Duchess Kate wore green McQueen for her trip to the Irish Guards on St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick's Day Parade at Cavalry Barracks

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Several years back, the Duchess of Cambridge got “in trouble” for refusing to make her annual trip to visit the Irish Guards on St. Patrick’s Day. Her reasoning for that snub is still unclear, to this day, other than the excuse given around that time, which was along the lines of “Kate doesn’t want people to expect her to show up for annual events every single year, for reasons.” Well, as we’ve seen in the past year, Kate has found a brand new keen energy, so she actually shows up for these kinds of events and then some.

So, here are some photos of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge today at the Cavalry Barracks in Hounslow, home to 1st Battalion Irish Guards. I’m super-impressed that Kate got a new green coatdress – she tended to do recycled looks for St. Patrick’s Day, but this year she commissioned a new Alexander McQueen look with a vaguely military feel. The cut of this reminds me a lot of the McQueen look she wore to Remembrance Day last year – that Remembrance Day coatdress had a different collar, but otherwise the cuts (and buttons) are very similar.

And of course I’m including photos of the true star of St.Patrick’s Day every year, Domhnall the Irish Wolfhound, who lives with the Irish Guards and is, like, their mascot. Every year, Kate presents Domhnall with a cluster of shamrocks on his collar. Domhnall is a very good boy.

She looks lovely, but look at that dog. What a handsome fella.

    • Enny says:

That dog truly is a star 🤩

      • jan90067 says:

Irish Wolfhounds are gorgeous dogs! I would love to be able to have one (hardly a great pet to have in a condo though!). Has he ever nipped at anyone? Or did his predecessor? Somehow I’m remembering one year…?? Or was it the tiny horse at a different event?

Regardless, it looked like both were actually enjoying themselves today, Kate especially. I really don’t think this is Meghan’s doing (competitiveness). I just really have seen a different “light” in Kate since Louis’ birth. I think she’s just finally *really* happy and content, and that’s coming through in all aspects of her life.

Whatever it is, personal or competitive, I’m glad she’s seeming to be happier and more connected to her working life as well. Will didn’t look sour or “clenched” today (perhaps as yesterday and today involved drinking events? lol), so all around, I good day for all it seems!

      • Becks1 says:

        That dog really is gorgeous.

Re: Kate, I think it’s a combination of factors. I do think she is competitive (this is not an aspect of her personality that she has really hidden, and being competitive isn’t necessarily a negative quality), and I also think she just feels more comfortable in her role after all these years. Maybe it’s Louis’ birth, maybe Meghan’s arrival makes her feel more comfortable, maybe she is just better at faking it now – but she does come across as happier in a lot of these events.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

@Becks1 – ITA that its a combination of factors and I would include William being at home more as well. He doesn’t have his ‘part time’ air ambulance job any more and most his partying friends have all settled with families of his own, so I suspect that he is home with his family more than he was a few years ago. If you look back at the GF years, she always seemed happier when she had his full attention.

Am glad she is doing more, I hope it stays like this and is not a flash in pan like previous attempts to make her look ‘keen’.

      • feralchild says:

@jan90067 – you’re thinking of the pony, Cruachan IV, he bit Prince Harry and pooped during an audience with the Queen

    • noway says:

That dog is just the best, and Kate does seem to look really comfortable with the dog and putting the silly shamrocks on him. He doesn’t seem to care that much about it. I like both Kate’s and the dog’s coat!!!! Wonder if the dog’s is Alexander McQueen too?

As far as Kate looking more comfortable in her role. Who wouldn’t be? She’s had more time to adjust, and the press seems to be all after Megan and are a bit nicer to her.

    • LahdidahBaby says:

      He’s beautiful—and enormous!

    • fishface says:

The first thing I thought when I saw Kate was that my oldest friend’s parents had a sofa suite for years that was the exact same colour. Second thing I thought was whether she could be pregnant again. Face is slightly rounder and she is sort of glowing (maybe she’s stopped smoking?)

  2. IE says:

    She looks gorgeous here.

    • jan90067 says:

She really does: from hat to block heeled shoes (so much more appropriate than the spiked ones she got caught in the grate when she was pregnant with George). She looks very elegant today. I’m loving the braid around the low bun. I so wish I could wear heels like that (as I’m sitting here, recovering from foot surgery!). Le sigh… 😊.

