Prince George turns seven years old, and Duchess Kate posts a new photo of him

george sevenbday

I remember hearing a rumor a few days ago – a rumor that Prince George’s birthday was coming up soon. I did not believe the rumor, because I was sure that George’s birthday was a few months ago and we all saw new photos of him. No, I jest. Of course I remembered that George was born in July. He was born under the Cancer sign, just like his father and his grandmother Diana. I remember the Great Kate Wait outside of the hospital and all of the secrecy around the first delivery and that weird town crier dude and all of that. I remember the wait for the name too!

So, yes, today is Prince George’s seventh birthday. He was born just a few weeks after Andy Murray won Wimbledon the first time and Great Britain was feeling mighty patriotic. It felt like everyone was happy that Kate had a boy too, even though the royal succession rules were changed last minute in case Kate gave birth to a girl.

To celebrate George’s birthday, Kate photographed her son as he stood against… what looks like the back of a shed? Did she catch him doing something in the garden and she was like “sure, I’ll photograph him this way”? I’m pleased that after seven years and one pandemic, George no longer has to dress up like he’s Little Lord Fauntleroy. He gets to wear shorts and polo shirts and maybe even sneakers. It’s nice to see a smiling photo of him too – he looks genuinely happy, with a mischievous streak. His hair is turning quite sandy! In my opinion, he looks less and less like William as he gets older. I mean, you can still see *some* William in George, but he’s an interesting blend of both families.

Also: this photo was taken on the same day as William’s birthday photos. George is wearing the same polo. That must have been Photoshoot Day at Casa de Cambridge.

Last thing: for George’s sixth birthday, Kate photographed him in a green polo. Is that George’s thing? Wearing green polos in birthday photos?

    He is a cutie!

  2. Noki says:

He may escape the thinning hair curse, even at that age Wills hair was never that thick.

    • Deanne says:

Kate’s Father still has a lovely head of hair. Hopefully George and Louis will take after him.

      • Arb says:

I’m sad that anyone would care one way or another.

      • Jessa says:

Apparently (and I have no factual evidence to support this), hair loss is based on maternal grandfather – so that would make sense re Middleton genes.

      • Mel M says:

@jessa, I’ve heard that same thing and we talk about it often since the hubs has a receding hair line and his maternal grandfather had the horseshoe look. All of his brother have a receding hairline to some degree as well except for the youngest who was the hairiest of the bunch from birth, hairy back and all. My father still has a good head of hair so we shall see if my boys have the same.

      • holly hobby says:

Yes I’ve been told hair loss is based on the maternal side. If so, he won the genetic lottery. I recall Diana’s father was bald.

      • MissM says:

James Middleton has a receding hairline and if your father is balding, it’s likely that you will too. I seem to recall Diana’s father having a nice full head of hair but that didn’t help the Wales boys.

      • Ellie says:

        Yeah it’s complex.

My brother (and cousin, son dad’s brother) was thinning quite young while my dad’s hair was still going strong. Both grandfathers had hair until quite an old age.

    • Lightpurple says:

My brother had a very thick head of hair up through college. By 30, all of it was gone.

  3. anna says:

    he looks so happy

  4. Jennifer says:

Broken button on the Prince of Buttons? Quelle horreur.

  5. Tanguerita says:

He looks more and more like her brother, what’s his name. The picture in a khaki shirt is all right, but the other one…ugh. The poor light, the bluish-magenta tint, the lines growing from his shoulders and his head…Kate has been photographing for ages and still hasn’t learnt the basics of it.

    • Anners says:

That’s what I thought – especially in the camo shirt photo he looks an awful lot like James. I see a good mix of Windsor and Middleton genes. He’s a cute kid.

    • Tessa says:

Very mediocre photography. Though the Kate sugars will rave about it.

      • Nic919 says:

It’s so tiresome to read the faux praise about her photography skills. She’s mediocre at best. The kids are cute and that’s what they are praising. There is no skill in her photos.

    • Belli says:

Kate’s photos are nice. They’re usually sweet photos of her kids smiling. Most parents take nice photos of their kids.

