It’s been a big weekend for singer Gwen Stefani, as far as exposure is concerned. She exposed her (toned) abs on the red carpet for the 102.7 KIIS FM’s 2016 Wango Tango on Saturday and she also rocked the crowd and shared a makeup-free selfie on Instagram.
Gwen hit the red carpet for Wango Tango on Saturday in camo capris, gold studded heels and dip-dyed hair. She completed her look with fishnet stockings and a see-through turtleneck shirt which looked like Charlie Brown meets Donna Summer. The singer told E!, “I just can’t believe I’m here right now at Wango Tango. It just feels so exciting to have something new out there. And to have the opportunity to share my music with people. Sharing music is so spiritual you know, it’s so healing, so incredible, so I just feel honored.”
Gwen, who called her recent hit country duet with Blake Shelton “a miracle” thoughtfully posted a pic of herself sans makeup, presumably to make us all feel better about ourselves, to her Instagram. She told PEOPLE, “I was just like laying there, I just got in bed and I was like, ‘Maybe I’ll send a picture to Blake. You just start doing like fooling around with it. I had actually a new camera on my phone and I just took that picture.”
I am actually a year older than Gwen and I have to give her props on posting her makeup-free selfies. She looks good (and I’m not naive enough to think that she hasn’t had injectables). Good on Gwen for showing her makeup-free face. If I looked like that when I woke up….just saying…
You know I used to think her style was sort of fun and free but now it kind of looks silly. It’s very try-hard. Maybe it’s all the weird fishnet material? I don’t know.

Something happened somewhere along the line where it stopped looking cool, and started looking desperate. And it’s sad. I used to love Gwen. Now…eh. I could take or leave her.

Oh no please Kitten. Madge has a decade on her, plus shall we say her face is a little harsher than Gwen. I think Gwen’s right on the borderline where she can still pull off the rocker chick thing a tad longer. She looks pretty good wo makeup. I do feel for Madonna, she’s leaning towards What Ever Happened To Baby Jane territory…bless her heart.
It doesn’t look that try hard to me, but it looks so very dated. You could say this picture was taken at the Teen Choice Awards in 2005 and I would believe you.

It is try-hard. In her early days she had the same basic aesthetic, but she kept things so much simpler. Cropped cargo’s and a sheer mesh top, sure. Bedazzled cargo’s and a sheer top that looks like something a 12 year figure dancer’s mom made them, no way.
Yes, that’s the difference. She took her old style and turned the tackiness way, way up.

My first reaction after looking at the top pic was that the shirt looks like it was inspired by Charlie Brown’s shirt, that zigzag pattern is atrocious.
She looks so much prettier and younger without all of the harsh makeup she usually wears. I love makeup, but if she used it well she would be stunning.
I don’t know what the craze is about putting a shimmery obvious foundation on and then harsh thick eye makeup (and usually it’s black) it’s SO harsh, and it really ages the face. My mom does it too!
She does look so much younger without makeup. You’re right, if she deployed it more judiciously, she would look amazing. She’d also look better without the ridiculous getups like this one.
ITA but she’s always worn a sh*t ton of makeup. It can be hard to break that habit as we get older so I feel her pain.
I’m finally at the stage where going makeup free feels really liberating. Plus it takes me way less time to get ready 🙂
I still wear some makeup, but I don’t wear much on my eyes or anything shimmery. It just doesn’t look the same.
Yup, as we age the eye area becomes the most critical example of less is more in terms of makeup.
Occasionally I still miss my dark eye shadow, but it just makes me look like a real housewife if I wear it now.
On a Kim K or someone similar I’d be put off. But she is still a rock star and I don’t hate the outfit on her. On me, run for the hills, but she can still rock it. The makeup free pic….well a little lip glass and light foundation, but she looks good. Let that skin breath Gwen, good job.

The outfit is very classic Gwen Sfefani from years ago. It looks odd because she hasn’t dressed that quirky in a while. But the hair?!? What’s going on there?

So I have a question about the hair for the hair experts on CB. That must be a clip on extension, right? Or does she dye it black for real? her hair must be very damaged from all the blonde hair dye anyways.
Those are definitely clip in extensions. Just judging by their look and how her hair doesn’t blend in. I’m assuming this us all on purpose, as she has enough money and style sense to go for a more realistic look of she wanted.
She’s appearing at an event she’s performing at. She’s a pop-rock star. Big deal. She isn’t supposed to conform to what everyone else wants. I don’t think she’s try-hard. I think Gwen is who she is.