Happy St. Paddy’s day to everyone! ☘️

      • LahdidahBaby says:

Yes, Happy St Patrick’s Day. Kate does look great, every element of her ensemble is perfect.

    • minx says:

Love it, from head to toe.

      • emerson says:

love, love, love. love, love the dog (he looks like the best cuddle buddy ever!!).
so, we know her Gianvito Rossi pumps were £510. but………..how much was this “commissioned” Alexander McQueen suit? The pair of special edition green amethyst and green tourmaline earrings from Kiki McDonough? That Lock & Co. hat (doesn’t matter if it’s a repeat)?
Where are the “royal reporters”, “royal protocol/ etiquette experts”, former employees/ “royal confidants” and monarchists, who on a daily basis complain about meghan’s attire (even when there’s evidence she wore it in 2015)?
happy st. patrick’s day! stay warm & safe

      • Glor says:

Love everything about all this ☘️
Just……happy-making all round. Nice job, everyone! *woof*
        Love Kate’s hat, a 40s vibe I thought.

  3. Dali says:

I love that coat, she looks gorgeous

  4. P says:

The dog is the star of the day! Kate looks the same every year… green coatdress… same brooch… boring.

    • Humbugged says:

Not a fan of Kate myself and I don’t know if you are being sarcastic (and it feels weird sticking up for her )

      But

It St Paddy’s Day and she is visiting The Micks so of course she is going to wear green ,its cold and windy so of course she wore a coat and the brooch is a legacy thing (the QMother wore it every year when she it was her job to hand out the shamrocks ,then Anne wore it when she filled in the time between the QM dying and Kate becoming the Colonels’ wife ,now Kate wears it)

      • Tina says:

I really wouldn’t use that word, it’s very inappropriate.

      • jan90067 says:

Please let’s stop using derogatory words for ethnic/religious groups. It’s really beneath us all. If we’re striving to make the world a better place, let’s please try and do it with kindness and acceptance.

ETA: after reading down, I saw that you said it IS the name of the group. I didn’t realize that. My apologies, Humbugged!!

(And while I know I’m going to sound like a hypocrite (and I *really don’t mean to*), I just can’t extend this to Trump’s base of neo-nazis and evangelical zealots. That is my cross to bear).

      • Tina says:

Ah sorry Humbugged, my knowledge of the forces is not what it should be. Rather puts Harry’s use of the “p” word in a bit more perspective.

      • noway says:

I think some missed the point the name of the regiment is The Micks. No one is calling any Irish people Micks. I had to read over the comment several times to understand what people were talking about. She is saying they visited the regiment whose name is called The Micks. By the way, the derogatory word is spelled either mic or mc, which for years wasn’t derogatory to Irish people. My Irish grandfather called himself one all the time. It originally came because so many Irish names begin with Mc. It used to be used in a friendly way. Some Irish still use it that way, although I think the slur won out to be honest at least in America. Pretty sure Italian New Yorkers and Bostonian are the one who started the slur of it, but I could be wrong on that.

In this instance though it is used as a proper name. The British army are not telling people what is offensive or not. Unlike some other slur words this one really isn’t offensive if used as a proper noun. The word should still be fine, or else Mick Jagger, Mickey Mouse, Mickey Mantle, and even maybe McDonalds may all have to change their names. Just kidding.

      • Reese. says:

@noway So now you’re telling Irish people how to spell? MICK also where taking the mick or the Mickey similar to taking the piss out of someone came from. I think you missed the point, we got it and understand the name of regiment. Walk into my local pub in Belfast with your American accent and call them Micks or a black mic in my families case and explain in a nice way you meant it in reference to Mc and see the lovely reaction that befalls you.

      • Tina says:

The name of the regiment is the Irish Guards. The nickname is the nickname, but it’s not for an individual person, the proper noun for the regiment is the Irish Guards. (The derogatory word is spelled the way humbugged spelled it).

    • Redburgandy says:

She’s attending a military event outdoors, what do you want her to wear a ballgown? She is wearing the appropriate attire for these kind of events including the brooch for the Irish guards.

