believe if Anne hadn’t just said to her “Fetch me an Armani suit, stat!” Rachel wouldn’t have done so. Is there still a Zoe project t.v. show? I stopped watching not long after Brad left. It did kind of always amaze me that she pulled together things so consistently last minute and it always seemed on the verge of disaster, but I guess that is how red carpet loan styling works?…I kind of want to go watch that ep now where Rachel raids her amazeballs jewellery closet for charity.

    • Bridget says:

RZ charges the most in the business – Nicole Richie’s famous makeover way back when was estimated to be a $250,000 investment, and that’s not even factoring Zoe’s much higher rates. Its one thing if studios pick up the tab (as with Zoe Saldana’s Star Trek publicity wardrobe) but another entirely if its on the celeb’s own dime. Plus I habe a suspicion that RZ doesn’t have enough time to devote to the clients to justify the price.

      • Mrs. Darcy says:

I don’t see how she can charge all of her clients that amount, many of them were with her when they were just starting out, Anne, Kate Hudson, etc, theres is no way they started out paying that much. Not saying she’s not super expensive, just that there must be some variation if she is willing to work with up and comers (well she used to be, no idea how much time she spends styling now w/her clothing line and other stuff). She is probably not as attentive as she once was now that she has kids too I would imagine.

  7. Anna says:

Nooooo!!! I love them together. I really love watching Anne on the red carpet. She has had some misses recently but she almost always kills it. I hope she finds a suitable replacement.

Maybe Rachel is busy with her clothing line and kids and finds it hard to devote as much time to styling celebs?

  8. HappyMom says:

Rose Byrne always looks awful-she’s not exactly a ringing endorsement for whoever is styling her.

    • emmie_a says:

For the most part, I agree… But I did like the jumpsuit she wore a few years ago that everyone hated. A lot of time she looks like if you touch her she’ll break into pieces – like super fragile.

    • kibbles says:

I agree, Rose Byrne almost always looks bad on the red carpet.

  9. dizzylucy says:

I’m sure the Oscar mess contributed to it. I still think she just should have worn the original one. Lots of dresses on the red carpet are similar.
Rachel did do a good job for her leading up to that – her Armani? dress from a few years ago is my favorite red carpet dress ever, and her dresses when she hosted were pretty great too.

  10. emmie_a says:

Anne’s Sundance wardrobe for the week was probably worth more money than my entire wardrobe — but I saw some pictures of her and she didn’t look any better than people I see walking down the street. I just don’t equate her with fashion at all.

  11. Zadie says:

How big is that coffee? I don’t think you can even get them that big around here.

  12. Belle Epoch says:

What happened to all the Rachel hating a few years ago? People said she gave her clients drugs to make them skinny, she was self-centered, etc. Is she actually a good stylist and an OK person? Never watched her show.

    • Jayna says:

She’s very self-absorbed, but I think beyond excellent at what she does and has a great eye for fashion and what works and attention to detail. And she is truly very passionate about clothes and fashion and designers and you felt that. That is what was infectious about her show. Her grating personality was still there, though. I actually loved her husband on the show.

The last two seasons when she moved more into designing her own label and expanding her brand businesswise and less about styling celebs it got boring.

  13. vangroovey says:

What is the deal with her husband? Have we ever heard him speak? Why does it seems like he’s always walking three steps behind her — like a reverse Windsor thing? I don’t know, there is something that pings my “something’s off” radar about these two.

    • FLORC says:

      You mean Anne’s husband?
There are rumors she’s his beard. And that she just got very tired of dating and feeling pressured to settle down (especially for Oscar campaigns). This works out well for both of them.

  14. Jayna says:

I can’t imagine any actress stays with the same stylist forever. It’s like saying you stay with the same hair stylist forever. People like to change it up, have a different artistic eye. Otherwise, it can get samey. Plus, she became very involved in her own line and brand and I think wasn’t as accessible to her clients.

  15. FLORC says:

Anne ordered a full salad at dinner and Rachel knew it just wasn’t going to work anymore.

  16. Kali says:

‘Twas the nips that tore them tragically apart…

  17. annaloo. says:

I think in shuttling more high profile clients, that she may have just wanted to trade in the time consuming, high drama actresses, for something else that is just as time consuming and high drama, but much more gratifying: kids. She has incorporated herself into other businesses.. she probably doesn’t need to work in the capacity of a personal stylist to the stars, I would imagine that is a very consuming gig.

  18. Ladies of Lavender says:

I used to watch Rachel’s show. I honestly liked her. She is ( imo) prob one of the best stylists going. If she charges alot, its because she is worth it. That woman puts a huge effort into getting every last detail right.
