Tom Hiddleston attended the WH Correspondents’ Dinner with Carrie Fisher

During Barack Obama’s presidency, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner has become the biggest DC-meets-Hollywood events ever. I’m sure it was pretty Hollywood-friendly when Bill Clinton was in office too, but it definitely feels like more celebrities – and younger celebrities – make the trek to DC for the Nerd Prom these days. For Pres. Obama’s final appearance at the WHCD, tons of celebrities came out Michelle Dockery, Carrie Fisher, Kendall Jenner, Emma Watson, Bernie Sanders, Morgan Freeman, the cast of Scandal, the cast of Spotlight, Helen Mirren (she sat with Joe Biden!), Damian Lewis, Will Smith and Jada, and as you can see, Tom Hiddleston. Hiddles was the guest of The Guardian, and seemingly Carrie Fisher’s date for the event. He even had to pose with Carrie’s dog Gary! I hope Hiddles enjoyed himself. Do you think he’ll be attending the Met Gala?

Some more photos… call me crazy, but I think Kendall Jenner was styled well for the WHCD. She looks sophisticated and pretty. I would have edited out the choker necklace, but everything else is fine.

Helen Mirren showed off her Prince tattoo (likely temporary) and purple gown.

Kerry Washington looks pregnant. I’ve been hearing that rumor for a few weeks and I think it’s happening. She’s so small, and it’s just like last time – she’s showing really early.

Emma Watson, what are you wearing?!

And finally, Priyanka Chopra was there! And she got to meet the Obamas.

I loved his speech, but I was annoyed that he mentioned Kendall Jenner. Was Bernie Sanders intentionally included in the list of celebrities? I love Helen Mirren and I loved Prince, but no. I must be crazy, but I think Emma Watson looks cute

    • lilacflowers says:

      I thought Emma looked great.

    • Green Is Good says:

Co-sign regarding Emma Watson. I love her look. It:s uniquely stylish.

    • Snazzy says:

I was too actually. Just when you thought the ego couldn’t get any worse, they are mentioned by the prez himself …

    • spidey says:

@ GNAT Made me think she saw a bandwagon and decided to jump on it.

    • seesittellsit says:

Second that – I thought she looked fabulous. But is it just me or are Huddle’s trousers a skinch too short?

      • NUTBALLS says:

Yes they are. His new stylist is trying to make him more trendy with the high water pants.

  2. lilacflowers says:

Michelle Dockery would have benefited from some more support in the front of that dress.

Gary the Dog does what he wants!

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I have learned the hard way that it is never a good idea to stand in the middle with your arms around both people at your side.

    • emmet says:

Check out Gary Fisher’s Instagram – yeah I know but
he is being held the crook of the arm of a very expensively tailored suit jacket
      wow – lucky dog

  3. Gingerly says:

He and Idris Elba visited Wintour’s house yesterday. He is obviously in NYC. Love for Gary Fisher.

    • lilacflowers says:

He and the oxblood suit were in NYC last night. With Idris.

    • Meee4 says:

After seeing the pics of Tom and Idris(a co chair of the Met ball) coming out of Wintour’s house, its a safe bet we’ll be getting more tux Tom tonight. Hopefully in better fitting pants than those waders at WHCD. After which he just needs to go home. From all the fun pics and videos from that event, I do think he was in his geeky glory. He found his people.

  4. vauvert says:

Tommy looked great, loved Emma’s outfit. Michelle’s dress is really meh and that colour never seems flattering on anyone.
So – if i understand this right – various press outfits invite their own guests? The list of invites is not generated by the WH? Sorry, I am confused…
Helen is the cream as usual.
Any good impression of Kendall in a relatively nice outfit was wiped out by the photo of her pushing up her boobs in that strapless top. If you need support that desperately, maybe wear a bra? The choker obsession needs to find a good place to die, same for the “wisps of hair artistically styled to droop along one’s face”.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Omg, the wisps of hair…agree about the chokers, too.

    • Maxine Ducamp says:

@vauvert, yes it’s the press that host the dinner and invite the guests. Technically even the president is a guest at the event.

    • Nike says:

Tom, Carrie, and Gary are adorable. I like this.

Can’t stop watching this robot showdown of the alleged Bond contenders. It’s mesmerizing. https://www.instagram.com/p/BE3cSYEEQOT/?hl=en

  6. Miss M says:

Kerry W has been looking pregnant for quite a while. I noticed when she gave an interview to Jimmy Kimmel earlier this year. I thought it was odd she was wearing such loose dress. But then I remembered it was LA and the weather was probably warm, etc.