    • Becks1 says:

I’ll drag her for her love of coatdresses in general, but for this event its appropriate and makes sense.

      • Humbugged says:

Tina says:I really wouldn’t use that word, it’s very inappropriate.

It’s the nickname of the Regiment – The Fighting Micks

It’s no more offensive than me saying that Queens’s uncle was a Black Jock (nickname of the Black Watch ) because that was what he was

Or the Scots Guards who are the Jock Guards

      • Cerceau says:

Humbugged, the word “Micks” derogatory when it’s used as a nickname for the regiment and it’s derogatory when you use it here.

      • Enn says:

It’s a self given nickname IIRC.

      • Reese. says:

        @cerceau you are not correct.
Born and raised in Belfast, where a lot of Irish Guards recruit from, I am familiar with this regimement. I’ve been called a “black mick” more times than I want to remember, however, in the British Army, this term is acceptable. Outside in civilian life, not at all. It’s not a term that I would use, but it is the actual nickname, Fighting Micks or the Micks of the Irish Guards.

      • Cerceau says:

Eh… the British Army does not get to decide what is and what isn’t offensive to Irish people. I find it offensive when “Micks” is used in normal life, and even moreso when the Irish Guards use it. I don’t care if it’s an official name or not.

      • Reese. says:

@cerceau I agree to that sentiment…My explanation was just in reference to the official name.

      • Alyse says:

Also Scots don’t call themselves Jocks, other people do.

    • minx says:

I don’t know what else she could be expected to wear. She doesn’t have a lot of flexibility in color or style for this event.

      • LizB says:

There is no rule for her to wear green. Everyone else not wearing a military uniform are dressed in a variety of colours.

      • minx says:

I know there’s no rule, but green is certainly a good color for the occasion, and its also a flattering color on her. And since March weather can be iffy, I would say Kate’s love of coat dresses is appropriate here. My response was to the OP who said Kate dresses the same every year.

      • Lady D says:

LOL. If there is one day of the year that has a colour attached to it, it’s St. Patrick’s Day. Of course she is going to wear green, she would look strange in anything else. I’m a little surprised anyone thinks she wouldn’t wear green, it’s what every member of the royal family does.

      • LizB says:

        @Lady D
The Queen Mother and P Anne wore all colours, they most certainly did not limit themselves to green for this event. Just give it a Google.

      • minx says:

Green is one of Kate’s best colors. Flattering color + traditional color = win. I can’t believe we’re debating why she chose this color on St. Patrick’s Day!

      • Becks1 says:

@Minx – agreed! She obviously can wear other colors (and has worn brown, which was not as fun IMO) but we all know Kate loves a bit of theme dressing, and again I’m not going to drag her for it for something like this. This is a day where the clover on her hat, green coat etc are all part of the theme but appropriate and she looks great.

Plus that shade of green is a good color on her.

      • Glor says:

I think it’s a compliment to Ireland that she wears green…….taken as such anyway, even though this IS the British Army. It’s a sense of fraternity in spite of history, so to speak. (I’m not drunk!)
The green madness here at home is quite out of hand today, in apparel. Bonkers! Nicely done, Duchess.
That Guinness glass looks weird on my phone…..a new half pint shape? Yumm.

      • LizB says:

        Omg, I am not debating.
You implied she had to wear green (“not a lot of flexibility in color”) and Lady D said outright all the royals wear green for this. Both of you are wrong, just pointing out facts.
I never said she shouldn’t wear green. Yes, it is the obvious “oh it is St. Patricks Day must wear green!” theme dressing. It is Kate’s choice, I was just clarifying that it is her *choice* to wear green (except the one time she wore brown) for this event that some people think is boring.

      • Lady D says:

Yes, you are right, LizB. I didn’t see pictures of the Queen on St Patrick’s Day, but there are several of Ann and she is in a variety of colours. I thought the green was mandatory and clearly I’m wrong.

  5. Lightpurple says:

    Long live Domhnall!

I’m keen on the coat. I’m even more keen on Domhnall

  6. Lilla says:

Kate looks well tailored, neat as a pin, and good for the occasion. Domhnall is gorgeous, a very good boy indeed!

    • minx says:

And I am not a hat person, I think most of the royal hats/fascinators can look really goofy. But this one is lovely…it fits her head well and the bows at the front are cute.

