I’ve been saying for months now that the 2020 awards season/Oscar season would feel very funky because of the compressed timeline, and I think we’re seeing that play out now. While there were no HUGE shocks in the Golden Globe film nominations yesterday, there were some notable snubs. Let’s get to it!
Little Women. I wondered if LW is suffering from a late release date, and not enough critics and Academy members have had a chance to screen the film. Saoirse Ronan got nominated for Best Actress (Drama), but there were no Globe nominations for any of the other actors, nor for the film or for Greta Gerwig, who directed it and adapted the screenplay. I don’t know… it feels like perhaps some of my qualms about the look and vibe of the film are being justified though?
No Robert DeNiro. The Irishman has been getting love from all of the critics’ awards and it got a lot of Globe nominations too… but nothing for Bob DeNiro. Is that weird or was the Best Actor field super-strong this year? I mean… Jonathan Pryce and Christian Bale were included, so maybe not? I expect DeNiro to get an Oscar nom though.
Lupita Nyong’o & Us. Jordan Peele’s Get Out was such a success at every level, it makes sense that there would be some kind of “sophomore slump” with Us. I mean, the film made money and Lupita has been included on a lot of acting shortlists, but… nothing for Us at the Globes. No nomination for Lupita or the film. One could argue that the big awards shows don’t know what to do with horror. But… those awards loved Get Out. Maybe it’s just that Us wasn’t the cultural phenomenon that Get Out was.
No female directors. I mean, Greta Gerwig could have been on the list. So could Lorene Scafaria, who did a bang-up job on Hustlers with not that much money. Melina Matsoukas from Queen & Slim and Lulu Wang for The Farewell were also not “good enough.” Queen & Slim was snubbed entirely. Oh, but Noah Baumbach didn’t get a directing nomination either. Hm.
No Hustlers respect. I mean, Jennifer Lopez got nominated in supporting – which was the plan all along – but the film didn’t get nominated in any other category. I thought it was a strong film but I’m fine with them just putting money into J.Lo’s campaign alone.
No CATS. I mean… I think this snub is hilarious!! CATS looks like a f–king nightmare.
There were other “snubs” like… Ford v. Ferrari, but I guess I don’t think of that as an actual snub, because I never thought that film was a major contender anyway. I’d also like to highlight that there were some great nominations too, like Awkwafina in The Farewell, Daniel Craig for his bonkers accent work in Knives Out, love for Korean master Bong Joon Ho, and more. But yeah, as I’m looking through the Best Picture lists for Comedy and Drama… so many male-dominated stories. Ugh.

DeNiro didn’t deserve a nod. Joe Pesci stoke that movie from both him and Pacino. Watching Pacino in The Irishman I saw glimmers of him in The Godfather and how great an actor he can be.
Absolutely. Even Al, whom I absolutely love, was slightly outshone by Joe. I think they all worked well together, but I would give the GG to Joe over the rest of them. And I’m a huge Al fan!
Every year I am surprised that the Globes get so much attention – which they get only because they are the first event of the season. I can’t work myself up too much over what has been snubbed – there only around 100 people voting for those awards, they can’t watch everything and they seem to have a very specific (read: white) taste. A lot of their votes seem to be buzz driven as well and there have been occasions where a nomination was given just to jizz up their red carpet.
Cats got a best original song nomination. Did anyone expect them to get any other nomination besides maybe best comedy/musical, which despite its awful cgi it might have gotten had the movie been released earlier and attracted enough of the pre Christmas audience.
I would like to second your first paragraph. That is not to say that over the years I haven’t had enourmous fun watching the Globes, going wayyyy back. Then in the early/mid 2000s I knew, through my job, a journalist who was a member of the HFPA. He sadly died several years ago, he was one of the nicest people I have ever known, and when in LA I stayed with him in West Hollywood and we became friends (and he took me as his guest to the Globes once, which was cool). He was always working is ass off, jetting around the US and the world for press junkets and whatnot, writing for various media outlets in several countries, all at the age of 70+.
But the fact that slightly more than 100 people only decide about those awards… I don’t know… I used to think it was way more before I got a closer look. My friend told me various stories and he said, and I believed him, that there are journalists in the HFPA who take their job and the role in this association seriously, while others write a couple of pieces a year – back then once you were a member you only had to write two or three articles for foreign press publications annually in order to stay a member – and otherwise mainly attend events and junkets and enjoy the travel and food and privileges, not bothering putting much real work into it.
So ever since, I still managed to enjoy the awards for the most part (although not that much in the past few years, because it all has become a bit predictable and stale), but you should always keep in mind the way these noms and awards come together. If I put my friends and my family in one room and we decide about nominating films and actors for an award, we’d be already halfway were the Globes are. Minus the marketing lol!
If Noah Baumbach is going to keep fictionalizing his life, he really needs to hire Alan Cumming to play his stand-in character.

