PETA wants Derick Dillard to apologize for being a kitty-hating douchebag

DD1

I was about to go on a rant against PETA, but I have to bite my tongue. PETA sent out a notice and an open letter asking Derick Dillard to apologize for sledding over a small ginger kitty. My first thought was: “Why are they making a stink about that and not the bloody, macabre horror show that was Kid Rock’s Rolling Stone interview?” But as it turns out, PETA did make a statement about the Kid Rock interview. That’s why I’m biting my tongue… this time.

As we discussed yesterday, Derick Dillard is a jackass. He aimed his sled (a baking sheet) straight at a little kitty, just minding her own business. PETA’s “Director of Christian Outreach and Engagement” (???) sent out the following open letter to Dillard:

Dear Mr. Dillard,

I’m writing to you as PETA’s director of Christian outreach and engagement in response to the video you posted on your Instagram account on March 1, which depicts you apparently purposely sledding directly into an unsuspecting cat. Almost more disturbing than your enjoyment in it was your family’s.

Might doesn’t make right, but that’s the message you’ve sent to scores of impressionable young children and loyal fans. I hope you’ll publicly apologize for your actions and remind your followers that Jesus’ command to “do unto others” includes all of God’s creatures.

Sincerely,
Sarah Withrow King
Director of Christian Outreach and Engagement

[From PETA]

Many of you pointed out that the Catholics do animal-rights better than the Baptists. I’ve never really thought about it that way, mostly because I’m surrounded by Baptists in a very dog-friendly area. But yes, I think as far as religious doctrines go, the Catholics probably do animal rights better than the Baptists or whatever wingnut offshoot the Duggars and the Dillards are. And while PETA is usually “no bueno,” I don’t mind them calling out Derick Dillard at all. I still feel a pang for this poor kitty.

Sledding with friends and family at the Duggar home 🙂 #smallestsled

He won’t apologize. He thought it was hilarious and so did his inbred group of cackling idiot family and friends. He thinks “it’s just a cat.” These people make me want to spit.

    • NewWester says:

I agree he will not apologize. But if a major sponsor such as a pet food company that advertises during their show decides to pull all ads and support, plus a few other sponsors . Maybe something will happen.

      • AntiSocialButterfly says:

Yes! I hope someone creates a boycott list for advertisers on the Toilet Channel & hurts their bottom dollar. That’d possibly get these lice out of our collective hair ( gross metaphor, sorry, but that is how I view them). Dump them, Toilet Channel.

      • Kat says:

@AntiSocialButterfly, that comment was pure gold, and yes, I’m totally going to use the ToiLet Channel reference at some point (it’s just too good not to steal!) 😀

    • Kiddo says:

They are loving the extra attention that these acts and the subsequent chastising have brought. They are attention whores like any other reality ‘stars’. I’m not religious, but isn’t there something in the Bible about not being prideful and an attention whore?

“Thou shalt not be a blatant attention whore, using they name in vain,”? Or something like that, right?

      • Kiddo says:

        thy

      • FLORC says:

        Kiddo
You are correct. That doesn’t stop all the most pious to feel a sense of superiority. We’re all guilty of it. It’s part of the human condition. That some can’t take a step back and admit fault is true pride. That they are above it all.

This family from what i’ve observed is prideful with the best of them. And appear to value material items so greatly. They’re talking out of both sides of their mouths. When is the fall from their high horse coming?

      • Kiddo says:

Most of us don’t have a reality show, nor want one.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Kiddo, you know your Bible well. “Let he who hast never whored for attention try to sled over a cat.” I think that’s how they read it. Open to different interpretations and whatnot.

Seriously, there are tons of references in the Bible to pride as a failing. One more reason I’m uncomfortable with the Duggars (not that I need another reason) is that I was brought up to “pray in the closet” or to keep your spiritual side private and not use it to get attention and say “look how righteous I am!” It’s a minor thing, and a personal choice, but it’s questionable to me whether they think they’re setting an example of Christianity, or they’re just getting off on the attention they get for their “righteousness.”