  7. Dueberrygal says:

In 8 years Kate has only skipped the St Patrick’s day event once & that was in 2016. She has attended in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017 & 2018, so I’m not going to criticize her for missing it once!

I also love this overall look! The coat is perfectly tailored & looks great on her.

    • Alexandria says:

That’s what I thought. She only skipped once.

She looks great here but yes I clicked because I always want to see that handsome fella!

      • Becks1 says:

She got a lot of criticism for missing it that time, it was in the midst of a lot of bad press about being “workshy” for both her and William if I am remembering my timeline correctly (I think it was just after the dad-dancing “incident”, but I could be wrong.)

In retrospect missing it once doesn’t seem like a big deal, and if she continues to go every year for the next 30 years, no one is going to remember that she missed it in 2016. But at the time “skipping it” was a really big deal.

      • ShazBot says:

It was because when she skipped it, KP came out and said it was because “she didn’t want to raise the expectation that she would attend it every single year”

THAT is what the criticism was for.

      • Beli says:

At the time she missed it, the word from their press office was that she missed it because she wanted to spend time with her kids and didn’t want there to be an expectation that she’d do it every year.

Now, at that point the tradition of a female royal handing out the shamrocks had been going over 100 years. It came across as incredibly disrespectful, especially since it’s not a taxing or long event. She shows up and hands out shamrocks, that’s it. An hour max.

There was quite a bit of bad press, especially as around the same time Will and Kate had their family ski holiday (loads of time with the kids) and Kate was posing for Vogue photoshoots (more time away from the kids than the St Patrick’s Day engagement).

Since then, they’ve backtracked and she’s shown up every year since.

      • Himmiefan says:

KP was pretty stupid for coming out and saying that.

      • Alexandria says:

I agree Himmiefan. If she wanted to skip because of the kids then just say it. Kids do get sick for example. I think they or she learnt a lesson from that.

      • MrsBump says:

Regarding that KP communication, does anyone have a link?
I’ve tried looking it up but every reference i’ve found says that she’s nor attending so she can spend more time with her kids and looks forward to attending many times in the future.
I can’t find anything related to the setting expectations bit.

      • Lady D says:

I read it here, MrsBump. It will be in the archives under a K&W story. Kaiser usually gives credit for stories she covers, so you should be able to find the original source.

  8. tmbg says:

I only opened this post because I knew it would have photos of that adorable dog! I wonder how old he is?

    • Incredulous says:

Still a pup, I’d guess otherwise he’s the smallest grown wolfhound I’ve ever seen.

    • Bethany Karger says:

I think he’s six, which is getting old for that breed.

    • Glor says:

Are you familiar with the cover/sleeve of (fab LP) Veedon Fleece, by Van Morrison?
      Now *thats* a Wolfhound! Yowza!

  9. Gail says:

What a handsome dog! And yes, I’m sure a very good boy!
Kate’s look is fine. What catches my eye here is PW in my favorite of all the men’s uniforms. I love that it was Harry’s choice to wear when he married Meghan!

    • BeanieBean says:

Interesting, that’s my least favorite of their uniforms–it seems funereal to me. I prefer their dress uniforms in with red jackets, such as the one Harry wore yesterday (day before?).

  10. Rosyquartz says:

The dog and Kate look great!

But I gotta gripe. On this site if I click on any of the thumbnail images on my iPhone to enlarge them they are always distorted. This has been happening for years and only happens on this site. It is so annoying and surely there is an easy fix. I can’t be the only one having this problem…

    • TheMummy says:

Yes!! Same. For years. Probably a decade at least. I don’t even click the thumbnails because I know they will be super distorted, so on this site I can only look at the photos in the actual post. I thought it was just me (for at least a decade now).

      • Redgrl says:

Yep! Try this – click once & it comes up distorted. Click twice on that image and it comes up properly. But even then sometimes the image comes up too big to see and you can’t shrink or move it.

      • jan90067 says:

Same thing happens for me on my MacBook. I don’t know how to adjust the photos, so I just don’t click on any of the other thumbnails anymore 😫

      • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Same. The thumbnails are distorted. Disappointing 😩 Also, I wish Celebitchy site opened a new browser window when we click on one of your links. Easy to get sucked into a bunch of links and Celebitchy site has been left in the dust 😕. Lainey’s site does this. You close all the extra links, and there’s your originating site waiting for you – voila!

