FF: Duchess Meghan considered a home birth but she decided against it

Sussex Morocco reception

In the early part of 2019, there were endless stories about the Duchess of Sussex’s birthing plans and whether she would give birth at St. Mary’s Hospital, the Lindo Wing, where the Duchess of Cambridge had given birth to all three of her children. There was speculation about whether Meghan would do a home birth, whether she would do a hospital photocall with the baby, and whether she would “copy Kate” birth-wise. Finding Freedom details a lot of what went into the Sussexes’ decisions around the birth of Archie, which we already heard a little bit about last week. Sources say that Meghan really did think about a home birth but as her due date approached, those home-birth plans “had long been put to rest.”

A source says: “Meg knew it would be a hospital birth for a few months. All she cared about was having the baby in the safest way possible. She was more and more nervous as she approached the due date, so I would say in some ways it was a relief for her to be doing it in a traditional hospital.”

Also contradictory to reports, Meghan never considered giving birth at the Lindo Wing, where Kate delivered all three of her children, Diana had William and Harry, and Princess Anne had Peter and Zara. Meghan wanted somewhere more discreet than St. Mary’s Hospital.

The Portland Hospital—a US-owned hospital popular with celebrities and the expat American community in London—was where Beatrice and Eugenie were born. It offered not only state-of-the-art care but also an underground entrance, where blacked-out SUVs driving in and out were the norm. Harry and Meghan, who were never spotted entering or leaving Portland, didn’t tell anyone about their hospital choice, not even their closest aides or friends.

[From Finding Freedom: Harry, Meghan, and the Making of a Modern Royal Family]

The only people Meghan and Harry told in advance about their choice of Portland Hospital were Doria and Meghan’s medical team, including her well-respected OBGYN Dr. Penelope Law. FF also notes that contrary to speculation, “Meghan did not deliver by C-section” and the birth was “uncomplicated” and Meghan “was simply relieved it had gone well—and to have her ‘beautiful, sweet little boy’ in her arms for the first time.” Meghan didn’t have to stay in the hospital for very long – she was released quickly and sent home to recover and spend time with the baby, under the careful monitor of medical staff.

As for the new dad, he spent a chunk of time informing everyone of the birth himself – he called and texted friends, the Queen and Prince Philip, Charles and William and he sent photos and posted to the royal cousins’ WhatsApp. He also made sure to include Diana’s family in the notifications, including Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Lady Jane Fellowes and the Earl Charles Spencer. Doria Ragland apparently “messaged Thomas with the news, which Meghan had asked her to do. The new mother did not want him to find out after the rest of the world. But she didn’t want to know whether her father replied to her mother’s text.” Ugh.

Between the courtiers, the awful press, the backstabbing Windsors and her own horrible half sister and father-ugh, she’s really been through the wringer. I hope her next pregnancy is wonderful and peaceful and she can just chill in Santa Barbara and do whatever the hell she wants.

Yet again we see how savvy they are, they told NO-ONE about their plans. If you want to do things your way you lock that stuff down. Good for them.

Whatever plan she felt best with was the right one for her! I loved my home birth because I didn’t have to go anywhere (no drive home, no getting the baby in the car seat). I could just keep my bleeding body in bed and chill and the midwives came to me for check ups. I wonder what her plan will be if she has another baby.

Me too! My first labor went fast, and would have been beside the road if we hadn’t happened to be near an town with an ambulance on our way to a hospital. I did not care for all of the movement or having my baby snatched away once we got to a hospital. Stayed home for number two and it was wonderful to not have all of the people around, just my midwife and her assistant. My labor was even quicker and I went into transition the moment my midwife walked in the door 😀 I had follow up care with my midwife and county health nurse. So much better!

Everything was so complicated at that time. I’m so glad Archie’s birth was not.

It was sweet from her to tell her mother to inform her dad about Archie. He really didn’t deserve that attention. She will probably never stop loving her dad which makes it even more sad. To be betrayed by someone you love and care is the worst kind of pain. I know it firsthand.

I agree, it was very thoughtful of her. Even if her father didn’t deserve the consideration, it’s hard to completely write off a parent. And she had the good sense to not want to know if he responded.

I agree with not wanting to know if Thomas responded. the aim was to let dad know he had a grandson. if he didn’t respond and she was told this, it could have upset her. or if he responded and said some crap, it could have upset her too. So she made the best call.

She just radiates beauty and charm. I love her so much.

I am happy to learn that the birth wasn’t complicated and she was able to return home soon after giving birth. It seems the only way to keep things out of the BM is to not inform anyone in that family until after the fact. Harry finally learned to keep everything on lockdown where his family is concerned and this allowed Meghan the peace she needed to get through her birthing experience. She’s a better person than me because no way I would have informed Thomas Markle if he was my father, she’s remarkable.

So Thomas lied AGAIN as pretty sure he said he heard on the radio. And also he had no contact with Doria.

Obviously the situation with her father is awful for Meghan but can’t imagine how it was for Doria to see him attacking their child and not being able to do much about it.

Its heartbreaking to read that she told her mother to inform Thomas of his grandsons birth despite how he betrayed her😪 that wound will probably not heal but its clear she loves her father.
I’m happy she had a safe quick birth. She’ll
have less hassle with next baby(twins) away from the toxic backstabbing vultures in the UK.