      • Kiddo says:

“Let he who hast never whored for attention try to sled over a cat.”

        Dead.

      • Snazzy says:

“Let he who hast never whored for attention try to sled over a cat”
I am sitting here, alone at my desk, laughing out loud like an idiot
        Thank you GNAT 😀

      • MC2 says:

GNAT- I think you nailed it! I’m am not a practicing religious person but my family members who are the Christians I’d want to be, if I were practicing, don’t go preaching or wagging their fingers at others. They do good things in the community. I know a lot of nuns (through DV work) that help homeless & abused women & they NEVER judge them. They never put the women down or say they are going to hell. I think they are living much closer to “God” and “his will” then the Duggars ever will.

      • Nilber says:

This family drives me insane. In Proverbs 16 it tells of pride before the fall. Throughout the bible we are told of working out our convictions (with fear & trembling though I am seriously paraphrasing at the moment)
I think about how self righteous this family comes across. The bible speaks on judge as you will be judged but it does also says you can judge a tree by the fruit it bears. I can promise you this there is no big or little sin God’s eyes. Everyone will eventually reap what they sow.
I have enough of my own to answer for but no one, not even the Duggars, are innocent. They come across so judgmental that instead of winning people to the Lord it seems to turn people off. There are many types of Baptist by the way and I am curious which one they are.
I was raised in the Baptist faith. My parents have been married 37 yrs and still act like newlyweds. I have 1 sister. My Dad is a Southern Baptist Preacher. I am not just spouting off this show has always fascinated me. My parents raised us with a firm foundation in our core beliefs. They also taught us to have respect for others who might not have been raised the same way. That is what most people don’t do anymore though teach their kids respect.

      • Hakura says:

@FLORC – “When is the fall from their high horse coming?”

I’m not sure, but it’d be nice to see said high horse double back & run over *them* (see how they like being run over by something that outweighs them by hundreds of pounds).

        @GNAT – *also Dead*

      • homegrrrl says:

I want to thank all reality stars for helping me to save $. I no longer prescribe to cable because of this and all displays of human counterparts that are the cancer of entertainment. The last thing I need to pay for is the creepy sideshow that is the duggars, kardashinanigans or anything real housewifey. Thankyou for being you, now go away!

      • FLORC says:

Someone told me years and years ago that when a christian based belief or religion is practiced correctly you there are 2 things to take note of.
        1. You see this person as someone you’ll strive to emulate. Their kindness and decency is so great they make you want to be better.

        2. You should have no clue what religion they practice.
They’re not preachy. They’re respectful of your practices and beliefs and don’t push theirs onto you.

Now, some people only get 1 of these and still practice. These people get neither. They are people who do not believe in a lord they read about. They’re people who pay lipservice to an altered version of “God” to suit their own wants for justification. These people. We don’t pray to the same god.

    • Judyk says:

Gnat, I’m so glad you used the “inbred” word…I’ve wanted to for so very long.

Not always a PETA advocate, but I say HURRAY for that most excellent letter directed to Triple D (Derick Dillard Dumba$$). However, I’m not sure he knows how to read.

      • NGBoston says:

Yes, fantastic letter from PETA—really nailed it.

Derick Dillard is an ignorant brain-washed fool. Ugh

    • kri says:

I think he’s “just a turd glob” and perhaps a giant cookiesheet/sled should run him over.

    • khaveman says:

Douche of the highest order. I hope the cat isn’t hurt. Whose cat is it? Hopefully not theirs.

    • joann says:

the cat jumped out of the way its not like he was tied to a tree people get a life people ….it was not a kitty it was a full grown cat ,,,,,,wow you people make me sick

      • jwoolman says:

Joann- kitty doesn’t mean kitten. It’s just a common name for any cat of any age. Nobody thought that a kitten was out by herself on the snow.

