Dwayne Johnson might get his own Fast & Furious spinoff: good idea?

Action star and serial do-gooder Dwayne Johnson may be branching out even more. According to producer Hiram Garcia of the Fast and Furious franchise (say that five times), they are trying to position Johnson’s Luke Hobbs character to launch spinoff movie. Not only is it possible, but Garcia and Johnson have already started flushing out the background and storyline. Don’t hold your breath yet, the reason Johnson was sidelined in Fast 7 was due to his over packed schedule and there aren’t signs that it is lightening up anytime soon.

Do they love the character enough to make a standalone Hobbs movie starring Dwayne Johnson? “A hundred percent,” according to Garcia. “I think there’s always been conversations for that. The scheduling of it all is a challenge but there are always talks about a potential spinoff movie and what we can do with it. DJ and I were just talking about that the other day – our visions for it. There’s a real goal for that and we can have enough fun with that where we’ve earned that now with the audience. He’s a beloved enough character that they’d love to see what a ride with him would be like in his world. We have tons of history that we’ve crafted for this guy that we continue to sprinkle in throughout the movies. You’ll see a little bit more in this movie but ultimately we want to take that ride and spin him off and have some fun with it.”

OMG – DJ?!? I am totally calling him “DJ” too. Don’t worry about DJ’s screen time on Fast 8 because Garcia assures us that although DJ hasn’t shown up on set yet, they have him for a good chunk of his time and he will be “spread throughout the entire film.” Let’s all just take a minute with that thought, shall we? Mmmmmm.

DJ also just confirmed that they are still moving forward on the remake of Big Trouble in Little China. I know, I know – enough with the remakes (both for DJ and for movies in general)! But there are some movies that just scream for reincarnation and BTiLC is one of them. DJ is perfect to reprise Jack Burton; he can deliver a cheesy line better than anyone I know. When asked about the plans, DJ replied, “That’s happening, man! That’s happening, that’s happening. And again, that’s one of those things where you gotta take really good care of it.” You know what I think? I think Kim Cattrall should still play Gracie. She was so gloriously campy in the role and she could still get away with it. Fast 8 co-star and original Jack Burton, Kurt Russell, was asked about the remake and you know what ol’ Jack Burton always says… ol’ Jack always says, what the hell.

I like Dwayne Johnson ( he has a great smile and a nice guy too) but he will soon be called the ” Remake King” if those are the only roles he is taking on.

I love this wonderful and kind man and I will watch anything he is in..

  3. Naya says:

These Fast and the Furious producers are something else. I cant imagine anybody takes any pride in churning out this formulaic crap. How many times can an adult film predictable drag races between supped up sports cars before they get very very bored?

I’ll assume you haven’t seen the most recent entries in the series, because that hasn’t been true since the third.

  4. Astrid says:

He would be awesome in Big Trouble in Little China. I’d see that. Go Dwayne!

  5. Erinn says:

I like him. I can’t take him seriously for the life of me though. His dad was born a few hours away from me, in Amherst NS, which I always thought was kind of cool.

  6. jesb says:

He’ll likely never win an oscar but that’s ok because he’s so damn likeable I’m watch anything he’s in

  7. Olenna says:

DJ? He’ll always be The Rock to me. Love this guy.

Love him and will support anything he’s in. Great guy… ☺

Hell, yes! Finally a movie concept I’d be on board with watching.

They need a spin-off, tbh, the main series looks like it might derail in the next entry (I have zero interest in Kurt Russell’s character/addition, sorry) and I feel like we’ve been seeing less of Dwayne in the series since 5. It’s as if someone thought he and Vin were too physically similar when the characters/roles are very distinct from each other.

So I’m all for a spin-off. Hope they put Nathalie Emmanuel’s hacker character in it too.

Great guy, and so much more than just eye candy. I’ll go to see any movie that he is in. Hell, before my husband died I would sit and watch WWE with him just because The Rock was performing (oh, the good old days).

The last movie only came alive when the Rock or Kurt Russell were on screen. I’d watch a spin off movie with the two of them.
