Chrissy Teigen sets Twitter account to private: ‘cannot handle it anymore’

Chrissy Teigen – author, model, co-host and social media rabble rouser – has gone quiet. At least, her Twitter has. Long known for getting into squabbles online, Chrissy switched her Twitter to private on Tuesday because she’s “not strong enough anymore.” What is she no longer strong enough for? Absorbing bad energy. According to Chrissy, the venomous hordes are not to blame this time. She’s ghosting Twitter lurkers to cleanse her day of negative vibes.

Like the many celebrities overwhelmed by Twitter vitriol before her, Chrissy Teigen has made her account private for now.

Teigen revealed that she had switched her privacy settings because she’s “not strong enough anymore.”

Tweets sent from a private Twitter account cannot be shared, linked to or embedded. They can only be seen by the user’s confirmed followers who, for Teigen, number at 2.88 million. In other words, she still has a voice on social media ― just not one that can be heard by the entire internet.

“It’s not haters or trolls or generally mean people,” she continued, via Twitter. “I just feel like I am absorbing bad s–t 24/7. My body and mind cannot handle it anymore.”

[From Huffington Post]

So I guess we can put away the handkerchiefs to dry our tears, Chrissy isn’t gone. I just can’t embed her tweets because I am not one of her 2.88 million confirmed followers. In addition she still has her Instagram and we can probably catch up with her through husband John Legend’s account. I have no problem with her rationale. I think we do absorb too much negativity online these days and shutting it off for even 24 hours can do the mind a world of good. Seriously. But you can also learn things from social media, like that 18 USC Section 1702 says opening someone else’s mail is a felony.

Right before she went Twitter silent, Chrissy was live-tweeting the VP debate from her and John’s VP Debate Watch Party. She also live-tweeted the last Presidential Debate, for which HuffPo declared her tweets as the True Winner. I don’t dislike, Chrissy, I really don’t, but I do not understand why she gets as much credit as she does. She’s clever and her recipes are fine, but she’s just that – fine. I guess I will continue to be in the dark, unless 2.88 million people aren’t enough and she switches her Twitter back on.

I adore this outfit, however

You know what else she could’ve done before? NOT Tweet every 2 seconds of the day and reply to every single troll as often as she does. Seriously. That keeps away “bad sh-t” too.

+1. Came here to pretty much say the exact same thing. No one forces her to be as immature as she is or to fight with every single person on the Internet. She has no concept of not wasting her time on trolls or ignoring them. She chooses to waste her time on petty shit and then acts surprised. There is a story on CB today about Demi Lovato basically doing the same thing… the two of them should be friends!

I was just coming here to say this!

These chicks are learning the hard way they can’t post their private thoughts and not get reactions from random internet people. I don’t know how they can be so shocked that people are the way they are. The smart ones are the ones that don’t have fb, snapchat, whatever and just live their lives for themselves, not the amusement of others. **she probably will be back and Kim most definitely will be….she can’t not post pics of herself, too self-absorbed.**

Chrissy is like Demi Lovato in that they expect to comment and reply to every little thing without anyone disagreeing with what they have to say. And when people disagree they go bat shit. Like calm down. It’s okay. People disagreed with you. Welcome to life. It also boggles my mind why some celebs take Twitter and social media so damn seriously. Like it’s 140 characters. That’s why I love following Ryan Reynolds on Twitter. People will tweet him the most ridiculous things and he’ll respond back with something equally ridiculous. Not everything needs to be serious or everyone needs to be in agreement.

    Good, neither can we.

Twitter can be a beast. When she says negativity, I’m assuming she doesn’t mean people politely disagreeing with her but the more in the vein of just attacking her and being nasty.

Yes, this. It’s not an occasional person saying, “Hey you’ve been a jerk,” that’s the problem. It’s gang of trolls screaming that they want cut your throat and rape your kid and piss on your dog’s corpse, for weeks on end at you, multiple times a day.

People who sneer about harassment on Twitter usually have no idea how horrific it actually gets. There’s a reason why both Google and Disney have looked at buying Twitter, then walked away cold. The mess Twitter has let fester there may be too big to clean up now.

I had to delete people off of social media. This election and current environment of police shootings has brought out the worst in people.

me too. i actually deactivated facebook for a privacy reason and my plan was for it to be temporary but the last few months have been so amazing without it – i will never turn it back on. i didn’t realize how gross it was making me feel to be inundated with people’s horrible or obnoxious posts, the petty drama you can read 2nd hand or just being in people’s business all day. i can see what she means here.

  7. elle says:

Please, set yourself to private while you’re at it, Chrissy.

…who wore that green dress better…Chrissy or SJP….I’d go for SJP….

What do celebrities have to gain from social media anyway? Either they overshare personal stuff and locations like Kim K, or they put their foot in their mouth, or they start “feuds” with other people, or they engage with trolls, or they get abuse. I simply don’t undersand what are they doing tweeting all day about sensitive topics, and then expect people to not blow up their mentions. Even if you don’t engage with people, you can still get abuse. Like Leslie Jones and FKA Twigs. Let your management handle your social media. I can’t imagine how annoying it can be getting thousands of replies. Sometimes one troll puts you in a foul mood.

For whatever reason, I really like her. Do whatcha gotta do, Chrissy!

  11. Robin says:

Put your thoughts (or lack thereof) online, don’t be surprised if people disagree. Really don’t fel sorry for her.

  12. I Choose Me says:

I really really like her dress and her shades in the first pic. That’s all I’ve got.
