Gwyneth Paltrow’s skincare: ‘I used to just wash my face with a wash cloth & water’

FFN_Paltrow_Gwymeth_PABLO_EXC_011714_51307635

Us Weekly has the funkiest story about Gwyneth Paltrow this week. They claim that Gwyneth “volunteered” to sing a duet with Chris Martin at a recent fundraiser for their kids’ school in LA. Not only that, but Gwyneth volunteered to sing “Cruisin’,” that song she did with Huey Lewis in Duets. Random, right? Do you even believe that? If you’re going to have Goop and Chris sing at a kids’ fundraiser, why not a Coldplay song? Or why not a song that… I don’t know, people would actually like to hear?

Anyway, I’m starting to worry a little bit about Dame Gwyneth. I’m worried that she might be poor. Not “poor” like a peasant (how gauche), but “poor” in the way rich people are poor, as in overextended on too many real estate and business ventures. She has a mansion in London (poor thing has been renovating it constantly!), she’s got a NYC apartment and a mansion in the Hamptons, a mansion in LA and word is that she and Chris just bought a little beach-front property in Malibu. So, no wonder Chris Martin took a gig with The Voice and no wonder Gwyneth is taking any modeling gig she can find. Which is why she’s the face of Restorsea, the fish-placenta skincare line. And that’s why she’s hustling like her life depends on it – Goop has to pay for all of that real estate.

We like to think of Gwyneth Paltrow as our own personal lifestyle guru. From her bold crop top-wearing skills to her crazy cleanses to those GOOP newsletters (yes, we subscribe!), the actress is everywhere (including in our head as we get ready). So it’s no surprise Restorsea tapped Paltrow as the new face of their skincare line. (After all, she did nab PEOPLE’s World’s Most Beautiful woman title.)

What are her secrets to a flawless complexion? “I try to always cleanse my skin and moisturize at night. I’ve gotten a lot better at it,” she tells PEOPLE. “I used to just wash my face with a wash cloth and water. But now I’m 41, so I need to be a girl and deal with products and put them on and stuff. I still think a hot wash cloth is a really good exfoliator, and I still use it. But I put a cleanser on first. Exfoliation is super important. A hot wash cloth and good scrub.”

Paltrow said she made sure to try out Restorsea’s products for six weeks before committing to the brand. “Because of my website, I get sent things all the time, so I don’t necessarily get very excited about many things. I really loved how this smelled and felt,” she says. “So that’s what drew me to keep using it. Then I saw a real change in my skin. When they approached me, I thought this was fantastic.”

And while the busy mom of two is now a devotee to a real skincare regimen, she maintains that her top beauty tip is making sure to exercise: “If you have a good sweat everyday it’s so detoxifying and good for your skin tone.”

When it comes to her makeup mantra, Paltrow’s all about a pretty basic palette and always has Max Factor mascara (“It works better than really expensive ones”) on hand. One beauty trend she’s not a fan of: the return of brown lipstick. “I think as you grow into yourself you know what works for you. So you don’t really follow trends like you do when you’re 20. Brown lipstick, I don’t think I’ll be bringing that back.”

The ’90s will be making a comeback in the Paltrow household via her overalls collection. “I love overalls. I never stopped wearing overalls,” she said. Another warm-weather wardrobe staple? “I’m excited to just wear sandals. I’m not a wedge person, I’m sort of into ‘Man Repeller’ shoes at the moment. Ugly-chic sandals for summer.”

[From People]

First of all, I don’t want to hear what Gwyneth has to say about skincare. As I said yesterday, Goop’s skin isn’t all that covetable. Now, if this was Kerry Washington? I would be all over hearing what she had to say about skincare. Now, that being said, am I the only one who thought this was gross? “I used to just wash my face with a wash cloth and water.” RLY? She’s rich and she’s always had access to the best skincare ever and all she could manage to do was wash her face with water and a washcloth? Also: “But now I’m 41, so I need to be a girl and deal with products and put them on and stuff.” Dame Goop deigns to take care of her skin, but only in her 40s.

    a girl? she’s 41, safe to say she’s a woman now

    • MCraw says:

Yeah, I think I know what she means tho. She’s only now getting into all that girly stuff, since her approach has always seemed more laid back in her down time.

