Joaquin Phoenix will star in Woody Allen’s next film: good or bad move?

Joaquin Phoenix

Joaquin Phoenix has been flying under the radar for the past few months. He’s still 39 years old, and he’s still dating Allie Teilz, his 19-year-old DJ girlfriend. Yes, it is still a creepy spectacle. Joaquin’s been filming Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice, and he spends his spare time at karate class. He and Allie go together, so I guess that’s one thing they have in common. The paps have caught them working on their forms together. He’s a brown belt, one level before black, and she has a white belt, which is the starter color. Joaquin goes barefoot in the parking lot after class, which is about as gross as dating someone half his age.

Joaquin’s professional life has also taken a turn for the gross. I think Joaquin is one of the most talented actors of his generation, and he’s a tortured soul. He’s now officially signed on for a lead role in Woody Allen’s next (mystery) project. Here’s the scoop from Deadline:

Joaquin Phoenix has finalized a deal to star in the next film directed by Woody Allen, which I’m hearing is going to begin shooting in July. As per usual there’s not much known Allen’s projects before they really get going, but his past few have included gangbusters Midnight In Paris and Blue Jasmine, the latter landing its star Cate Blanchett the Best Actress Oscar this year. The writer-director’s next pic in his seemingly endless pipeline is romantic comedy Magic In The Moonlight, about an Englishman brought in to help unmask a possible swindle in the south of France in the 1920s against a backdrop of wealthy mansions, the Cote d’Azur, jazz joints and fashionable spots for the wealthy of the Jazz Age.

Phoenix is coming off Spike Jonze’s Oscar-nommed Her, which earned the actor a Golden Globe nom, and he just finished Inherent Vice for Paul Thomas Anderson. He his repped by WME and attorney David Weber.

[From Deadline]

Magic In The Moonlight is Woody’s upcoming October release that stars Emma Stone and Colin Firth. Joaquin’s project with Woody remains a mystery. It will probably be a comedy, which is typical for Woody but highly unusual for Joaquin. Blue Jasmine was heavier than Woody’s usual fare, but Joaquin generally goes for the really dark stuff. I won’t be watching this collaboration in the theater, which is sad because I usually catch everything that Joaquin does as soon as possible. Not this time. I guess Scarlett Johansson was correct. Dylan Farrow’s NYT essay won’t stop actors from signing on to work with Woody Allen.

It amazes me how people can continue to turn a blind eye….Disappointed in Joaquin.

I thought the costumes and the concept of Magic in the Moonlight sounded cute, but then I put 2 and 2 together and realized that 50 something year old Colin is playing 25 year old Emma Stone’s love interest (who would have been around 24 when it was filming)…SMH at Hollywood. The habit of casting women young enough to be the daughters as the romantic interests of leading men has become completely ridiculous, and there is a particularly squicky feeling when it happens in a Woody Allen film.

    • lucy2 says:

MTE – when I read a description a while ago and said they were the love interests…ew. I like both actors a lot but that age difference is ridiculous, though not surprising, especially from Woody Allen.

If actors still want to work with WA that’s their choice, but I will not be watching any more of his films, and I will not think too highly of actors who are eager to sign on with him.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

So disappointed in him, as well as Colin Firth and Emma Stone. Agree with you about the leading man/ woman age difference, and with lucy2 that it’s not surprising coming from pervert Allen. Now I am going to leave before his little fan base on this site comes out and says how unfairly he’s treated and it ruins my day. He will never be stopped. I just wonder what’s happening to the two daughters he has now.

    • poppy says:

      ITA.
      very disappointed in JP.
the age thing, UGH. such a tired premise that is beyond pathetic and ridiculous -it keeps me from seeing a lot of films.

    • aemish says:

Golden comment. There’s some blinds about Joaquin using his tweenage girlfriend to scout for underage girls to threeway with.. maybe he and Woody have more in common than we wanted to think possible

    • homegrrrl says:

Both Woody Allen and Joaquin P get sexually turned on by adolescent girls, so…birds of a feather…

  2. merski says:

The first photo really is priceless. Like a proud papa taking his teen daughter to a karate class. Gross.

  3. Red32 says:

    She looks younger than 19.

    • magpie says:

and he looks older than 39.

      • kimber says:

His skin is saggy in his face is showing signs of bitter beer face with a mix of substance abuse. The beard doesnt cover it up.

  4. Lilyvanilli says:

He obviously admires his personal and well as professional work.