      • Lady D says:

If you right-click the link with your mouse, you get the option to open the link on another page or in another window. Just close it when you’re done and you’re back on CB.
I had distorted pictures for the longest time, too. They came out really narrow and long, but the problem seems to have fixed itself lately for me. The RSS 2.0 feed is still gibbled however.

      • Olive says:

in defense of celebitchy, web standards now for designers actually don’t recommend opening links in new windows automatically. even on phones now you can easily just open links in a new tab yourselves. celebitchy is up to date on current web standards. lainey’s site has always been a little more outdated

    • Skyblue says:

I’ve had had the same problem with distorted images when I click on the thumbnail pictures.

      • Olive says:

same. there’s something in the display code for them that is displaying the images are skewed – the images themselves are fine, as you can see what you open just the image on its own. guessing maybe they are coded to always fit to a certain horizontal width.

    • LivePlantsCleanAir says:

I’m on my home computer, and I have to agree…distorted images, which do frustrate some, The ones where there is fashion…like the pic says Jane and then there’s also Susie and Sally included … ususally come through okay. The ones of the royals never do.

      • Patty says:

@AnotherDirtyMartini you can change that setting in your browser and on your phone. Go to settings and select the option to have links opened in a tab/window. 🙂

    • Celebitchy says:

I’ll see how I can fix this in the next few days. I’m sorry! I’m recovering from a minor medical procedure so it may take me until the end of the week. If anyone wants to help me test it just comment here with your correct contact email (in the email field I can see that but other people can’t). I have an android and an iPhone I can use to test it too. In December I tried to update the site’s backend but it failed and we were down for a whole day. I can do some minor design updates though of course without affecting anything.

  11. Becks1 says:

Oh I like this look. This may be my favorite look of hers from this event. Polished, appropriate, and while its not a total pencil skirt silhouette, its closer to that than some of the other coats she has worn to this event. Minimal buttons, lol. She looks great.

  12. Carolind says:

Dog is a real darling. Kate looks nice – probably the best she has ever looked at this event. Neat coat.

  13. vava says:

I like the coat, and this style certainly seems to be tending towards her new uniform of sorts. The hat matches in the exact hue, for a change! YAY. Two thumbs up for Kate this time.

  14. Jemimaleopard says:

Beautiful coat but honestly she must have about 10 other coats in this exact same shade of green – including a green D&G she wore when pregnant Tens of thousands on yet another green coat … feels wasteful. But it’s classic Kate!!

    • jan90067 says:

If she wore the same coat, or even rotated just one or two changes, she’d be accused of not caring enough to wear something new. I don’t think she can win.

I wouldn’t care much about this as she has repeated the other coats on other occasions. I’m sure she’ll do the same with this one.

      • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Agree – she can’t win. Neither can Meghan. It’s ridiculous & I truly hope they don’t read any comments. It would/could drive one bonkers.

      • Beli says:

I doubt it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any negative comments about Kate repeating an outfit in 8 years, only praise.

      • LizB says:

I have never read anything negative in all the times Kate has re-worn something. Seems like she is universally praised for it.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

I disagree, Kate has NEVER been criticised for repeating outfits – she is nothing but praised for it.

And I agree with the OP she has dozens of these style of coats in similar colours – if she has a proper dressmaker/tailer on staff then she can easily adapt existing coats. I know a seamstress and she said its very easy to change a style of a coat, dress etc.. if the person knows what they are doing.

      • Becks1 says:

Disagree. Kate is praised to the high heavens for repeating looks. I think this is one of her best looks for this event above so I’m not going to argue about the cost, but she def can repeat whenever she wants without criticism.

  15. Beli says:

The outfit looks good and thank goodness that the terrible excuse for not attending every year went out of the window after the bad press it got. Whatever the reason for the new level of activity (we can all speculate, but some people don’t like that), it’s a good thing if it means the job actually gets done.

As always though, Domhnall is the star.

  16. Miss M says:

She is flawless here. She looks so much more comfortable in the public after having Louis.