  7. Gingerly says:

Those who are interested in the tennis match between Hiddles and Laurie, read this article.

    http://www.emmys.com/news/features/cat-meet-mouse

Tom claimed that he aced Laurie, while HL call Tom a liar.

    • spidey says:

Haha, I get the impression they get on well and enjoy taking the proverbial out of each other.

  8. Mia4s says:

” He even had to pose with Carrie’s dog Gary”

Small correction to your article @Kaiser; clearly it was Gary who had to pose with Hiddleston. Gracious of Gary I think, to lower himself to a lesser star’s level. 😜

  9. Green Is Good says:

Bet you Joe Biden tried to get Helen Mirren drunk and Cop a feel.

  10. spidey says:

Glad to see Michelle smiling after last year’s tragedy.

  11. Tig says:

It was good to see Michelle D out and about, support or no re the dress. Hope the grief is lessening a bit.

Just saw Kerry on GMA- if she’s not pregnant, girl needs a check-up STAT. That is not a big breakfast bump for sure!

  12. SilkyMalice says:

    Love Carrie’s dog.

  13. Guest says:

Since when the eff is he attending the MET gala? Is this something like an accolade for him fashion wise? Please tell me that this has nothing to do with his dull yes or no girlfriend Olsen….
Btw it is weird to take a dog to an event like this one. Poor him. So many people surounding him.

    • Gingerly says:

Anna Wintour seems to like him – she hosted a party for TNM three weeks ago – and he has three works ongoing and might be nominated for Emmy awards. His stylist’s diligent work migh be helpful. That’s what I can think of. Give him some credit.

    • Dara says:

Absolutely nothing to do with Olsen – I think. Hiddles has probably been on the Wintour radar for a while. She hosted the Evening Standard awards in London when he won for Coriolanus, Crimson Peak had a party at Bergdorf’s when it premiered in NY which got the fashion people buzzing, and with the crazy success of The Night Manager in both the UK and the US she’s found her next British heartthrob to campaign for. I’m a little ambivalent about it tbh – back in the day, being a favorite of Vogue actually meant something, but now it feels a little like jumping the shark.

      • Guest says:

Since the moment KK appeared on the cover of Vogue I do not take AW seriously but I am happy for Hiddles. I really am. The man can wear a suit like no one else. As for the Olsen mention, I was just wondering about his invitation. Didn’t know that AW hosted some events before. So thanks for the clarification.

      • Dara says:

My disenchantment with AW and Vogue started a little before the KK-cover, but that was the final nail in the coffin.

The pre-events were a surprise to me too, as was the fact Tom was there. In fact, until he landed in NY I would have bet money he wouldn’t attend. With Idris as official co-host, I thought he would be the official “hot British actor” representative.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Dara, did you see the Fug girls editorial on that cover. It was really good. My respect for them grew with that fantastic piece of writing.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Co-hosts are also expected to pull in their “circle.” Idris may have submitted Tom’s name to the list for approval

      • Dara says:

Nutty, I read the Fug piece on my lunch break and agree with most of what they wrote. It must be tough being a magazine in this ever-increasing digital age, so I understand why Vogue has started doing things that appeal to a larger readership pool, but I’m still disappointed.

    • NUTBALLS says:

It’s a big deal to get invited and with the year that he’s had, I’m not surprised he’s been included on the guest list. As far as Olsen’s invite, I would guess that most of the Cap 3 actors were invited with the movie opening here this week. I doubt it had anything to do with Tom.

      • Beach girl says:

Her twin sisters have been regulars at the Met Ball for years and EO attended in 2014. As much as she appears at fashion shows and on the cover of fashion magazines I’m sure she’s considered a fashion icon of sorts just like her sisters, hence the invitation. Let’s not forget there will be 600+ attendees.

      • NUTBALLS says:

But I’m only paying attention to 1% of those attendees! 🙂

    • Meee4 says:

Let’s also add that EO reasons for being there is that her sisters are designers that could be sponsoring her. I mean they did named a label after her. All nothing to do with Tom.

    • Evie says:

Actually, Carrier Fisher’s dog Gary is a certified therapy dog, although he’s not wearing a vest. She’s mentioned this in several interviews. Fisher adopted him several years ago. The dog helps her deal with the stress of her bipolar disorder.

      http://www.peoplepets.com/2015/12/07/article/fluff-awakens-carrie-fishers-service-dog-gary-becomes-overnight-celebrity

      • Guest says:

Which is fine and good for her. But can the dog handle flashlights and so many people? Just curious.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Guest, the dog would have been trained for that. They match the training of therapy dogs to the needs of the owner.