  5. MrsBPitt says:

Joaquin is one of the most talented actors out there. He doesn’t seem to care about peoples perceptions of him, though, and it seems most of the time he picks scripts that are really different, like The Master or Her. Personally, I have only watched a couple of Woody’s movies, and that was years ago, pre-scandel, and I didn’t get what all the fuss was about. I thought they sucked! By now, I’m sure everyone in Hollywood knows the controversy surrounding WA, and if an actor chooses to work with him, thats his right, but its my right to choose not to spend my money to go see his work. Its too bad for me, cause I really think JP is brilliant and would probably go see him read the phone book. But I won’t be seeing this one!

    • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

I don’t get Woody’s movies either or how anyone could sit through them – Hannah and her sisters was mega boring and it seems like any flic beyond that would be worse than sitting through a Celine Dion concert opened by Christina Aguilera.

    • kri says:

He is talented. Really exceptional on-screen. But this mofo is batshit crazy. I just don’t know…

    • Hiddles forever says:

      @mrsBPitt

      Exactly!!

I feel I’m free not to pay and watch WA movies, even though he is hiring actors and actresses I could watch in something else.

  6. pru says:

I hope him and the rest of the actors in this movie are prepared to speak as to why they are working with Allen. They shouldn’t get away without making a comment about why it’s ok to work with someone like Allen anymore.

    • decorative item says:

I wonder if the question will even be posed. Hollywood will do everything it can to gloss over the the entire thing.
It says a lot about his self centered, anything for “art” mentality with him being the 1st to sign on after all the revelations came out. This makes me even more determined to never see another of his movies again. Too bad, he has been my favorite for years.

  7. Hmmm says:

He must be desperate to work with Allen. Most AListers refuse, mostly Allen’s movies are low budget, so no big pay check for the actors, also his movies have lost their shine. Plus nobody decent would like the association with a rumoured pedo creep.

    • decorative item says:

He doesn’t need the money and the rumors about W.A. have been around for years.

      • Hmmm says:

Judging from his recent movies, which were all low budget, I doubt he made a lot of money in recent years. He isn’t poor but surely not a top earner in HW.

Sure about those Pedo rumours being around for a long time. I don’t understand how any actor wants to be associated with Allen. Even if you take away the Dylan accusations the Soon Yi story is enough to make your skin crawl.
But since HW is still throwing money at Allen to finance his movies and actors line up to work with him he is not going away.

    • RobN says:

Hmmm, I don’t think you’ve been paying attention. His movies are low budget because that’s the way he likes them, they always have been; less studio involvement means more freedom to make the movie he wants to make, you should take a look at his recent cast lists, nothing about them that says that A listers are shying away from him. The fact that Allen doesn’t try to cast Brad Pitt in something doesn’t mean he has any trouble getting the actors he wants. As for the “shine”, well, a best actress academy award, and multiple nominations in the past few years, certainly shows that isn’t true.

I don’t even like Woody Allen movies, but you have to deal with reality. He is still a huge director who can get any movie he wants, made.

      • Hmmm says:

Just because he still gets awards for his movies doesn’t mean they are cinematic master pieces. A lot of Oscar wins are a joke now. Hollywood nepotism. And no, the heavy hitters and top earners will not work with Allen because their paychecks are bigger than Allen’s whole production budget.

      • maybeiamcrazy says:

It doesn’t matter if Oscars are now a joke or not. Every actor still wants one and Woody Allen makes Oscar-baity movies that generally at least get nominated for something. Yes, it is sad that a child molester still gets to work but he is a director respected by academy so famous actors will always work with him.

      • Pinky Rose says:

Well, he is one of the most influential directors ever like it or not. It is not just because of his oscar wins that his movies are considered masterpieces, but because most prestige and highbrow critics (Slate, Cashiers Du Cinema, Paris Review, BFI, etc) have always appreciated his work.

And regarding his budget, he likes it that way because it is less pressured and he can make a movie a year without thinking about the financial point of it. Also, most actors love to work with Allen (he does not do casting, he just choose someone as the lead and that person always accepts) and accept a minimum payment just for working with him.

      • magpie says:

The Oscars may be a joke to you, but it’s not to THEM. Every A lister (Dicaprio, Clooney, Pitt, Affleck) works for that. An Oscar would be a better prize to them then box office numbers.

  8. Lindy says:

I wonder if actors will also be expected to refuse to work with Bryan Singer.

  9. Artemis says:

Between this, looking like a damn hobo AND dating a 19-year-old: ByeGood Joaquin. Bye.Good.
You don’t care, well I don’t care either. Especially because his family was part of a cult and River being abused is probably one of the main reasons why he was an addict.