But they are not good. Especially for a passionate amateur photographer who’s been practising for years.

      • Tessa says:

There are mothers who take better photos. But Kate is overpraised.

      • Nic919 says:

Doesn’t anyone find it odd that William doesn’t seem to take any photos of his kids? I know that both my parents knew how to operate a camera.

      • Ginger says:

I take some pretty great photos of my kids with my iPhone. I’m not a great photographer by any means. I hate how Kate is praised to the heavens for such basic stuff. There will be so many articles on her “amazing” photography

      • Becks1 says:

Exactly my issue. Her photos are nice. the kids are cute. I take similar ones all the time on my iPhone, and better ones with our good camera. But they’re nothing special. And that’s okay in itself – but the over the top praise for her pics and the constant descriptions of her as a photographer etc are just so annoying at this point.

      • Sofia says:

@Nic919: I’m guessing that’s because they’re trying to sell Kate as this amazing family photographer.

But as others here have said: she’s average and fine for a hobbyist. And that’s OK. Not everyone is a professional.

      • Dee says:

If she takes the photo, all the money paid for publishing goes to them. That’s why Kate’s photos are used.

      • Hope says:

@Dee If the newspapers are paying for those photos, there’s never a peep about donating any of that money. Kate and William pocket all of it.

      • Nic919 says:

William taking photos would let them pocket the money as well. It just seems odd that in all these years he hasn’t released any photos of his kids himself.

It’s also odd that Kate the expert photographer hasn’t released solo photos of William either. Usually if you like taking photos you take some of your spouse.

      • Lizzie says:

Just like a top CEO! Wait, do they take pictures? Well, she is just like a top CEO anyway.

      • so_annoyed says:

Ahhh!!! I am a professional photographer, and her images are cute but basic amateur images. They remind me of what I did YEARS ago when I was starting and thought they were fantastic. The constant praising either makes me think people just don’t recognize what great photography is anymore, which is scary, or they are just being kind and complementing on her adorable children. I would love to mentor her because I think she has the ability to get better and to be great. Who wouldn’t want to learn to take fantastic images of their own children, that is why I teach workshops on this! BUT, I highly doubt she would go for it. Plus, I shoot old school film, so that might not be her cup of tea.

      • Eugh says:

Agree, the subjects are really sweet, I like the Camo George photo. But she’s really bad at composing in my opinion, I don’t think she has the “eye” for it. Hard to mess up a bokeh background portrait.

      • Carolind says:

I don’t find it odd that William doesn’t take photos of his kids. No man that I know ever has unless forced into it by the child’s mother so photo will include her.

    • BeanieBean says:

I’m trying to figure out if the shed is crooked, if George is leaning, or if Kate held the camera at an angle, ’cause those shed lines aren’t vertical. And I love George’s killer cowlick. I think Kate has a similar one up front, but has apparently learned to tame it.

      • Argus says:

@NIC919 What’s so odd about it? Maybe his phone is full of his kids’ photos and he doesn’t release them to the press because it’s for his private enjoyment as a father or maybe he doesn’t fancy himself as a photographer like his wife does.

      • Nic919 says:

So what you’re saying is that Kate is okay with breaking her kid’s privacy but not William because she needs to maintain her image of photographer? I guess that’s as good of an answer as any.

      • Argus says:

@NIC919: I said no such thing. Some people are shy about posting on social media, doesn’t mean they don’t adore their kids or take pictures of them privately. But I guess you’d rather infer that he hates his kids and his wife hates him, therefore no photographs released to the press.

      • notasugarhere says:

Given how royal phones have been hacked in the past, Kate would be risking loads of the kids privacy if she was taking phone pics. What these pictures indicate to me is, this isn’t a family that lives together.

  6. My3cents says:

I was just thinking that he looks more and more like William.

    • MsDiMeanOur says:

If you Google William’s childhood pics.. George is identical to William
I don’t see anything Middleton on this one

Charlotte and Louise yes.. This one is a Windsor

Hopefully he won’t be bald like his dad

    • Tessa says:

I think he looks like Kate’s father. It’s better that he does not look like william IMO, William aged badly, like all Windsor males. IN William’s case…worse.

