DM: Duchess Meghan’s 2020 wardrobe cost about $60K, including jewelry

meghan theatre1

At the end of every year for the past nine years, we’ve gotten the Daily Mail’s calculation of what the Duchess of Cambridge spent on clothing for the year. While taxpayers are not technically paying for Kate’s clothing, she’s not spending her own money on it either – the Prince of Wales finances his daughter-in-law’s clothing and it’s not like Kate has any kind of allowance. In 2020, she spent about $127K on new frocks, coats, coatdresses, sister-wife gear and ridiculous ‘80s secretary ensembles, and I think the DM underestimated that figure. All of which is remarkable considering how much of the year Kate was not in the public eye, and she was just doing one or two Zoom calls a week. In any case, I didn’t even believe the $127K number – that’s just the Mail’s calculation based on what we’ve seen her wear, not what she actually bought during the year.

Anyway, the point of all that Kate talk was that for the brief time the Duchess of Sussex was around, fashion and the cost of clothing was a huge conversation in the British media. Meghan, like Kate, had a wardrobe financed by Charles and yet… the British media always made a huge f–king deal about what Meghan’s wardrobe cost. It wasn’t just a mild criticism of “both Kate and Meghan are spending too much on clothes,” it was “how dare Meghan, a Black American woman, have nice things!” Considering Meghan and Harry were all “smell ya later” in March 2020, I figured that the Mail would do some kind of story on wardrobe costs, but they would end their tally in March, since Charles was no longer financing Meghan’s wardrobe in any capacity beyond that point. Not so much.

Since she married Prince Harry two years ago Meghan Markle has worn a parade of designer outfits from brands such as Dior, Givenchy, Prada and Chanel and an array of expensive accessories. But after quitting the royal family in March and moving to California, the Duchess has taken a decidedly different approach to her wardrobe.

Meghan has slashed the value of the new items she has worn this year, with Femail calculating the royal has won new items of clothing and jewellery worth £44,188 in 2020. It is a drastic reduction on last year, when her wardrobe was valued at more than £211,693. Her most expensive outfit came during her farewell tour in March, when she stepped out for lunch at The Goring in an high fashion ensemble worth £14,000.

While a working member of the royal family, the cost of Meghan’s clothes for work engagements was covered by Prince Charles through the budget he gave the couple from the Duchy of Cornwall. But after the couple said they wanted to be financially independent, it is not clear who is picking up the bill for Meghan’s clothes, or whether the Duchess always pays full price for her clothing, or receives discounts from designers.

[From The Daily Mail]

£44,188 is roughly $60K. Which is a lot, and that’s why the Mail did the story and tried to compile the costs. But of course there are fundamental problems with the way the DM calculates this figure. As I said, post-March, Charles wasn’t paying for Meghan’s clothing. Meghan and Harry are paying for their own wardrobes now, so the DM is just baiting haters and incorrectly nitpicking Meghan about the costs of her outfits post-March (“Woman spends her own money on her wardrobe, GASP!”). I’d also like to point out (again) another issue I’ve had with the way the DM compiles these numbers: they take into account every single piece of jewelry Meghan wears, and they play fast and loose with the jewelry costs and who bought the pieces and when. I would guess that Meghan had a nice jewelry collection before she even became a duchess, and she’s added to the collection with gifts from Harry, pieces she likely bought herself, and maybe some that Charles paid for too. But the DM treats every piece as brand-new and their projections of jewelry costs were always hyper-inflated just for Meghan.

Meghan has reworn a lot of her Pre royal wardrobe in 2020. I also agree about the jewelry, most of it was hers or gifts from Harry (who probably bought them with his own money or inherited from Diana).

    • BayTampaBay says:

Jewelry should not be counted as jewelry is a lifetime investment or heritage as Lady Colin Campbell and The Daily Fail call it.

    • GR says:

@snuffles – Thanks; I was just wondering if she’d gotten out her old clothes again.

  2. Dee says:

She’s also invested in separates, which are much more versatile than a buttony coatdress for wearing again.

  3. Tiffany says:

For a press that is not interested in Harry and Meghan, they sure are doing the research.

    • Indiesr says:

Exactly! They sit around like vultures with baited breath for anything they can publish on this “irrelevant” couple.

  4. Mina_Esq says:

It’s honestly not that much in the grand scheme of things. When you’re buying designer, getting one new coat, boots and a purse for the season will easily set you back $10,000. If Meghan has been able to duchess for $60,000 last year, it must mean that she has been repeating a lot of items. Likely all those quality separates into which she invested.

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

And we can’t forget a LOT of Kate’s wardrobe is “bespoke” so they’re not even counting that at ALL! They have no real tally, just as they don’t have a tally for Petty Betty’s wardrobe/hats as they’re all hand made for her.

