Joe Biden is already behaving like the president-elect as his electoral lead grows

Biden Addresses the Nation

Once again, I give Joe Biden so much credit. He has been the presidential one. For the last month of his campaign, he went entirely positive, with ads directed at encouraging Americans to feel unified and proud. Even when the Red Mirage was happening Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, Biden and his team kept their eye on the long term – every vote must be counted, and when every vote is counted, it will be good news for the Democrats. On MSNBC last night, they said that Biden had directed senior staff to not make fun of Donald Trump or mock Trump’s crazy tweets, that they all needed to behave with civility, like the transition team for the president-elect.

And so here we are. When I looked at the numbers and trends yesterday around 11 am, it seemed clear that the fastest path for victory for Biden would be Nevada-Arizona-Wisconsin-Michigan. Even without Pennsylvania and Georgia, that foursome gets Biden to 270. Since I wrote that, Wisconsin, Arizona and Michigan have all been called for Biden. Called by the news media, including Fox News. Nevada is still counting (as are the other states), but it is believed that we’ll have Nevada’s numbers later today or maybe even Friday. Biden’s lead there is slender, but like so many states, the ballots left to be processed are the ones in Democratic strongholds.

Meanwhile, Pennsylvania – which has 20 electoral votes, which would be “electoral gravy” if and when Nevada confirms – is still processing hundreds of thousands of absentee ballots, once again from areas of the state which are believed to be “good for Biden,” breaking for him between 60-78%. Right now, as of Thursday early morning, the Penn count is: 3,215,983 votes for Trump, and 3,051,565 votes for Biden. For much of Wednesday, Trump’s vote count lead was more than 500K, so Biden has already shrunk that lead considerably, and there are still so many ballots left to be processed.

Considering the slim margins Trump had in 2016 when he won Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, I don’t mind it at all that it’s come down to the wire in those three states yet again and that the worm has turned. Sure, Biden’s wins in some states are smaller than I thought they would be. But Democrats really need to stop being so morose about this sh-t. A win is a win. We’re winning. Our guy is behaving like a calm, dignified president-elect. Our country is on the brink of no longer being an international embarrassment. We might actually get real action on a deadly pandemic. We’re about to get a president who treats people with dignity, respect and civility.

Here’s Biden’s Keep The Faith, We’re Winning This speech yesterday afternoon. This is how a president speaks to the nation.

My stomach is killing me, three days now. I couldn’t believe when I woke up this morning and no new states were called for Biden. I can’t tweet about it because 500 people will race in to reply “stay calm. breath. we knew this would happen”. And then that sends me straight into the stratosphere and I will be banned for certain. So I just sit here. Stomach killing me, stewing.

    • lanne says:

I woke up with a 101 temperature, which I know is just stress and not sleeping. But I can’t go to work with a high temperature, so I think I’ll just spend the day resting (and grading papers, which are vastly overdue but I haven’t been able to concentrate enough to grade)

    • Teresa says:

I have morning sickness and have IBS. I’ve definitely lost weight this week in the bathroom. This has been the most stressful week and I won’t be happy until Biden is declared.
You’re not alone in the stress, let’s pray we get a Biden result today.
Also yes if he wins this is a win for America. To restore a level of respect to our country is paramount right now.

      • Darla says:

I’m sorry, that must make everything much worse. I pray this ends today, with a Biden call.

      • Lady D says:

Teresa, I’m really sorry about the stress you have to deal with right now, especially with the added challenges of IBS, but congrats on your morning sickness:)

      • Agirlandherdog says:

I don’t have morning sickness, but I commiserate on the IBS. I changed my diet several years ago, and haven’t had any issues until the last several weeks. I’ve lost 10lbs since I saw my dr at the end of September. No diet or exercise changes. Just…

    • ThEHufflepuffLizLemon says:

I’m so sorry Darla! You’re entitled to your rage and stress! This is awful and stressful. Just try to channel it in the least harmful ways.

I had a laparoscopic hysterectomy on 10/29 (voted early), and I was on the painkillers for a few days, which to me kind of dull everything, including feelings. I switched to Ibuprofen two days and I am feeling so much better emotionally. This morning I woke up at 5AM, but it’s not with the existential dread I’ve been experiencing for months. I just felt… hopeful. 🤷🏻‍♀️

      • Poisonella says:

I am glad you’re feeling better, that’s a big surgery even when done laproscopically. I am hopeful too.

      • ThEHufflepuffLizLemon says:

Thank you! Soooo glad it’s over, was in planning pre-pandemic but then, you know *gestures around* all this nonsense happened.

      • H says:

I had a hysterectomy two years ago. Best advice I got: Rest, rest and more rest. Take Gas-X and a stool softener and don’t lift anything. I wish you a speedy recovery as a fellow Hufflepuff.

    • Josie Bean says:

Well, it looks like Nevada will be the king maker. Considering they have voted Democrat the last few elections, I am no longer feeling quite so sick. However, I still went out and bought a pack of cigarettes (only an occasional smoker), some wine and a beautiful lemon cake with ice cream to get me through these stressful days. Yesterday was hard – today not so bad.

    • Frida_K says:

      Right there with you.

I normally avoid sugar because it makes my nose run and my sinuses clog. I have been eating sugary desserts daily since Tuesday, which seems like a year ago, and I can barely breathe because my nose is so stuffy.

This is stressful and it needs to end soon. I just want him to be declared president-elect so that I can calm down just a notch.

We can all only do our best, and pooh-poohing others’ reactions is not helpful. You’re doing your best and that’s all that you can do.