Hey, what’s gross about washing your face w a steamed cloth? It’s frikkin awesome, especially when you put a couple of drops of Dr. Bronner’s mint soap. Scrubbing with warm water is all anyone really needs to be clean. All that other stuff is extra for added scent, but not doing much more as far as actual cleaning goes.

      • FLORC says:

Steam cloth and warm water is the best! Or just lay that cloth on your face (to open up pores) and then use your favorite natural skin product. You really can’t go wrong with that method on any type of skin. The basics are all there.
        1. Open Pores
        2. Clean Pores.
        3. Wipe/Rinse Pores Clean
        4. Pat Dry
        5. Drink lots of water every day.
It’s really not complicated and you don’t need all these expensive products.

      • Irishserra says:

If she’s wearing makeup at all, I think a little more is needed than just water. I’m also a fan of Dr. Bronner’s peppermint. I mix a little with baking soda and clean and exfoliate that way. I’m old enough now that oil does not bother my skin, so after my face is clean and pat dry, I use a little raw coconut oil. I’m happy with my skin, and it looks better than Goopy’s and I’m only 2 years younger than she is.

      • MCraw says:

Ooh, Irishserra! I never mixed it with baking soda, I’ll definitely have to try that, thanks!

Florc, I love having a hot rag on my face and with the mint soap on it, breathing in…aaahhhh so relaxing, and prickly on the skin lol. My husband got me on that 🙂

      • LilyT says:

@MCRAW I’d love to try this mint soap! I’ve been looking for a good soothing cleanser. Can you find it in drug stores or?

      • MCraw says:

@LilyT yeah, Dr. Bronner’s is an all natural soap in most drug stores like CVS. Blue label with lots of white text. I love reading that label lol

    • idk says:

She didn’t say at what age she was using just a wash cloth and water. I bet it was probably at age 7.

  2. Eleonor says:

If Jennifer Aniston can sell hair product, she can sell skincare products.

    • Tatjana says:

Goop is one of the rare celebrity women who actually goes out without makeup so we know how her skin looks like. And it looks good for 41. Kerry is younger, isn’t she?

I washed my face with soap and water because I couldn’t be arsed to use a bunch of products. But my mum made me change that ( I’m 21 so mum can still “make me” do things 😀 )

    • Becky1 says:

I’m not a fan of Gwyneth’s by any means but I think people are overly critical of her skin. She’s 41 not 21. I’ve never met a 41 year old Caucasian without any expression lines. She looks fine to me.

  3. lisa2 says:

    I love that Black/White bag..

What was she using before. I mean she said she was sent the product tired it for 6 weeks. They must have asked her for something or brought her some marketing deal. She is invested in the company I believe.

    • ~Z~ says:

That bag looks like it’s sick of her crap! Sticking it’s tongue out.

      • lovegossipbutnotL&E says:

LMFAO @ ~Z~’s comment! Went back and looked, it totally is sticking it out!!! Don’t blame it at all, I think I will start doing the same every time I see pictures of her from now on! 😉

      • MaiGirl says:

Hahaha! It totally looks like it’s going “Goop? Ptooey!”

  4. Laura says:

    She’s no girl.

I have to give it to her or her PR team – she’s very plain looking, not particularly charismatic, doesn’t have an aspirational or unique style really and doesn’t seem particularly interested in beauty. She’s hustled this solely on the basis of Goop and her know it all persona – they must see that if she’s so confident in what she’s pushing others will buy.

    • booboolarue says:

      and let’s add, can’t act for sh*t…

      • I second you! I’m a huge Jane Austen fan, and I tried to watch Emma. I turned it off after the first minute. And I’m STILL pissed she won an Oscar for Shakespeare in Love….WHATEVER.

