Nicki Minaj gave away thousands of dollars to pay for her fans’ education

Paris Fashion Week Womenswear Fall/Winter 2017/2018 - H&M Studio Show - Outside Arrivals

I haven’t much paid attention to Nicki Minaj since Remy Ma bodied her with the diss track to end all diss tracks, “ShETHER.” That was Oscar weekend, remember? At first, Minaj was shaken, then she made a big deal about how she was “winning” the beef by staying silent, then she finally released her “response” to Remy Ma and it was pretty weak. Still, I bet most people are still like “Nicki Minaj is awesome, who is Remy Ma?” and “Whatever.”

At the end of the day, Minaj is still rich, she’s still putting out music and she’s still invited to major events, like the Met Gala. She’s still winning. The Remy Ma thing was a blip and Minaj is actually doing fine. My point is that… Minaj actually doesn’t need to do nice things online for her fans just for a good PR hit. She might have actually done something really nice just to thank her fans and promote education. On Saturday, Minaj took to Twitter and started giving out money to students so they could pay off student loans, buy books or pay for classes. She tweeted for hours, chatting with her followers and asking them to DM their information and she would send the money they needed. Like, there are dozens of tweets, dozens of people asking her for money. Here’s just a taste:

All total, I calculate that Minaj probably pledged/gave away more than $30,000 on Saturday. Many of the people contacting her needed between $500 to $5000 to further their education or to simply pay off student loans. I’m not sure if she sat down on Saturday night and made a conscious choice to do this kind of stunt, or whether it was just an organic thing that started innocently when one person asked her for money and everything just kind of snowballed. Whatever it was, props to her. She should start her own Nicki Minaj Scholarship Program. Some day, a doctor will operate on you because she graduated from the SHETHER WHAT’S GOOD program.

This isn’t surprising. Anyone who’s followed Nicki can point to tons of interviews, twitter exchanges or general fan accounts to see how much she cares about her fans going to school and doing well. She didn’t need the PR but it’s great she’s doing it
Apparently people were receiving funds the next day so this was great

Yes this is definitely in step with her. I love it.
I especially love that the only qualifier is that you are a fan in need. I understand why must scholarships support the most in need or the smartest or whatever, but it’s nice to see just some random people getting help.

Don’t let her act fool you. Urban blogs know what’s up. Anytime her pedophile brother who raped a 12-year-old relative repeatedly (and beat on the same girl’s little brother to keep him quiet about it) is gonna be in the news she tries to take the attention away from him whether it be positive or negative. Again, urban blogs and the readers of said blogs have caught onto this pattern. Her brother is gonna be in court again today and guess who is paying for his legal team and his supporting his disgusting defense that the girl seduced him? Nicki. I refuse to support or give her any of my coins especially since so many of her fans are around the same age as the girl who was raped. She is a piece of work. Truly a nasty hateful individual to the black community who supported her come up as well. Hope she gets her karma soon.

At this point, regardless of the reasons, she was incredibly kind when she did not have to be. School debts are one of the most crushing aspects of American education.

      • Nicole says:

So this has been spanning YEARS so what was the excuse before her brother was arrested?

I remember people here in 2015 talking about how she used to tell young fans to stay in school etc, she may be a mess in other ways but education is something she’s cared about for years now.

And even if she never does it again, there are people who got some of the burden of their educational expenses eased because of this. That’s pretty great. Same with Beyoncé offering scholarships. It’s a positive change and def something I’d want to do if I had the money.

For this type of stuff, I don’t care why, just that she did.
Also, it’s adorable that she even interacts with fans at all.
    Good job Nicki.

This is my line of thinking, too, of every celebrity that does charity. I don’t care why they do it (like some above and below write about Nicki’s possible motivation), I just like that they do it and applaud them for it. And this one – direct money to pay off student loans – doesn’t even go through some shady organization (although to be frank, I don’t mind those charity events either).

To be fair to Niki Minaj, she’s always been about telling her fans to stay in school, and the rest of it. It’s a damned shame that you have to put yourself in so much debt for education. It’s the same thing over here in England (Scotland’s unis are free for Scots, and in Wales, their uni prices are capped).

  5. Skins says:

Wow, that’s putting your money where your mouth is. Well done Nicki

  6. Scout says:

Imagine how many more student loans she could pay off with the money she’s spending on her brother’s child rape case? Nicki loves school so much that she also funded said brother’s pre-school that tragically had to shut once he was arrested and charged for the aforementioned child rape. Oh look at that, her brother’s trial is just conveniently about to start in the next few days/weeks, what coincidental timing!

  7. commonsense says:

wow, that is really nice of her, the price for an education is really high and every bit of help is appreciated.

  8. Veronica says:

No shade. This was really kind of her.

  9. Babs says:

This is a really great gesture, well done Ms Minaj.

  10. Weak123 says:

Keep on doing great things Nicki,

This was something that meant a lot to the people she was able to help, & I have nothing bad to say about it.
    Rock on, Minaj.

  12. Hassan Mohammed says:

This was a nice gesture, keep it up nicki, well done.

I don’t think this was staged, if the reaction of the original Twitter poster is anything to go by. I doubt Nicki could have predicted that a person would randomly challenge her to pay her tuition fees (heck, she wasn’t even talking about education when the whole thing started). Did she turn it to her advantage? Maybe, but I don’t think it was pre-planned.

    Weldone nicki 😘😘
