Emma Roberts, 29, is expecting her first child with boyfriend Garrett Hedlund, 35

Emma Roberts and Garrett Hedlund hold hands as they head to the movies

Emma Roberts and Garrett Hedlund started up – as far as we know – around March/April 2019. I honestly forgot about them, and I guess I kind of figured that it was just a hook-up thing and that they would burn out. Emma’s last big relationship was her on-and-off thing with Evan Peters, which once saw her arrested for domestic violence in Canada (but he declined to press charges). Garrett’s last big relationship was his years-long live-in relationship with Kirstin Dunst, who seemed to drop a lot of hints in interviews that she wanted to get married and have babies. Then Kiki and Garrett were over and a second later, she was with Jesse Plemons and knocked up. I always thought that Garrett probably wasn’t ready to settle down, and maybe he had some qualms about fatherhood. But he and Emma really did get serious with each other and their fling turned into a relationship. And now she’s pregnant.

Emma Roberts and Garrett Hedlund are starting a new chapter! The actress is pregnant with their first child, Us Weekly exclusively revealed on our “Hot Hollywood” news podcast.

The couple were first linked in March 2019 when they were spotted holding hands in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles. “Garrett and Emma have been friends, but this is new, casual, and just a couple of weeks old,” a source told Us exclusively at the time. The insider added that the American Horror Story alum, 29, and the actor, 35, are “having fun and enjoying each other.”

[From Us Weekly]

Emma has been out and about in LA a few times during the pandemic, and she’s always taking precautions with her hardcore face mask and getting her weekly supplies and such. I’ve never seen Garrett on those shopping trips! I wonder if they’re living together. I wonder if they’re quarantining together. I wonder how far along she is. I have to admit something though – if I was a professional actress, model or athlete, I would want to be pregnant right now. It’s like those public figures have been given a year off where there’s no work to be done, no competitions to be had, no diets to maintain and their full-time job can be “sitting at home and being low-key.” Except for all of the death and viral illness, it’s a perfect time to be pregnant.

Ugh. Well, good luck to that child, they’re going to need it with that abusive mess as a mother.

    • Katie_44 says:

I feel bad admitting it but I feel the same way. There’s something about Emma that always put me off of her. Maybe it’s the way she treated Evan?

    • Digital Unicorn says:

Indeed – the whole Roberts family is messy with anger issues. If I remember back in the day, there were stories about both Eric and Julia and their bad behaviour toward partners.

      • BayTampaBay says:

I have absolutely no idea who he is. I have never heard of him. I am really getting old!

    • bub244 says:

I hate to say it, but my first thought was ‘oh no’. I hope Emma takes this time to work through her issues and ensure she can provide a positive and stable home environment for the baby. But I fear she won’t.

    • Macm says:

In my personal experience, the fact that a woman has to BITE someone is a HUGE red flag. If you are in combat, you kick, you punch, you throw shit. Trust, I know. But if you are in a position where you have to bite, it means there is no other option (for example, strangulation). Also, Celebitchy should know, police are called for DV situations most likely by the abuser.

      • Original Jenns says:

Your first point is a really valid one. However, working in criminal law, I have not found your second statement at all to be the case. It has happened, but not “most likely”.

I do think she has her issues and I hope she’s been able to work them out. Staying quiet and low-key, maybe she’s been doing some work on herself, which puts her light years ahead of her dad!

      • Macm says:

You don’t work in the police department, so you have no way to actually know the numbers. Abusers weaponize the police against victims as a form of abuse. They don’t press charges, because why would they? It is a threat. It is to keep victims under their control. I appreciate your law degree but look for the logic. Be an advocate.

      • bub244 says:

This is an interesting point you raise. However we also can’t forget that men can be victims of domestic violence too. And sometimes people choose not to press charges because they fear retribution or because they want to give their abuser another chance – it doesn’t mean that they are in fact the perpetrator.

    • CherryL says:

I think she’s just immature and hot headed. We don’t know that she really is abusive. Probably not the right age for her to be pregannt with someone she’s only known for a year.

  2. Ange says:

I hope she’s got that temper in check 😬

  3. Zapp Brannigan says:

Well congrats to Evan on dodging this bullet. I hope Emma has gotten help for whatever is going on with her.

