Duchess Meghan really did spend three days in Toronto with the Mulroneys

Here are more photos from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s trip to see Hamilton as part of a gala charity performance benefiting Harry’s Lesotho charity Sentebale. I still feel the same way about her tuxedo dress, by the way, even though the some peeps have been crying “double standards!” It’s almost like – hear me out – there’s a rabid fanbase devoted to minimizing and criticizing every single thing involving Meghan because they think that will make Kate look better? Weird, right?

Meanwhile, I was totally wrong about one thing: I thought it was Fake News a few weeks ago when there were reports of Meghan making a quiet trip to Canada. Turns out, she really was in Toronto for a few days.

The Duchess of Sussex managed to fly under the radar last week, enjoying a private trip to her former home city of Toronto, Canada. Sources have confirmed to Good Morning America that the Duchess quietly travelled to the city, where she was based while working on Suits, and stayed in the family home of her close friends Jessica and Ben Mulroney.

Meghan and her former stylist Jessica spent their days catching up, lounging by the pool and playing with Jessica’s three children – twin sons Brian and John, eight, and daughter Ivy, five. The source added that the kids “love seeing their Auntie Meg”. The Duchess and Jessica also enjoyed an evening out with close pals.

[From Hello]

The Mulroneys have proven time and time again that they keep information about Meghan locked down. In fact, I think that the rare times there is an unnamed source speaking positively about Meghan, it’s probably some kind of authorized leak from Meghan. I think it’s sweet that she had a few days to decompress with her friends in Toronto, and I like that her friends kept the info locked down while she was there.

Good for her. Everyone needs a good friend they can just be themselves with.

I just wish she wouldn’t let Jessica style her.

I was in Toronto last week as well. But I doubt the Duchess frequents my favorite roti take away or the used clothing shops in Kensington Market.

I was a little struck by how similar that dress seemed to something Kate wore hemline-wise when she was pregnant (the polka dot dress that people disliked?). I don’t know if that’s a criticism of Meghan necessarily, but superficially at a very brief glance they have certain physical similarities (thin and brunette and long hair) and it’s hard not to see some resemblance in how they wear things. If she looked completely different like Diana did from the both of them (blue eyes, blond, taller than the rest of the planet), I don’t know if I would have noticed as much.

Sometimes on the cover of magazines, I do a double-take when a picture of the both of them is put side by side. They look related and I’m a little amused that William and Harry kind of picked women who slightly resemble each other if you don’t look at them too closely (I’m saying this as a clarification because I don’t think they look EXACTLY alike, and I’m sure others don’t think so, but if you’re just walking really fast by a magazine aisle, they could, if you don’t look closely enough, look like sisters).

That said, I like the dress. Have no idea if it fits the dress code, but I like the simplicity of it. I have a hard time believing Jessica Mulroney picked it out though — that lady has bad taste. She may be a great friend, but I’ve seen her Instagram and she looks like a lady who lunches with the Real Housewives, not someone who actually dresses for any kind of professional role. It actually seems a little exhausting to be her because you can tell she spends a lot of time trying to mismatch things to keep up with 21 year olds.

I think the point is… People police Kate’s hemlines for no reason, but they’re fine with MM wearing shorter hemlines. If you’re going to criticise Royals, consistency is the key. For example, call Harry & William out for their conservation projects and shooting/hunting, not just one. Instead of making up excuses, call Sophie out for her spending in the same way people go on about Kate’s spending. The people policing Kate’s shorter dresses & skirts sound like hypocrites when they talk about Meghan’s outfits which I find really amusing.

      • bonobochick says:

No, i don’t think that is her point at all. I think she’s pointing out the people who criticize everything Meghan wears or does to make her seem less than Kate and to make seem the absolute best about everything.

I don’t think [many] folks had problems with Kate wearing short skirts or loose hems. I think people had issues when her outfits weren’t thought out for a specific activity or event and she would end up flashing people her underwear.

I thought Meghans dress a really tasteful way to do a dress with a shorter length. Short, made her look good, but not too short.

Been looking for something similar online. Turns out she went with a moderately priced piece. No luck yet in my price range.

Kate has had more than one or two crazy disasters with hems and wind.

Surely none of her helicopter rides are spur of the moment, right?

If you know riding in a chopper is on the morning to do list, why not wear something that won’t flash your undies, or worse your bare butt?

