Ben Affleck on Batman vs. Superman: ‘there is a ton of pressure on it’ to do well

Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice doesn’t come out until mid March of next year, so if we’re hearing about it now you can bet that the promotion lead-up will be insane. I’m really looking forward to some of Ben Affleck’s interviews, because he usually reveals a bit too much about his personal life. It’s like he just can’t help himself. Ben has a new interview with Vanity Fair, part of their cover story on the new Warner Bros CEO, Kevin Tsujihara. Warner Bros will release Batman v. Superman, Suicide Squad and Fantastic Beasts next year and there’s a lot of pressure on them to succeed following the box office disaster that has been the second half of this year. (They took some losses with The Man From U.N.C.L.E, Our Brand is Crisis and Jupiter Ascending among others, but there were much worse flops from other studios.)

Affleck talked about how great it was to work with Tsujihara and how Warner Bros is poised to hit it big with all their DC movies coming out. (Wonderwoman isn’t out until the summer of 2017, but I’d love to see that do well.) He also discussed the pressure that this film is under to succeed, and you wonder if he’s talking about just the film or about his career.

In case it wasn’t clear that expectations for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” are running extremely high at Warner Bros., star Ben Affleck put it in plain language.

“I think there is a ton of pressure on it,” Affleck said of the film, in which he plays Batman. “I mean I would be bulls—ting you to say there isn’t.”

Affleck said the press has had a lot to say about the struggles of many Warners’ films in 2015, but predicted that “Batman v Superman” will help launch a turnaround at the studio.

“You’ll see next year they are going to have a great year,” Affleck said. “They are now developing … probably the single greatest under-exploited IP asset in the entertainment business, the DC comic world. And now they have started to exploit that and you are going to see that blossom. And, when it does, it’s going to be massive.”

The Batman star praised Tsujihara for his deep involvement in “Batman v Superman,” which started with script meetings for the film.

“I was really impressed by that and by the intelligence of his notes, and the fact that he cared,” said Affleck. “It was not like some guys, especially at that level, where it would be, ‘We need a franchise movie … we just need a movie with the names ‘Batman’ and ‘Superman’ on it and it doesn’t matter what it is. For him, that wasn’t it. He was willing to take longer to make the movie to get it right to make it a movie of higher quality…”

The actor sounded both annoyed and accepting of the massive expectations that await the “Batman v Superman” debut.

“We are a very kind of instant gratification culture when it comes to analyzing the film business. And there is a lot of hyperbole involved,” Affleck said. “Nonetheless, there’s a lot of pressure on it. If it doesn’t do well, that will be extremely disappointing.”

But he said he isn’t sure what will be judged as success, concluding: “I leave that to the experts to decide.”

[From Warner Brothers]

For all you can say about Ben Affleck’s messy personal life, which is rumored to be “freaking out” executives at Warner Brothers, he knows how to play the game. He sounds professional, knowledgable and committed to his work. You can tell that he knows the business, does his homework and puts his time in. One of his movies won an Oscar for best picture. Even if this film fails, he’s not going away. He’s going to hustle and schmooze and do photo ops and strategic press leaks to try and ensure that he’s still in demand as an actor, as misguided as that may seem. (I mean he’s decent but his skill really seems to be in directing.) We’ll see if he can stick with the plan and keep his side pieces, gambling and drinking under control.

Hahaha, but seriously, what is going ON with this man’s appearance all of a sudden? Or is this his natural state? If that’s the case, I want all celebrities to default to ‘normal’ from now on when they’re not working or shilling for awards.

  2. LAK says:

His face in the set photos of his current film really freaks me out. Why does he look so doughy?

    • JenniferJustice says:

Something is going on. Either he’s been botoxing or he’s bloated from something. It doesn’t look like normal weight gain. It looks like water retention. I’m going with alcohol or coke bloat. And yeah, that suit is not flattering at all. It’s fitting like Johnny Depp’s latest attire – sloppy, wrinkly, and needs tailoring.

    • SNAP says:

No kidding, i want to use my rolling pin on him so bad after seeing his pics! I’m on Thanksgiving mode, and now i want yeast rolls…thanks Affleck…i need to eat yeast rolls like i need a hole on the head…

    • JenniferJustice says:

But don’t poke him in the belly like the Pilsbury Doughboy ’cause Affleck will probably cop a woody.

  3. Kate says:

He should really just stick to directing and cast himself in a small, unimportant role every now and then if he must.

He’s not a good actor, and as an actor he has no eye for good material. Even in his best films, it’s just him doing a better job of playing Ben Affleck. That’s the extent of his range, Ben Affleck showing up for the pay check, and Ben Affleck attempting to act.

If he just directed, he’d get far more respect and acclaim, and he could live the wasted at strip clubs at 10am lifestyle of his dreams with little to no blowback.

  4. Jayna says:

That’s because he is professional, knowledgeable and committed to the work. His personal life is messy, but I have always found many of his interviews are insightful about the filmmaking process and it always show his absolute passion for filmmaking and also desire to learn more from the directors he works with even, the way he analyzes what they do, like David Fincher. Even on the Batman movie he said he learned a lot watching the process when he wasn’t on set acting.

  5. Miss M says:

I agree with CB. He does come off professional and knowledgeable. That’s the impression I got watching project greenlight.

    • Lilacflowers says:

And while he may not be the best actor, he knows how to direct actors. He directed Amy Ryan, Jeremy Renner, and John Goodman to Oscar nominations. Other actors will seek out the opportunity to work with him. The three films he has directed have also done quite well. If he’s bringing things in on time, not over inflating budgets, creating product that gets critical praise, and makes money, studios won’t care about his divorce or how many games of poker he plays

  6. lila fowler says:

I can’t wait for Suicide Squad — it’s going to be huge for them. That and Silence are the two movies that I’m looking forward to most in 2016.

  7. ali.hanlon says:

I am hoping Wonder Woman bombs.

    The lead is crazy miscast.

    Suicide should do wiill

    • Bridget says:

If Wonder Woman bombs, that’s it. No 2nd chance on the character, and not only will it lessen the chances of any other movies led by female superheros, but it’ll also be attributed to women-aimed movies not selling in general. You still really want it to bomb?

  8. Candice says:

He is like 45 but no wrinkles so why janya not complain smooth face here?
I think the batman movie will suceed regardless of his situation somehow it seems like it unless some Change happen . I think he should also be greatful for jg the way she stay around. But that could be because of her own reason good family woman image is her first goal for her during and after the marriage crisis.

  9. Embee says:

I wonder if Ben suffers with bipolar disorder? He seems to cycle through moods, and to self-medicate with various addictive behaviors. I am close to several people who manage bipolar disorder and his expression in the first and third pics looks like when my friends are struggling to appear “normal” whilst also struggling with an episode related to their mental health. Not that you can diagnose mental health by someone’s expression but given everything else… And that may be why Jennifer Garner tolerates his behavior. She may understand that he has an illness.

    • kimbers says:

He struggles with addiction issues that were public years ago, but now he doesnt want the public to be know bc it’s bad for his brand.

  10. Dorky says:

Omg I thought that was Zack Galifiankis in the thumbnail.

  11. MeatsaMatsa says:

My eyes said to my brain, Rosie O’Donnell.

  12. Susan says:

Maybe some Miralax is needed. I get that face when I’m backed up.

  13. Cyn says:

I watch the Suicide Squad trailer at least once a week. I am crazy excited for it. I could care less about the rest though.