      • Zen says:

I’ve always thought George looks like Kate’s dad. I don’t see James M or William in him. William and Harry both had narrow faces and small eyes, even as kids, George does not. And hopefully George gets Mr Middleton’s hair which still seems thick. Do you think his teeth will keep that gap? Because damn, the royal family doesn’t seem to use orthodontia and those adult royals have some pretty gnarly teeth.

Also I think Kate photographs them because the kids are more comfortable and relaxed with their mom as opposed to a professional sitting. I think it’s as simple as that.

  7. SJR says:

He is cute, looks pretty happy and carefree, good for him.
Nothing makes you realize how quickly time goes by until you notice the age of the little kids, 7? Really, all ready?
The kids are all cute, nice pic of W & kids.
    Happy Birthday Royal Dude! :)

  8. SJR says:

Just looked at the Prince George + OBama + bathrobe picture = still the best photo ever. :)

    • Tanguerita says:

I love this picture so much) Obama is such a natural with kids, seeing him interacting with them almost hurts now. Paradise lost.

    • Insomniac says:

I love that picture so much!

    • Toniko says:

Because it’s Pete Souza. I like his story about that photo, how all he was thinking was that table leg is blocking the view, and he only had couple of seconds to make that picture.

    • Q says:

I didn’t like that pic at all.
Thought it was very rude and arrogant of will and kate to dress him up in a bathrobe to meet the president, as if they were above it. I doubt they would have done that with a white president.
That, plus the painting of the slave they had showed me a lot about who they truly are.

      • MsIam says:

@Q, the “white president” didn’t get to see George at all (at least there is no photographic evidence of it). So rather than an insult I think it shows they thought it was important for George to meet President Obama. They could have said “ Oh he’s not dressed or he’s about to go to bed” or whatever.

      • Tessa says:

George was so young and looked somewhat confused at this. HE was dressed up in a monogrammed robe which most kids don’t wear.I don’t think George was awakened from sleep he could have worn a regular outfit not sleep attire.

      • Mrs.Krabapple says:

At the time, I might have overlooked the bathrobe — but since then, Kate has made it public that she “speaks” and “works” through wardrobe and appearance. So that robe WAS a slight against the Obamas.

      • HeyJude says:

No, It wasn’t an rude and arrogant or an insult. As racist as the royals are, this wasn’t such a example.

First off Kate and William didn’t dress him like that, they were with the Obamas all day on their official state visit. Secondly, George meeting the Obama’s wasn’t planned at all.

George wasn’t supposed to be there for the official visit at all. He was off in their personal housing quarters. And Kate and William weren’t even with him before this as I said. They were with the Obamas at one of the visit’s official engagements (an informal dinner IIRC), and George was with his nanny. But as the visit with the Obamas broke off into a smaller groups where it was mostly just William/Kate and Barack/Michelle with a photog milling about as they toured the grounds, they decided in the moment quickly bring George over in person over to thank the Obamas for sending him a rocking horse when he was born. (George actually went over to it the room and got on it to show them how much he loved it and really used it.) They made a call to bring him over to say hi quickly, and it kept George up past his bedtime to do it, which is why the PJs and robe. And then afterwards he went back with his nanny who took him off to bed. This was completely impromto. The kid was literally just plucked from his bedtime routine to meet the Obamas. (He was even sleepily rubbing his eyes in some of the photos.) This spur of the moment, introduction to the child of the hosting Royal is extremely uncommon, not protocol and was only done because the Obamas were indeed such friendly, kind, and giving people they wanted George to meet them personally. Unlike most other world leaders who are usually so stoggy and formal you’d never bring a kid to meet them. This was really a special occasion to say thanks to 2 very special people.

And believe it or not, rich kids have monogrammed robes that are considered proper to wear when meeting someone in your pajamas. It’s a weird old fashioned etiquette thing. The regular public used to do it too up until about the 1960s-1970s, watch a classic movie sometime (or notice why even cheap hotels still for some reason provide robes, this is why). You always grabbed a robe for modesty when you not properly dressed and don’t have time to change. PJs wouldn’t be considered properly dressed. The robe dresses them and works in place of a formal coat would if properly dressed would. As in the ultra rich, formal people “dressed”. It’s a rich thing nowadays.