I hope they call it for him today.

      • fluffy_bunny says:

You need one of those automatic neti pots made by Navage. I ordered one off of amazon and I could even use my health spending account. It works great.

      • HoofRat says:

Sugar is my weakness, but it seems to make my arthritis worse, so I try to avoid it. I even gave away my surplus trick-or-treat goodies, thinking that would save me from election-related binging. Then I went to the drugstore on Monday; and I’ve been hobbling around and stress-snarfing Reese’s ever since. Curse you, half-price Halloween candy!!

      • Giddy says:

Fluffy bunny, I have a Navage and love it. After I use it I can breathe and my doctor recommended it over using a Neti pot.

    • Katie says:

Same. Here with you in stress induced anxiety. Stomach cramps and just for shits and giggles my hair started falling out yesterday. I had a child in the hospital a few years ago and they didn’t know what was wrong but things were looking very bad. Every hour they’d come in with a new diagnosis and then it would change the next time we spoke to his doctors (thank goodness he is fine now). This feels like that. Up and down, in and out, good and bad. Anxiety and stress after events like this election are real, hoping you can get some relief once this is over, sending elbow bumps from a fellow anxious Biden fan.

      • Giddy says:

Congratulations on your new addition. It’s looking like today will be the day to relieve our stress as Biden goes over 270! The

    • MerlinsMom1018 says:

      @Darla.
Move over. I’m gonna be sitting right next to you. In all my 40+ years of voting, I have NEVER been so anxious.
      Those Arizona numbers today…ugh

    • Sophie says:

Genuinely, I sympathise so much. I live in the UK, and I’ve endured 2 sleepless nights and upset stressy stomachs from this. There is just so much riding on it, and I don’t know how you’re coping actually living IN the United States. Sending much love and support your way, know that lots of people abroad are also keeping fingers and toes crossed that Biden prevails. We see you.

    • Moorele says:

I feel you! Fingers crossed, we got this!

    • vesper says:

I feel a level of exhaustion that I can not comprehend. I’m so tired all the time, at least since Tuesday. Trying to focus on work is nearly impossible. I am not at the top of my game at all. I need this s$%& to be over already. But Biden’s voice is really calming and reassuring. I appreciate so much about him and Kamala right now. Cake with buttercream is helping too!

  2. Galena says:

I’m not morose over the slim win… Just unclear what he can do without Congress, just electing the president is not enough.
The only chance for our democracy is abolishing electoral college, and adding two more seats on the court to even it out again…statehood as well, but all of these are long shots with these slim margins

    • Esmom says:

The Senate could end up at 50-50 still. With VP Harris as the tie breaker.

Trying to keep the faith. Although now I’m worried about AZ again. Sigh.

      • Agirlandherdog says:

Collins and Murkowski could be swing votes. I think the polls leading up to 11/3 left them shook, and they acted accordingly with the Barrett bullsh*t. Then there are the midterms in two years. Plus, trump has managed to do a lot of damage thru executive orders. These are orders Biden can revoke and implement his own orders to start repairing the damage.

    • Snuffles says:

Pretty sure the Democrats still have control in Congress. It’s the Senate that is up in the air.

And Biden can do a hell of a lot. Let’s start with him being a sane normal person who will be steady and Presidential. A lot of people in the country take their cue from the president and that will make a huge difference.

Next, Biden will bring in an experienced and competent administration. Cabinet members and other experienced staff in every department.

Also, I believe he can reverse every single Executive Order put forth by Trump. Don’t forget that Trump largely abused his presidential power and frequently ruled by decree.

Finally, I have a feeling that for a lot of more traditional and moderate Republican Congress and Senate members, the pressure to cave to the dictator will be over and they will behave in a more bipartisan manner.

      • Ginger says:

I agree. Biden is a highly respected politician. He said he wants to work with both sides so I have hope.

I do hope they call it today. This is so stressful.

      • Becks1 says:

I am hoping your last paragraph turns out to be true. I think many people are tired of the hyper partisanship, which often means nothing gets done. And I think the Congressional Rs really hated dealing with Trump. Sure they loved confirming his judges, but I imagine trying to nail down any kind of deal with him was just disastrous.

      • Ash says:

I too hope that last paragraph ends up being true – but I have zero faith that it will be. The fact that this election is so close basically gives them a mandate to continue as they’ve been doing, given that such a large portion of the electorate appear to approve of this behavior to the point that they wanted it for four more years.

      • Oh-Dear says:

and the senate is up for grabs still, as Georgia’s 2 senate seats are close enough right now to require a run off.

    • Chris says:

Biden can appoint a new head of the DOJ which may mean the new DOJ may drop the case against Obamacare in the supreme court. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

I’m not thrilled about the underperformance of democratic senators but I don’t think we’ll have this kind of support from voters for Republican candidates again without trump on the ticket a la 2018. They were definitely buoyed by hardcore trumpers.

I’m also happy that the person with the nuke codes wont be a lunatic.

      • Becks1 says:

I mean, we really cant underestimate the importance of your last sentence.

      • Midnight@theOasis says:

Agree. The thing now is to regroup and start planning for the 2022 mid terms. Just keep making Slow but steady gains.

      • Lightpurple says:

Biden can’t do anything with the DOJ until January 20. The Supremes hear the ACA case next week. They could have ruled on it by January. Sorry to be a downer on that but it scares me to death. And MCConnell rushed the confirmation of Jesse Barrett’s evil puppet wife Amy Covid for that very purpose.

      • Agirlandherdog says:

Ditto what LP said. No doubt, it’s going to be scary if the ACA is dismantled before Biden’s sworn in.