  17. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

She looks great, but I think I loved last year’s look even more – black accents at neck and sleeves. Domhnall! So cute! Next year, Kate & Meghan should both go together, just for fun on Meghan’s part since she’s such an animal lover too. (Don’t yell at me please! I like the sis-in-laws getting along openly & having fun, so all the media trying to start $h-t can shove it.)

This site had a fabulous pic of Kate throwing back her head and laughing. One of my all time favs.

    Kisses to Domhnall 🥰

  18. Enn says:

She looks great in jewel tones and I love the very tailored style.

  19. LizB says:

Meh. Not my favorite of her (many) green coats. Also over her go-to hairstyle. Hat is nice.

  20. Guest says:

Thats a new coat? I feel like you can copy and paste from last year and all the previous years.

Anyway did you hear William’s speech from the rugby game about the the terrorist attacks in new Zealand? Why KP posted that was beyond me. Hes so toned deaf. And I read on twitter that people from Wales booed him.

    • Royalwatcher says:

He is SO tone deaf. And, IMO, just shows how uncaring he really is because how could he have thought that was a good response? He really has no empathy. He’s an idiot.

I also saw that guy on twitter who said everyone in his Welsh pub booed the ENTIRE time William was on the screen. For some reason I found it hilarious, future Prince of Wales and all. But I’m evil.

      • Akua says:

Lol, nobody booed and yes I was there.

      • MrsBump says:

Is this some sort of parallel universe?
In your world is mentioning the victims of the terrorist attack tone-deaf” ?
There was also a minute of silence held, was that also tone deaf for you?
They were paying respects to the victims and recognizing the pain of ordinary new zealanders, one of the major rugby nations in the world.

Hate on William all you want but don’t minimize and deride the importance of recognizing that muslims too are victims of terrorism.

        – a muslim

There was more the one person on twitter that said he was booed. maybe not at the actual game like you were at

      • Tina says:

For me, when William said that he sent his thoughts and prayers “to our NZ rugby family today, especially in Christchurch,” that was tone-deaf. Although of course Sonny Bill Williams, who is Muslim, is one of the greatest rugby players ever. But the Venn diagram of Muslim New Zealanders and rugby-playing New Zealanders doesn’t overlap much.

  21. Mego says:

This ensemble is very appropriate, especially the shoes, for the occasion.

  22. knowitall says:

I’m really blown away by the quality of the fabric and the divine tailoring of this coat. You can tell that this is couture, whereas sometimes I can’t see the value in other bespoke pieces.

    • Digital Unicorn says:

Its McQueen so the tailoring will have been top notch – the brand is well known for the quality of its tailoring. Lee trained as a tailor on Saville Row and all of his work was noted for the tailoring.

      • BeanieBean says:

It’s interesting that you say that, because in the past, commenters have pointed out the poor tailoring in several of Kate’s McQueens. This one looks good; it has elements of other McQueens she’s worn, so it reminds me of one or two Simplicity patterns from which my mother made several different outfits for me in junior and mid high school. Variations on a theme.

    • minx says:

I love it too, just beautiful fabric and tailoring.

  23. Cerys says:

No criticism from me today. She looks great in this outfit. The coat, shoes, hat etc were all lovely.

  24. whateVer says:

This is a really, really nice coat. From the side angle, it actually looks like a two-piece suit. If the black version worn on Remembrance Sunday is exactly like this then great, more of the style of coat please and less of the blue one worn in NI.

  25. A Fan says:

Wow, she looks fabulous. A great outfit on her – top to bottom.

[*What could there be to criticize here?*]

  26. Rach says:

1)Kate didn’t attend the 1 time – that got a mention in this article.
2)Coat looked like the rememberance day coat
3)“I’m super-impressed that Kate got a new green coatdress – she tended to do recycled looks for St. Patrick’s Day, but this year she commissioned a new Alexander McQueen look with a vaguely military feel.” – is this a backhanded compliment or criticism?
    4)& the buttons get a mention too….
    5)Rinse & repeat……
Kate can do nothing right, this is getting old!

  27. Mar says:

Kate always picks appropriate colors on occasions.

  28. Jenx says:

I never thought I would say this but she does look good, very elegant, very appropriate. And she seems alert and engaged, less maniacal. Getting into the work routine, rather than sporadic appearances, seems to be doing wonders for her professionally.