Cats do remember traumatic experiences all their lives, and I would say seeing a large sled heading right toward you qualifies. One cat who was tossed from a car forever after panicked when riding in a car. He was seriously distressed., way beyond the normal “I don’t want to go to the vet” reactions. He was usually a very mellow cat.

Another cat arrived skeletal and limping, the vet said she had been recently pregnant. My guess is that she was picked up and tossed by somebody, too, because until the day she died years later she would get stiff with a panicked look in her eye whenever I had to pick her up. I could see the conflict in her eyes- she was still traumatized from prior abuse but at the same time she trusted me.

So this guy’s target wasn’t “just a cat”. She was a thinking, feeling, remembering creature just like you. You wouldn’t say “it was just a baby” if a human infant had been the target.

      • Alice says:

Jwoolman. I’m not so sure that someone who cares so little for a living animal cares much more for a human.

  2. INeedANap says:

Dammit PETA, don’t make me agree with you!

    • FLORC says:

PETA talks a good game. I use to donate was a card carrying member. Then you get a peek into what they really are and believe. Sadly, if it was up to PETA they would take that cat and measure if it can survie in the world without feeling it’s become too domesticated. If it has they put it down. Why? Because it’s no longer an animal. It’s a slave of man. Sick group.

What they release to the public is always well said and easily agreeable though.

      • yep says:

True. And thank you for bringing it up.
Not alot of people have the understanding of how the PETA game works, and its sinister underlayer.

      • FLORC says:

        yep
1 of my 1st jobs was working at an animal shelter. A notice at one point was put out not to let anyone on this list adopt animals. They were PETA activists and were adopting the animals to be put down. And their method was unethical.

To side track this though. I wish I could still work at a shelter. There’s few things more appreciative and loving than a shelter animal.

  3. Patricia says:

That video makes my stomach turn. I just want to pick that kitty up and bring her inside, give her some treats, pet her little head and let her curl up in a warm bed. How could anyone purposely frighten and harm an innocent animal? People are so effed up.

Sometimes I verbally scorn my male cat when he’s acting the fool. Gently. Because he’s asking for it lol (example: running into the nursery meowing at the top of his lungs just as I’m laying my baby down to sleep. Or running outside and just standing there refusing to come in. Until I put on my snow boots to come after him, of course. Me struggling into my boots is his cue to run back in the house and go take a nap). But I adore him, and I adore my perfect little female cat who doesn’t pull these tricks. I’m giving them extra love today.

Cats are complex and intelligent creatures who deserve respect!

    • Kitten says:

Your story sounds like my two kitties: boy and girl.

The boy gets yelled at (just his name in a large, “booming” voice) and a nose-tapping for going after my older girl kitty. I think he’s FINALLY starting to get it. He’s a troublesome little guy, very contrary, constantly needs attention, loves his food, and is incredibly smart. My girl kitty is an absolute angel-gentle and polite, always ready for a cuddle and pet.

I agree that cats are absolutely complex and intelligent creatures. They’re also such an incredible source of comfort for me.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Your cats are so beautiful. My cat is so sweet, and he’s very good. He was abandoned by his former “owner” and lived outside for two years before we realized what was going on and stole him. He was so grateful to have a warm place to stay and is so sweet, I’m afraid we may have overcompensated a bit. Spoiled him a little. The first time I said “no” to him, he looked completely baffled. “What is the meaning of this word ‘no?’ I do not recognize it, nor like the sound of it.” Lol

      • Judyk says:

Kitten, I have two black brother kitties that I rescued. Was never much of a cat person before that, but I am so totally in love with them both.

      • Kitten says:

That’s so awesome GNAT 🙂 Your kitty is so lucky to have been given a warm and loving home. I always feel really awful for homeless kitties, especially this year with all the snow around here…

@JudyK-Many a cat-hater or even people who are indifferent to cats have been converted once they have one (or two!) of their own. I ADORE black cats but they are always the last to be adopted so you did a wonderful thing bringing those little guys into your home.