Honestly both Baumbach & Gerwig disgust me. You have to be bordering on sociopathic selfishness to run off together while (Baumbach’s wife) JJL was IN labor. to add insult to injury, JJL wrote the film that Gerwig got her breakout role from/Baumbach directed – & their affair happened all throughout filming during JJL’s pregnancy.
….I mean Baumbach is a known self-important dbag, but Greta sadly showed her true colors. How can you even as a woman…do that? That’s so f’d up.
I can’t and don’t want to support these two human beings, or anybody who does what they did.
I read an interview with Baumbach recently – NY Times, maybe? – and he came across as so narcissistic that it really colored my viewing of A Marriage Story. I hated Adam Driver’s character.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I really wish that Emilia Clark has been recognized for the amazing work she’s done over the years on Game of Thrones. The writers destroyed the show, but (imo) Emilia was wonderful.
No women of color except for Scarlet Johannsen. Sigh!

Fiord v Ferrari will get more attention at the Oscars because of the technical categories like sound editing. It is a really well crafted film. Probably the same with 1917. And Knives Out had better receive a costume nomination.

Us was such a memorable film, but also I still get disturbed when something reminds me of it. So do they usually ignore horror? It did seem to be more of a horror film than get out

I don’t think it was quite as compelling as Get Out, but Lupita should have been recognized, her work in it was phenomenal.
I loved Us. One of my favorite movies this year! Horror is often overlooked though, unfortunately, no matter how good the movie is. I believe Lupita was recognized by Critics Choice, though!
Of course Us did not get noms, the entire lead cast was black.

No. They made a special screening for GG voters. Few days ago Variety had an article that they made it in time for GG and voters really liked it. I knew the part about ” liked it” was a pure fiction. Tay Tay must told it Variety 🙂 this movie will be a disaster and I’m here for it.
That has never stopped the Golden Globes. Had anyone “big” in the film had any considerable buzz ( i.e “Taylor steals the show”) they would have thrown her in.
Then surely the song wouldnt have been nominated then.
Lorene Scafaria should have been nominated. I’m ecstatic they are recognizing JLO, she won the LA critics association Best Actress and the New York Times highlighted her as one of the 10 best performances of the year! I think it should pick up more technical nods like cinematography at the Oscars since the GG don’t do them.
To me, the biggest snub is that When They See Us received ZERO noms! How does this series not get nominated? It was beautiful and brilliant. Ava DuVernay did an incredible show on that show.
Also, Marielle Heller should have been nominated for It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. She directed that movie to perfections.

I read that that broadcast TV was COMPLETELY shut out-that seems like a huge shock to me.
Not really though…its been heading that way for years. Like I think for awhile the only major network show that had been nomintaed for things was “This is us”.

Remember this is the Globes. The same Globes that nominated The Tourist. Them not nominating it for director or picture doesnt necessarily mean anything. Also the Critics Choice Awards gave it like 9 nominations so *shrugs*.

Did you guys know Ryan Murphy is VERY close friends with Bryan Singer, even now? F that guy for pretending to be a champion for LGBTQ+ on screen but is besties on the low with a serial predator of young gay men. Oh, and the guy that won Best Editing at the Oscars last year? He’s worked with Bryan Singer since 1990. He’s seen every crime, every cover up, he knows where the bodies are buried – figuratively and…probably literally.
Biggest snub was definitely Jeremy Strong in Succession.

What does that even supposed to mean? Bale is the best part of that movie and he is incredible in it. Loved the movie from start to end and he just gave a great performance. No need to shade him.
