Cressida Bonas’ Mulberry commercial released: it’s actually pretty cute?

You know what sort of surprises me? Cressida Bonas’ transition to “celebrity/actress/model” is really working. Like, she’s pulling it off with some legitimacy. You would think that a 26-year-old former royal girlfriend would be able to get some attention, of course, especially since she’s pretty and blonde and well-connected, but Cressida really is “starting” a whole new career and it’s working. She’s already scored her first film acting role (in Tulip Fever), she’s already being groomed by Harvey Weinstein (ew), and she’s already headlining a major fashion campaign for Mulberry.

Cressida came to LA last month on behalf of her Mulberry contract. She wore the same Mulberry dress (the Buttercup Dress) in two different colors to two different events. Not surprisingly, her Mulberry commercial/video features Cressida in the same dress. She also shows off her impressive dance moves – remember, Cressida studied dance at university. She really is a trained dancer and she moves very well.

It’s a cute ad. I end up watching a lot of these commercials/short video ads and I enjoyed this. I prefer this kind of thing to, say, Matthew McConaughey sitting in a Lincoln and talking about the cosmos. The song in this Mulberry ad is ESG’s “Dance”. Cressida told WWD: “It was so much fun. I had a choreographed routine, but a lot of it was improvised because the music just makes you want to dance naturally.”

Here are some more photos of Cressida acting like she’s too big of a star to pose on the red carpet for the McQueen exhibition last Thursday:

    Nope.

  2. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I thought it was cute, too. I’m not sure how deep her potential runs, but it was a nice start.

    • FLORC says:

It was cute. And the dress looks a lot better when in motion. It’s (imo) not a great dress for the red carpet to be seen mostly in still shots.

She’s a skilled dancer. This isn’t the best example because it’s very commericial based and not that creative regarding dance moves. She’s playing to her strengths.

  3. Imo says:

I hope she becomes more than the next Goldie Hawn. If she has any real talent she can be the next Dakota Fanning, at best.

    • We Are All Made of Stars says:

Huh? Goldie Hawn was a major comedic star.

      • LAK says:

IMO: you realise what a compliment it is you just gave Cressida by comparing her to Goldie Hawn?

Goldie’s own kids barely live upto their mother’s billing.

      • Imo says:

Aargh! Meant Kate Hudson, queen of the craptastic rom-coms. I grew up totally obsessed with Private Benjamin and adore Goldie lol.

    • ncboudicca says:

Maybe Imo meant to say Kate Hudson and not Goldie Hawn?

    • bluhare says:

Kate Hudson has been a big disappointment (IMO). She was good in Almost Famous, but from what I have read that was art imitating her life. Other than that? Meh. She drives me nuts with that smug smirk of hers.

I thought Cressida was pretty good. Not great, but pretty good. She does ethereal rather well.

      • Imo says:

Yes KH is bubbly and likeable but has the depth of a teaspoon. She is a vanilla actress but seems to be a Hollywood favorite and manages to work. Without talent this is the best Cressida can hope for.

  4. imjustme says:

I don’t know… it made me cringe a bit. Just seemed awkward, though she is a lovely dancer.

    • Hudson Girl says:

Yes, agreed. Can’t put my finger on it.
The Direction? Editing? They should have had more full body shots of her while dancing instead of just her upper half. It felt like a hair AD rather than a Mood setting AD for a Fashion Designer. She looked pretty.

  5. We Are All Made of Stars says:

A perfectly average looking chick with rather average dance skills in a completely average commercial. What’s next?

    • runCMC says:

Wow, THANK YOU. I thought I was taking crazy pills there for a sec. That was definitely average dancing. Nothing that would suggest she’s been “classically trained”. From the description I thought she’d be doing graceful turns and leaps, not a fun little kicky dance that really anyone could do.

      • moo says:

you can tell she’s classically trained by the way she held her body, placed her feet, posture, etc in parts of the ad. the choreography however, isn’t classical. it’s cute, but it didn’t play up her skills. what stood out was her glowing smile at the end.

    • AntiSocialButterfly says:

MTE. There is a reason she is not pursuing a dance career, it seems.

    • FLORC says:

Her accomplishments in dance could not be met by average skills. Even with name and money.
There’s a bias here that can’t be overlooked. She’s not liked and is immediately judged before anything is seen. This is a trait we all have an use so it’s not easily denied.

      Antisocial
She’s transitioning to acting. Dancers have a peak age. It becomes tougher and tougher as you age to maintain your level of skill and wear and tear on body. Think of it like all the older ladies in Hollywood saying they can’t get work. Only a handful from a sea of people get those chances and roles.

      • Birdix says:

Lots of trained dancers looks silly in clubs–there’s a freedom that doesn’t come naturally after years of being told exactly what to do. She looks like so many dancers I know would in that situation–self-conscious, like she feels a bit silly.

  6. OSTONE says:

I guess plan B is working well for her! “If one doesnt snag the prince, become a celebrity!” #PippaTips. Anyway, I still think Chelsey Davy is the one that got away for Harry.

  7. SamiHami says:

Well, unlike most models, she is actually pretty so that’s a plus. And it’s a fun ad.

  8. Tiffany says:

The lesson learned here is not putting in the time and work to gain experience, it is to date someone high profile and it just comes to you.

I need to rethink my life choices since it seems so easy.

  9. Greek Chic says:

The era of nepotism and boring “fashion girls”…

  10. ds says:

Well I’m a super ESG fan so I loved they used their tune in the video. Yeeeey!!!! And it’s cute. She looks nice dancing. But I don’t find her attractive or anything special. That’s all I’ve got

  11. maybeiamcrazy says:

Why is she wearing the same Mulbery dress everywhere?

    • FLORC says:

she wore it twice. a black and a white. It’s a dress they’re pushing hard for spring. It’s so the dress is seen more.

  12. dr mantis toboggan says:

Wow. Dating a royal and now an acting career. This mulberry campaign is just a Bonas

  13. jane16 says:

I liked it. She is naturally gorgeous and reminds me of the London supermodels of the 60s, like Patti Boyd. There are youtubes of Patti dancing to music. Her hair is amazing.

  14. Bread and Circuses says:

I just about laughed when they got to the product. Lovely little commercial, charismatic lead actor, but an utterly blah handbag.

    • moo says:

have to admit, i didn’t realize it was about the handbag. was so focused o her dancing and her dress.

  15. Pretzelcake says:

Wow that was awkward dancing, I wouldn’t have guessed that she had any formal training at all. Loose through the core, no intent behind the movements….cringey. Looks good in the dress though and yeah…they should have picked a more colourful bag to go with the upbeat theme!

  16. taxi says:

Too much hair flinging. Dull handbag doesn’t stir me to spend upward of $1500. Needed a color pop as Pretzelcake & B & C said above.

  17. Bea says:

Do we really need an ad to sell this girl? Because nothing else of note was being advertised.. Completely useless commercial, blah at best model, pointless dance and an entire seasons worth of promo focused on ONE DRESS. I’m so underwhelmed.

  18. Dash says:

And we all thought Pippa Middleton would be the one to launch a succesful career off her royal connection…. She needs to take a few lessons from Cressy!