    • Meg says:

LMAO a toxic college roommate dumped her long term boyfriend then quickly got pregnant by the guy she cheated on him with and we all told him the same: be grateful you dodged that bullet

  4. lana86 says:

“isn’t ready to settle down” = “is not that into you”. Once one meets someone really damn attractive, she/he is suddenly very ready.

    • Powermoonchrystal says:

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Kiki seems to me much better looking and talented than Emma, so this guy traded down, but you can’t control love. Wishing them good luck for the sake of the child.

    • Tiffany :) says:

Kirsten and Garrett broke up like 5 years ago. It’s very possible a person isn’t ready at 30, but is at 35. Or maybe there were situations in their life at that time that weren’t ideal to start a family then (career, health, etc.).

Acting like this is some kind of failure on Kirsten’s part is a really odd (and slightly sexist) take.

    • K says:

You can be extremely attracted to a partner and yet not want to have babies with them (or with anyone… because some of us don’t want children, period.) And then some people change their minds as they age or wind up in a situation they didn’t plan for, but they have to roll with.

    • Pryor says:

Sadly some people think the toxic behaviour exhibited by people like Roberts gives her character or some such shit.

  5. Piratewench says:

As someone with an abusive mother, I truly truly hope she gets a lot of therapy, assistance and guidance. It’s been clear for years she’s an abusive person. Hard to feel good about someone like that having a child. It just makes me nervous.

    • nic says:

      You’re so right.

I had postpartum with my youngest. I am VERY lucky to live in Canada where I received over a year of free help from specialists at my city’s women’s hospital. For me, my feelings towards my baby were never negative but I started to get really angry with my eldest, who is a lot like me. Just through talking once a week with an expert, I found my way through and my son has not had to deal with the nastiness and totally undeserved anger. I love him so much.

Mother’s mental health is family mental health. And someone who is very capable of beating another adult should not be left unchecked with a child. Hopefully she does get help and the help she gets is very effective. Not everything is fixable. :(

      • Piratewench says:

Thanks for sharing that story. I’m so glad you got the help you needed. I had post partum anxiety after my first and I know how it can overtake you. I’m also extremely thankful for the help I got.

You’re so right about mother’s mental health. As a mother of two now, I take my mental health very seriously. I know the signs that my anxiety is ramping up and I take it as something very serious, never something to ignore. I’m also glad I didn’t become a mother in my early 20s, I wasn’t at all ready to understand and face my anxiety problems, like I am now that I’m in my 30s.

  6. Case says:

I got bad vibes when I heard this, but best of luck to them. Hopefully she has matured and gotten help for her issues. I always think of her as being quite young but she’s not.

  7. Shutterbug says:

I didn’t know these two were still a thing!

Kiki talked about marriage and babies A LOT when she was with Garrett Hedlund but I guess he wasn’t into it at the time. I also seem to remember some talk involving his ‘lifestyle choices’ as a reason for their split? Details are hazy. Kiki and Jesse Plemons seem very happy together. As for Garrett and Emma…who knows? I always thought she and Evan would end up back together again at some point – they were so on/off for years!

  8. Nancy says:

A friend of a friend directed her in a film. She’s…not a great person.

    • Tiffany :) says:

Yeah. … there’s a number of reasons this is concerning.

    • bluerun1 says:

She just seems terribly messy. Wasn’t she also, supposedly, involved in breaking up Rachel Bilson and her longterm dude (Hayden C, the guy form Star Wars)? I always kinda thought that was sad and… weird. How does she land these guys?

    • paranormalgirl says:

Yeah, I had a friend who worked on a film with her and said she was such a rude and condescending person with a temper that turned on and off on a dime. But that was many years ago. Hopefully she has matured a bit over time.

    • holly hobby says:

Yes those stories came out around the time Leah Michelle imploded. People were accusing Ryan Murphy of turning a blind eye to Emma and Leah’s shenanigans. That says a lot about Murphy since he seems to like to prop up assholes.

  9. Myriam says:

When I think of Emma Roberts, I think of Lea Michele. They’re bffs and Emma is rumored to be just as messy as Lea is on set, and I believe it. Birds of a feather… Anyways, for her baby’s sake, and for Garret’s, I hope she gets her issues together. If she has little patience for an adult that she would get arrested for domestic violence, then a baby is a whole new playing field.