Not going to tell her what she ‘should’ do. Like Madonna, so much of her image is about her toned muscles. I wish they’d both choose more stylish ways to accentuate their dedication to maintaining health through exercise, rather than whatever shows off the most skin. Viola Davis always has a great way to show her arms. I don’t mean they ‘should’ cover up, or whatever, but a lot of us have defined our self worth via how acceptable our bodies are for public consumption. It might be nice for our contemporaries to move on from being 19. Has anyone watched Advanced Style, yet? Those women are taking it farther than I will, but there are myriad options when it comes to showing a nice figure.
her style is whacko, I always feel like I love 1/2 to 1/3 of every outfit she wears, then she ruins the rest of it with something horrifically tacky and bad.

Wow. she looks so pretty without makeup, it seems a crime to wear all the harsh stuff she does. I hate her outfit – she is in great shape, but it does her no favors – her legs are chopped off halfway and so is her torso with that crop top.

Wendy Williams trash talked Gwen’s make up routine on her show last week saying all that makeup would ultimately turn off Blake- since he is low maintenance and she can’t go to the corner store without a full face on. She didn’t say it in a malicious way and it kinda made sense in a weird way.

I don’t see how she’s a try-hard. She hasn’t deviated from her style the entire time she’s been in the public eye. This is just Gwen as she’s always been. She’s good at dressing for her shape as well I think!
Filters and LOTS of injectables and you too can wake up that way. On carpool karaoke with James C. she tried to make emoji faces. Tough to do when your face doesn’t move. I used to really like her but now she just comes across as incredibly thirsty and needy. Enough already.
It freaked me out how little her face moves. I wondered if Cordon was effin with her on purpose by asking her to make all those emoji faces. I mean her face is like a mask.

We are the same age and you simply can’t buy that skin, imo. I’ve seen many many try with lasers, botox, and filler… it doesn’t work. Her skin truly is a combo of good genes and staying out of the sun. I’m sure she maintains, with little bits of botox and filler here and there, but it’s not the reason her skin looks like that. She’s taken care of herself both with exercise and skincare. Her body is beyond ridiculous, gwah… after a couple of kids too!! Good for her, she could easily pass for a decade younger than her age (which is all that seems to matter in Hollywood) . Her style, however, is awful and makes her seem desperate somehow. I wish her style would evolve, the world has plenty of tweens, teens, etc… my generation needs women (and men too) that allow for age. I’m not even sure what I mean by that because it can be too hard to define, but it’s allowing for age to happen and not being ashamed of it.
Her make- up free selfie reminds me that I desperately wanted to have dark brown eyes as a teenager. They are beautiful.

That’s the thing that got me too, I would have more respect if Gwen had simply said, I took the cute pic for Blake and his response was so glowing that he inspired me to show the world, how only he sees me, underneath it all. But, she chose to be defensive and the false-posturing is obviously inauthentic. Poor girl always attributed her full face makeup at all times to Gavin’s preference, but, home girl does not seem comfortable without it and I do think Blake likely finds it all a bit much at times.
Maybe when people stop expecting her to be edgy all the time. She’s 40 something and she’s forced to keep up with younger pop stars to prove she’s still the cool chick from No Doubt. That is in no way a makeup free selfie, but it’s nice to see her with the lighter makeup. I’ve always loved her look, but I do think she’s getting to that age where you have to be very careful with the amount of foundation you put on.
Love the turtle neck. Never been a fan of camo, but I’ll give her that she’s stayed true to her look into her forties and didn’t feel the need to change it.

I can see why some would say “try-hard” blah blah blah….I can’t get past her fabulous abs! She looks great! It’s Gwen Stefani! She has always had outfits that are artistically “out there” ! What do you expect her to start wearing? A twinset? Jeez people!
People are a trip, Can we keep in mind the event shes attending ? It would be “try- hard” if she showed up with pink hair (Which she did in 1999) or denim cut offs or a flower crown. Style wise I feel like shes always been in a class all her own. Tom-Boy chic, and if you stop and think about it she is still fully covered.
