Shia LaBeouf premieres ‘Man Down’ in Venice, says the film made him suicidal

Shia LaBeouf

Shia LaBeouf is at the Venice Film Festival to promote Man Down, in which he plays a U.S. Marine with post traumatic stress syndrome. Shia’s nothing if not dedicated to his work, and he dives into scary depths to go method. A few years ago while filming Fury with Brad Pitt, Shia slashed his own face and pulled a tooth out for no reason, other than to get into character. He’s also got some terrifying personal issues, but all I can visualize right now is how he wore a bag on his head and played the “I am not famous” game a few years ago. You see it too, right?

In Venice, Shia told reporters that filming Man Down was “like therapy” even though the movie made him feel suicidal. His character returns from a traumatic tour of duty in Afghanistan, and then he returns to find America (including his family) obliterated by an epidemic. Some excerpts:

“This is definitely the most difficult thing I’ve ever worked on, emotionally, which is why I had to do it with [Dito Montiel],” said LaBeouf of reuniting with his A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints director. “I needed a friend, otherwise you can’t get this vulnerable.”

When asked what the darkest point he had to go to was while making the movie, the incredibly candid 29-year-old actor replied, “Suicidal, and … you know … you try your hardest, you know? You jump onto some other train of thought, or some other passion, or fall in love with another creative process and find yourself somewhere else.”

Filming took place right after the period where Shia had his Cabaret meltdown and put on the #IAMSORRY art exhibit where he was raped. So yes, he had some stuff going on when he started making this movie. He’s always a mess, but that was a more traumatic period than usual.

Shia also said that he’ll only make movies with friends from now on. This means he won’t be making any movies with Seth Rogen, ever. I guess Seth is really upset and only figured out a few days ago that Shia blocked him on Twitter. You can see all of Seth’s profanity laced tweets right here. Last year, Seth mocked Shia’s meltdowns (because Seth is a bit of a troll), and I guess he didn’t expect Shia to notice.

He only is going to make movies with friends now? So I never have to hear about him ever again, because he will never be in a movie again, right?

  2. funcakes says:

I’m so over his big old bag of bullsh@t.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Ugh, me, too. No patience. I think he needs help and I hope he gets it, but I just can’t stand his whole act.

  3. Amanda says:

He’ll forever be a woman beater in my mind now so I just can’t enjoy his films

  4. V4Real says:

He actually looks alright clean shaven.

  5. Size Does Matter says:

I get the feeling everything he does is always going to be the most difficult thing he’s done, because difficult gonna difficult.

    • Keaton says:

Yes lol I think he’s a drama queen. He thrives off it. I think he might have some sort of personality disorder. But then alot of actors probably do!

      • Naya says:

Not a personality disorder, a mood disorder. Probably bipolar. I was watching Season 2 of Project Greenlight (the Affleck Damon reality show from a decade ago) and a sixteen year old Shia is already showing red flags. He is extremely revved up, so much so you may wonder if he is on coke. At 16 he is already veering towards method acting in a slightly disturbed way (his characters dad and his dad have a common drug history and Shia really mines that). Everyone on the production team is calling him a young Sean Penn or John Cusack but you also pick up that they are really saying that he is a mad genius.

I dunno, I felt like he was in a mildly manic state and over the years the poles between the mania and the depression have widened (as is expected with unmedicated bipolar). So his lows are really low now and the highs seem like pure crazy, and the method acting makes it worse because he is in effect mining a dangerous disorder as though it were just ordinary emotion.

I hear you Naya. I was a seat filler at the VMAs the year Lilo hosted and he was literally the only person who messed up and had to reshoot what he was saying, and then proceeded to drop the f bomb(!). “Oh, my f@ck up.”

    [wanking motion]

  7. Regina Phelange says:

He’s such a drama queen about everything.

  8. Lindy says:

Can he please just go the eff away now? He’s an entitled, no-talent piece of crap. He keeps trying to go for shock value with his outlandish interviews.

  9. vauvert says:

I am now actually thinning that he suffers from some form of mental illness. What he needs is intensive treatment and support from whatever friends he has left.

At the beginning of his career he seemed like a fun, if one note actor who essentially played himself – an arrogant, chip on the shoulder kind of guy. But his ranting interviews, his public meltdowns, his hobo image – he is too self destructive for a “regular” person. Not sure if he does drugs and whether he drinks too much, but there is certainly something wrong with him. Suicidal tendencies are not something to be amused by. I think the cries for attention in the form of al his lunatic behaviour are real.

    • Pandy says:

Agree. He could use some time on a couch and some prescribed meds.

    • I Choose Me says:

No. Shia has always had issues see Naya’s comment upthread. I really think he needs an evaluation. That last incident where he struck and threatened his ex girlfriend is very disturbing behaviour. I really think if he doesn’t get help he can seriously hurt himself or someone else.

  10. ds says:

I think he’s really talented, but also needs serious, professional help.

  11. Mia4S says:

Reviews for this are pretty messy. Also was anyone else from the cast there? Interesting that he’d be there on his own. Seems risky…or calculated?

  12. Shut up Shia, you’re wasting air!

  13. Danielle says:

I’ve never been impressed by his acting at all. He’s also weaselly looking and unattractive.

    • Josefa says:

This. My friends were all crazy about him on that Sia video. I understood the appeal – below the neck. He does have a great body. But his face is so ordinary and blah.

He’s a competent actor. He doesn’t ruin the movies he’s in but doesn’t contribute anything special, either. He went all method in Fury just to deliver the 4th or so best performance of the movie (and it’s not like the cast was particularly amazing.)

  14. FingerBinger says:

Seth Rogen must not have much going on if he’s upset Shia LaBeouf blocked him on twitter.

    • Lol! Agree. I mean, at least he didn’t tag him in the actual tweets (that I saw)….but if someone was going to dog me out on twitter, I’d block them too.

    • funcakes says:

Really? How desperate does that make him look that he even responded?
I would have just laughed and moved on. Besides he’s going to need Seth when Hollywood drop his a##. Which will be any day.

  15. I watched both parts of “Nymphomaniac”…….I thought the premise of the film was good, but the writing seemed so juvenile/treating the movie goers like we were all idiots…..the performances were good (the standout to me was Jamie Bell as K)….but Shia was THE WORST. He had a fake ass British accent (which completely distracted me), and he was playing himself (a douche).

  16. pretty says:

omg with this shaved head, he even more looks like Benzema. hahahah

  17. Jackson says:

He has an incredibly round head.
    That’s all I got.

  18. bns says:

If an actress pulled even half the sh*t he’s gotten away with she wouldn’t be working. He’s an ok actor, but he’s not *that* great. Hollywood needs to let it go.

  19. Ravensdaughter says:

He looks fit and sober. Perhaps he has taken stock after the Mia Goth incident.
    Seth Rogen is a troll.

  20. daniel says:

apparently he wasn’t suicidal enough, lol!
