Miley Cyrus calls Liam Hemsworth her ‘survival partner,’ ‘that is why you pair up’

Miley Cyrus arrives at BBC Radio 2

Miley Cyrus is the musical guest along with Mark Ronson on this week’s Saturday Night Live. They have a new song out, Nothing Breaks Like a Heart. It doesn’t really do anything for me but it’s good to see her recording again. Miley swung by Howard Stern’s radio show to talk up what’s going on with her, and Howard asked about Miley and her longtime romantic whatever, Liam Hemsworth. Howard pressed Miley for clarification on Liam’s role in Miley’s life and she said she calls him her “survival partner.”

[Miley Cyrus] was a guest on Howard Stern’s radio show on Wednesday, December 12, when he asked her to clarify her relationship status with the Isn’t It Romantic actor, 28.

“This is your boyfriend. Fiancé?” the 64-year-old radio host asked.

“Yeah … kind of-ish,” Cyrus explained. “My partner — I call him my survival partner now. And he thinks it’s not romantic, but I learned that is why you pair up with someone, for survival.”

The couple recently went through a trying time when their Malibu home was destroyed in November as a result of California’s Woolsey wildfires. While the event was traumatic, the “Wrecking Ball” singer said she “never loved [Hemsworth] more” than when she saw him spring into action to save their animals.

“He got all the animals out in his truck. He put two pigs in crates. And I said, ‘How did you get them out?’ And he said the only thing he could do was get a really powerful hose and sprayed then in the ass,” she recalled. “So he just chased the pigs into crate, which was genius.”

I am not terribly romantic so I like the title of Survival Partner, especially in an us against the world sort of way. My guess is Miley came up with this designation after their house burned down, in which case, it’s apt. The emotional and physical toll of something like that usually either brings you closer or tears you apart. I completely understand what she’s saying about her feelings watching Liam save the animals. I’ve had similar feelings watching The Mister hold a sick pup throughout the night. Hell, I think I fell a little in love with the Lesser Hemsworth myself when Miley told that story. I don’t think Liam and Miley will get married. Not only did they say as much a year ago, but it seems that removing the pressure of marriage has been really good for their relationship. They seem much more relaxed.

If anyone is watching SNL’s Holiday episode this Saturday, Miley confirmed to Howard that Sean Lennon will join her and Mark for their performance of Happy Xmas (War is Over). That is one of my least liked Christmas songs but watching Sean sing it may make me weepy so I’ll likely check it out. Wonder if Liam will do a cameo in whichever skit Miley will do.

I still find heir relationship weird, but what do I know?
Chris seems super happy with the super thirsty Lady of the Castle, which I also found weird but here we are. So maybe these crazy kids will work it out too.

    • BorderMollie says:

Not weird so much as it’s obvious she loves him desperately and he’s not into it nearly as much, if at all. She’s annoying, I know, but there’s something deeply sad about her to me.

“Not weird so much as it’s obvious she loves him desperately and he’s not into it nearly as much, if at all.”

That’s how I read it to

      • emms says:

I don’t see it that way. He is much quieter in social media and media in general. He’s not a performer that has to talk about his private life. When they were separated he obviously was open to them coming back together.

      • ikki says:

        agree @emms

    • Nikki says:

They’ve been together longer than some Hollywood marriages!

  2. Erinn says:

I really am rooting for these two. They have seemed closer than ever for a while now – and it’s sweet. Glad he managed to save the animals- he’s won some brownie points in my eyes.

    • Esmom says:

I agree, they do seem sweet. Brownie points from me, too. Also, he’s looking good as he ages a little.

  3. Alexandria says:

Whatever they are as long as they support each other, that is cool and I think she needs that strength from the support the most. I have a soft spot for her growing up as a child star and the thought of her being potentially abused while growing up is sickening. I hope she is no longer friends with that photographer too.

    • otaku fairy says:

She’s never said that she was abused though. Since we don’t automatically label women as victims of child sexual abuse based on the country they’re from, what era they grew up in, or their family’s religious background, we shouldn’t do it to women just because they were child stars. I don’t think you meant anything bad by it though, and really don’t mean this as an attack on you. Women in the public eye already get way too much sexist/rape culture crap projected on them, and she’s definitely one of many who grew up with online strangers projecting their internalized misogyny on her.

