Beth and Howard Stern eat at 4, go to bed at 8 and wake up at 5: goals?

wenn35717508
Beth Stern was on Ellen last week. She’s hosting the Kitten Bowl! She’s Howard Stern’s wife, they’ve been together 20 years (Update: It’s possible she’s rounding up! That’s what she said on Ellen) and married 10, and she’s involved in cat rescue and fostering. They currently have four resident cats at home and 12 in their foster area. (She said she fosters 50 cats but I think some are at the North Shore Animal League.) On Ellen, Beth revealed that she and her husband, Howard Stern, have a schedule I envy. They wake up and eat at the same time I do but they go to bed earlier. Now I want to do this. I’ve seen her in interviews before but I can’t get over how sweet and likable she is. I also buy that she and Howard are tight like this. They sound like an old married couple. However Howard complained about Beth telling him to cheer up and outlets picked it up like they were breaking up.

“Does Howard like The Bachelor”
He loves it, we love watching it together. We have to watch it the next day because we go to bed at 8. [He wakes up] 4:45/5:00 and I wake up with him because I want to be with him. 20 years it’s been our routine together. Dinner is at 4.

“People make fun of me that I make reservations at a restaurant at 6”
We’re standing there knocking on a window.

Someone approached Beth and said she hopes things were ok with Howard
I said to Howard ‘You’ve got to stop walking around so grumpy.’ So he went on the air that morning and said ‘Oh my wife thinks I’m so depressed. I hope she still loves me.’ That’s what I think he said, I don’t listen to the show. I foster 50 cats. It’s serious business. The google alerts come ‘Howard and Beth Stern breaking up.’ Apparently he spoke about us and it spread like wildfire. 20 years of marital bliss. I’m setting the record straight. I love my Howard.

OK I do this! Go ahead and make fun of me but I get up at 4-5 am every day and eat dinner around 4 pm. If I sleep until 6 on the weekends it’s a treat. My body wakes me up at 5 usually no matter what. I also take naps in the afternoon. If I got a 9 to 5 job I would probably adjust, but I like working early and having my afternoons off. I go to bed around 9:30/10 and usually fall asleep on the couch watching a show before that and have to get woken up to go to bed.

A lot of people think if you go to bed early you’re missing out, but to me it feels luxurious like I’m treating myself. (I’m paraphrasing that from one of Gretchen Rubin’s Happier podcasts. She has a similar approach to her schedule and has explained it better than I can.) I would miss my time in the evenings watching TV with family and friends so I probably won’t go to bed at 8 every night. Maybe a couple of times a week though. Or I could just make my afternoon nap longer! That’s settled, I’m doing that today. A two hour nap is awesome.

Here’s her interview and I’m including some of her cat photos below.

We used to have a calico with this kind of face she was so cute

And we made fun about Mark Wahlberg?!

  2. Agirlandherdog says:

Her instagram is kitten therapy. Whenever you’re feeling down, you just open instagram, and BOOM. Beth’s kitten pics.

    • Jenns says:

I love her videos of Muffin.

    • sa says:

I adopted a kitten from the North Shore Animal League last year, from talking to staff I learned that her ID code meant that Beth Stern brought her in, or was responsible for her getting there. I don’t know exactly, but I do know that Beth Stern played a part, in some way, of getting my kitten to a shelter so she could be adopted.

It’s a bit of a weird feeling to be grateful to some person I’ve never met, but I am so grateful that her passion is rescuing cats. Because of her my sweet furball has a home.

    • SummerSky says:

Beth Stern is just the best. Her pics put a big ol smile on my face. She takes such great care of those little nuggets. Love how she finds homes for the older fosters as well.

I’ve recently begun to listen to Howard as a way to break up my MSNBC/CNN/NPR depression cloud on commutes and while he’s not always my cup of tea (Some stuff….uughhh…) his interviews are always amazing and he really is quite candid about his relationship. His time in therapy, struggles with depression, anxiety, just general dislike of people in general is pretty spot on. He’s a grumpy old man with a ton of issues and he just doesn’t give an eff anymore. I appreciate that kind fo self awareness, for all the other stuff that I can’t tolerate about his show. But he’s constantly joking about what he puts Beth through (and she him). I think if you listen to the show it’s pretty obvious Howard knows what he has and he’s just as baffled as the rest of us.

    • LNG says:

My husband listens to Howard every day. I can’t listen to most of the filler that they do, but I like the news and I agree, his interviews are amazing. He is definitely one of the best interviewers working right now. His ability to make people talk about just about anything is amazing.