      • Guest says:

Ah okay. Now I get it. Thanks girls. Good for Fisher then….. And our Hiddles Boy has been a fashion darling long before this it seems. Didn’t know that either. You girls just know everything. See, that is the reason why I love asking questions on here. 😂 thanks.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Keep asking, Guest. Don’t let anyone shame you here for doing so!

        Asking > Googling

      • Guest says:

Aaaawwwwwww Nutty. Do not worry. I will keep asking stupid questions and hoping that you girls will never stop replying…. 😂 thanks. Now let’s hope that there won’t be any meltdown on here tomorrow because you never know with Hiddleston. May be he will suprise us….

      • Dara says:

@Guest, the only that could trigger a meltdown from me is if his trousers are too damn short!! Other than that, it’s all good.

And keep those questions coming – information and opinions are two things that are never in short supply around here. Sarcasm and snark are also seem abundant. Sometimes we misplace our sense of humor, but usually not for long.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Gary Fisher is Carrie’s comfort dog; essentially, he is a service animal and goes wherever she goes to help with her mental health issues.

Tom has been on the London Men’s Fashion Week committee for years and he has had encounters with AW over the past few years. She likes to invite lots of actors such as Redmayne and Firth. It is possible she invited Tom before but he has been working at the time of the gala the past two years. Doubtful any invite would have anything to do with Olsen.

    • Miss Melissa says:

I’ve been wondering when AW would sink her claws into Legs for some time now. I don’t know why she was so into the Batch with the way Legs WEARS GREAT SUITS!

      • Lilacflowers says:

Because Harvey was pushing him for an Oscar. All part of that campaign

    • Die Zicke says:

Gary is a service dog. Carrie Fisher has bipolar disorder and he helps her cope. I think she needs him at public events. Honestly, he doesn’t seem very phased by the cameras and people. Carrie loves him very much, I doubt she’d put him in a position where he felt uncomfortable.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Tom might also have received an invite due to his position of BFI Ambassador

  14. Tash says:

    Damian looks hot!! That’s all.

  15. Beach girl says:

@Guest. I agree with you about KK and Vogue. My opinion changed after all of that happened. Still it’s an honor for him to be invited and I can’t wait to see what he wears!

  16. Clairej says:

Michelle Obama looks incredible. Would love to see Tom in the flesh. I despair what the Met Ball has become. Dreading some of the attendees

  17. Magnoliarose says:

Waiting for the Met fashion rundown. Tom has a good team and I think this direction is good for him. Boyfriend can wear a suit beautifully and would look fantastic as a fashion guy in ad campaigns. He’s not pretty but he’s handsome and different. I love men with his build and against my will I’m addicted to TNM.

    • Dara says:

No one wears a suit better than Mr H, but this is the first event where I’m actually nervous Tom won’t nail it – mainly because I’ve not liked what his current stylist has given him to wear about 30% of the time. I want super-traditional white tie, with trousers that not only hit the tops of his shoes but actually have a slight break to them. And I better see some shirt-cuff peaking out under the jacket sleeves or there will be hell to pay. He’s allowed decorative shirt studs (diamonds are my dream), a pocket watch, and perhaps a tasteful lapel pin or boutonniere, but nothing more fashion-forward than that. And absolutely no color other than black or white.

      • NUTBALLS says:

From your fingers to God’s ears, Dara.

      • Magnoliarose says:

Yes I agree and I hope he looks great. He’s grown on me a lot and I find myself rooting for him too. Suave suits him best and those eyes are everything.

      • Cranberry says:

“Suave suits him best and those eyes are everything.”
        @Magnolia

        In a nutshell.

      • spidey says:

Apparently he will be wearing Ralph Lauren

      • Bay says:

This is the reason men’s fashion is a bore. *sigh*

      • Dara says:

@Bay – Have you seen Idris? He is white-tie perfection – he ticked every box on my wishlist (except for the Apple wrist watch, but since they are a sponsor, I’ll allow it). To me, he is the exact opposite of boring. I positively swooned.

      • NUTBALLS says:

Tom looks great… white tie and tails. pants proper length. I wholeheartedly approve.

      • Dara says:

I wish he had tugged his shirt cuffs down, but other than that he was absolutely flawless. The classic, debonair Tom I fell in love with is back. Thank God! My breathless desire for the man was on the wane.

