Prince Harry’s texts to Meghan were ‘full of emojis,’ especially the ghost emoji

The Duchess Of Sussex Visits The Hubb Community Kitchen

I remember years ago, back when Prince Harry was dating Cressida Bonas, covering some story about how they were always texting and “it’s emoji central.” I said at the time that they should just use their words like adults! But apparently it’s a Thing for Harry. He is the Emoji Prince. He courted his then-future wife with texts and emojis. Specifically, the ghost emoji! People Magazine has even more excerpts from Finding Freedom, including Harry’s love of ghost emojis and how he thought Meghan was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. *insert crying emoji, followed by a heart emoji, followed by the ghost emoji*

Prince Harry’s unexpected texting style charmed Meghan Markle from the start! After the prince left his blind date with Meghan in the summer of 2016, he knew he had met his match.

“Wow,” [Harry] later confessed to a friend, according to the best-selling book Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family. “The most beautiful woman I’ve seen in my life.”

At the evening meetup with pals at London’s Soho House, Meghan and Harry were “in their own little world,” a source says in the book by veteran royal journalists Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand. Later that night, Harry wasted no time in texting Meghan, who was back in her hotel room.

“His messages were often short and full of emojis, in particular the ghost emoji, which he often used instead of a smiley face,” write the authors. “For what reason? Nobody knows. But Meghan found his texting etiquette funny and adorable, just like the prince.”

Added a friend of Meghan’s, “He definitely didn’t hide the fact that he was keen. He wanted her to know he was very interested.” And the feeling was mutual. The next night, they met up again — this time, just the two of them.

“It was as if Harry was in a trance,” another friend said.

[From People]

“He definitely didn’t hide the fact that he was keen.” I wish more men were like this, although I say that with the understanding that men are easily confused and some think “being demonstrative and openly adoring without caring about ‘looking cool’” somehow translates to “doxxing a woman because she didn’t respond when you mansplained menstruation to her.” Harry has always worn his heart on his sleeve, and in Meghan, I think he just found someone who was equally ready to “fall head over heels.” All that being said, I’m a big believer in the Sex and City theory of “his light was on.” That was Harry too – his light was on, he was ready to get married, he was ready to fall this hard and this fast. *insert ghost emoji, taxi emoji, light bulb emoji, lightning bolt emoji, heart emoji, then three more ghost emojis for good measure*

  1. Eleonor says:

I fall for men who text in full sentences!

  2. Laalaa says:

Oh, yes, the older I get, the better I see Miranda being so right about the light being on. And it turns out, she was right about Trey, for whom she expressed this opinion.

I don’t like when things go so fast, but I know every person is different. When you know, you know – they knew.

    • Lisa says:

Absolutely agree. Timing is everything and for them the timing was right.

      • L4frimaire says:

I agree that part of it was timing. There always the tale of the boyfriend who breaks up with you, and then he marries the next person he meets. So there’s some truth to that. Also Meghan was probably ready ,especially if you want to have children.

    • STRIPE says:

I never saw SATC – can someone explain this reference for me?

      • Onerous says:

Essentially that men won’t settle down until they’re ready – when their “light is on” like when a taxi is available. And when their light is on, it doesn’t matter who so much as when.

      • Laalaa says:

Charlotte meets Trey and says it’s love at first sight, it’s meant to be. They get engaged after a month.
Miranda says – it’s not love. His light is on. Men are like cabs, when they are available, their light turns on and the next woman they meet, they marry. It’s dumb luck.

      • Anna says:

I don’t remember the exact context but the theory is that you can be with a man for10 years and he’s not going to marry you if he’s not ready. And then suddenly his light is on for marriage and he’ll marry the first woman he has a a relationship with. My theory is that the previous woman got him used to the idea of marriage but he resents her for it so the one coming without a baggage is the one he’ll commit to :-)

      • MerryGirl says:

This “10 year no commitment, then immediate commitment with the next woman” is so Dave Clark/Princess Beatrice that the ‘light on’ works perfectly here. However, I don’t buy that Prince Harry would have married just any woman who was around as he spoke before about how hard it was finding someone who suited the job of being a Royal and who shared his ideals and passions; because he knew what he was looking for, I think he immediately recognized it in Meghan, hence he wasted no time in pursuing her.

    • Eleonor says:

Miranda is an amazing character! I get her better the more as I get older .
I am trying to buy my own apartment. IT’S JUST ME. I have become Miranda.
      Sorry for the offtopic.

      • Lavande says:

It’s not just you. Our whole culture (Well not yet but many women) is waking up to how wise her ways are. Dont know her quotes but I liked her vibe and outlook. The quote you shared made me think of a reddit group I’ve seen called female dating strategy. Lots of gems there

      • Juniper says:

There’s a youtube video that discusses this very subject! That Miranda is the one character that stood the test of time.

I am old and always worry that the emoji I want to use means something that I don’t know! I get anxious about it, so pretty much stick to the basic ones. Sometimes I do the old-fashioned colon and parenthesis.

So, does the ghost mean anything other than a ghost? I don’t get why he’d use it so much

    • Prettykrazee says:

It means Hey or Hi Boo!

