Bella Hadid is brunette to look different from Gigi ‘it’s a good separation’

Following in the footsteps of mom Yolanda Foster and sister Gigi, model Bella Hadid graces the cover of Allure magazine’s March issue. The 19-year-old donned a cute plaid mini dress for the cover shoot, which she promoted to her 2.5 million followers on her Instagram page, captioning the photo, “Smirking on the March issue of @allure shot by the legendary @patrickdemarchelierofficial ❤️Thank you.”

Bella, who is definitely on her way to being one of the world’s top models, with shoots in Vogue, W, Elle and other international publications, talked to the magazine about her career and why she decided to go to the dark side and dye her blonde lock to a deep brunette hue. Here are some highlights from the interview:

On walking the runway for Chanel: “I know Chanel is just a show, and all the girls I was with, they’d been doing it forever. It’s been my dream ever since I was young.”

On photo shoots: “They put me in a boy wig or a bra and underwear. I’m like, ‘I have no happy medium here!'”

On why she went brunette: “I just have a darker personality. And my sister being blonde and me being brunette, it’s a good separation. I put a blonde wig on and think it would be fun to go back, but I’m happy with my hair. Blondes are so angelic. My sister can get away with anything.”

On her image: “I’m not trying to be this cool girl. If you’re trying to be something you’re not, it’s slowly going to bite you in the butt.”

In other news, Bella, who was recently named one of the faces for Marc Jacobs’ spring and summer lines, is reportedly back with singer The Weeknd (government name Abel Tesfaye). The couple, who “took a break” over the holidays are taking the next step in their relationship and moving in together. Could Bella be walking down the aisle soon? A source close to the couple tells Hollywood Life, “They’re so loved up they’ve even discussed the idea of marriage, having kids and growing old together. Abel just really gets Bella, they trust each other and have such a positive spin on life together. Their friends already joke they are like a married couple.”

From The Weeknd’s recent behavior, I really want to channel my inner Whoopi from Ghost and tell Bella, “You in danger, girl.” Why are all of these young starlets and models so eager to race down the aisle? But, hey, that’s none of my business. I do dig the brunette hair on Bella. I dyed my hair from blonde to brunette when I graduated college, as I thought people would take me more seriously (it didn’t work). It works for her – and if her goal was to be a completely separate entity from her sister, she certainly achieved it.

It seems, everybody can be a model now…

    • Belle says:

True words! I am not taking away from the fact that she and her sister are gorgeous. But being a model, well, yea, if you wish it, you can have it apparently.

      • RhoSue says:

Well, you have you have a celebrity parent or two. Even if they are famous for nothing like a vapid reality show etc. I have never watched any reality show and never will. Half these young girls have nothing going for them much less an education. They will never know if people really like them or just want 15 minutes. Sad, really. These Hadid girls are no prettier than the average girl on the street.

    • ell says:

bella is gorgeous though. if we talk kendall jenner i completely agree with you, but both bella and gigi (especially bella) stand out with their looks. they’d be modelling even if their parents weren’t famous.

      • Locke Lamora says:

Gigi is perfect for VS, she has that blonde bombshell look. Bella looks interestimg, she fits in with other models on HC shows. Kendall is just bland.

      • CornyBlue says:

Yep! Gigi’s fireman outfit for VS gave me the tingles. She looked hot hot hot

      • teacakes says:

yeah, I saw Gigi on a Guess ad at my local mall before I even knew her name, and my first thought was that this was the first blonde model I’d seen in ages whose face I wouldn’t forget two seconds after turning away from the picture. Bella has a more interesting, off-kilter kind of look that’s perfect for high fashion – nose job or no, she’s gorgeous.

I think their parents are certainly a reason why they blew up, but Gigi/Bella’s look is a lot less budget than the Kardashian crowd. Like the plastic surgery is less obvious (Bella still has a fairly prominent nose) and they don’t look tacky, which is surprising considering they got a start on reality tv.

  2. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Brunette looks pretty on her. I think both of those girls are beautiful.

    • Mimz says:

They truly are, and I don’t think nepotism is everything in the modeling world. I think it opens doors, yes, but they won’t become supermodels without the hard work. At least I believe that with these Hadid Girls. And I love both Gigi and Bella, they are stunning and versatile (especially bella).
can’t wait to see what Kaia Gerber and Lily Rose Depp bring to the table. Kaia is a carbon copy of her mom!

      • ell says:

lily rose depp is average looking and very short. how on earth could she be a model? that’s exactly what people mean when they say nepotism. it’s not nepotism for bella and gigi because they’re gorgeous, but the others you mention really aren’t.