      • Cranberry says:

I think Jack Huston nailed it. Alexander Skarsgard looks good too although he’s wearing the same as Paul Rudd, Dominic West, and most the rest.

        http://hollywoodlife.com/pics/2016-met-gala-mens-fashion-ball-red-carpet-pictures/#!1/jack-huston-met-gala-2016-ball-2/

Tom looks fine, but it’s not a knock out (only seen pic w ED on steps). I don’t think he should have done tails. Regular dinner jacket would’ve been better perhaps. It seems more the trend, but what do I know. At least he’s a good friend to Idris in the same formal wear. Did they coordinate this?

      • lilacflowers says:

@Cranberry, the dress code for men was white tie and TAILS. Anyone in a regular dinner jacket was not following the rules. Wintour instituted that particular rule a few years ago after too many disasters. Of course, some ignore it totally (Kanye) and some try to be creative with the theme (the guy with the robotic sleeves) Women get to be more creative at the Met Gala.

      • Dara says:

A couple of years ago, The Met/Vogue upped the ante and specified “white tie” as the dress code, so anyone in a tuxedo is technically under-dressed, but that’s not a big deal – most guys do opt for a tuxedo. I noticed A LOT of navy tuxedos. Jack did look good – but Idris is still my best-dressed guy (sorry Tom).

oops – @lilac beat me to it about the dress code. I should add that white-tie usually requires long dresses for the women, but whoever dressed Alicia Vikander, Michelle Williams and a few others obviously chose to ignore that particular custom.

      • Cranberry says:

        Thanks @lilac, @Dara.

I was wondering about that. I don’t keep up on the rules or on Met in general. Just look at the aftermath pics and try to make up my own alternate universe saga about some of the more “creative” attendees.

But I did suspect Idris was the legitimate standard of the gala. I just hadn’t seen any other tuxes besides Tom. I’ll be checking all the aforementioned today.

    Well, Idris certainly looks stunning

  20. Meee4 says:

Oh yes Idris…SJP is Disappointing. She usually goes so big. Alicia = no. So far it’s pretty non spectacular.

  21. spidey says:

    http://lemonade-time.tumblr.com/image/143763265031

Bet that’s the first time Tom has had to stand one step up!

    • Gingerly says:

Maybe he had to when he walks with Gwen Christi? I love his white tie and tail tuxedo. Elegance itself.

  22. Lilacflowers says:

He’s with Elizabeth Debicki and he is perfection in white tie and tails.

    • Gingerly says:

I thought that he would be perfect and he is.

    • NUTBALLS says:

They look so good together…. *le sigh*

This is a great way to promote their mini-series.

    • Meee4 says:

I love that shade of green on Elizabeth. Yay for Tom wearing classic pants that fit. Kerry Washington is definitely preggers.

      • Gingerly says:

After so many metal and silver, I found her dress refreshing.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Kerry announced her pregnancy this afternoon

      • NUTBALLS says:

The color was pretty and I liked the cut of the dress but not the pattern. She looked gorgeous from the neck up, as usual.

      • Meee4 says:

        Ahh,thanks. I missed that announcement.

      • Cranberry says:

        @Nutballs

Yeah, it’s very pretty, but a little bit underwhelming for the event and doesn’t compliment Tom’s formal tux.

      • Dara says:

@Cranberry – agree 100%. I’m dying over Cindy Crawford’s Balmain dress, she may win my best-dressed award.

      • NUTBALLS says:

It was a pretty dress, but looked too dowdy for a Ball. Her Berlindale dress would have been more appropriate. Something eye catching and sleek.

  23. Lilacflowers says:

The trend seems to be gaudy, metallic, mother of the bride on very young women

    • NUTBALLS says:

Madonna needed to be shown the door in that hideous thing she was wearing.

      • lilacflowers says:

It looked like she pulled something out of her old tour wardrobes from 1985. But the worst part about her look was her face. She can barely even move her mouth to speak any more.

  24. spidey says:

Right I’m off to bed now, catch up with you all in the morning. xx

  25. TotallyBiased says:

(Waiting for the inevitable, internet-breaking picture of Tom and Idris together in their sartorial perfection.)

  26. Cranberry says:

Elizabeth’s dress is so nice. She looks lovely in it. Of course she’s built like a model, but hopefully this would look good on many women although maybe gotta be on slender side. The floral pattern seems in theme with Emma Watson’s WHCD floral print dress.

  27. TotallyBiased says:

AND we have a winner–seriously, Claire Danes in Zac Posen’s glowing fiber optic fabric gown looks just wowza in both regular lighting and the dark. Perfectly pulls off the theme AND compliments her beautifully.

  28. spidey says:

Given that the dress code is white tie and tails, wouldn’t it be funny if they had refused entry to those improperly dressed? Looking at you in particular Kanye.

  29. spidey says:

    sorry, duplicated.