    • kimberlu says:

even of i dont get who i want as president, I would never abolish the electoral. While I don’t agree with much of the middle of the country, I find it important to understand them and find out where we have middle ground..

      • Agirlandherdog says:

I’m not sure where you live kimberlu, but the way the electoral college is weighted, the vote of someone who lives in the middle of the country (depending on state) is often worth three times more than someone in say, Virginia, whose vote isn’t even worth one whole vote in the EC system. I’m sorry, but that’s just not fair. If they want to keep the EC, it needs to be significantly revamped. We’re still using a system developed in the 1780’s! If you live in a state that does not split votes (most of them), if the candidate you voted for loses the popular vote in that state (even by a small margin), your vote doesn’t count at all. Also, most states don’t even have laws that require electors to cast their vote for the candidate who wins the popular vote in that state. They can go completely rogue! It’s ridiculous.

      • Veronica S. says:

The electoral college isn’t really helping the middle of the country, though. Have you seen Republicans or Democrats invest in rural infrastructure for them? Provide increased revenue beyond the farm subsidies? Fixed the poverty issue? You see any of those candidates giving more than a passing glance to of any of those Midwest/Southern states?

It gives red states the illusion of winning, but in reality? It makes them a second thought, the flyover nothing. Politicians don’t have to care about them because they’re a sure bet, same as they don’t have to care in the West Coast/Northeast blocks. In reality, neither the coastal contingent nor the landlocked states fundamentally matter because of it. It comes down to 9-10 states to decide the election. That’s it. That’s all who matters. The rest of y’all? Politically worthless.

  3. smegmoria says:

My family bought BIG fireworks for the win. Two houses down is covered in trump flags. Cant wait to set them off and for my tummy to settle down. Still so nervous.

    • Esmom says:

Lol. It’s funny, my neighborhood has been a sea of Biden-Harris signs for months but on election day two “brave patriots” people put out Trump signs, lol. I wonder how long they’ll stay up.

And my college age son, who’s studying from home this semester, has been talking about fireworks, too.

    • Agirlandherdog says:

I live in a small liberal town in a very red state. One person put up a trump flag, the neighbor put up Biden/Harris signs. The neighbor then added a second trump flag, so another neighbor constructed a small BLM/LGBTQ+ billboard in their yard. It just keeps escalating, but the trump supporter is outnumbered here.

      • fluffy_bunny says:

This reminds me of my grandfather. He always had billboard sized signs in the yard. He lived right next to an on ramp for I-95. He also sold used cars out of the driveway.

  4. Val says:

I can’t function until Biden actually wins. I can’t move on with my life. This is excruciating and stressful. I knew this would happen, but the reality is painful at the very least.

    • Darla says:

Yep, me too. It’s horrific. Just end this.

    • Shane says:

I can’t function either. I’ve spent 2 days on twitter instead of working. Also, found this funny:

“Biden had directed senior staff to not make fun of Donald Trump or mock Trump’s crazy tweets, that they all needed to behave with civility, like the transition team for the president-elect.”

Don’t worry Joe and team. The jokes are flying on twitter on their own without their contribution.

      • Heather G says:

I found it hilarious as well! God bless Biden for being mature, above-board and Presidential. Praying today goes smoothly and a Biden victory is secured.

For those of you who need a laugh…I heard a good joke this morning on a political show – this lady said, “the only way that Trump can get to 270 is if he loses 50 pounds”! LOL LOL LOL!

    • Case says:

Same. I’m having so much trouble concentrating at work. The last three days have felt endless. I’m just trying to remind myself that the Biden campaign is very confident, many of the votes left to count are in blue areas of PA, GA, and AZ (the latter of which he’s been projected to win for days), and it’ll all be over hopefully tomorrow. Praying that we know one more state today, at least.

    • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Right lol??? I’m on the floor in a round white room, ‘sitting in a corner’ rocking and intermittently sucking my thumb and eating vegan sour cream and onion sweet potato puffs until Biden has been declared lol. I’m not vegan.

  5. Ann says:

When I turned off the TV late Tuesday night I was distraught with a feeling of utter hopelessness as if a meteor was on its way. I grieved the loss of my country. I woke up Wednesday distraught, afraid to look at the results, but relieved Trump hadn’t yet won. I joined a conference call at 9 am concerned that I may cry, and a few minutes in one of the participants said Michigan was trending blue. That was a pivotal moment of my life, I kid you not. The election wasn’t the blue wave I was expecting, but you’re right, a win is a win. A state can’t be called until it is impossible for the remaining votes to make up the difference, but knowing the remaining votes are from urban areas is enough for me to relax somewhat.

    • antipodean says:

@Ann, you have exactly described how I was feeling on Tuesday night! We could be twinsies! I was still feeling a creeping dread on Wednesday morning, but it is cautiously turning to more confidence that we may be able to begin the process of trying to scrub the orange stains out of America’s fabric, all appendages crossed.

  6. Sierra says:

Please Georgia & North Carolina, turn blue and give us the 3 Senate seats as well.

    • paranormalgirl says:

      Georgia is so close.

    • lucy2 says:

Unless Ossoff somehow crosses 50%, we’re looking at 2 run off elections. Considering many thought the Senate was lost, is freaking amazing.
When this is finally called, we should all take a deep breath, celebrate Biden/Harris, and the fight like hell for those 2 seats in Georgia.

      • Anna says:

Wow, this is amazing! Thank you, Black folks and Beloved Honorable Ancestor John Lewis! Wow wow wow! Waiting with baited breath and sending strength to all!