    • sequinedheart says:

Sunnydaze, I agree! I started listening to him because my husband always had him on in the car. I find certain things extremely juvenile but the more I learned about his crew, their back story and how he takes care of his team, I was like ok – this dude has the goods to back the grumpiness. He’s seen some sh*t.
He honestly is one of the best interviewers – he has a talent of not talking too much and letting people just open up and spill their guts. I’ve learnt so much more about certain people I’d previously judged on whatever basic level because of an interview they did with him.

    • kristen says:

I’m not baffled. The dude is a millionaire many, many times over.
The less cynical side of me also says he’s an incredible listener.

  4. Kitten says:

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with that. My BF and I typically go to bed around 10, but sometimes earlier if we’re both tired. If I’m home alone because he’s working a late shift or a game at the Garden, I’m in bed at 8PM, even if I’m up watching shows on my laptop until 9 or 10PM. And yes, it DOES feel luxurious and like a treat. I love it 🙂

I’m a Howard fan and I absolutely LOVE Beth. I follow her on IG and she does such amazing work for kitties. I sometimes feel bad when I see comments from regular folks who don’t have the connections or high profile that Beth is lucky enough to have. These small shelter operations and foster homes really struggle to get their kitties adopted whereas Beth’s cats usually go within days. I have so much love for people who do the work of saving animals and it’s why I donate monthly to a handful of small cat shelters in the New England area.

    • Erinn says:

Hahha, we’re in bed by like 9 at the latest on work nights. We’ll watch an episode or two of something fluffy before falling asleep, but still. The other night I crashed hard and I was in my bed by 740. But I do the same – if I’m home alone, I’m in my bed by 8. We usually eat supper around 5/530. And are awake by 630 at the latest.

I ENJOY my routine. It works for us haha.

  5. elimaeby says:

I’m not even a cat person, really, but I follow her Instagram and it always brightens my morning commute. She seems like such a genuine, sweet and caring person. I think she brings out a softer side in Howard (which I totally get because I am a bubbly goofball, and my SO is a total curmudgeon. He was a grumpy old man when I met him at 22). I really like them together.

  6. brooksie says:

I sat next to them at a restaurant in the Hamptons once and it was a very early dinner and the waiter said they are the nicest and most generous people… and always come in early haha.

    • elimaeby says:

This makes me happy to hear. I really like them and I love hearing that my favorite celebrities are actually nice in real life.

      • Snappyfish says:

I think she is really sweet & all the work for animals is amazing. I have always found Howard a great interviewer & I like News with Robin. Big fan of Fred’s. The only thing that bothers me in this post is the timeline. If they have been together for 20 years then there was overlap. He & Alison split in 1999 & divorced in 2001. I always thought Howard said he met Beth after he was divorced. I guess it doesn’t matter. Everyone is happy & that is what matters in the long run.

      • elimaeby says:

Snappyfish, I didn’t even notice that! The only thing I can think of is that she may be rounding up. I always say I’ve known my SO for ten years and we’ve been together for three. Honestly, I’ve only known him nine-and-some-change, and if we really were together for three, my divorce would technically not have been finalized yet. I’m definitely rounding up a bit, but it’s easier that trying to remember exactly.

At least, I hope that’s the case because I like these two.

      • brooksie says:

I know it made me happy too! I could tell by how they were interacting with the staff that they were very genuine. Once they left, we asked the waiter what they were like and he said they are incredibly kind and down to earth.

  7. Birdix says:

Mr Birdix works east coast hours so leaves the house at 4 each morning. Someone asked me if I got up to make him breakfast 😂. I work in performing arts so lots of late nights—rolled in from work at 2 one morning last week after a gala. Early bird/night owl works for us but I can see the appeal of being in sync.

  8. Jenns says:

This is close to my schedule. I get up at 5am, eat dinner around 5:30pm and am usually in bed by 9. And the latest I sleep in on the weekends is 7am. I have most of my energy in the morning, so this works for me. And I’m rarely tired during the day.

  9. Keira says:

    Yes to Gretchen Rubin!!

  10. LadyLaw says:

    Man…this is goals AF.

  11. A says:

I used to feel guilty or shame if I went to bed early but I do wake up early and it is a luxury to enjoy a long time to sleep. Others sleep late in the morning. I do it the other way round.

  12. AnneC says:

He needs to get up early for his job so he has probably been doing this forever, but I assume his first wife had to stay up past 8 to help out with their 3 daughters. My god those children must be so old now. That makes me feel old. I used to listen to Howard years ago and found him smart and funny, but the creepy misogynistic stuff was gross. Must be even more gross now that he’s a lot older.

    • Snowflake says:

Yeah, i hear he’s a nice person but some of the stuff on the show really put me off him. Rating women, etc. So i haven’t listened in years.