I had my baby in March just as the economy went into quarantine, and I truly hate to say it, but it helped me out a lot. I ended my maternity leave after 7 weeks since we were remote working anyways, and I am still remote working. I can use the remaining 5 weeks anytime up to a year, then I lose it. My job also added a Families Leave paid time of 2 weeks for corona-related issues, including not having care for your family. They are projecting for employees to come back in full time around August 17, but that could change. I am in Florida and it’s been predicted that we will become an epicenter for the virus like NY. But even if we go back to the office, I have another 7 weeks of leave I will use, so my son would be more than 6 months old by the time I have to come back in. The pandemic has given me more time with my son that I normally would not have had. On the flip side, my son still has not met his grandfather and multiple aunts, uncles, and cousins. The deaths and viral illnesses that I read about has made me extremely anxious. On the rare occasion that I go out to go grocery shopping, my husband usually does that, I feel so anxious, nervous, panicky. It’s bad. I don’t know if I can prepare myself to go back to work.

  10. FHMom says:

She looks so much like Julia in the header pic. I had no idea these two were together. I think it’s an awful time to be pregnant. I had to take my kids for physicals this week and was on edge the whole time I was in the doctors office.

  11. Ferdinand says:

I love the guy to death. I’ve seen everything he’s been in and I find it very attractive.

So good for her for getting it, I guess? But she is really a mess. So let’s hope for the best baby wise.

  12. Leah says:

Hope she keeps that anger issue in check because kids will be kids and there is a huge difference between discipline and abuse.

  13. Rapunzel says:

All I can think when I see this headline is, “Julia Roberts is gonna be a great aunt.” And then I feel old. Really old.

  14. Michelle says:

She seemed like a train wreck a few years ago. Hopefully she has gotten some help and things under control and is happy.

  15. DiegoInSF says:

She excels at playing the bitchy type (AHS, Scream Queens) and she’s really fun to watch but I don’t think she’s acting.

  16. Rachel says:

I hope her baby doesn’t inherit her sour pous mug.

  17. reef says:

I always forget she is a grown woman. Maybe because she mostly plays teens. Congrats to her.

  18. Beach Dreams says:

    Yikes.

  19. Lily says:

All I can think is of Jason Bateman in Arrested Development “Her?” Like.. procreating with Emma Roberts is a CHOICE. Yikes

    • amilou says:

This. I like Garrett Hedlund, and this makes me kind of sad for him.

      • Alyse says:

This. And also makes me question my liking of him lol…

I firkin love Kiki though, glad she’s happy with her family & career :)

  20. Anne Marie says:

I’ve never seen her act so I don’t know what’s the hype for her is for (guessing her aunt being Julia Roberts helps!) As for Gareth I really thought he’d end up back together with Kristin! Goodluck to them hope it works out for the baby’s sake

  21. Ashley says:

I’m going to be mean here but I feel like this is a lockdown baby. It seems like he wasn’t really into the relationship if I remember, and now she’s pregnant? Yeah… someone’s trying to keep a man.

I love Emma but I love her because I truly think she is Chanel in real life. Like she is that evil and narcissistic, which is probably why she plays those characters so well. I can’t imagine why she would want a child at 29, but I’m telling you this is a ‘give me a ring’ baby. I thought she was above that, but alas… if there was one person in the world who doesn’t give me nurturing mother vibes it’s her. but she did seem really in to him and I can totally see her “forgetting” birth control to keep him. I know that’s really malicious, but she’s got those vibes.

    • Meg says:

‘if there was one person in the world who doesn’t give me nurturing mother vibes it’s her’
      LMAO spot on-
but then i remember theres an innocent baby involved and thats sad

  22. Meg says:

Good luck Garrett, she seems like a real ray of sunshine
A friend mentioned years ago he thinks she looks dead behind the eyes- and i cant unsee it now

  23. Lady D says:

She needs anger management classes before that baby is born.

  24. lili says:

She got a great guy and she’s so unpleasant

  25. Elle says:

Without her personality in mind I do find her very attractive.

  26. khaveman says:

I mean it’s so well known how awful she treats people, so good luck with that man and that baby. If I were him I’d want a DNA test. I give it about 2 years.
