Pete Davidson joked about how stupid he was to get tattoos for Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande dumped Pete Davidson last week as you know, which is a lifetime ago for the two of them. She returned his ring and they have reportedly been getting support from their families. People quotes a source who says that Ariana is focusing on her work but that her friends and family are worried. Ariana performed last Tuesday for the upcoming Wicked special on NBC, which will air October 29th. She was seen with a bandaid covering the little tattoo of Pete’s name she has on her left ring finger. Pete has been trying to cover up some of the many tattoos he has for Ariana, something he had to do when he split with Cazzie David too. So when Pete joked at a gig over the weekend that he was stupid to get tattoos for a relationship that was a few weeks old, note that he did it for his last girlfriend and that his tattoo artist warned him not to do it. It’s not like he was dumb in love in this one instance. He joked during the performance that he was “0 for 2 in the tattoo department,” which could be interpreted as regret for just two tattoos. He’s referring to getting tattoos for two different girlfriends though, because he got around six tattoos for Ariana. To Pete’s credit, he was doing a benefit performance and he showed up despite needing to pull out of an earlier gig right after the breakup. Here’s some of what he said, thanks to US and E!:

[Pete Davidson performed] at the Judd and Pete for America benefit at Largo at the Coronet in West Hollywood on Saturday, October 20.

“Anybody have any open rooms?” he said. “I’m looking for a roommate.”

[Pete] was “not too down” and “laughing at some of his own jokes,” a source told Us. He gave further insight into his current mental state when an audience member interrupted him to ask about DBT, a.k.a. dialectical behavior therapy (the same type of treatment Selena Gomez is currently receiving).

“This is what they tell you when you have mental illness … they go, ‘Oh, you’re sad? Hold onto a pack of ice.’ Nobody knows what the f–k they’re doing … I’m f–king paying $2,000 dollars a session to hold f–king ice cubes,” he told the crowd. “They’re like, ‘Yeah, you’re sad. Go listen to music.’ ‘Oh, thanks! Never thought of that.’”

He continued, “They’re like, ‘When you’re sad, you should distract yourself … all that stuff is bullshit … The only reason why I do all that stuff is so that way [like I], in my head, I’m like, ‘Well, I did it.’ I know it’s not gonna work, but I tried.” – From US

“So, obviously you know I, we [Ariana and I] broke up or whatever but when me and her first got engaged we got tattoos,” he later continued. “And it was like in a magazine like, ‘Was Pete Davidson stupid?’ And 93% of it said yes,” Davidson told the audience. “So my boy, he was like, ‘Don’t listen to that s–t man. They’re literally f–king haters.’ And I’m like, yeah, f–k that. I’m not stupid. And the other day we were in my kitchen and he was like, ‘Yo bro. Turns out you were stupid.'”

[Organizer Judd] Apatow praised Davidson for showing up at the show, which took place three days after he was photographed for the first time since the breakup news, walking in New York City.

“Well, you put me on the flyer, I had to,” Davidson said, joking, “F–k my feelings.”

“I care more about America than your feelings, I do,” Apatow joked. “I care more about America than Pete’s feelings.”

“I feel like I am America,” Davidson said. “I’m a good guy that just keeps getting kicked in the dick. You’re like, ‘Ah, that f–king poor kid. Hope he doesn’t kill himself.’ That’s America.” – From E!

[From US and E!]

Most of that sounds funny and self deprecating except for the last part where he says he’s “America” because he’s a good guy who keeps getting kicked down. He still has his gig on SNL despite the fact that he can’t keep a straight face through most of the sketches. Most comedians would kill for that. (Did you see Don’t Think Twice?) I do think he’s funny but don’t consider him a standout. He may be heartbroken but he’s not down on his luck or persecuted because a pop star came to her senses and dumped him. He massively raised his profile from dating Ariana and he’s only going to get more opportunities from here. The dude has 2.5 million followers on Instagram despite not having any content.

Pete reminds me of jimmy Fallon, he’s only somewhat funny and he can’t keep a straight face during skits on snl. And look at jimmy, his own late night show.

    • OriginalLala says:

straight white guys have a tendency to fail upwards!

    • SequinedHeart says:

Jimmy Fallon sucks. He laughs manically at everything his guests say when it may only be mildly funny, or not funny at all. Painful.
I think Pete Davidson is slightly better with his style than Fallon.

      • Yes Doubtful says:

It’s painful to watch him try to interview people. The only time Fallon is amusing is when he’s being his true self (mean/sarcastic) around celebs he’s friends with like Blake Shelton.

  2. ByTheSea says:

Self-fulfilling prophecy, Pete. He kept saying he was afraid she’d come to her sense and dump him and voila! She came to her senses and dumped him.

    • Jessica says:

I get why he said it’s his self deprecation sense of humour but I feel like when others said it it was pretty mean. I mean is he’s so beneath her though? This take only seems to be based on the idea that a pretty pop star should only date conventionally handsome men. Or maybe he wasn’t famous enough but I always find it weird that famous people should only date people with the exact same level of fame. Especially for famous women when we know that men are often threatened by powerful women.

    • Hikaru says:

He was just saying that to manipulate her into feeling bad for wanting to leave and put her under pressure to “prove him wrong”. It’s a classic abuser tactic.