      • Mash says:

nah but a lot of them have been…its not a misogny trope….its actually rather real in the industry, hell a lot of parent even know and push their children towards that. Alexandria may have been on to something.

I mean i would you ever explain that to the public….the horror.

    • Alexandria says:

Yup don’t worry, maybe I wrote this wrongly. I know she never claimed to be abused but I’m thinking of all the gossip around Disney and of course the metoo movement.

      • Otaku fairy... says:

Yeah. One of the main reasons why that gossip about all the disney girls exists (besides the fact that some just assume that about all child stars) is because of an old misogynistic myth that all ‘Bad Girl’ behavior/dress is a symptom of childhood sexual abuse. The patriarchy has pushed the idea that female sexual modesty is our worth (and safety) so hard and for so long that when any woman decides that she doesn’t want to live up to that ideal anymore (or at all), it’s assumed she must be just ‘ too raped to know better’ or devoid of self-respect. It’s another way women who don’t meet patriarchal standards of respectability and morality are dehumanized by both sides. It’s hard for people to see modesty and other ‘Good Girl’ traits as things some women could genuinely want to rebel against. Misogynistic blind gossip sites will of course play into that. It’s just best to go with believing women when it comes to an issue so serious.

She’s had some work done on her eyes.

  5. girl_ninja says:

This fraud is still such a mess.

  6. Enn says:

I actually really like her new song, and I’m happy that they’re happy together.

  7. Purplehazeforever says:

That’s love right there.. She picked a good partner, she just didn’t express it in the most eloquent terms. It’s Miley..though. I’m sure she’s passionate about Liam but it’s been a trying time and he’s shown up. She adores those animals & he saved every one of them. I’m sure he cares about them, too..but they are her babies. They allegedly broke up the first time because of his family & he was miserable without her. He accepts her for who she is.

  8. Veronica S. says:

They’re cute. I really hope it works out for them this time around.

Thank goodness he was there to get the animals out. I’m only mildly concerned about the real estate itself since they’re rich, it can be replaced, but I do feel for her losing all of her creative work and personal memorabilia. I’ve lost writing before, and it always hurts because there’s no way to fully replicate what you’ve written in the moment, what you were feeling and thinking when you wrote it.

  9. asdf ert wreetra says:

I really like the concept of Survival Partner.

    • Some chick says:

Yeah, this really resonates with me as well.

    • BchyYogi says:

“A man of the apocalypse” has always had an appeal, builds things, knows things, sexy to me for a long eternity of no other men on the planet etc.

  10. Marty says:

She would sing a Lennon song…one of the worst Christmas songs ever, too.

  11. BANANIE says:

As someone who considers themselves romantic, I still like the term “survival partner.” Because it could be through tragedy or grief or sorrow, but it could also be for a shitty day, a misunderstanding with a loved one, etc, etc. Sometimes getting through each day can be tough, and it can be awesome if there’s someone you’re paired up with to help you do it.

I don’t think making it about survival makes it any less about love.

  12. Case says:

They seem like a really good couple. I think they’re in it for the long-haul, or at least several more years to come. I am a romantic but I love the term “survival partner” — two people who can lean on one another for support, share all secrets, and feel vulnerable together. I actually think that’s incredibly romantic.

The idea of marriage seemed like it was weighing them down — good for them for taking things slow if it was too much too soon.

  13. Jegede says:

All I can say on Miley, is that I found her engagement ring to be just beautiful.

    In size and shade.

    • xdanix says:

She still wears it. Not all the time, but a lot. She was just wearing it in photos taken in London a few days ago. She might have taken to calling Liam her “survival partner” rather than fiance in the wake of the fire, but they’re still engaged.

  14. elimaeby says:

As a huge SNL fan (watched every episode since I was born and the whole back catalog, auditioned a couple of times), I’ve honestly loved every SNL appearance Miley has made. She’s just like her godmother Dolly. She is in on every joke about her and is so willing to laugh at herself. I’m so excited for this.

  15. Nikki says:

His rescue of the animals story, and the fact that the animals are such a huge priority to them both, makes me like them more than I ever have before. Their house and valuables might be going up in flames in minutes, but he’s desperately trying to shoo their critters into a truck with a hose! I’m very impressed, and emotional thinking about the fright and panic at the moment. Good for them!