  7. Eleonor says:

Fingers crossed for all of you.

Biden is a class act human.

The delay with NV is killing me.

“Nevada has been texting “5 minutes away” for an hour and hasn’t even left the house yet.”

    • Chris says:

      Ha! Yup

    • lemonylips says:

this made me laugh so much! thanks for that

    • Brandy Alexander says:

Nevada announced yesterday that they would not not update again until 9:00am local time today. Republicans already challenged their early votes on Monday and lost. They’re being slow and careful. My thing is – literally no body but Fox has called AZ. I am more worried about them than NV.

Also – nobody is reporting it, but here in Nevada, we just voted (by a huge majority, I might add) to amend our constitution to include same sex marriage. We are making history here in the silver state!

      • Becks1 says:

AP and NPR both called Arizona (but I think NPR might just be going off what AP said?) Not sure if AP has rescinded that call.

      • Grant says:

I think that NPR and the AP have both called AZ for Biden. I don’t know why though–I’ve been watching CNN and AZ still seems to be very much in play.

      • Chris says:

They all use the same analysis firm apparently. It’s still up in the air and Maricopa county is a mix of blue and red, however pima county is overwhelmingly blue. So trump will be unlikely be able to overcome Biden’s lead even if it’s close. Due to that analysis of where the ballots are coming from the AP called it early.

I was there for 2016 though like the rest of us and also have long standing political trauma from it like the rest of us, so I won’t celebrate until it’s actually over.

      • Brandy Alexander says:

Thanks for the info, I’ve mostly been going off of CNN & ABC’s maps. I’m still worried about AZ though. I’m not celebrating until it’s a done deal. Even then, I feel like the last four years have given me PTSD and I don’t think I will celebrate until Joe is sworn in.

      • Anna says:

@Brandy Alexander What wonderful news re: same sex constitution amendment! Congrats on making history!

  9. Becks1 says:

I’m not morose because this is shaking out how I thought – razor thin margins in WI, MI and PA. Arizona gives Biden padding and the thought of getting Georgia is icing on the cake.

However, it is worth pointing out that this is not the blue wave we expected and the reasons for that. Trump turned off suburban women, but in many areas enough Hispanics turned out for Trump to make up that difference. Why is that? I also think that many people assumed that voters would just vote straight ticket, and obviously what we are seeing in a lot of states is that people voted against Trump but still voted for other Rebublicans on the ticket.

As Democrats, we need to consider what is missing in our message (or what is missing in how we get our message out) and what we need to change going forward.

    • Esmom says:

Becks, I would respectfully say that one huge factor here is not so much the Democrats’ message but the right wing disinformation ecosystem. The “information” a lot of these people consume on a daily basis is pure fiction. This truly has been the golden age of propaganda, thanks in large part to social media. For example, a nice white suburban lady I know through my kids’ friends is well and truly convinced that a Biden win will mean we will immediately turn into Venezuela. She’s terrified of Black people with a “Marxist agenda.” She immerses herself in media outlets that only reinforce those fears.

We need to figure that out more urgently than almost anything else, imo. Bringing back the Fairness Doctrine, maybe, would be a start.

      • Becks1 says:

But that’s pretty much my point. The Democrat message was NOT enough, in many states, to overcome the right wing disinformation machine. So how do we handle that going forward? That disinformation machine isn’t going to stop. So we need to figure out how to overcome that. We may have good ideas, but if they aren’t getting through to people, then its a problem.

      • Esmom says:

Ah, got it. Getting rid of Fox News might be a good start.

      • Milwaukee Democrat says:

New policies needed to stop disinformation in news media and social media/internet…corporations must be held accountable for allowing the circulation of disinformation.

    • Chris says:

Yeah the news was talking about Biden’s underperformance with cuban Americans and Venezuelans. They’re socially conservative and hate any whiff of socialism. The right wing propaganda of the Democrats turning to socialism worked on them apparently. Lol at Biden being a socialist. I think it’s a good lesson in having a broad coalition amongst the Democrats. One type of democratic candidate will not work everywhere.

      • Also Ali says:

They’re socially conservative and hate any whiff of socialism.

So basically, they are Republican and voted accordingly.

Why are we trying to bring “socially conservative” people under our tent? That makes no sense.

    • Ainsley7 says:

It really has a lot to do with our education system and single issue voters. Republicans have steadily defunded education while creating the idea that the intellectual elite running the government is a bad thing. Not to mention that they actively spread misinformation fully knowing that their target audience doesn’t have the education to tell the difference. Meanwhile, People who are anti-abortion do not think critically about all the other ways Republicans actively kill people with Medicare cuts, loose gun laws, and all that. They don’t see that as legalizing murder. Education is the only thing that will fix this. There’s a reason Trump openly admitted to loving the uneducated.

      • cer says:

My friend and I had slightly testy exchange about this last night: He’s a mid-50’s Black man who worked several local and statewide Dem campaigns here in Ohio back in the mid 90’s. And he’s been critical of Perez and the DNC. And it’s not as if there’s not been something to criticize about the DNC.
But I pointed out to him what you mentioned, the education, the single issue voters, that Dem turnout was high, but so was the GOP turnout. Which was also the case in 2018.
He admitted he was having to face that the US has a population that’s never going to not be racist, authoritarian and undemocratic. He’s always ‘known’ this, but truly realizing that it’s not getting better is still something he’s having problems with.
When the Dems don’t do well, or as well as expected, sometimes it’s not actually the Dem’s fault. We can’t reach everyone, never have.

