Cate Blanchett in Proenza Schouler at the ‘Monuments Men’ premiere: not cute?

wenn21052271

Here are some photos from last night’s NYC premiere of The Monuments Men. I’m not sure why today is so Monuments Men-intensive (we’ve already had posts about Matt Damon and George Clooney), but I guess it’s because this is the biggest film opening this week… unless you count The Vampire Academy, and… um…?

Anyway, I was hoping that Cate Blanchett would be the red carpet star of this unmitigated sausage party, but not so much. I tend to think Cate is having a really awful week – her Oscar campaign got hijacked by the Farrow family and Cate’s friend Phillip Seymour Hoffman passed away, and she spent some time with Hoffman’s widow/partner and children on Monday. That’s what her Proenza Schouler Pre-Fall 2014 dress says to me – it says grief, sadness, don’t-look-at-me. Obviously, I really dislike the dress. The styling sucks too (her hair!!). It’s like she didn’t even feel like trying.

I’m also including photos of Clooney, Damon (with his wife Luciana), Bill Murray (who wins the red carpet for that ensemble), John Goodman, Hugh Bonneville (Lord Grantham!) and of course, Jean Dujardin. Who would you rather? I would want to have dinner with Bill Murray, but I would go home with Dujardin.

Ladies and gentlemen, I do believe we are in the presence of that rarity: A fashion miss from La Blanchett.

    • Eleonor says:

      correction: a fashion mess. 🙂

    • paola says:

I think it might be a fail on purpose. Maybe she’s trying to be undertone and demure after the death of PSH and Dylan Farrow’s bomb.

      • Ice Maiden says:

        @Paola

I also suspect that she was deliberately going for a low-key look, but you can be low-key and still look great. This is ugly.

      • Sullivan says:

        I agree.

      • paola says:

        @Ice Maiden
I’m not sure.. maybe going the ugly route is saving her from some backlash. If you’re sad and ugly dressed no one can dig at you saying your shallow wanting to still look beautiful. I think Cate knows very well what looks good on her, even on mourning days. I believe it was intentional. she looks sad in the face too.. so maybe she didn’t want to feel beautiful for one day but just sad.

      • Kat says:

+1 Yep. Agreed. It’s definitely a “don’t notice me” look.

      • The Wizz says:

Seems like a grieving dress to me.

    • MacScore says:

Well said, Ice Maiden, well said!
I thought the outfit couldn’t get any worse, and then in the following pic a gust of wind seems to have blown, revealing that the “skirt” has a big slit in the middle which, when separated, makes it look like a pair of gauchos (sp?) from the 1970s. Hideous indeed.

    • mia girl says:

Don’t throw things at me folks (because I really like Blanchett’s style) but I actually think thus far, this award season has been a bit of an overall fashion miss for her.

      • Mean Hannah says:

Totally agree. Cate almost always good – and still takes plenty of risks – but this award season’s looks have not been her best. She’s already had some duds and worse – terribly boring outfits.

  2. MsGoblin says:

Wow, she looks like a schoolmarm about to ring the bell for the kids to come in from recess.

    No likey.

  3. eliza says:

    Hideous.

  4. Mia says:

She definitely looks like she’s in mourning and is only there because its an obligation she made.

    • HappyMom says:

      This exactly.

    • Charlotte says:

Yes, she looks very sad. I remenbered seeing in other site photos of her with very teary eyes after she visited Philip Seymour Hoffman family and also a video of her looking somber at the airport. So I don’t she was in very good spirits this week.

    • Becky1 says:

Yes. She’s a professional so she went but I’m sure she really did not want to be there. I would bet the last thing she’s worried about right now is fashion. Honestly, I know this is a gossip site but something feels off about commenting on her outfit right after she unexpectedly lost a good friend.

  5. Lila says:

She just looks really sad in general. I think that is what is missing from this look. Normally she can work anything because she’s Cate but here, her light and attitude are gone. She just looks sad.

It’s George for me, always and forever. Has anyone seen the Vanity Fair clip of George with Julia Roberts where he calls out Gwyneth Paltrow? He’s hot, smart, talented and charming and that is really all I require from a pretend boyfriend. Jean Dujardin is a close second though. He didn’t really appeal to me during his Oscar campaign but damn he’s hot now.

    • TG says:

DuJardin has the added benefit of being a native French speaker so I think that would be super sexy to have some hot guy murmuring in French to me in bed. Even if he was a cheater. lol

  6. Miss M says:

I dont think she needs to try anything, especially at this moment while she is mourning a loss of a dear friend.

ps: Wasn’t PSH originally cast for this movie, then he backed down and later said he was going to rehab?

  7. Abbicci says:

Bill Murray and John Goodman should be in everything. As much as I love Matt D ( the hometown boy made good) I am going to see Monuments Men for Murray and Goodman.

    • Sullivan says:

Yes! Murray and Goodman in the same movie? I’m there.

