Princess Eugenie criticized for flying to Switzerland… for a charity event

The Daily Mail is dragging a York princess again. It’s one of the DM’s favorite things to do! This story is about how Princess Eugenie is terrible at working because she jetted off to Switzerland… for a UNAIDS gala. While Eugenie and Beatrice do spend a lot of time (too much time) at their parents’ Swiss ski chalet, I don’t think we should drag Eugenie for this particular trip, right? Or maybe we should… according to the Mail, Eugenie is still on notice about taking off too much time in her first year of work in London.

As the daughter of ‘Airmiles Andy’, it’s no surprise Princess Eugenie has a penchant for overseas travel. The 26-year-old royal jetted to Switzerland on Monday night for the glamorous UNAIDS Gala in Basel, dazzling in a £1,120 Alexander McQueen dress for the event – her seventh jaunt abroad since last August.

It comes after Eugenie was reportedly denied any more holiday time after taking five weeks off in her first ten weeks at her job as an associate art director at Hauser & Wirth. The then 25-year-old planned to jet across the Atlantic for her mother’s birthday celebrations in New York on October 15 and also see her sister Beatrice, who now works in the city.

However, according to the Mail On Sunday, Eugenie’s bosses at Hauser & Wirth in Mayfair reportedly ordered her to remain in London to man a stall in Regent’s Park for Frieze London, one of the most important fairs in the contemporary art world. It does seem that the princess, who is eighth in line to the throne, is still keen to spread her wings though, as she was pictured enjoying the glittering gala in Switzerland – where tickets for a table cost more than £70,000.

The gala, which aimed to raise funds to increase access to HIV prevention and treatment services for women and children worldwide, took place at Messe Basel during Art Basel week, perhaps suggesting that her trip was a working holiday.

It’s pretty clear to me that Eugenie just went to Switzerland because of this charity event. And she even gave a speech! If the Duchess of Cambridge had flown in to Switzerland on her own for a charity event AND made a speech, the UK papers would have had wall-to-wall coverage about how Kate is the most magnificent, charitable and beautiful creature to ever walk this earth. But Eugenie gets slammed for it because she’s trying to balance a real job and princess-ing and charity work? Yeah, I’m actually starting to feel sorry for the York princesses.

Check out Eugenie’s cutting look at the Cambridges last Friday.

Girl needs to treat the girls better with a decent bra.

Eugenie is blessed to take after the Fergusons.

    • FingerBinger says:

Eugenie is a good mix of both her parents. Beatrice however looks like the Fergusons.

      • mayamae says:

I disagree. I think Eugenie looks just like her mother. Beatrice got the Windsor eyes and teeth. Doesn’t everyone say Beatrice is a ringer for Queen Victoria?

    • anotherk8 says:

You ned to take a look at pictures of QE2’s (very handsome father). Surprise! He doesn’t look like Colin Firth…. more like an older boy version of Eugenie. I find Eugenie sooo attractive (much more so than Beatrice)

      • mayamae says:

I’m familiar with the queen’s father (and agree he was handsome) but I still see Sarah when I look at Eugenie. Body shape, eyes, smile, teeth. She’s dodged the Windsor-bullet thus far.

five weeks off during her first 10 weeks on the job? I’d fire her.

    • Starkiller says:

What’s the problem? It’s hardly her fault that Americans still in the Stone Age with regard to holiday leave. The rest of the world doesn’t live to work, quite the opposite.

Brit companies are required by law to give 6 wks holiday leave at a minimum, in addition to public holidays and paid sick time. A 5-second Google search reveals that she started at this job last July. Europe basically shuts down in August because most Europeans take the entire month of August off. I don’t really see an issue here.

    • Deedee says:

It’s not like they didn’t know who she was when they hired her. And they probably guessed there would be times when she needed to be at charity events and events with the Royal Family.

    • India Andrews says:

Maybe there is an understanding that she will be gone a lot. In Diana’s say there were jobs for aristocratic ladies that didn’t interfere with shooting parties and polo matches.

  4. Bridget says:

One of the biggest assets she brings to her job is her social connections. She’ll be fine, as long as she’s there for the important events.

  5. HH says:

I’ve always had a soft spot for them. Even when I wasn’t that into royal gossip, I remember the criticism of Bea after being photographed in a bikini. You would have thought she released nuclear codes or something.