Not a crime, she’s probably very nice. But geez!

The fact that Jessica Mulroney has ZERO mention of Meghan around wedding time made me respect her so much. As a stylist, selling herself and her clients is her bread and butter – and many of Meghan’s other friends, Priyanka Chopra, Serena Williams, many of the suits folks and even those not AT the wedding (looking at you Millie Mackintosh) had pictures/mentions of the royal wedding (for whatever reason, but ahem self promotion) – nothing from Jessica. That, I think speaks volumes about their friendship.

You know that saying? Friends are god apology for family…couldn’t be more true in this case, I think.

Now if only she would stop messing around with her face!!

    • Evangeline says:

I suspect Mulroney, given her ties to prominent political families, understands that discretion is valued (& rewarded). It may or not may not come naturally to her.

Shade: She does seem to be quite the exhibitionist on Instagram.

      • Clare says:

I meant on instagram! I mean her brand is selling ‘luxury’ and ‘style’ or whatever, so I’m not surprised her Instagram is like that – I AM surprised she hasn’t traded, at all, on her very tangible royal connection – whereas almost everyone else has, for whatever reason. It makes me like her. And also kind of relieved that Meghan has at least someone other than her mum who isn’t trying to make a buck off her.

    • Lilly says:

Yes, loyal and discrete friends are a godsend. Family you create is so necessary at times.

      • Aurelia says:

She is probably under a legal gag order.

      • RoyalSparkle says:

        -1
Mulroney has been ‘riding the coattails’ stylist friendship along with all her kids. A lot of social media chatter/photos of her friendship – she is no better than Piddy.

Look at the Duchess Sussex other friend from CA, USA with her two daughters in the Wedding – Very respectful and discreet.

I love that dress. Slightly less plunge on top and 1inch longer and I would so want it.

Less is so often more. Which this woman does so well. It’s not the dress or the make up you first see and notice. Its just her looking great.

And it’s a dress that would look great anywhere. And the shoes.

I love her minimal outfits, colors and cut are so perfectly put together.

  6. savu says:

If you were a royal with constant paparazzi pressure, who would you rely on to be your most trusted best friend to keep your visits and secrets under wraps? I’ve known my best friend since high school and she would keep my shit on lock. Anybody is lucky to have friends like that!

  7. hershey says:

And I have seen some pictures of her friend Jessica in really loud not great outfits. That’s a mystery for me.

  8. girl_ninja says:

I’m glad that Meg has the Mulroneys. Best friends are a lifeline for me. I can only imagine how valuable they are for a royal like Meg. Of course there is no one like Megs.

  9. Beth says:

I thought this said Mulaneys at first and got really excited.

  10. Reese says:

Does this mean Italy happened? I wasn’t convinced, now I’m wondering!

    • Amani27 says:

I do think Amal and Meghan have a good friendship going on. They can both benefit from the relationship and they have quite a bit in common.

  11. Leigh-Klein says:

Because that’s what real friends do. They don’t sell info to the press or betray confidences.

  12. Amani27 says:

As her stylist, I assume JM is using her name because I’ve seen multiple SM posts referencing JM and MM when it comes to selling different pieces.

  13. MaryContrary says:

I follow Jessica on IG-not a mention of Meghan ever. I am sure that Meghan values her friendship and discretion. Ahem.

  14. Flying fish says:

Well someone spoke to the press and confirmed the trip…
JM’s sense of style is not great and certainly not the work of a professional.
    But, friendships count.

    • Addie says:

Someone clearly did. All the royals can and do travel under the radar when they want to and can stop publication of that information/ photos when they want to. I mean, Harry and Meghan traveled under the radar for more than a year. There are few candids these days, few real scoops. So when stuff like this becomes known, it has been sanctioned by royals, that’s the long and short of it. We need to remember that whenever we see anything, regardless of our perceptions of said royal.

    • RoyalSparkle says:

      +1000

All these ‘friends of the Duch’ PR reporting to the papers how ‘The Duchess and her father …. ‘ and now, the papers got the message she was in Canada, and stayed with the stylist family …!

  15. Princessk says:

I am pleased that Meghan wore a shorter length, if only to prove that she is still her own person and not afraid for people to see her knees. I thought she looked lovely and the couple are a big hit still wherever they go and whatever they do.
