Kirsten Dunst & Garrett Hedlund have broken up after four years together

wenn20184320

Every few months, there’s a rumor about Kirsten Dunst and Garrett Hedlund. They were together for four years and their relationship was quiet and low-key, but they didn’t hide it. The last time we checked, there was a rumor that Garrett had proposed. But probably not. Because now every media outlet is getting the nod that Garrett and Kiki are over. Us Weekly, People Magazine, E! News and more all reported the news around the same time last night.

Kirsten Dunst and Garrett Hedlund are no longer together. The couple called it quits after four years together, PEOPLE confirms. The pair met on the set of On the Road in 2010. Earlier this year, Dunst, 33, and Hedlund, 31, were noticeably together at the Golden Globes and also attended Fox’s award show party.

Back in November, the Fargo actress got candid about what she looks for in a boyfriend, telling The Edit that she’s “dated men who had more of a feminine side, and it didn’t work.”

Dunst also revealed she’s ready to start a family. “I want to continue acting, but I also want to have kids,” she shared. “I think I’ll be ready to have them in two years or something.”

[From People]

Judging from Kirsten’s interviews over the years, I think she always viewed herself as a “traditional” sort of woman, as in she wanted to be married and she wanted to have a baby, in that order. I always thought she was waiting for Garrett to propose, and maybe he just never got around to it. In any case, I’m sad about this. I ended up really liking them as a couple and I thought they were good for each other. Sadface!

I call first dibs! I’ve loved him since forever!!

  2. mkyarwood says:

This is why she was perfect in Mona Lisa smile. She wanted the tradition, but she’s a spitfire. I bet it’s hard to maintain a relationship with her.

  3. Jess says:

I’m gutted about this :-( I loved them as a couple.

    • PurpleRain says:

I feel the same way. He’s such a hunk and I always liked her so I’m really sad they broke up. It’s really too bad because I thought they were great together.

  4. Lizzie McGuire says:

It’s the start of the breakups in Hollywood…

I like them because I didn’t know anything about them, if that makes any sense. They supported each other but they weren’t in your face claiming love is real or posting every other 2 seconds photos of themselves on Instagram. So sad…that being said Garrett I’m single hiii!

    • Naya says:

Yep, its not even summer yet. I wonder if this year will rival last years record summer of divorce.

      • Lizzie McGuire says:

Ohh last years was intense & so gossip worthy. Well weren’t several couples supposedly divorcing this spring? One of them is Drew Barrymore/Chanel guy, who are the others?

Edit: Laura Wasser, that’s the divorce lawyer handling most of the divorces. Apparently she’s the one to responsible for the summer of breakups. Damn Laura.

  5. Jegede says:

Yes Kirsten has been open about how much she wants marriage & a family.

Me thinks Hedlund was not on board.

I don’t think this is their first break up, so it would be best for her if she just cut her losses.

  6. Kitten says:

Booo! They were so cute together….
I want love for Kiki so badly, but mostly I want to help Garrett get over his heartache in the dirtiest way imaginable.

  7. Lex says:

I’ve always had an irrational dislike for her so I’m pleased about this news. I’ve had a crush on him since Four Brothers, so we’ll hello there Garrett.

  8. shannon says:

Only they know, but It would not surprise me if they broke up because she wanted to get married and he didn’t.

    • WTW says:

I’m pretty sure he actually did propose. I remember watching “The Talk” a year or so ago, and she was asked about her engagement and discussed it.

  9. Miss M says:

    I don’t feel sad. I am a horrible person…

  10. kai says:

Have to roll my eyes at her ideas of “feminine” and “masculine”. In another interview, she said she likes men to pay for dinner and open doors. Because that’s masculine, apparantly. Okay.

    • WinnieCoopersMom says:

Maybe she just meant traditional. Nothing wrong with wanting that…but I agree, being a traditional gentleman does not define masculinity.

  11. sofie says:

He has the sexiest voice. Loved him in On the road.

    • Kitten says:

YES. His voice is EVERYTHING and he was the sex in On The Road.

Voice is my number-one-most-important on the Big List of Superficial Attributes.

  12. Lucy says:

Noooooo :( well, at least he’s single now! I do hope both are doing okay.

  13. OSTONE says:

Lainey made some comments about “lifestyle” and Garrett waiting for a costar who didn’t want him.. Ideas?

    • Kitten says:

Ugh really? If it’s Makenzie Leigh I’ll be upset..
Well at least we know it’s not K Stew.

    • Hudson Girl says:

Yeah, sounds like he likes to smoke up and she now prefers the more chemical compounds- both are common in LA- so no drama there.

