Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab at the SAGs: gorgeous or boringly pretty?

Rachel McAdams won a SAG last night as part of the ensemble for Spotlight. I’m happy about that! I loved Spotlight and I think the ensemble was easily the best of the year. I’m still a little bit confused about Rachel getting individual nominations for her performance, just because… I don’t know, the role wasn’t that showy or noteworthy, she was just part of a team effort that did a great job. But… I enjoy the fact that Rachel is bringing it for her awards season, as she should. Rachel wore this Elie Saab gown which I think is really pretty. People diss Elie Saab as obvious awards-show stuff – so much tulle, so many sparkles – but I think the house of Elie Saab doesn’t get enough credit for making flattering, pretty dresses. Not everything has to be “challenging fashion” you know? Sometimes women just want to look pretty and sparkly.

As the red carpet was winding down and I was looking through the fashion photos, it occurred to me: Helen Mirren was one of my favorite looks of the night. Helen’s styling team is really amazing these days, right? Helen wore this silvery, slippery Jenny Packham and she looked absolutely gorgeous. Her body looks fantastic, her hair is fluffy & cute, and she just looked amazing. Sigh…

Are you kidding me? I love Rachael McAdams dress.. This is a favorite for the night.

  2. Nutballs says:

    Helen looks like a goddess.

  3. Carmen says:

Dame Helen finally got it right. Usually wears something comfortable and dowdy looking that does nothing for her but this time she knocked it out of the ballpark. Gorgeous!

MacAdams? Meh… Nothing to write home about.

  4. CornyBlue says:

Helen Mirren is just killing it damn! She could give most of the women a run for their money.
Did not like anything about McAdams though.

  5. ichsi says:

Rachel’s dress looks like the glammed up version of something my mother wears to the opera. Helen is gorgeous but that’s not news.

  6. Sisi says:

As a solo look, I don’t like Rachels dress, but when she stands with all the other people from Spotlight, it is an amazing ensemble and they look cohesive. So that is very fitting considering the SAG they won. And I think Rachel is the type of person who’s attentive to what is required of her on the carpet and adjusts accordingly. So in the end: good choice of dress.

Helen looks amazing. More ladies should try sleeves like that on the carpet and the V-neck is just perfect.

  7. taxi says:

Rachel & Helen both looked terrific. The fitted bodice and bare back are a nice change from all the slashed V fronts & midriff holes that we’ve been seeing too often.

    • Jib says:

I agree that she looks great! Elie Saab gets beat up for being “pretty dresses” but if I was at one of these events, I’d pick “pretty dress” over a Chanel or Versace monstrosity every time!!!

  8. Minxx says:

Rachel’s dress is fantastic! I usually don’t like Elie Saab but this dress is perfection, I love everything about it. And it fist Rachel like a glove, perfect hair and makeup too. The back of the dress is adorable too.
Helen Mirren is a goddess, seriously. Easily the best of the night. And I love the fact that she does not colour her hair too much, she looks fabulous and classy.

  9. Jayna says:

Helen Mirren is 70 years old and is rocking it. Stunning from head to toe, hair, makeup, earrings, gown, figure, and on.

I loved Rachel’s gown, but the blonde hair color is so unflattering.

  10. Tdub30 says:

    Rachel’s dress is lovely.

Helen Mirren = #bodygoals. My goodness, she looks fantastic.

  11. Lisa says:

Elie Saab’s long dresses are boring. It’s always a safe choice to make. It’s like the wearer is saying “I don’t want to stand out and I don’t want to take a chance and be the worst dressed…soooo I’ll wear Elie”

Don’t get me wrong, Rachel’s dress is beautiful. But not THAT beautiful.

    • Bridget says:

Not to mention the reliance on nude netting. Sometimes Elie Saab knocks it out on the pretty gowns, but sometimes they’re truly terrible. Just because they’re sparkly doesn’t mean that they’re always pretty.

  12. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I would love Rachel’s dress if the bottom was more filled in with the black. As it is, the top looks too heavy for the bottom. But she looks beautiful in it, and I think she feels beautiful.

    Helen, I worship you.

  13. Sarah01 says:

Helen looks incredible, love her style she always balances between classy with a little twist.

  14. Lucy says:

Both of them looked fantastic! Great gowns, great hair, everything was perfect! I would totally wear Rachel’s gown.

  15. Alex says:

They both looked fantastic. I agree not every carpet has to be some fashion envelope pushing statement. Esp since its SAGs. Rachel looked pretty and I love the color and cut she has currently. Helen Always looks amazing so that’s nothing new.

  16. John says:

    Rachel is perfection!

  17. Murphy says:

Yeah Helen Mirren looks incredible, brava

  18. Zaytabogota says:

    Wow, Helen is magnificent!

  19. Amanda G says:

Rachel’s dress would have been perfect if it weren’t for shoulders being covered. Too much.

  20. Cupcake says:

Helen Mirren is my winner for night with that look, A+ perfection!! Her stylist should get a raise.

Rachel’s look is sweet and she looks nice, but not special to me. C+

  21. kai says:

Is Rachel the only woman in this movie? I’m so tired of it.

    Helen looks INSANE. Woah.

  22. KBeth says:

I love Rachel’s dress, except there is too much material dragging on the bottom.
    Helen Mirren is a stunner!

  23. ell says:

i normally like elie saab’s dresses, many are so pretty but not boring, but hey this one’s boring. also it looks like a valentino gone wrong.

  24. Mikeyangel says:

Helen looks absolutely amaze-balls! No comparison. She obviously follows the keeping 5-10 extra pounds on her rule for when you are older. Her body looks amazing, those few extra pounds fill her out in the perfect places and it helps so much with wrinkles! She is not too thin, just absolutely perfect. She is so graceful!

  25. kri says:

Rachel looks really good. But really, let’s just give it ALL to Helen Mirren and pack up. That woman is outrageously perfect. She just kills me.

  26. Pansy says:

I want to look like Helen when I grow up!! I’m a brunette–is she grey or blond? I need her to be grey so I can do that too! The shift from dark to grey is so hard to figure out. How do you do it without either looking like you’re a hag with hair you won’t keep up or starkly going from dyed dark one day to “look guys I’m grey!” the next?

    • Classy and Sassy says:

I heard you gradually go lighter and lighter until the grey and colour are hard to differentiate, making the jump to grey much less noticeable.

  27. Joy says:

Helen deserved her own solo post. She is flawless, age appropriate, and perfectly styled. #1 look of the evening.

  28. Melibea says:

Rachel was one of my favorites, very classy!

  29. Reece says:

    Hot Dame!!!
    I’ll let myself out.

  30. Lucy2 says:

I’m not sure that I like Rachel’s dress, but it is very interesting and striking.
    Helen looks amazing as always.

  31. Rockin Robin says:

    Dame Helen!!!!!!!

  32. serena says:

Madame Helen is for sure the best dressed.
I didn’t really like Rachel’s dress though.. boring and too big, also the nude colour-effect beneath was awful.

  33. shannon says:

Two best dressed of the night IMO.

  34. Holmes says:

I was going to say that I’d like to look as good as Dame Helen when I’m her age, but heck, I’d like to look that good NOW.

Rachel looks a hot mess, as per usual.