    • Sarah says:

I like these girls. They seem to actually want to contribute. Unlike WorkShy Willie and Barbie Kate. And it’s no wonder Harry seems hesitant to marry and have kids – this is how his kids will be treated in the future – mocked as second class citizens.

  6. Lex says:

Starting to feel sorry for her, because she took off five weeks in her first ten weeks of the job? So now she’s getting called out on other things? Bleh, she should get heat for it. Maybe not in the press, but I don’t see why she still has a job.

    • Lex says:

Why is it the public’s business what her job lets her do? Do you criticise other strangers’ work ethic? If her job gives her time off, that’s their business not ours. They’re obviously okay with it – it was probably even in her contract. She can’t really win! You’d think the vultures would be happy she’s earning her own money.

      • Lex says:

I feel like I’m fighting with myself. If you actually read my comment, I said it probably wasn’t the press responsibility to call her out but her job. But please, spare me the pity party for her.

I’ve had plenty of co-workers hired in with the stipulation that they get to take the trip of X weeks they had already planned long before accepting the job. If they didn’t want her to take time off, they would have fired her if she’d taken it without permission.

She spent a day at a high-profile charity event in Switzerland, socializing with the kind of wealthy donors her gallery wants as clients. That benefits her employers.

Off-topic: Her hat from Ascot Ladies’ Day yesterday was almost Camilla-worthy. And if her company didn’t want her to take a few days off to go to Ascot, they wouldn’t have approved the time or she’ll be fired for taking it.

    If looks could kill…

  9. Megan says:

Give the girl a break. She is clearly working in either her professional or charitable capacity, and possibly both.

  10. cerys says:

The CB article writer sums the difference in the media’s attitude towards the York girls and Waity very well.
it cant be easy bring the daughter of Airmiles Andy and Freeloading Fergie but the girls seem quite approachable and keen to interact with charities and people.
No-one else would get away with taking so many breaks from work but the publicity they bring to their firms probably compensates.

  11. lizzy says:

Her “job” is mostly relationship building with high net worth individuals- basiclly her social circle. So she is fine.
Lol @ her look at Cambridges. Its funny how the York girls (and Zara) get along so well with Harry but not quiet with Willnot..

LOOK AT BEA’S OUTFIT I NEED IT

  13. shanaynay says:

ugh, I work in the art world and hearing about this extremely privileged 25 year old with THAT job title at THAT gallery really grinds my teeth…I’ll have to work another 5-10 years just to get to where she is….

  14. Noreen says:

this post could have been the perfect opportunity to post new photos of Keanu Reeves (who was there)…..well, i guess his star faded a long time ago.

    • notasugarhere says:

It looks like he has four projects this year and 2-3 coming out in 2017. I hope at least one of them is a hit.

  15. caty1313 says:

If she was just a “regular” girl we would not be having this conversation at all. It is absolutely ridiculous to hold her or any member of any royal family to our standards. She is a blood princess trying to balance work and charity and yep, doing what normal rich people do, go on vacation a lot. So people need to stop the nit picking and side eyeing, would anyone give two you know whats if she was just “Jean York” from down the street? I think most of us would kill to be able to live a life such as that, so I do believe a lot of the snarking is simply envy.

  16. khaveman says:

Oh come ON. They are lucky to have a “royal.” Let her have her holiday time as long as she is there for the more important events. Comes with the territory. Work it out.

  17. India Andrews says:

Just keep trucking Eugenie. You are in a worse position than Harry because you are disposible in the eyes of the media. You never will have William and Kate’s media protection. I admire that you are committed to your charities despite the vitriol from the press and from people who don’t respect your parents.

  18. India Andrews says:

I love Eugenie’s side eye at the Cambridges in the photos.

  19. Kaz says:

I hate the negativity which the press is handing out to these girls. They turn up at all these events supporting the Queen plus charity events, try to have ‘normal’ jobs and although their fashion sense is wacky they are putting their best foot forward. It can’t be easy being the daughters of And-Sar and being sidelined by Charles who wants to slim down the monarchy. (Though who will do all the work when Liz and Phil are out of the picture and Ann slows down is the big question. Can’t see Bill and Kate doing too much.) These Princesses should be valued by the public and royal family for their efforts to represent the monarchy and the U.K. With a smile and some enthusiasm.