I am SO curious about who (Lainey thinks anyway) he is interested in.

    • ell says:

rooney mara? kristen stewart? they worked together twice.

      • kai says:

My gut tells me it’s Leighton Meester. Not that my gut knows any of these people.

      • teacakes says:

Leighton is (afaik) happily married, with a baby. I would have believed this five years ago but not now.

      • kai says:

Yes, but wouldn’t it make sense that the person is taken? That’s why he’s waiting?

      • teacakes says:

I’d believe it if there were any rumbles about unhappiness between Leighton and Adam, but they’re very low-key so it doesn’t make sense for Garrett to be waiting on her if her current relationship is as solid as it looks. The ‘waiting’ bit implies there’s some chance at a shot with whoever the costar is.

    • Als says:

Yeah, when people say stuff like ‘I’m not ready to settle down’ it’s usually code for ‘I have my eyes on someone else’.

      • qwerty says:

Or they don;’t wanna settle down cause they don’t feel like promising to spend the remaining 50 years of their life with one person?

    • shutterbug99 says:

      Gotta be Goop or Lilo.

      • teacakes says:

who’d want to date Lilo? Other than some wet-behind-the-ears daddy’s boy?

      • shutterbug99 says:

        Kidding.

I have no idea who the co-star is. If Blair Waldorf didn’t seem so happy with Seth Cohen she would have been my first bet. Who knows?

    • Miss M says:

      Louise Bourgoin… That’s my bet!

I ruled out C. Mulligan, Amy Adams, KStew, and Rooney Mara (She is insufferable, so I hope not…)

      • theotherCleo says:

Louise Bourgoin has a boyfriend and she’s pregnant. I think she’s seven or eight months along.

      • Miss M says:

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I didn’t know. Thank you!
Is this Kstew?! Who he has worked twice?! He might have some hope…

    • M.A.F. says:

Wow. I didn’t read her post as a blind item. I read it as he will just find his new girlfriend on his next project; that he has a thing for his co-stars.

    • ElsieIrish says:

Elizabeth Moss. Hasn’t she been in two movies with him recently and she is about the same age.

    • Shaunna says:

Kristen was in rehab a few years ago. I thought of it when “lifestyle” was mentioned as a possible reason for the split.

  14. Samtha says:

Aw, they were so cute together. I really liked them as a couple.

  15. GreenieWeenie says:

poooooo I wanted them to get married and have babies.

  16. Jeo says:

A few weeks ago Kirsten was seen out and about sharing a cigarette with the actor that played her husband in Fargo. Going by the photos they looked close if you get my drift so it may or may not have something to do with their break up.

    • KB says:

It’s funny you say that, she said she gained weight for that role by staying in eating pizza and watching Friday Night Lights which starred Jesse Plemons (the guy who played her husband on Fargo).

  17. ell says:

i actually like her more than i like him, but yeah, they were cute and low key together.

  18. Don't kill me I'm French says:

I just hope that this breakup will be painful for her than the one with Jake Guyllenhal.( it almost destroyed her )

It is interesting how some commentaries blame her or are happy because Garrett is single .Really interesting when you compare with Drew Barrymore’s divorce .

    • teacakes says:

      yeah, I noticed that too.

also, I am surprised so many people are so into Garrett. Don’t get me wrong, he’s handsome but never struck me as exceptionally appealing, not like a Hiddles or even one of the Marvel Chrises.

    • knower says:

Jake and her weren’t together sexually. Jake is closeted – she was one of his beards, like Taylor Swift.

      • shutterbug99 says:

If Kiki was a beard in that relationship, I’m pretty sure she didn’t know about it.

      • KB says:

        lol I’m with Shutterbug

      • ell says:

this is so not true. don’t tell me there are people who still believe that nonsense? when that blind came out at first they talked about a bisexual man, and bisexuals have relationships with both men and women, no need to beard. then the monosexuals started to push the whole ‘then he must be gay!!’ thing on him, like always, because apparently us bisexuals are a myth lol.

sorry about the rant, but i can’t believe there are still people around who believed that story. it was ridiculous.

      • KB says:

But Ted Casablancas and Perez Hilton said it, ell! It must be true!

  19. shutterbug99 says:

    Sadness!

I love Kiki and I really liked these two together. I feel like lately she’s really wanted to get married and have babies. Maybe he didn’t want the same things? We’ll probably never know. At least Kiki has her cat.

Lainey certainly seems to know something – and she should spill! What is the ‘smoke and compounds’ reference all about? A reference to drugs? And who is the co-star??? So many questions!