    • Hautie says:

Murray and Goodman are who I would want to have dinner with… and listen to them bullshit all night.

Guys like them, tend to be the ones with amazing story telling abilities. Both been working since the 1970’s. So you know they know allll the good gossip!

  8. AlmondJoy says:

It’s very rare that I think she looks nice… she’s a pretty lady but I never understood the big fuss about her style. She bores me.

  9. aquarius64 says:

I wonder if a gag order was put on the press regarding Woody Allen? No questions about it.

  10. davidbowie says:

I like the skirt but the top is too severe. She looks so sad. 🙁

  11. mj says:

Not ‘cute’? Uh yeah. Obviously she wasn’t cuting it up on the carpet. She never does cute. She did an understated version of what she usually does because, as stated, she’s having a bad week. Maybe I’m projecting here but I think Kate of any celebrity feels remorse regarding her relationship with Allen and, frankly, has been hit by a ton of bricks this week.

  12. shitler says:

I’m sure she couldn’t care less about making best dressed lists right now

  13. TheOriginalKitten says:

She looks like a member of the FLDS.
    Fail.

  14. Tig says:

I can’t think of who this frock would look good on, but I give her credit for honoring her co-actors by showing up to support their movie. It couldn’t have been easy.

  15. smee says:

Yes, CB seems a bit off. The neckline and strange white trim at the bottom of that long, droopy peplum, not good.

But BILL MURRAY is dressed so well! I love the color combos and mix of textures!! I wonder if someone dresses him or if he pulls it together himself?

  16. shellybean says:

Horrible dress. Why would anyone even make this dress?

  17. Blannie says:

I love Jean DuJardin’s teeth because they look like REAL teeth, not the artificial blindingly white horse choppers that every other Hollywood star has. I love his little pointed canines. I know, I’m weird. I’d take him and Bill Murray and John Goodman. He could murmer French nothings in my ear and John and Bill would keep me laughing and enjoy some good food with me afterwards. 🙂

    • Sullivan says:

Yes! In a land where everyone has perfectly straight, blue-white teeth, it’s refreshing to see Dujardin’s wonderfully imperfect smile.

  18. Kristen says:

I love John Goodman an unhealthy amount. He’s my favorite.

    • CG says:

I’ve loved John Goodman ever since his Roseanne days! I would have dinner/hang out with him, but I would let Dujardin do staggeringly filthy things to me. 😉

  19. phaedra says:

Maybe I’m a horrible person for saying this, but I don’t really care anymore about Cate after her comment about Dylan Farrow.

    • Sue says:

      +1
No timing is good timing for a sex abuse survivor to speak out. Now we get to hear that Farrow “hijacked” Cate’s Oscar chances. Pffft.

    • KB says:

She didn’t make a comment about Dylan Farrow, she just said she hoped they’d find peace. Why are people so bothered by her not jumping feet first into that whole mess? If the kids can’t reach a consensus, and the judge couldn’t reach an opinion, why should Cate have to? May I remind you that Dylan had never spoken publicly until November of last year, after the movie had already come out? Everyone wants to jump on her for working with Woody Allen, but how do you know whether or not Dylan’s open letter would’ve changed her mind? You don’t.

      • Violet says:

I completely agree with you. Blanchett has nothing do with it, I don’t know why some are blaming her for that.

  20. Aria says:

That dress is doing her no favor and it take a huge deal to make Cate ugly!
I was thinking about her current Oscar chances: Kirsten Dunst Melancholia performance was completely snubbed after Lars von Trier nazi comments. But it seems Hollywood has a soft spot for abusers like Roman Polanski so she might win after all.

  21. Patty says:

I think Cate is probably sad because of PSH. She is going to win this year, as she should.

  22. maynot says:

I am sure my Grandma had something very similar in her closet. She would be 100 years old this year.

  23. Charlotte says:

I actually like the dress for I love this collection from Proenza Schouler and the shoes are pretty cool (the detail in the back is lovely). I think her face looks very beautiful as always but what is missing is her charisma and it is understandable as for the circumstances.

  24. MorganaleFey says:

I have been loving her style this award season the most (she is the only one interesting so far for me, the others seemed generic) and I think she looks fine, not awful as many say. The close ups of the dress are gorgeous (the details are exquisite) but overall she looks very tired. I hope she feels better for the Berlin Film Festival Premiere and delivers as usual.

  25. Violet says:

She looks very pretty face wise and I like how she styled her hair. Now the dress seems interesting and though it is not the best thing she has worn this year but it’s not bad either. She does look uncomfortable and jaded, not excited at all like most of the times she is in a red carpet.

  26. Evi says:

Blanchett is a repeat offender. Joan Collins – at 80 – dresses better than Cate.
    The dress is hideous.
Has anyone seen Mrs Brown’s boys? Well that dress looks like it was stolen from Mrs Brown’s wardrobe.