I use emojis all the time but I don’t talk in emoji. I use the traditional ones. But I use gifs more bc the are so funny to me.

      • manda says:

oh, that’s cute!! I would be so charmed by that. Agreed on the GIFs, some of those are hilarious

    • CROOKSNNANNIES says:

I’m not saying you’re old, but that is a fair concern! My MIL used to send the eggplant emoji all the time when she was cooking or grocery shopping and I finally had to explain hahaha

    • Joanna says:

I always worry about that too!

  4. aquarius64 says:

It’s nice to see a warm story about Harry and Meghan for once. Harry knew what he wanted and wasn’t going to string Meghan along for ten years like William did with Kate. I get that William had to be super sure given his position but Kate should have had the ring in five years. The cheating on her watch should have been clue no. 2 for Kate.

    • Osty says:

The social climber would have endured everything for that ring and future position. She and her pimp mum wanted that more than her happiness and would have done and accepted anything for it . Hell he is still cheating and the woman is looking the other way . I’m beginning to think it was part of the contract he signed before wills agreed to marry her .

    • Brandy Alexander says:

Meh. There’s also a difference between starting to date at 18 and starting in your mid 30′s. I was once engaged to a man I started dating at 18. He gave me a ring at 22, and I wore it but knew there was no way I would marry him and never started making plans for it. There are plenty of things to criticize Will & Kate for, but in my opinion not getting married at 22 isn’t one of them.

      • L4frimaire says:

Agree, I don’t have a problem with their time frame because they met in college. What I don’t understand is that she never attempted to build a career, building interests and causes while they were dating. She really was just waiting around.

    • Alexandria says:

I don’t think there should be a set number of years Kate should have gotten the ring. They met at a young age. People who have had a 1 year or 10 year relationship can still be devoted and have a great marriage.

The problem was Kate endured the cheating and Kate did not make a life or career of her own. That is…I can use so many words but it’s just not HEALTHY.

  5. Osty says:

Harry is a lovely person, u can see how much he loves Meghan by just looking at how he looks at her. He loves her so much and isnt afraid to say it to the whole world. He is goofy n light so it makes it easier to be happy in his presence. He is such a gentleman and I pray they continue to be happy and in love . I wouldn’t forget how proud he was of her when she gave birth to archie. Charles with all his faults also loves camilla dearly and he shows it .
No wonder keen is jealous of Meghan for getting all Harry’s love and taking him away.

  6. Mtec says:

Haha maybe the Ghost emoji 👻 Had to do with an inside joke between them from that date. Or code for something else. I remember when they interviewed Meghan’s Wedding Make-up artist friend, he mentioned how she replied with an emoji when he told her about Bey and Jay using her painting in the bg of their Brit award acceptance video.

Harry’s phone has also been hacked before no? Maybe he prefers texting in emojis in case that ever happens again.

    • Osty says:

      This makes sense

    • Noodle says:

Someone younger and hipper than I explained it means “Hi Boo!” Like, a play on the word for boy/girlfriend, but “Boo” like a ghost. I’ve probably removed all sense of cuteness of it by over-explaining.

      • Mtec says:

        @Noodle
Haha I get what you mean. I thought that too! But didn’t mention it because after a first date that might have been too soon to call someone their “boo” no? Though they did allegedly move pretty fast so who knows 🤷🏽‍♀️

  7. bub244 says:

This is cute but the details are so personal!! I feel a bit embarrassed reading this, like I am intruding on something private.

    • Kris Jung-Un says:

Right? Soooo personal… and I worry about H&M, with such details being out there, because this is what led to the MOS case.

People will use this against them

    • Ginger says:

I hate that they outed Harry’s personal Instagram handle. They shouldn’t have done that.

      • Babz says:

Hopefully, he had already changed his user name or deleted the account all together. I’m still convinced he’s created new accounts and lurks on social media, and still takes notes of who said what. He’s not about to let anything get past him.

    • Jules says:

      It’s so cringe.

  8. Becks1 says:

Aw I love thinking of Harry so excited he started texting her right away.

  9. taylor says:

I somehow missed that their first date was amongst other friends? Is this a new detail?

    • GR says:

@Taylor – I don’t remember hearing that before either. But I guess all the information available in the UK has been filtered through the Times, and everything published in the US is via People.

    • MerryGirl says:

No it isn’t a new detail….in their engagement interview, Harry mentioned that their first blind dates was with mutual friends and when they went to Botswana that’s when they were by themselves for the first time.

  10. Edna says:

I’m all here for the romance. This is rom-com material. They could title that iconic pic of them walking in the rain under the umbrella as Finding Freedom starring Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. ❤️❤️

    • candy says:

They should make a real movie. Not a lifetime movie, but an actual real romance. This is the stuff movies are made of!

  11. Loretta says:

Harry is really a sweet man with a golden heart. I love this couple so much!

  12. OriginalLala says:

I had an ex who loved to text with emojis, drove me nuts – use words, we are adults! Lol

  13. Tiff says:

She must really love him because if someone sent me a bunch of ghost emojis I would probably think it was a threat and block them!