Edit: Maybe the co-star is Goop! :D

  20. teacakes says:

Shame, they seemed like a nice couple who genuinely enjoyed being together. Hope they’re both happy, and that Kiki’s career resurgence continues (hopefully without too much of the ‘compounds’ Lainey refers to).

I’ve always thought she was insanely talented but was never given enough credit for how good she was (compared to the kind of plaudits say, Natalie Portman got) simply because of her image as this blonde, bubbly girl who did lots of comedies – not exactly prime Oscar bait. Anyway she’s seemed like she was much happier in her post-Spiderman, post-rehab age so I hope she remains in that good place.

    • Kitten says:

YES! You are spot-on with your assessment of Kirsten. I find her immensely talented but so underrated.

    • Div says:

She is so talented and deserves to be snagging Oscar worthy roles. Alas, Hollywood is kind of ageist to anyone over 30 and as you said she was already working against the notion of not being a “serious” actress because of her former bubbly teen roles.

I really do not want to believe that blind……but I remember that back in the day her rehab stint was allegedly for a host of problems (including coke and alcohol) even though they originally tried to sell it for exhaustion or depression. She later alluded to it actually being about drugs, etc….Anyway, she’s been photographed drinking post-rehab and if you formerly had a problem with alcohol….well it is not the greatest idea. I hope Lainey is wrong but she also has a somewhat decent track record with the blinds and when you factor in that she still drinks…..:(. Anyway, here’s to hoping she is or gets sober and is happy.

    • Miss M says:

I like her too and I think she is very talented.

    • Mango says:

Yes, underrated because she’s never (to my knowledge) played a Oscar-bait role. She chooses complex characters and she’s subtle. Very good actress. Can’t even mention Natalie Portman in the same sentence.

      • teacakes says:

let’s be real, the praise Portman gets is all the afterglow of one very good child performance – Leon – and then her looks and image as the ‘brainy’ serious actress with good grades who went to Harvard and does Serious Movies.

(though she plays them all as some variety of ingenue with crying face, and butchers all her franchises and stray attempts at comedy)

    • paleokifaru says:

I’ve always really liked her too. Drop Dead Gorgeous is one of my faves. She seemed really happy with this guy (sorry! I don’t really know who he is!) so I’m bummed on her behalf.

    • Kath says:

I agree. I saw her in some teen drama years ago, and there was a bit where she gets weepy and emotional – and my God, did she elevate that material. She’s a hugely underrated actress who should be getting the parts that the Maras are getting (despite a lack of talent, IMO).

      • teacakes says:

seriously, she SHOULD be getting a look-in at all those prestige parts that some far inferior actresses in her age group are being sent.

She’s a fine dramatic and comedic actress, which is really rare in Hollywood, but it took Cannes to recognise what Hollywood couldn’t. And in a far better movie than anything that’s been nominated for a BP Oscar in the last decade.

  21. Starkiller says:

He irritates me. He’s always trying to look intense, but he just looks constipated. Also, what is that growing on his face? I’m sure she can do much better.

  22. JenniferJustice says:

I have had a crush on Garrett since he played Brad Pitt’s nephew/cousin in Troy. He was blonde in that movie. Bummed he and Kiki aren’t together anymore. I loved them as a couple – probably one of the very few grounded, pleasant, non-irritating couples in Hollywood. Poop!

  23. SM says:

Why is that every time hollywood non married couples break up the first assumption is that the female wanted family and babies and the male is against being tied down? I saw him in interviews a couple of times and while being hot and having a sexy voice and acting skills and all that, he didn’t strike me as particularly bright but as someone who is polite and raised on traditional values. When Kiki started talking about the gender roles and women beeing wifes and homemakers I had a feeling she is adapting to him and his traditional outlook on life. So my guess is there was some other factors that contributed to the break up

    • MAC says:

I think she did an interview including babies in it and Celebitchy covered the interview???
      So its not an assumption

      She was great in Melancholia

  24. Joanie says:

If you haven’t seen Kiki’s performance in Lars Von Trier’s ‘Melancholia,’ I highly recommend it. She’s a very underrated actress and Garrett is very overrated if you ask me.

  25. Ferdinand says:

As a gay man, I’m happy Garrett is free again. Having said that, there’s no chance at all. So it makes me kind of sad. I always rooted for these two and I was expecting beautiful children of them.

Too bad. Hopefully they’ll work things out.

  26. what's inside says:

Boy, does she have a track record of fails. What is wrong with her?

    • Kath says:

Seriously? She’s only 30 or so. Fails? Not every relationship is meant to last a lifetime.