      • Locke Lamora says:

Lily Rose has a really pretty face ( lovely cheekbones), but she is very short. Kaia is also short, if I’m not mistaken, and has a very generic face. She doesn’t stand out. Besides, the supermodel era is over and models these days are more interesting and less conventionally beautiful ( thank god). Those two would never model if they weren’t celebrity kids.

      • pf says:

Kaia looks just like her dad RandE Gerber. Maybe people don’t see it because RandE and Cindy are similar-looking with brown hair and brown eyes. But yeah, Kaia and Lily-Rose as models, that’s just pure nepotism. Most people don’t know who the hell Yolanda Foster is, but they sure know about Johnny Depp.

      • Mimz says:

@ell – I know KG and LRD are short, but photographic modeling is also a great career. I separated them from the category of GH and BH because they are still super young, and super new to the business. but I do think they photograph beautifully. To me, LRD and KG aren’t ordinary looking at all, but being daughters of who they are certainly opens doors for them.

And @pf – I didn’t know who Yolanda Foster was until recently, but I knew and liked the models before.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

Yeah, I think they are gorgeous and wqould be models even without their famous mom. Bella in particular i striking, just so unusual looking. Gigi is more girl-next-door but very pretty too.

      • Calcifer says:

Bella really does it for me, she has this mysterious beauty, with her rather long face, green eyes and pale skin. She reminds me a lot of my all-time favorite, Carla Bruni, when she was young. Not perfect by far, but far more interesting as a result.

      • TreadStyle says:

        My thoughts too glimmerbunny!

      • dAsh says:

This. They’re both good looking and tall so they kind of fit in the modeling world. And besides, Gigi has been a model since she was 2. Gigi is the cute, innocent looking one while Bella is the hot, seductive looking sister. I still think she and JLaw could pass up sisters. I just saw that Gigi interview on Michael & Kelly and had no idea Gigi was taking Criminal psychology in college and had to drop out because she can’t balance the modeling gig and school.

      • mayamae says:

        @dAsh,

Gigi was a student for about five seconds. Her father stressed he wanted her to get an education, but Yolanda almost immediately told her that she had to do modeling while she was still young, and education was secondary. They moved her to an NYC apartment that was absolutely huge, because Yolanda said all the partying in the dorms would disturb Gigi’s beauty sleep and impact her modeling. Bella was moved to NYC when she was not quite eighteen, and got her own large (though not quite as lovely) apartment. I want Mohamed Hadid to adopt me.

  3. lower-case deb says:

she looks like a happy soul, but why is “Dead-Eye Moody” the go-to choice of face for the red carpet & runway. is that supposed to be a “fierce face”?

  4. Kate says:

Am I alone in thinking she’s way more beautiful than her sister? Gigi’s gorgeous when she’s all done up like a living doll, but with no make-up she has such a baby face. Bella’s stunning to me, and a far better model.

  5. Sara says:

I like my models found in malls and with a good rags to riches story. These Hadid and Jenner children bore me.

    • Locke Lamora says:

But it’s not just them. Most current it models have, if not famous, at least very rich parents. That’s how Cara and Suki Whatsherface got modeling gigs. Although Cara is very photogebic.

I remember reading an interview with Natalija Vodianova and how she remebered the food she ate on her first ever plane ride. She is so stunning, but there was something so human about that story that made her so much more endearing.

      • lower-case deb says:

do you thibk that their life experiences actually give them the depth and charisma? i mean, sure they just walk the catwalk like everyother model, but i find that the standout ones do have that spark in their eyes and pop in their gestures that have nothing to do with external aesthetics or mere deportment lessons but actually lived experience.

Tracy Norman, for instance. if she’s serving fierce you better believe. even Audrey Hepburn.

    • Sticks says:

      Me too, Sara.

  6. Sb says:

She looks like Katniss Everdine. Giggles

    • detritus says:

She looks like brunette Jennifer Lawrence mixed with a tiny bit of Liv Tyler.

Don’t get my wrong both girls are beautiful. Boring, not unique, nepotism hires with all the beauty wealth and youth brings.

It makes me sad that all these girls of the rich and famous want to be models. They have all the opportunity for education and start up Acura but very few of them are entrepreneurs other than managing their own brand. Very few of them run charities or provide public service.
They prefer to be known for being beautiful rather than useful because that’s what’s valued today.

  7. CornyBlue says:

I think she looks high fashion whereas her Gigi looks like a commercial model. Which isn’t a slight on either of them. I really do not care about the nepotism factor, I never took modeling seriously as a job, nor has anyone around me ever tried pursuing it. It must be frustuating being a starting model with no connections now though.

    • Brea says:

Exactly what I said! It must be SO frustrating to see the various Jenners and Hadids getting high profile campaigns because they have millions of followers on Instagram.

