Celine Dion is going on tour: I’m 51 years old and I’m at my best

Celine Dion is having yet another resurgence in her career. She’s about to finish her 15-year (!) residency at Caesars in Las Vegas. But since this is Celine, she’s not going to chill out on a yacht in the South of France afterwards. Or maybe she is, with her friend Pepe. I don’t know, but she’s not going to do it for very long, at least. She wraps up the residency in June and in September, she embarks on a world tour, beginning in her native Quebec. Plus, she was just announced as a global ambassador for L’Oreal Paris and is raising three boys by herself. If it sounds overwhelming to you, fret not. Celine said she’s at the top of her game.

Céline Dion is wrapping up her longtime residency in Las Vegas, but the pop icon says she’s heading into a “big” new chapter with a world tour starting in September.

The Power of Love singer announced Wednesday during a live streamed performance at the Ace Hotel in L.A. that she’ll also be releasing a new album — likely in November — and counts Chandelier singer-songwriter Sia among the collaborators.

“I feel I’m in charge of my life,” Dion told CBC News during a sit-down interview Wednesday in Los Angeles. “I’m 51 years old and I’m at the best of my gig.”

Known for hits such as My Heart Will Go On and Because You Loved Me, Dion says the name of her upcoming tour — Courage — reflects the ups and downs she’s faced since the death of her husband and manager, René Angélil, three years ago.

“When I went back to singing it was hard, but I went,” she said. “The children were magnificent. And I needed them as much as they needed me. And I see my husband through the eyes of my children every day.”

Celine has always struck me as a person with boundless energy (which complements her boundless enthusiasm beautifully). So, I’m not surprised to hear she’s setting out on a world tour so soon after she finishes with Vegas. More so, I’m excited for her because I feel like she’s doing this tour for herself. She inferred after René died that he had done everything he could to set her up to provide stability after he was gone. He was both 26 years older than her and battling cancer so his passing was a likely eventuality for them. And although I’m sure she enjoyed working and appreciated the routine as she was processing her grief, I feel like the residency was not something she sought out to do but did because it provided an anchor. This tour seems like her baby. She’s doing it because she wants to, with music that she produced from this new place in her life. I think she’s flourishing at 51, as she said, and she wants to show the world. I love it.

I hadn’t known they had children. That’s lovely for her. She’s stupendous isn’t she? I’d avoid her music myself. but can’t help be thrilled by her exuberance and determination to live every moment magnificently and joyfully. .
