Casey Affleck on his brother, Ben, playing Batman: ‘He’s not going to do that movie’

Ben Affleck and his brother, Casey, troll each other through the media. Before Casey won the Oscar for Manchester By The Sea Ben told a bunch of highly embarrassing childhood and personal stories about him, like the fact that Casey (allegedly) pulls his pants all the way down at urinals (is this so they don’t get splashback? IDK about guy stuff like that), that Casey is scared of butterflies and that he had to ask if Back To The Future was a true story. (I mean Casey was 10 when it came out, but he should have known better.) So this latest story, about Casey saying that Ben is no longer going to play Batman, could be more of the same from these two. Plus I doubt they talk much. They hung out earlier this month at a comedy show with Ben’s girlfriend, Lindsay Shookus. They don’t seem like the type of brothers who talk every day or even every week.

Anyway Casey was doing a radio interview with a sports radio show called Dale & Holley out of Boston. (You can watch that below. It was in honor of Casey throwing out the first pitch at Fenway Park.) They talked a lot of sports of course, and Casey told a cute anecdote about how it was his idea to do the Dunkin Donuts sketch for SNL. (Watch that if you need a laugh.) Dunkin Donuts actually sent him a $50 gift card after that. They asked Casey on if Ben would be in the standalone Batman movie and when one guy called him “tremendous” Casey said:

“I thought he was an OK Batman. No, he was great. He was great. He’s a hero, so he had something to channel and work with there. But he’s not going to do that movie [The Batman], I don’t think. Sorry to say.”

“Is that breaking news? Because I was just kind of making that up, I don’t know.”

You can watch that part of the interview at 6:00 into the video below. Casey smiles very slightly and then quickly straightens his face out again. I really think he’s messing with Ben. When asked if Casey would take his place he said “I don’t think so” and that he’s not going to do a superhero movie because “they’re all taken,” but “maybe if they found one for me.”

Casey is messing with Ben and he knows that he’ll get headlines for saying this. Ben just did an interview with EW in which he said his Batman was going to be more “traditional” in the upcoming movies. I interpret this as an indication that they’re dialing back Zach Snyder’s dark, brooding, always having dream sequences character. We’ve already heard that Joss Whedon is stepping in as director for Justice League (which has needed massive reshoots) after Snyder suffered a personal tragedy. Of course we heard that Ben wasn’t going to do Batman. A lot of people question his fitness and commitment to the role, but he’ll probably plod along and pull it through last minute. It’s doubtful he’ll get sober again for any length of time though, sadly.

Casey’s comments on Ben come at about 6:00.

Butterflies ARE scary. Take off the wings (not litteraly of course) and face the most hideous bug of all bugs.

And re: pulling the pants all the way down at the urinal. My husband works HR and had to sit a guy down to tell him it skeeved out other dudes to walk in & see his bare ass at the urinal. This is why god invented zippers and underwear with a hole for your johnson. Use them or use a stall, boys.

  2. Nicole says:

lol if ben doesn’t get a stand alone its because WB is trying to phase him out. Ben’s a mess and he isn’t the greatest Batman so I doubt they will invest a 3 picture trilogy into him

  3. Tiffany says:

Don’t joke about that Casey. You gave me hope, you bastard.

  4. Catmom says:

That SNL Dunkin short was hilarious. The husband and I still giggle over vanilla nut taps and “I’m not smoking in here!”

  5. LadyT says:

I watched the video. The first part of the quote about Ben being an “OK” Batman was definitely said for laughs, ribbing his brother. “But he’s not going to do that movie, I don’t think”, just seemed like his honest opinion snuck out.

  6. tullyg says:

let’s line ben up shirtless beside all the other superhero guys. honestly, he’s no batman.

  7. Bellagio DuPont says:

I’m so bored of this man and his mid life crisis

  8. Amelie says:

It’s kind of insane how these two brothers sound so much alike! They obviously look similar too but not so much that you’d confuse them. But the few times I’ve seen Casey Affleck in an interview it’s like I’m watching Ben. They have the exact same mannerisms.

I just think it’s funny because my sister and I don’t really look alike at all and many people have a hard time believing we are sisters when they first meet us.

  9. Originaltessa says:

He struggled to fit the suit when he was already starting from his semi slimmed down Gone Girl era. No way is he going to fit the suit now, and everyone knows this.

  10. LearningtheSystem says:

On Twitter there was a picture montage with 2 shots from the BvS movie and he was quite handsome. Next to that were 2 shots taken from the JL movie (preview I assume). His face is completely different and not in a good way at all.

  11. Emily says:

He’s a liability. It’s not just his sobriety, it’s his mental health and physical status.

  12. Dani says:

God, I can’t help it but I find Casey so dirty sexy. I’m ashamed for my biscuit.

  13. Mannori says:

I think one of the reasons of the extensive reshoots and rearranging of the main villains (no more Darkseid for JL1 to introduce him in all his glory to an eventual JL2) and upping Steppenwolf to main villain in JL1 with reshoots of the Amazons (specifically Robin Wright’s Antiope) most likely because of the huge success of Wonder Woman, well all this is probably the prologue so they can plot Batman’s death by the hand of Darkseid on JL2. Bye bye problematic fat drunk Ben and recasting of Batman (and possibly Superman too)

  14. Caroline says:

I think that Casey is just “messing with Ben”. Casey knew that this would all explode on the internet even more than it already has.
They seem to like to “troll “each other in the media, which obviously sells headlines and they know that and that is why they do it! Until there is an official statement from WB or Ben, it is all a rumor!
Obviously ,eventually Batman can’t be an older Batman forever and a younger actor will be cast as a younger Batman just like Spiderman.

    • Mannori says:

mmm.,,,if you hear and watch the video you kind of feel that he basically doesn’t even realises what he’s just said until the interviewers react shocked. Then he backpedals and tries to turn it into a joke. I think he knows his brother has already been outed as Batman. He has to know.

  15. Mandy says:

I watched the JL trailer(the comic-con one) in theater. It’s awful. Everything is so blue and dim that I can barely see what’s going on. Do they only fight in nights or wth? And too much CG to make it look “epic”. Don’t even mention those one-liners, no one laughed in theater.

  16. Nancy says:

Casey is a troll. LoL I think the whole Batman part of the interview is staged. They know that this ‘news’ will explode the gossip sites,,,etc, He isn’t a good source since his mockumentary. He didn’t say any big thing, He is not stupid.

  17. Carolnr says:

    My dad used to say:
Believe Nothing You Hear and Only One Half That You See!
I found this be very true!

  18. Deb says:

Prank or not, WB cannot be happy about it. The back and forth is getting old and it isn’t a positive when they are trying to build up enthusiasm for JL. Very distracting. Also Ben’s rep worded the response the same as Ben…he’ll stay Batman as long as the studio wants him. Does the studio want him? All this negativity has to be weighing them toward no.

    • Mannori says:

Ben’s response (and his rep’s) could be translated as ” I’m on the verge of being fired as Batman, after I was fired as director and writer, so it all depends on how Justice League performs” And if it doesn’t do well it shouldn’t even be his fault, but he will pay the price anyway.

      • Annetommy says:

I saw a list recently on the top ten “value for money ” actors and Ben was on it,
with $20 to the studio for every $1 they
spent. You could argue that it was
Batman rather than him, but if he’s
a liability now he certainly wasn’t then.
I have a feeling Chris Evans was best
        value.

  19. Deb says:

Just occurs to me that WB hasn’t addressed either the HR report before Comicon, or the Casey comment. Only Ben and his rep has spoken and it’s been about his being available if they want him. Huh.