  29. MoonTheLoon says:

Let’s talk about Domhnall for a sec. I love his red coat! I’m almost inspired to sew one for my own little Domhnall (he’s a terrier/german shepherd mix, we call him Dino). I have to admire Kate’s restraint, cuz I would shocked the protocol police by kneeling down and giving that dog a good cuddle. Cameras be damned! LOL

  30. Weaver says:

She could stand to bring some modernity into her wardrobe. I’m so tired of the prim coat dresses.

  31. Ahoyoy says:

    Chintsy-looking coat- check
Tailored to within an inch of its life- check
    Juvenile hat- check
    2 lbs of slap- check
Well, this all looks in order.

Lord, that coat really looks like it was made out of j.crew outlet material by an apprentice seamstress on her first day. I just can’t.

    • Flying fish says:

      Wow…

    • minx says:

It’s ”chintzy” and that coat is anything but chintzy. The fabric is beautiful and it is impeccably made.

      • Ahoyoy says:

Yeah, sorry, no. That fabric looks cheap, wrinkle prone, and thin. The buttons are poorly considered, the collar is too bulky, the shoulders are fitted wrong, and that faux peplum is unsightly. It’s fine if you like it, but the quality is clearly poor. What she has gotten right is the proportions and the color, so 10% right? An improvement for her.

And do feel free check my spelling, you did such a good job last time.

    • Eyeroll says:

Wow. Imagine being this vitriolic on the internet about someone you don’t know. Am sure that your style is absolutely vogue-worry, right?

      • Linda says:

Do you not you know Ahoyoy is the resident authority on all things style, fashion and good tailoring lol.

  32. Lubbylou says:

Oh dear I see the usual knee jerk hate brigade are out again

  33. anony7 says:

Love the outfit and especially the dog. And da-yumn, William looks so much better with a hat on.

    • Alittlesugar says:

Likewise he would look so much better if he still had hair. He can’t wear the hat all the time so that’s the disadvantage to his baldness. Not that being bald is bad, but William just suits having hair. Same for Harry actually, who’s hair is already receding.

    • Tina says:

You know what would make them both look better? More work.

      • Eyeroll says:

Do you comment on all of the articles about Harry saying the same thing? I haven’t seen those comments from you. His numbers were terribly low last year – ALL of the round royals need to buck up.

      • Eyeroll says:

Do you comment on all of the articles about Harry saying the same thing? I haven’t seen those comments from you. His numbers were terribly low last year – ALL of the young royals need to buck up.

      • Tina says:

Yes (I don’t comment on all the articles about Harry, nor do I comment on all the articles about William and Kate). By “both of them” I meant William and Harry. (Kate should work more too, but I’ve stopped criticising her as much, because she has three young children and there’s a lot of misogyny in the criticism directed at both Kate and Meghan).

  34. Liz says:

Stunning. She’s always such a breath of fresh air.

  35. ML says:

While I think she looks great, something’s really rubbing me the wrong way. I guess it’s okay she only skipped “one year” but when you hear the excuse (mentioned up-thread) it’s pretty weak. Also I blame myself for this, but I just asssumed this all happened in Belfast every year, so yeah maybe you can’t make it sometimes. Finding out it happens basically next to Heathrow airport changes things considerably. The idea of not creating expectations for an event that takes place in the Greater London area just shows how little they are willing to do.

    • Citresse says:

There were rumours at the time Kate skipped out the “one year”….because she had a hair appointment.
it wouldn’t surprise me given the fact William was also quite difficult at that time.
HM had to step in and she did.
Now we have MM on the scene; likely the best Cambridge motivator of all.

  36. manda says:

I am really beginning to hate coat dresses

  37. Casey20 says:

Poor Kate…this is her future for the rest of her life…same events, same clothes nothings new. Just smile for the camera’s and the Brits will gladly handover millions of pounds….just keep the American with substance away

  38. LucyLee says:

I’m just waiting for her to open an umbrella and fly away like Mary Poppins.

  39. MeghanNotMarkle says:

Kate looked fine. Another boring new coat dress. Domnhall was adorable, as always.

  40. Nikki says:

I love the length of the coatdress.