    • MaiGirl says:

Really, we also have to thank her genetic team. She owes a hell of a lot of her career to good old-fashioned nepotism.

  5. ldub says:

i use a clean washcloth and hot water and press my face, not wash, and use a light toner (mario badescu toner) in the morning. it keeps the natural oils in your face and doesn’t really dry you out.
i use a face wash at night which i change up for fall/winter vs. spring/summer

  6. reddy says:

…and that is exactly what her skin looks like. Had she said she had been using high-end skin care products since age 15…now that would be a shocking anti-add for those.

    • blackjack says:

Please. She’s a Hollywood/NYC girl, who’s mom is an actress, she knows all the tweaks and tricks of the trade, and the cosmetic procedures that can keep her skin looking more than decent, and it ain’t just hot water. lol She’s been doing subtle injectables for some time now, even though by H’wood standards she probably didn’t need them – that’s the trick, start doing them young-ish and don’t go overboard and no one will be able to point them out, except the trained eye. For instance, this is her in her infamous ugly Oscar outfit from 13 years ago (http://www.glamourparis.com/uploads/images/thumbs/201144/16_2002_261397503_north_607x.jpg ), compare it to the full smiling close up pic up top…sorry Gwyn, but your nasal labial folds don’t just disappear as you age with a good scrubbing from a hot wash cloth. Nice try.

  7. Kiddo says:

Ooh, I can hardly wait for the dead babies, unicorns, sacrificed virgins, puppies and kittens skincare line. When will that be hitting the market? /

    Product Tagline:
“I used to just wash my face like a mere mortal. Now I slather it with the souls of the innocent, and my youth is restored”. *Retailing for $10,000, added bonus: delicate adorable baby otter skin cleansing pad.

    Can I get a “BWA_HA-HA_A”?

  8. vangroovey says:

Well, confession. I only wash my face with a “product” three times a week — and my skin has never looked better. I started doing it this way because i was breaking out like mad and I had wrinkles forming (at 36). So, yeah. I bought about 20 (white – no dye) washclothes — and in the morning and night I just use hot water and kinda “press” it into the skin. I also use an oil mask once a week. I know, sounds counter-intuitive — but I swear its working.

  9. booboolarue says:

You know if she stopped drinking and smoking her skin would look much healthier. Just sayn’

  10. Jayna says:

    I loved that movie Duets.

I don’t think GP has enviable skin or even that great of skin. I could give better tips than her. Pass. Now, someone like Rachel Weisz with stunning skin, I would buy her skin care line or Nigella’s if they had one. Those women are older than Gwyneth and put her skin and complexion to shame.

  11. eliza says:

No matter what this woman says or does everyone will find fault with it. I am not a fan but lately some things in the press about her are rather petty in nature.

So she called herself a girl. What is wrong with that? I sometimes say I’m a girl. Why is that wrong?

There is plently to pick on her for, this seems somewhat silly.

  12. janie says:

Haha! She’s a piece of work! I’m sure one of her servants actually washed her face… those precious, lilly white hands wouldn’t touch anything as peasanty as soap?!

    • emmie_a says:

And I’m guessing she uses exclusive virgin cashmere washcloths, delicately woven to match her pH balance. And holy water.

  13. db says:

I can kind of see that she’d duet singing Cruising — I hear it all the time on radio when I’m in the desert (well, it seems like all the time). Her version, not Smokey Robinsons

  14. Helvetica says:

She looks gorgeous and natural in the first pic.

I can’t help it. I really like her.

She is a a class act. An elegant woman. I don’t feel like there are too many like her.

    • emmie_a says:

I think that’s exactly what she wants you to think – But I just don’t buy it. I think truly classy, elegant women don’t have to constantly talk about how classy and elegant they are. They just are that way. Gwyneth’s image seems too bought, too calculated to be real. …But there is something that I like about her too, if I must confess!

    • Tatjana says:

I like her too. She knows what she is and owns it.