He doesn’t even need Allen, Phoenix is one of the few people who can get work based on his talent alone, he doesn’t even need to make money (see also Gosling and Gyllenhaal). Plus if he’s going to work with Allen, it’s going to be Oscar worthy and everybody knows he hates awards so we have to endure his eyerolls, moaning and general disdain for the dog and pony show that is Oscar campaigning.

I do not get him at all. They say he’s a ‘tortured artist’ but he was pretty smart after his failed ‘documentary’ in getting his career back on track so I doubt he’s so ‘tortured’. He is a douche who both spits and needs the industry. I’m over him.

    • starrywonder says:

Seriously. I am over him too and I liked and defended him for his stupid “I’m Still Here.” Ugh.

    • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

Many stars and thumbs up on this post 🙂 throughly excellent writing and spot on.

  10. break says:

He probably dates a 19 year old because anyone older would most likely beg him to quit chain smoking. (as well as all the other things that teenagers wouldn’t “hassle” him about).

    • Dreamyk says:

He’s pretty gross. I remember an interview with him about the time his relationship with Liv Tyler ended..chain smoker, nail biter, lots of nervous tics..and then this interview with Esquire happened and Holy Sh*t:
““The Valley is the f***ing best place for everything,” he says, attacking his wrap. He’s a noisy eater, all grunts, lip smacking and chewing. It’s all part of his informality and easy-going charm. “I like how it looks, how it’s laid out. I just enjoy the feeling here a lot more. There are some really nice neighborhoods, where kids play on their bikes and sh*t. You don’t get that on the Hollywood side.” He grins. “Plus, I go to a lot of porn shoots, so it’s convenient!”

Can you imagine a 19 yr old girl having to deal with all that baggage and seriously whacked behavior? Me, either.

  11. maybeiamcrazy says:

I am on fence about this kind of things. I didn’t protest Cate Blanchett nor will I protest Emma Stone or Colin Firth because they were already done with the movie or contracted to do so when the scandal broke out. But from now on the actors, themselvels, will choose to associate themselves with him even though he is a child molester. That’s why Joaquin disappointed me. I won’t be watching this movie.

Same with Brian Singer too, X-men has a big budget and many workers. But in his next movie, the actors will decide if they want to work with a rapist or not. Can James Mcavoy be held responsible of Brian Singer’s crime, espicially if they are working together for the first time? I really don’t think so.

    • Hmmm says:

      Those accusations are not “new”.
They have been around since 1993. Only Dylan herself spoke about them publicly for the first time last year. Lawsuits against Allen came from Mia Farrow, Dylan was only 7 years old when the alleged abuse happened.

      • maybeiamcrazy says:

I didn’t know that. I bet Joaquin thinks Woody’s actions are part of his ‘quirky artistic integrity’. *rolls eyes* I think Joaquin is madly talented but he does not seem like the most ethical guy.

    • RobN says:

It interests me that you automatically assume that Singer is a rapist. It is strictly a he said – he said at this point, with no proven supporting information that is publicly known, and a pretty well established alibi by the accused. Maybe you wait and see what develops before you decide that he doesn’t get to work anymore.

      • maybeiamcrazy says:

There are two lawsuit against him and he is not defending himself. We all know those parties happened. I am sure there were many stardom promises and silence contracts involved and there probably wasn’t physical power involved but using his star power and psychological force does not make him less of a rapist.

But i really don’t think Hollywood considers these cases as rape because they feel entitled to use their star power. The boys probably did say yes and there are many who would. This is one of rare situation yes means no and since they are underage there shouldn’t even be a question of that.

But i hope i am wrong and he is innocent. Because it is disgusting and i wouldn’t wish surviving a sexual assault on anyone. But i can’t help but wonder if casting couch is involved for young actors on X-men. I really hope there isn’t.

      • Lee says:

Not true. Brett Easton Ellis came out and said that Singer and Roland Emmerich’s “underage parties” are well known in Hollywood. And I believe it, especially after hearing Corey Feldman talk about being surrounded by paedo’s as a child.

As for JP, I like and respect his refusal to buy into the narcissistic self congratulation that is Hollywood, and his extraordinary acting talent. Of course, I won’t be going to see this W.A film, but I won’t hold it against JP. The teen gf thing is gross, but isn’t that par for the course in Crazytown?

      • Hmmm says:

There are TONS of pictures online of Singer and young boys. If you believe they only play catch at those parties you are very naive.

