Katy Perry says her pregnancy wasn’t ‘an accident’: ‘It’s just time for me’

Katy Perry shows off her baby bump at the ICC Women's T20 Cricket World Cup Final in Melbourne!

In our Gossip with Celebitchy podcast this week, we talked briefly about Katy Perry’s pregnancy, and I told CB that it wasn’t a surprise to me, and that it was pretty obvious that Katy was doing “the work” on herself to get ready for the next phase of her life. Her interviews have been reading like self-help books for a couple of years, and she’s clearly been trying all different kinds of therapy and meditation. I feel like motherhood was the end goal: she wanted to be mentally and emotionally ready for it. Which is basically what Katy is saying in a new interview too. I love it when I’m right! She also says that the pregnancy wasn’t “an accident.”

Katy Perry allowed herself time and space to prep for parenthood. On Monday, the “Part of Me” singer, 35, spoke with Australian radio show Fifi, Fev & Byron, explaining why now is the “right time” to start a family. Perry — who announced last Thursday that she’s expecting her first child with fiancé Orlando Bloom — said it took her some time to feel fully ready for motherhood.

“I was that girl, or am still that girl, that had that box, the baby clothes before there was the thought or even an Orlando Bloom,” she told the radio show, according to Entertainment Tonight. “I’m excited about that and, like I said, I have two nieces and one nephew that I’m obsessed with.” She added: “I think, definitely, everything’s changing. I wasn’t ready a couple years ago, and I did the work to get ready and now I’m really ready. … It’s just time for me, and it’s the right time.”

Though her pregnancy revelation may have come as a shock to fans, the big news wasn’t as surprising for Perry, who told SiriusXM’s Mikey Piff that it “wasn’t an accident.”

“I’ve just been trying to create this space in my own life where I’m not running myself too ragged and creating space for something new to pop in like this,” she said.

What was perhaps more unexpected for the artist was the postponement of her wedding ceremony to Bloom, which was set for early summer in Japan. The couple, who got engaged on Valentine’s Day 2019, delayed their “smaller and intimate” nuptials amid novel coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns, a source recently told PEOPLE. “Katy was actually really excited about walking down the aisle pregnant,” the source said. “They were both so elated that all the wedding details were finally coming together, but they are hitting pause because of coronavirus.”

I… don’t think her pregnancy was an “accident” in the sense of “whoopsie, how did that happen?” I think she did all of the “work” (as she says) and then she and Orlando talked about having kids and when that would happen and she likely went off her birth control, etc. So, loosey-goosey, but no accident. And maybe she did want to be a pregnant bride too. But as I also said in the podcast, I kind of hope that Katy and Orlando put their wedding off indefinitely, just have the baby and live together for a while and see if that works out.

Or, you could have a smaller, more intimate ceremony closer to home? Just a thought.

Her baby light went on. Happens to plenty of us.

I had my kids at 35 and 37. My recovery with my second child has been very tough, and my delivery was very scary for us both. I know people who have had kids at 40+ but I’m done. I wish her the best!

39 and 43 for me. I’m exhausted! I’m happy for her and appreciate that she worked on herself before getting pregnant.

41 and 43 here. 2 girls. They are 1 and almost 3. I’m tired and happy! Husband is done, I’m tempted for one more but realistically, not gonna happen, and I don’t know if my body or our bank account would ever recover from a third! Its not so much the pregnancy (though it is the pregnancy!). It is the lack of time for self care afterwards.

33 here and feeling the pressure. I keep putting it off….one more year….one more year. Ugh, I’m kind of running out “one more years.” But my backup is adoption. I actually like the idea of that more than having biological children. Time will tell.

As for Katy, I like her. A lot. But I don’t know if I like her with Orlando? Do we like them together?

    • Ellie says:

I like them together!! I think someone as famous as Katy could struggle finding an equally famous man who’d actually not be threatened by her star power (obvi Brand couldn’t handle it). As evolved as we are now, SO many men are fearful of the woman being the powerful or high-earning one. Orlando doesn’t seem to have this issue and worships and adores her. A lovely pairing.

CB Mom’s, help a soon to be pregnant woman here (IVF – implantation happening next month). Is it safe to dye your hair when you’re pregnant? I tend to get light highlights which I’m told is safe because “it doesn’t touch the scalp”, but KP is flat out bleaching hers. Soooo is that safe?

    • Gippy says:

@suz — IVF twin mom here (16w boys!) good luck!! I Did a glaze but no dye while going through treatments and pregnancy (there’s natural glazes that are gentle). However, if you do go for it, do it in a well ventilated salon. I figured I went through hell to get there might as well do everything I can, in my head or not, to help my outcome.