  15. Jaded says:

I’ve been using Cetaphil hypoallergenic face wash and lotion and my skin has never looked better. I buy giant bottles of it at Costco for about $15. No $300 cream is going to make miracles happen. Once a week I exfoliate with Olay Regenerist Thermal Mini-peel. No tanning, no smoking and a healthy, well-balanced diet (no need to starve or detox yourself into thinness Gwyneth) is the not -so-secret secret.

    • AG-UK says:

oooh I use that and I wash with cold water. I use Egyptian Magic too tiny amount and I must say my skin but could be genetic looks good and I look a lot younger than I am. So they tell me 🙂 I do have facials every 3 months more a treat than need.

  16. cro-girl says:

    Fish don’t have placentas.

    • Pumpkin Pie says:

      Finally!

    • hunter says:

Oh god thanks for pointing out that very obvious fallacy. My father is a fish biologist and I can confirm fish do not make placentas, they make eggs (which everyone should already know).

  17. Darkladi says:

More crap from Goop that I’ll ignore.

  18. mkyarwood says:

Nope, hot water is the worst for your skin. Try again! Scrubbing? Don’t you go to spas all the time, lady? I can just hear my facialist Bat slapping that washcloth off her face.

  19. break says:

It helps to have access to 2000 dollar dermatology treatments a few times a year.

  20. I exfoliate every day with baking soda and water, and then I put olive oil on my face. I’m thinking about switching to coconut oil….but my skin looks really good.

    • emmie_a says:

I’ve started using coconut oil for everything – I wash my face with it, moisturize my skin, use it in my hair. I am addicted!!

  21. Alexandria says:

Since we’re all listing our regimens…
    1. I use Cetaphil facial cleanser in the AM and PM
    2. Directly followed by benzoyl peroxide 2.5% (any higher and your face will dry out terribly)
    3. Let that sink in and then I use Cetaphil daily moisturizer with SPF
    4. And lightly pat organic coconut oil all over my face and neck (and body! It’s the best!!!)
    5. Same thing again at night, but I use Olay regenerist night cream

  22. Mary Jane says:

She always looks to have such a bad complexion…

  23. Emily C. says:

The best thing she could do for her skin is eat and not exercise so much (or at least eat enough for how much she exercises, which would mean A LOT.) It doesn’t matter what kind of goop you put on your skin if you’re not putting enough calories in your body to sustain it.

  24. TWINK says:

I want JLO’s secrets to her beautiful skin, not Gwyneth’s!

    • Mean Hannah says:

I want J. Lo’s secret to her skin, too! It’s not all genetics – I’ve seen her Mom and sister’s – and great makeup. I once saw her getting her make up done, and all she needs is a little concealer/light foundation to even out her skin, maybe a little bronzer and she’s camera ready.

  25. anne says:

She is notorious for the amount of money she spends on her looks. Thousands a week on all new techniques, everything from $1,200 facials, every non-invasive surgery, decades of plastic surgeries etc. Don’t believe a word out of her mouth. She will do anything for $, and to to appear superior. (Her no makeup bs and just washcloths – lies lies. And now that Chris is pulling back on her bucks after all her conspicuous consumption she is pretty hard up. And other house is because they have not lived together in about ..oh 7 years .but he is spending more and more time with kids and she refuses to leave LA even though entire family wants to go back too London – kids too! There are wonderful celebs out there – don’t even waster your time or money on ANY advice from this sham artist and for God’s sake do not follow any of her advice – go to the experts who have knowledge and ethics, and take tips like the great ones above, and do some research yourself. Gwyneth is well passedover, but her PR Team and ego just won’t go away in spite of her being loathed.

  26. Nibbi says:

I see stuff bout coconut oil a lot lately. What about for sensitive/ acne/ pore-cloggy skin? I’d like to try it but i break out easily

  27. ToodySezHey says:

Why must rich people make things that should be simple so overly complicated.

War, poverty, disease and here we are discussing how Goop washes her face.

    This bytch….
