Taylor Swift used her Instagram to amplify the Snake Fam’s GOTV efforts

2018 American Music Awards

Taylor Swift’s rebrand as The Political Snake is probably my favorite version of her, quite honestly. It was just two weeks ago that Taylor decided to explicitly discuss who she’s voting for in the midterms and why, and she encouraged every member of the Snake Fam to get out to vote. Voter registrations skyrocketed, and Taylor did something unique: she asked her fans to send her photos and videos of themselves once they (early) voted. Over the weekend, she posted some of those images within an Instagram Story:

If you thought you’d seen the end of Taylor Swift’s highly charged political posts, think again: Political Taylor is back, and this time she’s taken to Instagram to double down on her ask that her fans vote in the midterm elections. On Saturday (October 21), the singer uploaded a series of photos to her Instagram stories, all reposts of her fans mobilizing at the polls over the last few days. With 22 photos in total, Swift’s Instagram story sends a big message: The star is not backing down on using her social platforms to voice her political views, even if that means losing a few conservative male fans along the way.

At various times, Taylor has done such good work that I’ve declared a ceasefire on criticism for a certain amount of time. I think I may have to do that again. For the next three weeks, I will not talk any sh-t about Tay-Tay. I will not criticize her or mock her snake tendencies. She’s doing good work.

You know who else thinks Tay is doing good work? Katy Perry, her old nemesis. Katy has “liked” a few of Taylor’s political IGs and when asked about Taylor’s nu politics, Katy said “she’s setting such a great example.” For what it’s worth, I thought Katy was setting a great example in 2016 too – she went full ride-or-die for Hillary Clinton, appearing at several events around the country with Clinton. It’s nice that Katy is acknowledging that Taylor is making a difference too.

Also: this isn’t sh-t-talking but I do agree with many of you that something IS different about Taylor’s face.

There’s a lot different about her face. That bottom picture, she looks like Bryce Dallas Howard.

The only thing I am seeing that is so different about Tay’s face is that she is wearing much softer makeup. The severe eyeliner and red lips have been softened. I think she looks great, personally.

Fillers, top lip and higher cheekbone.

For all the conservative male fans she may lose, she’ll gain me as a fan. I’ve been indifferent but this is great work she’s doing.

Like others on this thread – what has Tay done to her face. She looks different and its not the hair and makeup. I like her hair this colour and style, she really suits it and I like bangs (sue me).

I like this new Tay, the one that is not afraid of alienating some of her fan base to encourage them to do the right thing.

keep it up Taylor! We need all hands on deck right now!

I think she had some subtle nose and lip work done?

  7. Becks1 says:

Good work Taylor! keep it up!

There is definitely something different about her face but I cant tell to what extent it is make up (her make up looks softer overall?), the different hair color (I like that shade on her), and actual work.

It’s kinda funny that now she can’t stop talking about voting, lol. Good for her. I’m glad she’s continuing to encourage her fanbase to get politically active. I also think it’s important that she’s doing this to simply encourage people to vote for whoever they believe is qualified for the job, not just who SHE wants them to vote for. She laid an excellent case for her candidates of choice, but encouraged everyone to educate themselves and choose whose values/causes they align with most. I think that’s an excellent way to engage young people. Trump was elected, in part, due to voters who didn’t take the time to educate themselves.

As Tip O’Neil once said, and as all politicians forget at their peril: “All politics is local.” I think she is genuinely concerned about who represents her in the Senate and there is a race in her state this year that matters to her. She doesn’t want Marsha Blackburn doing damage in her name. But she has expanded beyond just the local race to encourage her followers to vote and to consider their choices carefully. That’s a good message. I can’t stand the woman but she’s doing good things with this. I also think the response of the right-wing extremists like Charlie Kirk telling her to shut up while they applaud Kanye for demonstrating poor judgment and poor management of mental illness, may have spurred her to go beyond her initial statement. They could have ignored her but they poked the snake’s nest.

She’s gained a decent amount of weight, so I think it’s filled out her cheeks and softened her features significantly rather than being so sharply angular. If she’s had any work done, I think it’s been relatively minor – maybe a nose tweak or a little lip plumping, but nothing dramatic. The softer makeup and natural lip colors are enhancing the effect.

  10. MousyB says:

Shes always had full lips so i dont think she got anything done there – i think shes wearing different makeup and maybe had some sort of laser/skin treatment done. If she got a nose job it was super subtle (maybe one of those ‘filler nose jobs’ where you dont go under the knife?

  11. Moop says:

I don’t want to derail an important political message, but does anyone know what lipstick she’s wearing in the bottom pick?

  12. Beth says:

It might be weight gain, lighter colors on her face, less eye makeup, or maybe just aging, but something looks different and it looks nice. Taylor’s one of the lucky ones who looks good with bangs

In the throes of procrastination last night I scrolled through some of the Taylor Swift tumblr tag and saw people really happy that she had included them in her story or had their posts liked by her, others crossing their fingers that she might like their voting posts, and others lamenting that they can’t vote in the US in the hopes that “Taylor might notice me!” I had really underestimated how much her hardcore fans want that tumblr or instagram like. It would be really incredible if this actually moved the needle. I mean, if you’re willing to buy 13 copies of her album you’d totally make sure to vote for a chance at her attention- it’s free.

Maybe something with her teeth too? They were always so prominent and chipmunky but that seems softened.
