‘The Walking Dead’ is getting a spinoff starring two women in a coming of age story

There’s another Walking Dead spinoff coming which is co-created by former TWD showrunninger Scott M. Gimple, the guy who decided to kill popular characters Carl and to a lesser extent, Glenn. (Glenn also died in the comics so his death was arguably necessary.) Gimple is no longer the showrunner for the main show, he was replaced last year, but he got promoted to head of the entire franchise. This was baffling considering how he pissed off fans. The spinoff is co-created and will be run by another Walking Dead writer and producer, Matt Negrete. It’s starring two women, which is great and hopefully they’ll have women writing for the show too and will value their input. The news comes just as the Walking Dead wrapped its ninth season. The existing spinoff, Fear the Walking Dead, has its fifth season coming out in June. This new series will be set early in the zombie apocalypse with a premiere date of next year. Here’s more:

On Monday AMC announced a forthcoming new series in the zombie-infested universe, set to debut in 2020.

The still untitled series will begin production on a ten-episode season this summer in Virginia, the network said.

“We’re thrilled that the Dead will keep walking into a new corner of the post-apocalyptic world, a corner that will present stories and characters unlike any that The Walking Dead has dramatized thus far, and that is bound to excite one of the most passionate fanbases in television,” said David Madden, president of programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios.

“The Walking Dead” also spurred a spin-off called “Fear the Walking Dead,” which begins airing its fifth season on June 2.
Late last year, AMC also announced a series of films that will star Andrew Lincoln, who left the flagship show in November.

Though both the original and the spin-off series have dwindled in ratings since their peaks, the addition of a new shows to the franchise indicates AMC still sees more life zombies.

This new story, from Scott M. Gimple and Matt Negrete, who will serve as showrunner, will feature two young female protagonists and “focus on the first generation to come-of-age in the apocalypse as we know it,” according to a release.
“Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever,” the network teased.

It’s great that they’re having two women characters helm a show and I hope the writers and new showrunner handle it well. It does seem questionable but typical that Gimple is involved and that two men are co-creating it. I’m sure it will be decent enough that people will watch it. I watched the first two seasons of Fear The Walking Dead and liked it, particularly because Kim Dickens is awesome and I still love zombie shows. I found that there was better post apocalyptic content on Netflix so I stopped when it got too complicated. Ditto for The Walking Dead, although I lasted about seven seasons. Less people are watching TWD now but these shows are still lucrative and they’re still very popular. I’ve heard that the latest season of The Walking Dead was better too. That’s surely because Gimple left.

I watched season 9 of TWD, and the last one I watched before that was 2. It’s not something you need to follow every week and is still fun. I’m really into the next one though; Alpha is cray cray and I wanna know how that’s gonna go down.

I watched the first five-ish seasons, then dropped out for awhile and came back in towards the end of 8 (I basically skipped the Negan stuff, because he was annoying). Season 9 was good. It really feels like a whole new show since Angela Kang took over.

I quit Fear the Walking Dead an episode or two before Dicken’s character died. I was so pissed because….hello? She WAS the spin-off.

What’s the better post apocalyptic stuff on Netflix? Recommendations please!

I couldn’t get into Fear past maybe 3 episodes. The lead woman and her son dressed in old man clothes were so annoying. I dont know her as an actress but she was terrible in this role…..or maybe it was just bad writing but i found it unwatchable. Which sucks cause i really tried to like it

I was a huge fan of TWD. Like, HUGE. But the Negan storyline was dragged and his character was more eye-rolly annoying than he was juicy villain. The character just did not transfer well from comic to live action. Then, all of the vets on the show started being written like clumsy noobs. I stopped watching two seasons ago. Now that I know Rick, Maggie and soon Michonne are gone, I really don’t care.
Couldn’t get into Fear. Madison and her colonizer ways was also someone I didn’t like or want to root for. Everyone I did like was killed off.
The spinoffs might work if TWD ended and went away. I feel fatigue. They need to learn from GoT. Go out on a high note, leave the folks wanting more, and provide with a spinoff. But they want to milk this to the bitter end.

TWD peaked in the season where they were all trying to get to Terminus. It explored huge concepts and situations that could arise in a post apocalyptic world and how they change the fundamentals of human society and nature. It was so strongly written in that way and the characters were so well developed that it didn’t matter if the premise was cheesey or the acting was poor. Even the camera work was good, it immersed me in the show and I never got bored.

There just hasn’t been any substance since Carl was shot in the eye. The acting got terrible, the characters were choppily developed (HELLO wtf did you do with Jesus?! And Negan for that matter.) There’s little wonder why all the original cast is bailing, the actor who played Jesus ASKED to be written off because he felt his character had been let down and was ready to just let it go.

This season could have been good but so much was left unexplained and out of sorts. As if people like Tara would just randomly follow Alpha and end up getting her head chopped off. Or Enid. Just stupid. And Gabriel with Rosita??? As if.

I like Darryl but he’s talking way too much. He’s out of character for no reason. Asking Carol what she sees when she looks at him? Darryl doesn’t talk like that.

Dont get me started on Fear The Walking Dead. Even worse.

Blah, it just needs to go away.

It’s nice it’ll be two women in the new stories, but Gimple is awful. TWD has gotten better now that he is gone, still not as good as it was, but definitely better with Angela Kang at the helm. FTWD had gotten really interesting after the kinda rough 1st season. Now that Gimple’s in charge of that, it’s gotten really bad. I really don’t know why AMC keeps him around with the feedback they get from fans — there’s surely other capable show runners out there. His storytelling techniques are not good, even though you can tell everyone around him tells him it’s high-brow and artsy.

They need to STOPPPPPPPPP. TWD hasn’t been even been good enough for a hate watch for at least three seasons. FTWD was garbage from the start.