        Receipts on the visit- https://www.today.com/parents/prince-george-meets-president-obama-first-lady-his-robe-see-t88006

      • Becks1 says:

I thought the robe etc was cute, but your description of the day is wrong. The Obamas arrived at Kensington Palace and were greeted by Harry, Will and Kate. There was no “breaking off into smaller groups.” That was the group. The “informal dinner” was at Kensington Palace, at W&K’s “apartment,” after the Obamas had spent the day with the Queen (it was her 90th birthday). George was allowed to stay up to meet them, there are pictures of him waiting in the hallway as the Obamas arrived, he got on the rocking horse, and then the nanny took him away for bedtime.

The pictures are adorable and I don’t think the Obamas took any offense at the robe, they probably thought it was super cute, but it was definitely very planned. They didn’t “call George in” – he was waiting for them.

    • Rani says:

And here I was thinking that President Obama meeting Prince George was one of the wholesome and lovely images of recent history, but I was too naive not to realise the Cambridges were actually insulting the Obamas through their child’s wardrobe.

      • notasugarhere says:

Wholesome and lovely with the racist painting on the wall in W&K’s home, hand-picked by Kate?

      • Lucia says:

@notasugar, I believe President Obama and the child are being referred to as wholesome and lovely you ridiculous person. But of course you know that.

  9. Ginger says:

I honestly thought his birthday already happened. The Middleton genes are strong. He is looking more like James.

  10. Florence says:

Isn’t the background the same colour as the “neighbour’s” door?? You know, the one Charlotte delivered food to…

Keen isn’t smart enough to realise this is pretty damning if true – that they got Charlotte to pose outside a door on their property lmao.

Anyway – I hope George has a great day.

  11. Lala11_7 says:

I see his Aunt Beatrice in his face❣

  12. Lightpurple says:

Cute, happy- looking boy. It’s refreshing to see a child being allowed to look natural in a photograph, unlike the Trump grandchildren whose Princess-wannabe mom photoshops a full set of perfect teeth into the mouths of her kids.

  13. taylor says:

Cute kid. I remember him being the cutest little chubby baby. Time flies. These pic drops don’t hit like they used to though.

    • Becks1 says:

I think part of the reason for these pics not being as big a deal as they used to be – we have seen several pics of George over the past few months, whereas before we would go months (sometimes 6 months) without an updated pic. Also, the difference in kids as they get older isn’t as significant, IMO. the difference between a one year and a two year old is huge, a 6 year and 7 year old – not as big a difference, in my opinion. (obviously still different, the kid has still grown and changed, but on a different “scale.”)

  14. Becks1 says:

He’s getting so big! My son is a year older than him and for some reason I’ve always thought of George as “so much younger” than my oldest, which is silly because he just turned 8, lol.

on facebook, my memory from this day is “anxiously stalking the Lindo Wing via twitter and I’m not even embarrassed.” Hahahahahaha. I was such a Kate fan.

I feel like this is one of the more boring bday pics Kate has released, but maybe it was the best one in terms of his smile etc.

  15. Sofia says:

He looks like a good mix of both Kate and William. I’ve seen pictures of both when they were younger and they’ve got a resemblance to George.

As for same shirt, maybe he just wore the same shirt for two different occasions. Or the Cambridges take a bunch of photos at one time because they’ve got a few milestones next to each other.

    Happy birthday George!

    • FicklePickle says:

Or he has more than one of the same green polo shirt…I mean, I know they’re rich and all and don’t like repeating outfits, but surely even THEY have multiples of particular polo shirts and such.

  16. tempest prognosticator says:

Happy birthday old boy. He’s a right cutie pie.

  17. Case says:

I love seeing these kids wear normal clothes and not those stuffy old-fashioned things she often dresses them in. Their children are beautiful.