      • CornyBlue says:

But modeling is about selling ? It is not fair but I can see why brands go for people who already have a built in consumer market on them. It is economically optimal for them.

      • Bridget says:

@CornyBlue: That’s exactly it. Modelling is about selling products, and when you hire a Hadid or a Jenner you’re not just getting your regular ad circulation, but it’s also being picked up by gossip blogs and seen by their Instagram followers. It sounds ridiculous, but social media reach has an enormous value.

  8. Aanisah says:

That nose job worked out in her favour, even if its high up on the list of “obvious nose jobs” alongside Elizabeth Olsen’s.

    • ell says:

tbf, many models have either nose jobs or boob jobs at the start of their careers. it’s something the agencies would often recommend you to do (i did some modelling as a teen).

    • gatinha says:

Lol….right? Dyed her hair to separate herself from her sister, but paid for the same nose as Gigi!

  9. platypus says:

I like how they used photoshop to make her nose not look like it’s been photoshopped onto her face.

    • Ellie says:

The nose job is all I see when I look at her, besides her long face and jaw. Which, I don’t care if she had a nose job, but someone on a thread earlier this week pointed out that it looks like she has two nose bridges and I can’t unsee it. I’m also not sure I believe her hair is as blonde as her sister’s naturally — I’ve see old photos of her with it dishwater blonde/light brown, and I’d bet that’s more her natural color than golden blonde.

  10. Locke Lamora says:

The Weeknd is such a creepy asshole, I don’t understand what a girl like Bella is doing with him.

  11. Eleonor says:

She reminds me of Megan Fox, before she started messing with her face.

  12. Brea says:

I think she’s gorgeous and much more “high fashion” than her sister who can photograph well but can’t walk a runway to save her life. I wonder how frustrated the other models feel when they see these girls with families in the show business who get campaigns out of popularity and Instagram.

  13. Jayna says:

Well, she must have started dying her hair young. Her hair has been dark since her mom starred on RHOB beginning three and a half years ago when Bella was sixteen or fifteen.

  14. Tania says:

I think both sisters are very beautiful but I don’t think Bella looks like a model, with respect to her proportions. Gigi has legs for days and is very thin. She has that very rare, model look, whereas Bella has more “regular girl” proportions. I’m not calling her fat, I’m sure she is very thin, but her body just doesn’t look like that of a runway model. I’m sure she could still get a ton of work though!

    • Jayna says:

I agree. It seems there like there has been a big push to make her an “it” girl lately, like her sister. I always worry she is going to start starving herself to try to have more of a long-lines look to her body, trying to change her build. I hope not. I’d hate to see her suffer an eating disorder to try to achieve that.

  15. Skins says:

    Ah, the silver spoon sisters

  16. cgoeri says:

Why does she look so different before her nose job? Did she get an eye lift and lips too? She looks like she had two noses glued together, the tip and the bridge dont fit.

Pretty girl but its kinda weird that people are hailing her as a stunning beauty. I thought she was cuter before the surgery. Now she looks kinda robotic and very high fashion, which is kinda bland at this point. I think im just tired of being bombarded by the same “look”.

  17. Sarah01 says:

She looks very pretty with dark hair or lighter hair, these sisters have some beautiful genes. I think Kendal is very pretty too, she has the model look. She can do way better than the weekend. I completely agree with her being yourself is best.

  18. serena says:

Seems like she was not so subtly throwing some shade at her sister, lol.

  19. Cee says:

She’s stunning and dark hair suits her. I can’t picture her with blonde hair.

  20. livan says:

I think that Bella really has “it”, i enjoy her pictures!

  21. Ally says:

Bella always looks so sad 🙁 She is a stunning girl but seems to have been pushed into modelling by her annoying mother. She probably wishes she could just go back to art school and live under a rock.

  22. Dani8 says:

Her mother has pushed into modeling big time. Sorry but I can’t unsee that nose job. Every time I look at her it is all I see. I wish someone with no connections would take this modeling world by storm but obviously these are the times we live in.

  23. Felice. says:

How could she have 2 million followers? She seemed so unknown to the mainstream for a while.

  24. Daria Morgendorffer says:

I think both Bella and Gigi have great bodies but there is nothing special about them on the runway.

As a matter of fact, Gigi’s runway walk is so bad that there are tons of YouTube videos featuring montages of her walking. She is about as graceful as a linebacker. She is regularly criticized for her inability to walk in a straight line.

These girls are beautiful, but there is no denying that they skyrocketed to the top due to connections.

  25. Jana says:

If she truly wanted to differentiate herself from Gigi, she should have kept her original nose.

  26. Dani says:

Yep, she dyed her hair to look different than her sister. But, what about the nose job? Cheek fillers? Lip injections? Dark hair doesn’t change all of that, too.
