Octavia Spencer in Brandon Maxwell, not Tadashi Shoji, at the Oscars: gorgeous?

Octavia Spencer is getting her own post for once because she doesn’t get her due. She’s already an Oscar winner, this was her third nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category and she won in 2012 for The Help. No one was ever going to win Best Supporting Actress other than Allison Janney, but Octavia was so happy to be there and her film won Best Director and Best Picture. The cutaways to Octavia and Sally Hawkins last night gave me life. You can tell they’re close. (Kaiser covered Sally’s look here.)

Octavia wore Brandon Maxwell, which is surprising as she has been so loyal to Tadashi Shoji, who has dressed her for years. Octavia wore a different designer, Sachin & Babi, to the BAFTAs too. I wonder if there’s some drama with Shoji or if she’s just trying to mix up her look. Whatever happened, this off the shoulder dark green gown is just gorgeous and is cut and gathered so well. I especially like the simple sash at the waist. Check out her emerald earrings too.

Rita Moreno, 86, was wearing the same gown she wore to the Oscars in 1962, when she won Best Supporting Actress for West Side Story. She said the skirt was one piece, made out of obi, the fabric used in Japan for kimonos. I don’t have a designer ID but she said that it was made in the Philippines. During her interviews on E! And ABC Rita talked quite a bit about her 15 second Oscar speech. She said she didn’t expect to win and just kind of expressed surprise. She would have won the jet ski for sure! Rita’s look and accessories, including a statement necklace, velvet gloves and headband, were fabulous.

Paz Vega had one of the more unique dresses last night, a structured white Christopher Bu dress with a graphic floral print and split train. I find this very modern and pretty and I like that she wore no jewelry to compete with the dress. She’s definitely pulling off that pixie cut and her makeup is lovely. The underside of the train has a black and white grid printed on it!

Presenter Kelly Marie Tran, Rose from The Last Jedi, was in a deep cut Jenny Packham baby blue gown with metallic tassel sequins along the top and a chiffon skirt. We’ve seen this gown so many times before. I found this unflattering, but her styling was very pretty.

    Octavia looks gorgeous!
I kind of like Paz’s, just wish the underside didn’t have the grid pattern.

    • SK says:

That’s one of my favourite parts. It looks like a lot of Japanese kimonos with the contrasting print on the reverse side. Both fabrics/patterns are very Japanese actually. I love it!

  2. Crowdhood says:

I am OBSESSED with that floral dress. Normally all of these dresses look the same or they look willfully different. This is lovely and unique and I squealed when I saw it.

    • Esmom says:

Yeah, not everyone could pull it off but she does.

I think everyone here looked beautiful. If I had to nitpick Rita’s, I’d takeaway the headpiece/wrap. I found it distracting.

Wow, both Paz and Octavia look amazing.

I like the contrast on Paz’s dress. It saves it from being staid and traditionally pretty.

I love that Octavia is branching out. She still has the same classic style that fits her body type. I am also glad that more designers are being open to making dresses for different sized women. Brandon is an excellent designer.

Rita is such a delight and i love the bottom part of her dress. I think I like the necklace a little more.

  4. SK says:

Octavia looked STUNNING. This designer knows how to flatter her figure perfectly. It is beautifully cut for her. Ooh la la! She look super happy in it too – she knows she looks good!

Rita is hilarious and I love that she repeated her dress! Good for her!

Paz to me was one of THE looks of the night. This is a “different” dress, a risk and it pays off. She stood out for all the right reasons. Her dress was like no other. I loved the grid print on the reverse and this whole look gave me Japanese vibes (like a mod take on a kimono with the contrasting patterns). Her hair, make-up and lack of jewels offset the dress perfectly. Absolutely love this look.

Kelly Marie looks very pretty in a very boring, dated prom dress and prom styling. However I think she feels like a princess and I’m happy for her. There’s nothing offensive here, it’s just not anything interesting at all and I hope she gets better dresses and styling in the future.

I was grateful that KM’s dress wasn’t showing off more boob than ‘necessary’. Sometimes those deep vee’s are just too much. Hers seems to fit her well and I agree with you, @SK that she probably feels great in it.

  5. Tig says:

Absolutely loved Octavia’s dress- that shade of green was perfect on her.
I think the blue dress was cut a little tight in the bodice, but again the color suits her.
The floral print dress is beautifully tailored, but I think it would have been enhanced by some jewels.

  6. CG says:

They kept doing shots angled up at Octavia while she was sitting, and it looked like she was drowning in dress. That neckline just didn’t work while she was seated.

  7. Betsy says:

    Octavia looks amazing.
Rita: cute dress and way to fit into a dress from 1962?!
Paz’s dress is hideous on every level.
Kelly looks very sweet, but that dress does her darling figure no favors whatsoever.

    • Jugstorecowboy says:

If I am ever 86 and fit into a beautiful dress I wore at 30, I would probably wear it every day!

  8. manda says:

I thought Octavia looked great, and just came here to say, I love her. She is a treasure and I wish she was my friend

Paz looks so fabulous omg! I wish she would show up in more stuff

  9. EMc says:

I love every one of these and think all tye women looked gorgeous! These were some of my favorites of the night. If I could have the fabric of Paz’s dress made into something a little less dramatic I would wear it everywhere.

  10. Bridget says:

An obi is a sash on a kimono. That sounds like the explanation Rita was given 50 years ago.

  11. Aila says:

Nerd correction: the fabric of Rita Moreno’s skirt is not called obi; it’s just Japanese silk brocade. The word obi refers to the sashes that go with kimono and other Japanese clothes. A lot of fancy obi are made from that patterned silk brocade.

Octavia’s dress is gorgeous — the draping is perfect. I’m less of a fan of Paz’s dress because it seems like the pattern and the fabric are overwhelming her small frame.

Love Kelly Tran’s dress; the color looks great on her. I don’t think the style is very flattering on her though. Her makeup also looks lovely.

  12. Louise177 says:

Octavia looked great but it seems like most of her dresses are similar to each other.

  13. Audi says:

Rita Rules – she’s 86 and rockin’. Love her and her decision to repurpose this gorgeous and special print.

  14. sadie77az says:

Paz’s was my second favorite dress. Super interesting and man, she is a Hepburn-esque beauty. I want to like Octavia’s dress more than I do. Love the color on her, though!

  15. serena says:

I like Kelly Marie Tran but she looks like she’s going to prom with that dress.