  13. AnnaKist says:

Meh. I’m a night owl. I’m up at 5:30am, after going to bed around 1am. I’m a teacher – first day back tomorrow, oops, today, after the summer holidays, so I might be a bit fuzzy for a couple of days, specially with the continuing heatwave. I start work at 8:30, get home at 4, when I start dinner, chuck on some washing, a bit of housekeping and feed all the pets. Then my daughter and her partner arrive home from work. They clean up after dinner, leaving me to plan lessons, research and/or prepare resources, mark books, answer emails, make calls blah blah blahbedy-blah, just like every other teacher, and indeed most regular person does. Then I get to sit and read my books – heaven. I’m sure the Sterns have a lot of help, and good for them. Not envious. I like my life. A lot.

I love your response. Newly single after a LONG marriage. I do love my life, but I find myself questioning everything. I haven’t lived alone in decades. Even though my IS full – part-time job, kitties, volunteer work, art, friends, family, daughter in college – there is that voice in my head saying but….what about this or that or this or that or why are you alone?

If you don’t mind my asking, are you single and happy about that?

    • AnnaKist says:

Sorry, greyate, I fell asleep after posting that! Yes, I’ve been single for 20 years, after my husband died following a long battle with cancer. I had a very good marriage, and during his battle, I constantly wondered how I’d cope on my own and raising two young kids – the oldest was 18 by then. I asked myself the same questions over and over again, but you know what? It somehow all works out. You build a new ‘’normal’’ without even realising it’s happening. You sound like you’re keeping up your interests, and that’s very good. I’m very happy being single. I’m not looking for a new partner to throw a spann into my nice life! Even though my daughter and her now fiancé live with me, I have my own private area in my home, so it’s not as if any of us gets in the way of each other. Just keep doing what you’re doing, stay positive and take each day as it comes. There’s nothing at all the matter with being ‘’on your own ‘’. If people ask why, just give them a withering look or a cheeky reply! You will be okay. Sending good wishes your way. 😋😋

  14. anniefannie says:

Unabashed Stern lover. He gives great interviews and loves taking the piss out of celebrities up their own ass. He’s the embodiment of , if your honest upfront with your audience you’ll win them over.

  15. Sparkly says:

That’s very similar to our schedule. Hubby gets up before 4 am for work, so we usually go to bed around 7:30. I get up at 6 to wake the kids and get them off to school (a very hard adjustment for me), and I try to have dinner ready when everyone gets home around 3:45-4pm.

  16. MoxRox says:

Not goals personally, but I would love having a schedule in sync with my spouse. I’m not a night owl or an early riser. My ideal schedule for both of us would be in bed by 12 midnight, up at 8 am, weekends 830 am – make breakfast, go for a hike, shower plus sexy time then whatever else the day needs. He can stay up until 5 in the morning, and you have to remove his body from the bed at noon. Having children will be a rude wake up call for him (and me!)

    • Snowflake says:

That’s how it is for my husband and I! He will literally stay up until 3 or 4 watching TV or video on days off! I like to go to bed around 11, wake up between 7&8. It’s a miracle if he gets up before 11 on his days off.

  17. Jb says:

This type of schedule is unattainable for most if not all people who work an 8-5 job. My husband and I are both active people who love a decent night of sleep. Wake up by 645 so we can be ready for work by 725, drive through traffic and at work by 8, off by 5, traffic, gym by 545, traffic, home by 645/7, dinner by 730, clean up by 830. Shower and relaxed by 9 and hopefully together/whatever time until bedtime at 1030/1045. Rinse and repeat. Fitting in a social life and everything else is hard!!!! So yea this schedule is not goals for me. I know if we have kids our schedules will be blown to bits along with sleep so yes I realize we’re a bit spoiled with having leeway with our time

    • Erinn says:

I guess it depends on where you live. I only have about a 12 minute drive to and from work. My husband is about 15 minutes away from his. His day ends between 4 and 5 depending on where he’s working at the time, and what needs to be done. For people who have to spend a lot of the time traveling to and from work I can see why that doesn’t work, though. If he goes to the gym that’ll add an extra hour to his schedule, but that’s about it. We don’t really go out through the week most of the time- we have weekends off and do a lot of our socializing then.

  18. Tiffany says:

If I had the money to do this, I totally would.

    This is goals.

  19. Jayna says:

    I love Beth.

I love being a nightowl and embrace it every chance I can get. No envy from me. And he hates going to bed at eight and having io be up that early every day that he works. It’s his job and why he has to do that.

  20. lucy2 says:

It’s a normal schedule, just shifted a little earlier than most people?
I’m more of a night owl, but the older I get, the earlier my schedule seems to be.