        Yay cats!!!

      • FLORC says:

GNAT that’s so cute! They’re smart. Some article was saying how Cats domesticated themselves for our benefit.

        Kitten
When I worked at a shelter black kittens were always returned. Post halloween people that didn’t realise what a commitment they are. Then they’re no longer kittens and few people adopted cats. Even though the cats were probably the best fit for people. They just wanted out of those cages 🙁

This family reached a new level of vile. I might have been indifferent before this thinking their ignorance is contained. Now? Cancel their show!

      • Maryke says:

I’ve been reading the comments on here for some time and it’s nice to see that the people whom I agree with most of the time share the same love for cats!
We live to serve two tuxes in this household. One I took in when my neighbor realized two kittens were too much for her too handle with a toddler around and the other one we found shivering in the rain as a kitten, no owner to be found. One of them is a true little sh*thead, very needy for attention and always pestering my older cat. But then again, Mr. Senior Citizen over here did the exact same thing to the previous generation when he was younger, so, I guess he’s experiencing some karma. They do end up sleeping together on the bed though.
Love them both to bits. The older one really doesn’t like to be picked up, but loves to cuddle up in bed and on my lap. The younger one is either racing through the house or finding a way to climb on top of you to get some (more) attention…
This family is a perfect example of people that need someone else to be their conscience. They don’t seem to know how to make decisions that do not harm other people. Only thinking about what they want for themselves. Treating animals like this is the perfect example. The animal has done nothing wrong, it isn’t even aware that someone would want to hurt it. Hurting it is easy and gives a sense of power and if mommy isn’t there to tell them off, it’s fun. Yuk.

      • Hakura says:

@Kitten & FLORC – Why on Earth are black cats so difficult to adopt out? The superstitious thing? (That would just baffle me).

Cats have always been my favorite animal (was *obsessed* with them as a kid) but have unfortunately not yet had the pleasure of having one to call my own. I’ve compensated with spoiled rotten guinea pigs who I sometimes believe *think* they’re cats. I hope to have the privilege one day, though!

Regardless, this guy is a sh*thead who I could totally see going around tying *cans* to kitty tails for a cheap laugh, then uploading a video. I cringe to see what they’re teaching those kids.

      • FLORC says:

        Hakura
A little of everything. Superstitious yes and no. My shelter would put a wait list on black cat adoptions for October. You could adopt, but not take home the cat until after Halloween to make sure the cat was wanted for a forever home and not as a prop for the holidays. And others get black cats for any number or reasons and do not realize what work it is.

I can’t imagine how anyone could bring themselves to harm a helpless animal. I certainly can’t even imagine laughing while doing it.

  4. BRE says:

Perhaps like when they kissed in picture, Mom and Dad Dugger will post a video of them trying to hit a cat in support.

  5. savu says:

That was sickening to watch. Before clicking on the video, I thought it wouldn’t be so blatant, but holy crap. I was thinking about it for an hour afterward yesterday. Any apology will be half-assed.

As for what some people said in the comments yesterday, you can totally tell what kind of person someone is by how they treat animals. For sure. And this guy is a d-bag.

    • insomniac says:

Yep. I’ve known a few people who thought terrorizing animals like that was funny. Unsurprisingly, they weren’t good people in general.

      • Jag says:

He has crazy eyes. The kind that makes me think he would be an alleged serial killer.

      • Belle Epoch says:

MAJOR crazy eyes! Everything about him is slightly off. Is he mentally limited?

Hitting the cat was very deliberate, and it can’t be an isolated incident. Imagine him as a father, showing his kids how to drown puppies and throw rocks at squirrels. The world needs a Quiverfull of Duggars as much as it needs measles back.