      • Josie Bean says:

I would gladly pay more in taxes to support education – that is the key to a healthy society. Plus a universal health care system.

      • BearcatLawyer says:

I have been saying this since Chump was nominated: we need to completely overhaul the US education system. It is truly our only hope to prevent this from happening again.

    • Diana says:

We need to understand how republicans see the world… before developing strategy on how to reach them. They only care about themselves and their pocket books. They don’t give af about anything else and they don’t believe in facts…. it’s all about money. They don’t care about human decency or treating others fairly because their perspective is so limited to their own privilege. They cannot and will not fathom other people’s point of view. That’s where the disconnect is. Democrats on the whole, have empathy and seen beyond themselves. Republicans do not and only see themselves.

      • Amy Too says:

I’m so confused about their money issues because they would pay much less money over their lifetimes for things like college, healthcare, childcare, preschool, funding their own retirement, paying for fossil fuels to heat their homes and run their cars, and even things like car repair bills and buying new tires all the time because of driving on horrible roads. If we dealt with climate change, people wouldn’t have so many emergencies that they have to pay for with their homes being burned or flooded which can truly break someone financially. They would pay a bit more in taxes but they would pay LESS everywhere else. Why don’t people get that? Why do they think they’d still have all the same bills but also have to pay huge tax bills? The taxes are meant to cover the cost of the other things. I feel like so many people don’t get that. Maybe we need to focus much more on how much money everyone would save if Dems were allowed to enact their legislation and big ticket ideas? Because right now I see a lot of people who seem to be extremely confused about that.

      • Diana says:

Amy, great input!!!! I think that is an excellent strategy.

How do we fight against lies and false propaganda from the right that tells people Democrats are just going to raise taxes on everyone and turn America into communism, though? We need something simple and brain dead easy. What you describe is so well thought out but it might be too nuanced for your average trumper.

    • Oh-Dear says:

I have been following the discussions on the Latino/Latinx vote with interest. Anna Navarro and others on MSNBC and CNN as well as on twitter have explained that the Latino vote (nationally) was near 75%, so strong. In Florida, specifically Miami-Dade, the Latino community is predominantly from Cuba and Venezuela, and are very suspicious of socialism and communism and Trump was VERY effective in stirring up distrust for Biden. He is good at identifying people’s fears and stirring them (see also the voter fraud rhetoric and PA).

      • notasugarhere says:

Some Latinx voters in the US are also fervent Catholics – vote for anyone anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ.

  10. Seraphina says:

I too woke up and no news on a winner. I remind myself this is due to a pandemic and people doing their civic duty – voting early while trying protect themselves and others from COVID.
I have been on edge and can’t stop watching the news. It’s like a long movie of good vs. evil for me.
And what is mind boggling is that we may have the first female VP of the US and no one is talking about that because of Trump and his temper tantrums.

    • Chris says:

I was thinking of that too. It’s absolutely historic to have a woman as VP and it’s getting buried in everything else.

Y’all, we’re going to have a woman VP!

      • lucy2 says:

I know, that truly is going to be the big moment for me, watching her get sworn in. I think the historic nature of it is getting a bit swallowed up right now, but it’s coming. I can’t wait to see her sworn in. I know how it’s affecting me, as a 40+ white woman, I simply cannot imagine how it’s going to feel for women of color, and young girls.

  11. Jordana says:

Edit: this comment was @ the commentor who said Biden has dementia. They’ve since deleted their comment! Haha

Really? What’s the evidence? The coherent, calm and thoughtful speech he made, with full sentence? Compare his speech yesterday, with ANY speech by Cheetolini. Then make the dementia diagnosis, doctor.

  12. The Other Sarah says:

Whoops trying to delete my F off comment because I see the original (troll) comment was deleted (thanks mods)!

  13. Miranda says:

I know it’s not certain yet, but I honestly slept better last night than I have in ages. After almost 4 years, there’s finally some light at the end of the tunnel.

  14. SJ Knows says:

My neighbor had a sign in his yard stolen…Veterans Against Trump”
He made a sign that reads “The fact that you stole my sign shows that you are no better than your candidate” I have not met him yet, only moved in a few weeks ago.

The idea that in the ‘Burbs, in central Minnesota, a person would steal a political sign…..this country NEEDS to grow up, act mature, think with reason.

Biden has so much work to do. Bring back decent behavior, lead by example, dignity, speaking calmly with knowledge and rational thought. What a blessing and a mercy it will be to see a POTUS conduct himself as a clear thinking Adult.

I have a cheesecake in the freezer…as soon as it is confirmed Biden, I plan to have at it!

    • Esmom says:

Yes. I think this was in a thread yesterday: that Republicans were referring to election day as Super Bowl Sunday. Too many people see this as a game to be won at all costs, finding sheer entertainment in owning the libs, demonizing the left without any facts they can even articulate AT ALL when pressed. That type of political “engagement” is incredibly destructive. It has broken our country, hopefully not beyond repair.

    • Riley says:

I’m also in Central Minnesota and the number of Trump signs is disheartening… though it absolutely does not surprise me that someone would steal an anti-Trump sign.

  15. Cee says:

Keep The Faith is absolutely brilliant.
However this is never ending and I don’t know how my American celebitches are getting through this counting process without going crazy.

  16. Teebee says:

I just convinced myself that the very slow reveal of vote counts from Biden leaning states is on purpose. That officials behind the scenes know that their results are the deciding ECV that will push Biden over, and with the tensions already reaching breaking point, extra precautions must now be taken in how and when to release this information.

All night they have been able to call states so much sooner than at present because they weren’t election-deciding at the time.