  14. LaUnicaAngelina says:

This is so cute! The night I met my now husband, I gave him my cell number. As soon as he left the bar with friends, he called my phone to make sure it wasn’t a fake number. Lol! I thought it was cute.

  15. Ennie says:

Where I live we say that men marry when they want, women, when they can.
It is not at all true, but I find that it is for men.
They can be with a great woman early on,
    And won’t marry her.
In Harry’s case, I think he purportedly waited, he might have married young love Chelsy, but the others, I’m not so sure. In any case, Chelsy would’ve hated that life. I think that if they had made it, they would’ve wound up living in Africa (like they wanted him with Meghan). What he has now is perfect. She is the whole package.

  16. Mariane says:

Aww this was cute to read. I too remembered Meghan’s make up artist mentioning her replying with a emoji when he told her about beyonce/jayz tribute. I think they prefer to communicate like this incase they’re hacked or someone betrays their trust.
I’m so curious about their dating days. Like where did they go in Canada or london?? I hope we hear it from them instead of second sources

  17. Stacy Dresden says:

So cute. I am rooting for them.

  18. one of the Marys says:

My eyes aren’t good enough to see the emojis, to pick them or to read them! I miss a lot on Instagram because I can’t see it and can’t enlarge it, oh well

  19. Sunday says:

I mean, this is cute but like… (nearly) everyone uses emojis. What an exclusive! This just in: Meghan once sent a gif!!!!!! OMG!

The way this is written makes it sound like they’re writing with emojis like hieroglyphics. I’m sure there were some words in there, too!

To me, this “story” has the same energy as AOC having to explain what Twitch is to Congress and GOP senators questioning Zuckerberg about why their grandkids haven’t liked their Facebook posts.

  20. candy says:

One time my boyfriend said “do you know how many layers I’ve peeled off by being with you?” all the while I thought he wasn’t really showing his emotions that much (*cry laugh emoji*). Men aren’t encouraged to open up. My BF was raised in a strict military family and emotions weren’t allowed. So we’ve had to work through some of that. Our society does make it harder for boys and men to cry and show feelings in my opinion.

  21. tempest prognosticator says:

If they were in their twenties or teenagers I’d think it was cute, but whatever. It worked for them.

  22. Case says:

Sorry but how the heck does anyone know what Harry’s texts to Meghan contained???

  23. Alexandria says:

Even without this excerpt, you can compare the way Harry looked at Meghan during the wedding with his father and his brother looking at their brides. That cannot be faked. Even without this excerpt, Harry always tries to hold Meg’s hand or her waist.

I am very happy for Harry and I wish their family lots of happiness. I hope Prince Harry reads Celebitchy a lot so that he knows he and Meg have people rooting for them.

  24. L4frimaire says:

This GenXr is old! Had no idea ghost emoji was hey boo! It’s cute. I grew up writing complete sentences and actually phoning people but I love emojis and GIFs.

  25. Lala11_7 says:

    I was Harry’s age when I met THE ONE…in 2001…and yes it was LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT…and it’s a good thing that cell phones with emojis weren’t around then…cause I woulda been a ❣💙U 👻 FOOL 😅😄🤣😁

  26. Lea says:

Honestly when I read that kind of stuff it gives me hope. Not to meet a prince, but to meet a good guy I could fall in love with.
I turned 31, and I was a bit depressed because my love life has just been failure after failure, when I see most of my friends in happy relationships. I also happen to have a crappy family like Meghan’s, so I relate to her a lot.
I love that they fell in love in their mid to late thirties as if they were teenagers.

    • candy says:

Don’t despair, I met my true love at 34 after many many miserable short-term relationships. He was 42. I had pretty much given up and thought I would be single forever.

    • Joanna says:

You’re never too old to fall in love. I met a lady who was 55 and had just gotten married. Don’t despair, love can come at any age.

  27. Moo says:

They are such a hot couple. I met my love 13 years before we got together. Wish we’d done it sooner, but so glad we did. I was ready to be single forever after a bad relationship. Now I am learning healthy ways to be in relationship.

  28. Busyann says:

My husband writes texts to me in emoji and I have no idea what they mean. If I see smiles and hearts and kisses I’m okay with it, but is this a thing? Lol.

I dont know if this is a “lights being on” situation though. Harry was absolutely ready and the light (or urgency) was probably on a bit more than it had been in previous years, but I seem to remember Harry always wanting to be married and have kids. So much that it felt like the potential was there for any of his previous relationships to end up in marriage, eventually.

I think so many things can be true with Harry and Meghan. They fell hard and fast, the light was on, they just knew, AND, while I hate to say this, I think there may also be a bit of Meghan is the only one that said yes, going on. Regardless, he picked a good wife. That family was stupid to let both of them go.

    • Q says:

Meghan is the only woman he’s proposed to so idk what you’re talking about..

      • Amy Too says:

But people do talk about their future plans when they’re in a relationship. Maybe Meghan is the only one he proposed to because she’s the only one who seemed amenable to joining the royal family. I don’t think it diminishes their relationship, marriage, or love, to say that he may have thought about marriage with other women but they weren’t interested.