      • Hakura says:

@Belle Epoch – I just mentioned above how I could easily see him tying cans to a cat’s tail & uploading the video, so totally with you there. And something about the phrase ‘Quiverfull of Duggars’ caused a sinister shiver to go down my spine.

  6. yael says:

what a toolbag. someone should run him over on a baking sheet.

  7. Lilacflowers says:

A female voice was shouting “push him, push him.” Who was that? She is as bad as he is and should be called out as well. Disgusting excuses for human beings. A person who will go after a cat like that also won’t hesitate to bully a child.

    • jwoolman says:

It didn’t seem to occur to any of them to just walk over to the cat, scratch her under the chin, and wave a treat or dangle a string in front of her to get her to move from his path. If she was really mellow, they could have picked her up and kept her safe while the sled was moving. Just walking over would probably have inspired her to get up and leave without the trauma.

  8. Andrea says:

I guess the Christians are so bad they have a whole Department of PETA dedicated to educating them hence the Director of Christian Outreach and Engagement positions. Anywho …. I emailed the PR department of Walmart to complain. One day after the cat video he posted to Instagram he was a proud Walmart employee. Easy joke I know, but he actually works as a CPA in the accounting department.

  9. Merritt says:

The Duggars are evil. They have put me in agreement with PETA about something, which I resent because PETA is terrible too. This awful family needs to be taken off TV. Their sexism, homophobia, and now animal abuse disgust me.

  10. minx says:

Ugh, I can’t express how much I loathe him and that whole disgusting family.

  11. Esmom says:

Awesome letter from PETA. Who knew they had a director of Christian outreach and engagement? Maybe the position was just created. In any case she really nails it with her last sentence.

    • jwoolman says:

I’m not surprised they have Christian outreach- animal rights fits in well with many Christian frameworks. Not sure how attractive PETA’s approach would be to most, but I’m sure they have members who are active in their churches. In any case, the letter was excellent. No ranting, made the point simply and effectively.

Maybe the outreach has something to do with the abusive behavior of some very loud Christians toward animals, as described by people here. It might be a serious problem in some Christian communities that the outreach was created to help address, at the request of other-minded people in the congregations that wanted some help.

  12. BengalCat2000 says:

I saw a short documentary a few years ago about a prison that offered pet therapy. Inmates who qualified were allowed to keep cats and dogs. The results were extremely positive. The “worst” people in our society have more humanity than these tw*ts.

    • Kitten says:

Do you remember the name of the short, Bengal?
      Would love to watch that.

      • BengalCat2000 says:

@kitten, I don’t, sorry. I believe it was a segment on 60 Minutes or was on the Sunday morning show with Charles Osgood. It’s worth researching now that I think about it becomes it was so inspiring. Dang.
Sending warm Hugs to your kitties!

  13. Anon says:

I didn’t watch it again, but the video I seen…he clearly says (or the other Duggar-groom said it) “Move, kitty” as if it to blame the cat before hand.

  14. Danadoodlebug says:

Please contact TLC and the show’s sponsors! I just did! Might not do anything, but it sure as hell made me feel better!

  15. Ginger says:

So let me get this straight…they are pro life but hate animals (Oh and love guns)? Yah, this is one of the reasons I converted from the Baptist Christian faith I was raised in to Buddhism many years ago. (I’m not saying that ALL people in the Baptist faith are like this but the majority of them are hateful hypocrites and I couldn’t stand it) People like him will never apologize. But part of me hopes he reincarnates as a cat in his next life. Karma baby.

    • Lucky Charm says:

Apparently they skip right past the part of the Bible that tells us to be good stewards of the earth and to protect all of the animals and God’s creatures. And that whole “love thy neighbor” thing, too.

    • Maryke says:

Please do not let him reincarnate as a cat. He might be loved by someone that cares about animals… No, please let him go to heaven, the one full of his kind and please let him stay there. To me, that place would be hell and that way we’re all happy.

  16. kri says:

I would also like his mother to apologize to the planet for birthing him.