Now is the true conclusion, and due to all the Trump/extremist warning signs, we cannot behave like this is a normal election.

So, that’s what brings me comfort yet also extreme anxiety. I could be wrong, so I’m not celebrating yet. But I feel this growing sense of elation and relief that it is just a matter of time. Biden will be POTUS (I can stop typing POTATUS) and we can all move forward breathing a little easier…

    • Betsy says:

I started crying uncontrollably yesterday when they called Michigan; it’s not over yet, it could still go south (and I mean that in several senses), but relief is finally possible.

  17. Ohpioneer says:

My fear is that when Biden wins anarchy led and fueled by the Orange one will break out especially in hot spots around the country where tensions are already high. He will not go quietly. He may refuse to go at all without force. I pray that I am wrong.

    • Betsy says:

The nice thing is that the law is clear on those points. It’s not like law enforcement has magically been cleansed of its white supremacists, but I think they won’t be so emboldened that they fail to enforce the law. And if he refuses to leave? Big whoop. He gets removed. This is the law.

    • schmootc says:

He can squat in the White House like the toad he is come January 20th, but it won’t mean a damn thing. Biden will be sworn in and will be President, regardless of where he lives.

  18. Kittylouise says:

I don’t know how you guys are coping with the anxiety. It’s so stressful the not knowing.

My family and friends are talking about nothing else, hoping that the votes for Biden and Harris are going to be enough. I’m so impressed with the both of them – they’re good, intelligent, moral and decent people we can look up to and admire.

I’m also hoping selfishly that having Biden and Harris in the US will give inspiration to us in the UK with our hideous shit show of a government. Boris Johnson and his cronies have been inspired by the sheer wilful arrogance and lies of the Trump administration. We unfortunately are stuck with the hideous Johnson for years, hopefully we will have our own decent PM in a few years.

I’m just hoping and praying for Joe and Kamala. (Plus also the EXCITEMENT of the potential of having a female VP!)

  19. Ocho says:

Nevada said they will announce more results starting noon EST… but I thought they allowed mail-in ballots postmarked as late as Nov 3 as long as they arrive by Nov 10, so I was thinking we’d get their final numbers in a week? I don’t know what to do with Nevada info before then.

Arizona not locked up for Biden. Hopefully it go that way, but not certain. On the other hand, Georgia and Pennsylvania (currently leaning Rep as of a few seconds ago) could end up Dem.

Pennsylvania took a week to count votes during the June primary.

Basically, it’s looking promising but we have to pace ourselves.

    • Darla says:

Not good enough. All this does is give trump and barr more time to steal it.

    • hmmmmp says:

So scared for Arizona. I have the feeling we’re gonna lose it and are going to need PA and NV (only 8k lead there eek) or it’s over.

  20. Midnight@theOasis says:

I think people have to wake up to the fact that “Trumpism” is not just going to magically go away and “ decent behavior, dignity, speaking calmly with knowledge and rational thought” is going to happen for those 68 million plus people who voted for Donald Trump. People, white people in particular, need to have a soul cleansing reckoning with each other. Trump is just a manifestation of what has always been here in America…humming along underneath the surface. It’s just been allowed to burst open in full view and Trump has fueled the flames. America has shown the world who it really is and it’s not good.

Professor Eddie Glaude said it best:
    https://www.msnbc.com/deadline-white-house/watch/blaming-trump-is-too-easy-this-is-us-65354309615

    • Peanutbuttr says:

It’s going to be made worse because if Biden wins, there will be a BIPOC woman for VP. White people are triggered when BIPOCs become successful.

      • Anna says:

This! @Peanutbuttr Look what happened with Obama. Harris is a woman and BIPOC. But you know what? She’ll be our VP and I’m going to celebrate that (while also taking every precaution to keep myself and loved ones safe).

    • Edna says:

America needs to stop fighting the Civil War over and over again.

      • Anna says:

        You’re absolutely right @Edna

Tell it to the 64+% of white men who voted for 45. Tell it to the white women who continue supporting him. Tell it to the Latinx and Asian voters who think white adjacency will save them. I’m so, so, so tired. 🙁

    • bluemoonhorse says:

Biden better be ready to fight like hell every inch of the way because if not, nothing will be gained with this presidency.

    • Veronica S. says:

Nope, all this election revealed to me is that we’re going to be fighting to stand still for the next ten years. We’ve got a lot of internal problems to fix here.

  21. Peanutbuttr says:

I’m very nervous right now. Not feeling too good about Arizona. Georgia will probably come to the wire.

  22. Other Renee says:

Haven’t slept in two days and my stomach is in knots. The Nevada situation is stressing me beyond belief. Biden is ahead by less than 8000 votes. The Libertarian candidate has over 10k votes so I can’t help but think that those are wasted votes that might have otherwise gone to Biden. I realize it’s those voters’ right to vote as they see fit but lack of sleep and overall stress are removing my sense of the rational.

    • Anna says:

Same here on the stress front (in addition to waiting for biopsy results :()
Libertarian voters live here. They have experienced and witnessed what has happened the last four years, and they still decided to split the vote. No sympathy from me for their b.s. I’m sorry but we are not in a position to be indulging a multi-party system. This election was a choice between evil/death/horror and the possibility of a future. End of story.

  23. jen says:

Yes, and he should stop it.
And I told Rick Wilson, one of the founders of the Lincoln Project, who is also behaving this way, to please stop. Trump is a Dictator. He will not relent-ever. We are doomed. Evil has infiltrated this country and it’s not leaving. Told him that his hope hurts and it’s slowly going to murder us, instead of us being killed quickly which would be more merciful.
Then I wake up to Bakari Sellers acting like this, too.
I respect both men, but they need to stop!