    • captain says:

“Can James Mcavoy be held responsible of Brian Singer’s crime, espicially if they are working together for the first time? I really don’t think so.”

If his parties were well-known in Hollywood, then the actors always knew. Now it just all came out to the general public. If they had no problem working with such a monster before, their refusal to work with him now would be not for any moral but for the image reasons alone.

  12. Sagal says:

If it’s a good script, he can do what he wants. If I used morality to judge what artists I listen to, what books to read, or even what blogs to visit, I’d have a small music collection, read very few books & I couldn’t read this website because of the gossip you peddle.

    • Yeah this is exactly how I feel. For the sake of consistency and because I’m admittedly too lazy to vet every painter, sculptor, author, actor, director, musician, screen writer, publisher, etc, etc I can’t say that I feel strongly that actors should refuse to work with Allen.

    • reba says:

Interesting comment, Sagal. I agree with you and TOK, especially to the extent that we cannot vet every single source of art, not to mention politicians, etc.
But pedophilia is up there at the top of the list of disgusting crimes, so I have no problem boycotting WA. Even if he made hilarious movies (which he doesn’t – his stuff is painfully unfunny), I would not be a consumer. However, anyone who wants to work with him, that’s their problem.
P.S. Sagal, are you saying this website is immoral?

      • Hiddles forever says:

maybe it is immoral but many posters here don’t condone pedos….

  13. poppy says:

how did i miss this dating his daughter BS?
he’s got to be pretty pitiful emotionally to want/need to date someone that young.
all of this definitely colors my perception of him. yucky.

  14. OhDear says:

Between this and Diane Keaton’s comments I can’t even.

  15. No says:

I don’t understand why everyone is so quick to condemn anyone who continues to support and work with Woody Allen. I’m no fan girl but I do know what it is like to be accused of something that was not true and have anyone within earshot just run with the rumor. I was fortunate that my situation only had a negative effect on my social life, I can only imagine the devastating impact that accusation could of had if it crossed over to my professional life. Woody Allen could very well be a pervert but no one but him knows for sure. He was never convicted or found guilty of any wrong doing yet everyone wants his career to be destroyed. What happened to being innocent until proven guilty?

    • Hiddles forever says:

I am a rape survivor and I know very well that 90% of times the rapists/pedos don’t get a conviction. Surely many people are accustomed to forget that ‘for the sake of art’.
I guess that applies to WA’s case too.

      • Leen says:

Same here Hiddles forever. 90% of cases don’t even get reported to the police and rapists/pedos don’t get a conviction. Mine happened within my extended family, and now I don’t talk to any of my family members who stand by the abuser. Sorry, but as this hits close to home, I lose any respect with someone who continuously associates with a rapists/pedo who did not do his time.

  16. eliza says:

Woody Allen is like a flame that all moths are attracted to.

Not saying the actors who work with him are sexual deviants BUT you have to wonder about the true nature of people who praise and support the Allen’s, Polanski’s and Singer’s of the world. Are jobs in Hollywood that important that you feel the need to turn a blind eye and sell your soul to the devil?

    • claire says:

I think that sums it up for the actors. The guy has not been charged or convicted, no one knows the whole story and some people think Mia is wacky. If he’d been charged and convicted maybe actors would take a stand, but at this point…it’s he said / she said and some might know Woody pretty well to decide that they believe him.

    • Hiddles forever says:

      @eliza

“Are jobs in Hollywood that important that you feel the need to turn a blind eye and sell your soul to the devil? ”

      YES.

    • captain says:

Mia was supporting her friend Polansky all the way. Bizzare world of Hollywood.

  17. cubfan34 says:

Woody has never been charged with anything. JP will do fine.

  18. Tania says:

No Emma no 🙁 it didn’t hurt Cate so I guess. Very telling on Hollywood how he’s still being embraced with open arms.

  19. Beatrice says:

I 100% believe Woody Allen is innocent in the case between him and Dylan Farrow and I am really looking forward to seeing Joaquin in an Allen film. Two of my favorites in show business.

    • Hiddles forever says:

I guess… you wouldn’t leave your children with him though? Ah.

  20. siri says:

JP did choose to work with Allen, so obviously the accusations don’t bother him. But the artist Allen is the same person that the daughter said molested her. How people can seperate one from the other I will never understand. I always liked JP’s acting, and he’s probably gonna be good in a WA movie as well, but like he can choose where he’s in, I can choose not to pay for a ticket.