    • Hakura says:

There are a list of mothers this should be required of. (a disproportionate amount of them being associated with TLC).

‘Dear World – My bad. Srsly.’

  17. Can we sue Dullard for his stuupid hairdont?

  18. Lucky Charm says:

This is why I like the Bates family so much better. Yes, I know they subscribe to many of the same beliefs as the Duggar’s, but they come across as more human and compassionate. Unlike the Duggar’s long documented history of animal abuse and neglect, I have never seen or heard of any member of the Bates family behaving that way. I think the Bates’ just have more class.

And speaking of, they also had three children get married recently, and those were all very nice weddings, not tacky like Jill and Jessa did. Jill’s mother in law LITERALLY was released from the hospital and went directly to the church to attend the wedding, and Jill went BAREFOOT at her wedding because she liked the height difference between her and Derick! Surely she’s heard of ballet flats?! Ugghh…These people can’t get off TV soon enough.

  19. Jaded says:

Can we start a petition to get this bunch of bone-headed breeders off the air? I mean really, the crap that TLC has inflicted on TV viewers is unreal, like they’re deliberately scouring the country for the worst kind of bottom-feeding idiots to showcase and throw a ton of money at. Horrible people, truly horrible.

  20. PoppyAdair says:

I can’t bring myself to look at the video; the descriptions alone make me sick…and I am a dog person! I hate PETA, but I must admit that I am glad they are calling out this numb nut and his odious relatives about this. And while I never watch their ridiculous show, I will be first in line to boycott any company that advertises during it (but I need someone who does watch to tell me what to boycott 🙂 ).

Animal cruelty is no joke. Abuse, torture, or neglect of animals are symptoms of some very scary mental illnesses (e.g., sociopathy) and, I believe, strong indicators of a person’s real character. Since he genuinely seems to think he did nothing wrong and that this whole incident was humorous, I sincerely hope Derick gets the psychiatric intervention and treatment he so desperately needs.

  21. Rachel says:

I can’t even bring myself to watch that video. This breaks my heart. Seems like the hate they spread doesn’t stop at people. Now they have to injure animals for fun too?

  22. Elaine says:

Nobody should be surprised, Catholics or religion in general breeds hypocrites.
Won’t be tuning in to the show any more, its disgusting.
Was Jill there, I am surprised if she thought it was funny, but she has to stand by her man.
I always thought he was a little on the slow side.

    • jwoolman says:

They’re not Catholic. See previous post for many stories about St. Francis of Assisi and the Catholic tradition of blessing the animals in church. The animals have a bunch of patron saints looking out for them…

Is this the guy who can’t stand Catholics? Or was that another Duggar groom or scion?

      • portlandjan says:

The Catholic-hater is the other moron, Ben Seewald (married to Jessa Duggar).

  23. Miran says:

He won’t apologize. He thought it was funny and so did the rest of his redneck wing it family. God I can’t stand the Duggars.

  24. Layla says:

How did Catholics get dragged into this discussion?

  25. portlandjan says:

I can’t WAIT for them to find out 2 things:
    1. There is indeed a god and 2. However, the deity in question is the cat goddess, Bastet.

  26. OTHER RENEE says:

This makes so angry that I can’t see straight. Stupid loser degenerate.

  27. cat says:

I cannot stand this family to begin with because of there conservative views, now I read this article & see the video of them trying to hurt a innocent cat, there is a special place in hell for them!!!!!!! Kid rock will be right beside them. Shame on all of them, they will pay for hurting Gods creatures!!!!

  28. BlackJack Kitty says:

I cannot stand these people. They make me sick. I didn’t want to watch the video. We have a big black kitty & the thought of someone being mean to him makes my blood boil. Of course he’s a bada$$ so I’d like to think he would have scratched this idiot’s eyes out. He can be quite the little devil boy. But I wouldn’t have him any other way. 😊