      • Jessica says:

Wow some people are hell bent on presenting him as an abuser. He actually turns up for work and has a sense of humour about the break up. There’s zero evidence for this abuser narrative.

“He still has his gig on SNL despite the fact that he can’t keep a straight face through most of the sketches.” — SEE: Jimmy Fallon. He’s done pretty well for himself despite constant breaking and scene stealing.

Honestly, I give the guy credit. I understand how much easier it is to joke your way through dark parts of your life – I have a habit of doing it as well. It’s a coping mechanism that allows you to talk about it in a way that isn’t quite as depressing as being ‘real’. It’s also a guarded way of living, and it’s hard. But if it helps you get through something, there’s worse things you can do.

    • Clare says:

For what it’s worth, I think the not being able to keep a straight face thing is part of his Schtick.

I don’t find him that funny, but to me he seems like a decent guy. He seems fragile and I hope people can treat him with some kindness.

      • Esmom says:

I think it’s become part of his schtick, too. And I agree he seems fragile. My heart goes out to him.

      • Pamela says:

“He seems fragile and I hope people can treat him with some kindness.”

Agreed. It seems like there is a LOT of hate for him and I just don’t see why.

      • Erinn says:

Oh probably. But it was Jimmy’s too. There’s a lot of stories about him being difficult to work with because he kept breaking character, laughing uncontrollably and stealing scenes.

But otherwise, I do feel bad for the guy. He’s not perfect by any means, but I don’t like that he’s become the butt of a lot of jokes.

      • India Rose says:

I keep popping in to say this when his name comes up, but I think it’s relevant. His dad was a firefighter killed in 9/11. That’s got to be part of the fragility.

His openness about mood disorders is admirable. I do wish he’d stop joking around that there’s nothing that he can get from professionals. There are so many treatment options. We just have to keep trying until we find the right ones for us.

Depression and Borderline Personality Disorder have many treatments available and he is not alone.

      • Littlefishmom says:

I agree. Who is anyone to judge. He’s been ripped apart with comments about his looks too, which is so mean. Geez give the guy a break. He’s not a bad person.

  4. Desolee says:

My opinion, he is funnier than the other guys on update
My other faves are Seth Meyers and Trevor Noah (who has TOTALLY grown on me since the beginning)

  5. Steff says:

Yeah I don’t find anything he said funny, just sad and uncomfortable.

  6. Myrtle says:

I guess he knows which ones they are, but dude has so many damn tattoos, who can even find the Ariana ones? It’s like Where’s Waldo.

  7. Steph says:

One girl I met writes for a site too and thinks the break up is a publicity stunt for her next single. I mean, his manager is Scooter something.

  8. Snowflake says:

Guys, please cross your fingers for me, i’m selling my house! Please wish me big money and quick sale

    • AMA1977 says:

Good luck! We sold ours this summer and it was the most stressful thing, lol. Listed in early May and we were in our new home by the end of July. I hope it goes quickly and smoothly for you!

    • Mash says:

      GOOD LUCK boo…

  9. Canadian says:

If he’s doing DBT and talking about ice on his body (that’s a common tip to try to avoid self harming) it’s possible he has BPD, which is not easy to treat, or live with. He is also hinting at killing himself with that last statement. It’s good Ariana walked away, sounds like he has more recovery to do.

    • Wellsie says:

He’s been pretty open about his BPD diagnosis.

    • ...otaku fairy says:

“He is also hinting at killing himself with that last statement.”
I think and hope that comment was more of a crack on what’s been said about (and to) him during and after the relationship. From the time his relationship with Ariana started to now after the break up, people insisted that that would be his reaction to Ariana dumping him. But he has gotten some pretty bad hate too. He’s recently been falsely accused of doing something that would have been a sex crime if it had actually happened, and people were wishing death on him for that, telling him to kill himself. I feel sorry for both of them with that situation.

  10. Case says:

I do think Pete is a decent guy, but boy oh boy do I side-eye men who say things like “I’m a good guy who just keeps getting kicked down.”

  11. Canadian says:

Thanks Wellsie I looked it up as I didn’t realize he was public about the diagnosis. Hope he’s getting lots of help. DBT works well if he sticks to it.

  12. serena says:

And that’s why you should never get tattoos for anybody other than yourself, never a girlfriend/boyfriend or such.

  13. tealily says:

    Sure, “jokes.”

Seriously though, it must be really difficult to be obligated to appear publicly on a regular basis when you are openly going through something so personal.

  14. SM says:

Ohbso good for all those celebrities to have apubloc platform to talk how brave they are for coming out for a workcommitment after a break up with someone one dates for a brief minute. None of us in the real world have ever been forced to be so brave. We burry our loved ones are forced to get back to work immidiately, have to take care of kids and provide food on the table and no one comes out and gives us praise for showing up for life. And yes, many also have psychological problems while doing all of that. But hey, none of us have it as hard as celebrities….sorry, but this is eyeroll enducing self absorbtion.

  15. Yes Doubtful says:

Most people didn’t know who he was before Ariana, he should be thanking her for the career boost. You know he’s going to “joke” about this and milk it for as long as possible.

And yes, you were stupid for getting tattoos of her Pete…and for thinking you’re mature enough for marriage after one month of dating.