    • Green Desert says:

Agreed! Such cute kids, I love it when they are dressed like contemporary children. :)

  18. ChillyWilly says:

Aw, I like the one in the camo shirt the best. You’re a cutie, George! Congrats on graduating out of Christopher Robin cosplay!

  19. The Hench says:

Re the green polo shirt – perhaps Kate stocks her children’s wardrobes like she does her own – multiple versions of very similar things in very similar colours? Maybe we can look forward to an array of green polo shirts for George FOR THE REST OF HIS CHILDHOOD……

  20. Hope says:

So, volunteering was only for Charlotte’s pictures? Really shows how the Cambridges used the pandemic as a prop rather than being serious about teaching their kids about helping out.

  21. Ginger says:

The Cambridge stans/ Meghan haters are going off on Omid because he called George by his name and not HRH Prince George. I guess since Sussex Royal is no more they have to go off on someone lol

    • Nic919 says:

Someone also accused him of only using Kate even thought her title was in the same tweet. They are bored I guess. Meanwhile Omid will be laughing all the way to the bank.

    • Tessa says:

The Cambridge stans are also adamant about what a “normal family they are.” Yet get snippy when a 7 year old is not called by his “royal title.”

    • Carolind says:

It bugs me when the Cambridges refer to their children by the child’s title. They should be using first name only. Bad for the child and we are not plebs.

  22. Charfromdarock says:

Cute kid. He looks more Middleton to me and hopefully will continue to take after his mother’s side.

  23. Laalaa says:

He looks like King George to me all the way, his greatgreatgrandpa (?)

  24. Miss617 says:

From the nose down he looks more and more like William every year. He’s probably the best mix of the two of them out of all the kids, as Charlotte’s all Windsor and Louis is all Middleton.

  25. Marjorie says:

Every time the Cambridges post a photo with any objects in the background, they get in trouble. You know, the fake office with land lines, the Obama visit with the slave painting….so they just show blank walls and generic grassy areas now.

    George is cute, however.

  26. Sorella says:

Those kids are alllll super cute!! George looks like a bright and curious boy and Louis is gonna be a looker!! Charlotte must love having brothers as bookends but I am hoping they have a girl for her to have a sister.

  27. bitchy architect says:

uhm cute kids, horrendous photo. too dark and the crooked lines behind him….

  28. so_annoyed says:

Super cute kids, and good for her to trying to learn to take better photos of them herself! I teach photography workshops all over the world and moms are my main clients, ones who just want to take beautiful, everyday photographs, of their children.

  29. Flying Fish says:

    I am bored.

  30. Kate says:

I know I’ll probably be burned at the stake for even imagining this… but how heads would roll if later in life he and North West became a couple…. take a breath, it’s ok, it’s not real- just a what if. Both come from (how to be nice?) interesting families? Lol

    • Lucia says:

Well I don’t think you should be burned at the stake, but it is a creepy comment…

      • Kate says:

Yeah… super creepy to think that Prince George will someday date and marry. *rolls eyes*

      • Lucia says:

Yeah I’m going to stand by my comment that speculating about two (real life) literal children that you don’t know, dating each other in the future is…creepy. Let me think about that again. Yep. Creepy. Speculate about the adults, but leave the kids out please. Otherwise that’s…creepy.

    • yinyang says:

No way, Kate will never allow it, unless she is lily white and aristocrat too.

  31. notasugarhere says:

‘Also: this photo was taken on the same day as William’s birthday photos. George is wearing the same polo. That must have been Photoshoot Day at Casa de Cambridge.’

Must have been one of those few times William wasn’t off in the Rose bushes. When the kids head back to school, Kate goes to London with them, leaving William and Rose alone in the country most of the week.

    • Carolind says:

Notasugarhere Not everything in the Cambridges garden lovely but you do know that Britain has been on lockdown and the living arrangements that entailed and still does? It is also known that William and Kate share the school run. There would be hidden comments in the press if they were living in separate houses as there have been about other stuff.

  32. Sass says:

Aaaaah he’s so cute! Happy birthday to George.

I actually really love that last shot from Instagram. I greatly dislike camo but it’s so refreshing to see George in a tee shirt like any other kid. He looks really happy and carefree! 🥰