  24. Veronica S. says:

My outlook isn’t as positive considering Pennsylvania is looking to swing red for a second election, and that does not bode well for 2022 for us when we have both a Senate seat and a gubernatorial election coming. Young people are just not showing up to vote, and I don’t know if the situation can be fixed long-term if they aren’t willing to use their newfound voting power to do it. Democrats may need to start counting Pennsylvania out of future elections as a dependable zone. Our future is looking hard right due to fracking industry and youth apathy, unfortunately.

I’m quietly deciding what exactly I plan on doing next, whether it’s going to be moving to the West Coast or seriously considering going to graduate school outside the country to start an immigration process. My mother has lived in Pennsylvania all her life, yet this is the first time she stated that we may need to move. This election feels less like a victory and more like getting by on the skin of our teeth.

    • Darla says:

Agree. I consider a Biden win a short reprieve, during which I need to plan very carefully.

      • Veronica S. says:

They showed up better than they did in 2016, but exit polls are still showing older voters made up the bulk of the vote there, which means we owe it to a shift on the older voting side for how we got here. I’m hoping those numbers shift a little more as the final votes are tallied, but it’s still an unsettling dissonance between the performative displays we see online versus who is actually showing up. Millennials and Gen Z really need to get their act together if they really want to reform the party to something that builds a progressive future.

      • Midnight@the Oasis says:

I’m not putting much stock in exit polls. They’re no more reliable than the pre election polls. Exit polls taken during a pandemic when millions voted by mail are unreliable IMO.

      • Veronica S. says:

I’d prefer to be wrong, but I am worried, guys. Democrats are notorious for not showing up to midterms with the same force as Republicans, and that needs to change in 2022 if anything is to get done. We can’t pretend we don’t know what McConnell is going to do for the next two years if he has a Senate majority, however slim. I really hope we’ve learned our lesson, but damn, what a climb we have ahead of us to get out of this mess.

  25. Leah says:

I wish it would just end. Give Joe Pennsylvania or Nevada or Arizona. Dude is like 6 points away from 270. If he hadn’t already claimed the 55 from my state I’d give him 6 more just to get this election over with. Nevada is killing me because they decided to wait until today with the results. What is so hard about this, Reno and Las Vegas always lean blue and Las Vegas is the largest city in the state.

Saw footage of trump supporters standing outside the poll counting center loaded to bear and I thought to myself “my god, if Arizona doesn’t swing their way they really are going to do something to those poll workers”. There was no reason for that guy to bring an automatic weapon except for intimidation, he had it slung across his shoulders like some jcrew rambo or something.

I don’t see the libs storming the poll counting stations in these states. It’s the fruitcake trump supporters and their need to start something over what has always been a democratic process. More people voted in this election than in any election in our history and it was for a very good reason.

    • Chris says:

Apparently Nevada waited until all the vote was counted to prevent the trump campaign from suing to stop the count. Preventative measures.

    • Josie Bean says:

“There was no reason for that guy to bring an automatic weapon except for intimidation, he had it slung across his shoulders like some jcrew rambo or something.”

That makes me so goddamn mad that anyone would bring a gun to the counting center, yeah like Rambo or something. It is disgusting and if Trump had an ounce of decency he would tell them to go home and never bring their weapons out for that purpose again. Should have called out the National Guard to deal with these juvenile men.

  26. FilmTurtle says:

Yeah, this waiting is interminable and the fact that 45 is still in contention is terrifying.

HOWEVER, let’s look at this way: an incumbent who is barely clinging to their lead is a very, very good thing for the challenger and says a LOT about public sentiment for the incumbent.

Also, the Republicans successfully suppressed the vote in a dozen different ways. (People are forgetting this ALREADY, judging by Twitter.)

Also, Biden has received more popular votes than ANY presidential candidate in history. (Apologies if others have already pointed this out upthread.)

  27. Teebee says:

Perhaps… due to the escalating tensions and few numb nuts that are taking to the vote counting centres still in operation, each state has an announcement plan involving counting every last vote so there is no questioning the results and then evacuating/ensuring all staff are carefully removed to their respective safe spaces. Because I think this is the end of Trump. And he has proven unpredictable and unstable, and who knows what he will incite or inspire in his fervent followers.

He clearly has no problem endangering the lives of staff that are doing nothing but ensuring a job well done. But hopefully the officials on the ground know that no precaution at this time is too over the top to make sure everyone is safe.

  28. Also Ali says:

    Pennsylvania!!!!!!

  29. Allie says:

Arizona is still too close to call.

    • Josie Bean says:

      AP election update shows:
AZ 88% Biden leads by 68,390
NV 75% Biden leads by 7,647

Problem is I have no idea how many more votes they have to count. But I think AZ looks OK. A bit concerned with NV.

      • Allie says:

Apart from AP and Fox no other media outlet declared a winner in those states. Trump leads PA by more than 100k and so many people still have hope because there are tons of ballots still to be counted. The problem really is how many are left.

I have no idea why the authors of this page keep celebrating while nothing is decided yet. This easily can turn out to be another 2016.

      • Peanutbuttr says:

Biden added to his lead in Nevada (now up to 12k) and the remaining votes are in Reno and Vegas, which is very blue

      • lucy2 says:

I think we’re in good shape for both, plus PA, and possibly GA.

I know this is agonizing, but we’re going to know soon. 20 years ago in the Bush Gore election, it took over a MONTH. That’s not happening this time.

