Joaquin Phoenix out, Ethan Hawke in for Doctor Strange: good choice?

wenn21678329

One month ago, all of the Marvel gossips, trade papers and industry sites were saying that Joaquin Phoenix was a sure thing for Doctor Strange. The Joaquin rumors had been flying around for a few months, but it really seemed like the deal was close to being completed by the end of August. And then… radio silence. It was definitely weird. As I said at the time, I don’t have any doubt that Joaquin would be more than capable of pulling off a superhero/comic book character. My concern was that Joaquin would never be a “company man” for Marvel – he wouldn’t be into the promotional work, the availability, the “not being a curmudgeon” part of the job. Well, guess what? It seems like Joaquin might be out of the running… and now Marvel is looking at Ethan Hawke!

After working their hardest to try to convince Joaquin Phoenix that he’s the right fit for DOCTOR STRANGE, it appears Marvel Studios has moved on after coming to terms with the fact that that marriage isn’t going to happen, and according to my sources, they’ve already found their long-term rebound. Ethan Hawke is their new guy, having offered him the role on Friday. I hear Hawke accepted the job over the weekend, and things have quickly progressed into contract talks, with a six-picture deal being what Marvel is hoping to lock him into.

Hawke’s name is one that was tossed around early in the process due to his prior working relationship with director Scott Derrickson on SINISTER, and, while Hawke has always done solid work throughout his career (nominated for Oscars as both an actor and a writer), he’s never really had anything of this magnitude on his resume. With word going around that Jon Spaights was involved with a Page One rewrite that would eliminate any type of origin story approach to DOCTOR STRANGE and would pick up the Sorcerer Supreme as an active part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as hinted at in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, Hawke’s age seems to land in the right range for where they’d want this character to be as they introduce him in Phase Three.

As for Phoenix, a number of issues wound up derailing his involvement – be it his uncertainty in taking on this type of film or the number of movies or the money. It just wasn’t meant to be, and, after doing this dance with him since just before San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel couldn’t be left hanging without a dance partner any longer. After all, how long can you wait around for someone to convince themselves that everything might be okay when they aren’t quite sure?

So there you have it… Ethan Hawke just stepped to the front of the line on DOCTOR STRANGE, and, unless something happens at the negotiating table to collapse this, he should be announced as Marvel’s choice soon enough.

Ethan does have the “indie street cred” of someone like Joaquin, but Ethan has actively pursued studio roles and “money parts” throughout his career as well. After a flirtation with leading-man roles in his youth, Ethan has embraced his character-actor status rather brilliantly and his CV is full of diverse characters in a wide range of films. And I kind of think he would be great at helming his own Marvel franchise – while he IS focused on independent films and theater work, he’s shown that he’s more than capable of “selling” and being a “company man” if need be. This choice doesn’t disappoint me at all!

The source is not reliable and on twitter, the movie journalists agreed to say it’s always Phoenix for Marvel even if the problem in negociation is the promotion and how many movies

  2. starrywonder says:

I hope Joaquin is out since depending on the phase of the moon he would be okay with taking part in the movie franchise or just flip out and say nope and talk about how his soul is being tormented by people giving him money.

  3. Kali says:

While I’ll always want Pedro Pascal for Strange, I would be more than ok with Ethan Hawke. I just want them to cast somebody!

  4. Lilacflowers says:

I often find Ethan annoying but that may be part of his acting. I like that he is willing to try different things and his work on the “Before” series and his commitment to the experiment that was “Boyhood.” It should be interesting to see what he does with this and how he fits in with the other Marvel actors. I thought Joaquin would have been good but he had his own doubts about working with green screen technology, which he had never done.

  5. 'P'enny says:

Collider CEO on Twitter says this story is rubbish and Joaquan has signed on the dotted line, Marvel will announce it shortly.

  6. Gina says:

I watched To Die For last week and Joaquin pretty much nailed the part. Then, being on this nostalgia kick I’m on, I saw Reality Bites where Ethan was so made for the part. Six of one, half a dozen of the other…leaning towards….My Caption, Oh Captain Ethan…slight edge.

  7. PunkyMomma says:

Leaning towads Ethan, only for the fact that Joaquin is bananas when it comes to PR and I can’t see Marvel signing on to his craziness.

  8. serena says:

NOPE. I want Joaquin back! Ethan could be more like a doctor weirdo.

  9. Tig says:

While Joaquin has more the “look” of Dr. Strange, no doubt Ethan would be a ton easier to work with come promo time. And hats off to Ethan for Boyhood-so hope that movie isn’t forgotten come awards season.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Boyhood took real commitment (12 years!) from him and Patricia Arquette. They deserve lots of hats off for that one.

      • mimif says:

I can’t wait to see it. I think it’s the only movie I’m interested in seeing this year.

    • I agree that Ethan would be far easier to work with once the movie is made. Marvel seems to require quite a big commitment on the promo side, and, frankly, I think this movie is going to be a harder sell anyway.

    • Dommy dearest says:

Phoenix has the look of Strange? You do know Strange is considered an attractive man in comics right? Phoenix is not.

  10. blvdb says:

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO……………..!!!!!!!!

  11. Chicken Fantasy says:

No. Ethan has the charm of a dead rat.

  12. Eve says:

I really like Hawke, wouldn’t mind seeing him playing Strange, but the source is NOT reliable.

ThisIsInfamous is the same website that has already claimed Jon Hamm and Jack Huston were “top choices” for the role and were “very close” to sign with Marvel. It seems like they throw every name they can think of and hope one of them will stick:

I’m kind of glad to hear Joaquin is out if the story is teue. He’s a great actor but he would not have been a good fit for Marvel but I’d rather have him than Ethan. I don’t know why Marvel is going after the Gen X indie actors for Doctor Strange. They need someone a little older with modern likability. Not feeling Ethan Hawke either.

  14. Black is beautiful says:

    No! Joaquin, please.

  15. Courtney says:

    90’s crush alert! Yay Ethan!

  16. Ashley says:

How about the articles about Dr. Strange cease until Marvel actually gives us a name? Random film websites trying to get hits are claiming that everyone and his brother will be this part. So ridiculous.

  17. Josefa says:

I’ve never really found Ethan charismatic as an actor. Joaquin is fantastic but I agree with some of the posters above, I’m not sure how he’d handle the mad promotion surrounding Marvel films.

  18. Dommy dearest says:

Aiden Gillien is my choice for Strange.

  19. Anne de Vries says:

I want Oded Fehr for the role SO MUCH. He’d be awesome