Not a fan of his, but I love all the animal rescue stuff she does!

  21. Sarah says:

She is extremely well-liked in Hollywood circles and apparently just as fun and vivacious as she seems in her IG and in interviews. I think it’s a great balance for Howard, who has been known to sink into self-loathing behaviors. I love both of them and happy they have each other.

  22. minx says:

They seem like a very happy couple. I’m there for all the cats.

  23. Jess says:

I loved Stern from Private Parts through the 2016 election. I know he was a vocal Hillary supporter but I also know a lot of his listeners were trump fans and they’d find support for their messed up viewpoints in some of what he said over the years. He was definitely an inspiration for the bro culture so now I feel guilty for listening to him. Plus, I’m ashamed I was ever okay with how he handled people with mental disabilities. (And, PS, I would hate his schedule.)

  24. LT says:

I used to be such a night owl, but I am now up before 6 am almost every day. I didn’t sleep much during my divorce and that reset my internal clock to be a morning person. It’s great for working out, as I can squeeze in exercise before my kids wake up.

  25. Snowflake says:

My mom and stepdad do this. Lunch at 11 a.m. Mom is 77 and he’s 80. When we go out to eat, they want to go at 4:30. I’m used to eating at 8 or 9

How old is she? So pretty. I’m sure she has work done but its subtle

  26. Grisgris says:

Long ago when they first started dating, they would come in to eat 3-4 times a week at a restaurant where I worked. I never cared for his show but they were both incredibly kind and sweet. He has the best manners, your grandmother would blush! They always came in super early for dinner (I assumed to avoid crowds), would get a nice bottle of wine and not drink it (meaning the waiters would) and would leave HUGE tips. We all adored him and she was gorgeous- still is.

  27. dlc says:

Move everything up by an hour and that seems like A doable schedule. Dinner at 4?! They must not have dinner with other people much, because that is really early! People laugh at me for eating at 6 when I can!

  28. Egla says:

Ugh what a schedule. I wake up at 6.10, I have to be at work at 8 and i have a 45 min drive. Back home at 4.30-4.45. I drink some milk in the morning and I take something to eat with me that I consume around 11-11.30. When I am back from work I might eat something light or nothing at all. Then I usually eat dinner around 8. During summer we eat even later. I go to bed at 11.30-12. During weekends I can sleep non stop all day if they let me.
I have lived for 5 months in Canada. My God they eat dinner starting at 5.30. It was terrible for me. As till 12 it was a long time without food I would go hungry every night. I need solids in my body. I started eating dried fruits or popcorn to tame my hunger before bed or else…

    • Andrea says:

Canadians are obsessed with TAPAS at least in Toronto and it is just not enough for me especially if I had a light lunch.

  29. Misty says:

Beth and Howard have been together since 2000. He and his first wife, Alison were separated since ’99. So he and Beth have been together nearly 20 years.

As for his daughters, his oldest is 35, and youngest is 25.

  30. RspbryChelly says:

I start work at 5am everyday so I had to basically train myself to go to bed earlier so I can feel better rested in the morning but going to bed at 8pm is just too early. Although, there are times when I feel so exhausted I doze off at 7 and just stay asleep till it’s time to wake up. All in all I enjoy having the afternoons off to do whatever I need to do.

  31. NicolettE says:

Love Beth! Her genuine adoration of kitties is inspiring. She seems so fun. I also love Howard. Not only is he an exquisite interviewer, he is a fantastic interviewee. My sister interviewed him while she was in college when he was doing publicity for Private Parts. He could not have been more interesting, forthcoming, and gracious. I didn’t know I’d adore strangers, but, I do!

  32. Granger says:

I’m a morning person — as in, I function best in the morning and can get a lot done. I’m wide awake by 5:00 and usually leave for work by 6:30. I wish I could go to bed at 8:00 every night but I have a 13 year old and a 14 year old who have evening activities, need help with homework, etc. I’m lucky if I’m in bed before 10:00. I know I don’t get enough sleep — which is sometimes very frustrating — but I also know I’ll be able to sleep a lot more when they leave the house in a few years, so I’m trying to cherish this time with them, even if I’m tired. 😀

  33. Anastasia says:

That’s close to mine. I eat dinner before 6, am in bed without fail BY 9, and I get up at 5:30 am. I don’t actually fall asleep at nine, but if I’m not in bed relaxing (reading a book or something) by then, I won’t get to sleep on time. I’m very protective of my sleep. 8 hours or bust. On the weekends, I sneak in a few extra hours. I don’t drink much caffeine, just the odd cup of Irish Breakfast tea some mornings.
