Jennifer Garner tried to get shoppers to taste her baby food and failed for the most part

Jennifer Garner is promoting Peppermint, her action revenge film directed by Taken’s Pierre Morel and written by Chad St. John (London Has Fallen, not a good recommendation for his skills). She did a brief video interview with People about training physically for the role and about her character’s motivation. I came away from this wanting to know more about her MMA training in particular. I sometimes do dance workouts on PopSugar fitness with her aerobics trainer, Simone De La Rue, and I would be interested in the other stuff she did to get so fit. (I think it’s specific to stunts for this this film though and I hate burpees and weight lifting so I don’t know why I care.) Garner leans heavily into the mom fighting for her family angle, which makes me think she took this role to help further her image. It will likely work, especially if it’s well received. Here’s some of what she said and you can see the video on People.

“I was excited right from the jump. The first time I read the script for Peppermint because it’s an original story and there’s a strong woman at the middle.

“My character, Riley, watches this happen in front of her. She sees the people who killed her family,” Garner says. “She discovers the police and the people who should be helping her are all on the wrong side of the law.

“I’ve been training for a while on this. I did MMA skills, gun skills, knife skills. It was the connection to the physical that made me kind of understand her fight for her daughter. The action is smart and the fights are smart and they’re all me. What would you fight for more than your family?”

Notice how she said that her character was fighting for her daughter, even though her character’s husband was killed too. I’ve been thinking about the fact that Ben’s rehab stay ended up happening right before Jen’s movie premiere. I’m sure it was just a coincidence, but it made her seem stronger and more able to fight for her family, you know? You wonder sometimes if celebrities end up playing roles in their personal lives to fit the image they’re trying to portray and if they’re even aware of it. Even when I was barely dabbling in Facebook I noticed was making choices that would make for better photos and posts. Imagine how it would be if you had millions of Instagram followers, photographers following you around all day and the press covering your family outings.

Speaking of content for social media, Jen recently went to Cincinnati, Ohio to ask shoppers at an area Kroger (grocery store) if they wanted to try her organic baby food, Once Upon a Farm. She wasn’t wearing makeup and was unrecognizable (to non gossip fans, all of us would recognize her) to shoppers, who invariably turned her down. We know this because of her Instagram story about it. Whose idea was it to ask shoppers to try baby food? The market is moms, not average people shopping, and most people won’t have occasion to ever buy baby food after they’re past the parenting stage. Plus, even moms don’t usually want to try baby food because it tastes terrible. It makes for a cute video of Jennifer Garner getting turned down. Some Kroger employees tried it, as did a sweet baby. You can see her video on Instagram if you follow her today, and here are some screenshots.

I live in Cincinnati, and had no idea she was here at a Kroger. I wonder which Kroger- Cincinnati is where Kroger started, and we have so many around here. I get why no one stopped- when I am grocery shopping, unless you are my kid’s buddy in the deli, I am on a mission to get in and get out. I don’t have time for weird samples and small talk.

The insta was funny, that baby was so cute looking for seconds.

Some baby food is delicious—I loved the puréed pears. Like applesauce with a hint a rose.

When my little brother was eating baby food, my mom had to quit buying the bananas with pineapple because 10 year old me was eating that shit up. lol I’d eat it now if I had a little jar of it sitting here.

Way back when my 38 year-old brother was a baby, they used to have baby food desserts (now that seems crazy, lol!) and my mom used to buy my sister and I a jar of the rice pudding as a treat every once in a while. I cannot tell you why a 7 year-old and a 4 year-old used to think the baby rice pudding was manna from heaven, but we loooooved that stuff.

Are you joking? Baby food tastes great – bland, since there’s no salt, but great. Especially the puréed mangoes. I’m telling you, there’s an alcoholic smoothie just begging to made from it. Pineapple juice + mangoes + rum?

    It’s good.

    Awww…. Bless her heart.

I think the biggest issue is that manufacturers are buying less-than-top-quality produce for their baby products, since they know that it is unlikely any adult will ever taste it. I’ve never tasted any that was “awful,” but all of it was awfully boring. I don’t think people understand that while, sure, salt may not be the best for baby, seasonings sure as hell won’t hurt! No one wants to eat plain ol’ pureed veg unless 1) the veg are really high quality and 2) they have some kind of seasoning. I had some carrot and pea puree. It tasted mostly like water. They could have roasted those carrots first. It won’t hurt a baby to eat roasted carrot. They could have added some dill. They could have…etc. I’m sure her baby food is much higher quality (and much more expensive) than standard brands, but I guarantee you it’s still just boring, liquefied vegetables and fruit. I don’t even have kids, but every time I am in the care of children I ALWAYS try the food before I give it to the kids (I would never feed someone something I’m unwilling to at least try myself). Let’s just say I am unsurprised that they usually fuss and spit the food out, or that the most popular flavors include bananas, which actually make the puree taste sweet and, well, like bananas. I’ve never tried any other flavors that didn’t taste like someone spilled a gallon of water over the remains of someone’s dinner.

    Good luck, Jen.

Actually, yes, seasonings can hurt babies. Their stomachs are extremely sensitive, and many foods will cause them to have reactions. you even should not give them more than one new fruit or veggie at a time, because they can have reactions. They are just learning how to chew and swallow food. Their tongues are also very sensitive, so what is bland to us is flavorful to them.

Unfortunately, there are alot of name brands (Beech Nut / Gerber )& off brands Great Value (Walmart) & we have an Aldi brand, that is only $.79 i have tried their mixed fruit with Fairlife Milk & it makes a great smoothie! ( And it has 25 grams of protein ) All of these are not in the refrigerated section, though. I am going to try these soon.
They need to market this not just as baby food but also smoothies for the ones that are more fruit based…

HaHa…….I think this story is a nice hilarious advertisement for “once upon a farm”.

I love Kroger I’m there almost daily

  9. Sojaschnitzel says:

I love baby food! I have so many food allergies and I can hardly ever eat stuff in restaurants, so I have to cook aaaallll the time and it’s quite annoying. Sometimes I just eat vegetable baby food and call it a day. It’s quite tasty even.

I think Jennifer needs to stop trying to make herself ‘happen’ and I am tired of her super mommy persona. Martha Stewart has cornered the domestic goddess market and trying to launch a baby food brand isn’t really working, is it?

Jennifer as it is has an orderly life that seems manageable enough, so why the gimmicky behavior all the time?

  11. Patty says:

It’s not exactly baby food but Peter Rabbit Organics are legit. I could eat the apple grape one all day er’ day.

I think her being turned down was staged for comedic effect. Could be wrong but if it wasn’t she was a good sport for posting it!