  30. JustFacts says:

Only a white male could behave as Trump has as President and get away with it. Obama would have been removed from office and probably thrown on jail.

  31. Giddy says:

I truly believe that it will be called for Biden today. It’s a good thing because my stress eating is out of control, and the past two nights I’ve been making frozen Margaritas. I need to be delivered from my own worst impulses!

  32. Juju says:

I can’t believe how many people voted for Trump. That’s so embarassing for all Americans.

    • Lolamd says:

I am just so disheartened by it.

    • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Yeah I think I’m going to buy a t-shirt that says something akin to, ‘I hated that orange c@nt,’ and wear it whenever I’m in public lol.

    • Lizzie says:

I know a few. Some are financially conservative. Some are contrary and vote against the tide. Luckily I don’t know the nazi’s or white supremesist.
I also know someone dear to me who voted for trump and will throw you out of his house if you say anything about black people.

  33. Jess says:

I got chills listening to Biden’s speech the other night, and felt so inspired by the idea of no red or blue, only United States. It felt nice to feel like I mattered again. I didn’t even realize how much I’ve missed that feeling the last 4 years, and missed having a president who speaks calmly and eloquently. Trump is fkng mean all the time, and he only cares about republicans, that’s the half the country he didn’t care about, and I hope we remember that if Biden wins. Yes I strongly disagree with how the other side thinks on a lot of issues, but we have to find middle ground somewhere if we want to have peace here again, we have to listen to each other.

I’m so over this election and ready to know who won, I’m still not letting myself feel hope for Biden, not until the moving truck is out front of the White House will I be relieved.

  34. Lizzie says:

Since it is looking good for Biden I have felt it’s like the World Series where your team is up and has gone one for three days.
While I want it to end in Biden’s favor I haven’t hated the last few days.

  35. NicDix says:

It’s not over til it’s over. Hard to relax with things as they currently stand. Trump has been known to pull of the impossible.

  36. L4frimaire says:

My stomach is in knots over this. This is agonizing. The counting is so slow and I blame the GOP statehouses that set this system up so Mail in ballots were counted last. A senator posted on Twitter that the FAA has placed a protective airspace bubble over Wilmington Delaware, where Biden lives, which they would only do for the President or President elect. AP and Fox is still standing by their Arizona calls, and Nevada is messing with us now. I don’t want to go through this again.

    • Leah says:

      Re: the airspace.

Wow. That’s good to hear because with all the crazy magats running around who knows what could happen.

I have such high hopes for Clark County, it’s so large, populous and blue. Vegas.

  37. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

    What’s the latest? I can’t look.

  38. Mrs. Smith says:

Georgia is getting closer! Waiting for Savannah (a blue county) to complete their count. Penn is rolling toward Biden and erasing Trump’s early lead. AZ is still officially in play (maybe?). At 5 pm, Nevada just added 12,000 votes for Biden (increasing his lead).

    • Val says:

The waiting is killing me. I pray that this nightmare comes to an end tonight. I understand that there will be chaos, but a Biden win is a step in the right direction. New Yorkers are already protesting.

    • Mrs. Smith says:

ETA: it’s funny how eroded my sense of governmental decency is since Trump. The state polls still counting say they “have integrity and want do this right” and they “have an obligation to the American people.” I LOL’d at how foreign those concepts have become. I forgot that how it’s SUPPOSED to work.

  39. Irishgal says:

I gotta admit as an outsider looking in its very shocking to see how close this race is. I’m really hoping you guys get Biden across the line but it feels like it’s gonna be anticlimactic knowing just under half of your country are in fact genuinely still confirmed racists and Nazi sympathisers ☹️

    • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

For realz. I’m in Texas and my best friend moved to Boston. We were texting this morning and she’s like me. We’re at a loss and in mourning knowing that, for a fact, we despise half of the country.

    • schmootc says:

I too am horrified at how things have gone. I really thought it would be more 70/30 or maybe 60/40. But this? I do not understand how so many people (not just his cult) looked at the last four years and said yes, I’d like to do that again. It’s unfathomable.

      • Val says:

This is the real America. When it comes down to it, most white folks will choose their privilege over anything else. America was born out of violence and death. It was never a great country. It’s always been racist and divided, the only thing that’s changed is the invention of the internet.

    • Jezebeelzebub says:

Yeah, it feels extremely shitty. It feels so shitty that I really think I need a new career- pronto. I dont want to care for the people in my community anymore. (I work in healthcare.) I’m so goddamned disappointed and disillusioned- I could overlook voting for Trump once, before we knew for sure what that would mean for the country. But TWICE? After the last 4 years?? No. Theres no defense for that.

  40. Jezebeelzebub says:

Tuesday night I just lay in bed with the cold sweats until it was time for me to get up for work. Sometime this afternoon, the migraine thats been circling landed. I think its gonna hang out until Biden is declared….. or maybe until he takes office, I don’t know.

I’m so friggin afraid to hope, yall. What the fuck are we gonna do if the worst happens? I dont think theres enough Prozac in the world to feed the sudden demand if the nation is force fed another 4 years of what we’ve had.

Also, the current administration will still be in the White House for another 2 months even if Biden is all set to move in. I feel like Something Terrible is going to happen to the White House. Like Biden will get there and it will be on fire, or there will be excrement smeared on the walls and the Oval Office will look like the primate exhibit at a crappy zoo. That’s OUR house, yall, and I think it’ll be a miracle if it’s still standing after the current resident is forced to move out. Anyone else feel that way?