      • windyriver says:

Re: TQ – last year when I read Angela Kelly’s book, I looked up the shop where she mentioned she and Stuart Parvin frequently got material for her dresses. My recollection is the simpler stuff was listed at 100 pounds per yard, minimum. Then there’s the custom made hats, likely her shoes as well, and handbags, PLUS the colored umbrellas matched to her outfits.

At least with TQ they know they can leave the jewelry cost out of the equation.

      • molly says:

I suspect that while “bespoke” is more expensive for the common person, “bespoke” is actually CHEAPER for Kate. The amount of press Catherine Walker gets when Kate wears her stuff is invaluable. I’m sure she’s happy to sell coats to Kate at cost or a deep discount.

      • Can you imagine spending as much money as Kate does on clothing, plus all the bespoke hidden costs, and still looking that frumpy?

      • derps says:

Yes, and at least Meghan and Harry pay for it themselves, the British public is not on the hook for anything unlike wardrobes for Willy-Nilly and Cain’t and all the rest of those useless artifacts.

    • schmootc says:

I saw the total and thought yeah, it’s not that much money in the scheme of things when you consider how much designer clothes cost. And the after they moved to the States, it’s nobody’s business at all how much she spends on things anyway. Leave the woman alone already!

  5. BeanieBean says:

“it is not clear who is picking up the bill for Meghan’s clothes”. Are they that dumb? She’s buying her own clothes. Geez Louise. And she’s a private citizen of the US. Right? Like they wanted?

    • Amy Bee says:

They wrote that because they still want to push the false story that Charles is still funding her and Harry.

    • Mina_Esq says:

Lol I know, right? Is it so hard to understand that adults with jobs can buy their own clothes ?!

    • Becks1 says:

Right?!?? That is the stupidest comment of this whole slew of royal stories today. its such a mystery! who is picking up the tab for Meghan’s clothes!! WHO COULD IT BE?!!?!?

Hello, Meghan had money before she married Harry and she has more money now, thanks to Spotify and Netflix, so she’s buying her own damn clothes, TYVM.

    • MF1 says:

They just can’t come out and say it because it kills them that she’s success and financially independent outside of the RF. So instead, they’re being vague to imply that Charles is still footing the bill.

    • Myra says:

Meghan’s wardrobe could cost a million and it would still be none of their business. I don’t see them tallying the cost of wardrobe of other famous people.

    • Lizzie says:

Men who pay for a woman’s wardrobe, not his wife or daughter. Prince Charles, sugar daddies.

  6. windyriver says:

I like the idea that Charles may have had to foot the bill for the fabulous blue, red and green dresses Meghan wore in their farewell tour early in the year, since that obviously burned Kate so much she immediately tried to compete with her own outfit in the same shade of blue (the book buying PR op). Technically Harry and Meghan were still working royals at that point.

But it’s just as likely Meghan paid for them herself, so she could do what she wanted and not feel beholden to anyone else.

    • Amy Bee says:

I have no proof but I tend to believe that Meghan probably bought her own clothes while she was in the UK.

  7. Amy Bee says:

The price of her outfit to the Goring is definitely overinflated and I agree the pricing of what Meghan wore in 2020 should have ended at the last appearance she represented the Queen which was the Commonwealth Day Service.

  8. Sof says:

Is Meghan allowed to accept gifts now? I’m sure there are plenty of designers/brands dying to dress her.

    • Ann says:

I don’t see why not but she might not want to do it because of the hate it would bring. Which is silly because she was being asked to wear free stuff by designers before she even met Harry.

  9. Jodi says:

i don’t know why they are calculating how much she spends on clothing at this point since the majority of the year (and here on out) she’s spending her own dollar on her clothing so frankly it’s nobody’s business how much she spends or not. this is ridiculous.

  10. S808 says:

Why are the calculating her wardrobe post sussexit? It’s not like taxpayers are paying for it. And yeah, Meghan has jewelry, shoes, clothes and bags pre-Harry that are very expensive. It’s like that when you’re a self-made millionaire. I’m sure they know it’s pieces she came into the relationship with but they add it in any to drive up the cost. She could spend $100K a day on an outfit for all I care now, it’s not on anyone else’s dime anymore.

    • Becks1 says:

They’re going to add up her wardrobe costs every year for the foreseeable future. It’s disgusting.

  11. Cecilia says:

I see that the he usual suspect have started 2021 with a little bit more force behind the hate campaign. What wrong with the DM? Is the lawsuit not going their way?

  12. Nic919 says:

If they added jewelry to Kate’s totals as they do for Meghan, then Kate would have been at 200k for sure. She always has a new piece of expensive jewelry when she wears a repeat outfit.

In any case Meghan is buying her own clothes so they need to drop this. Focus on the one who has never earned her own money in her entire life.

  13. Lizzie says:

No matter their relationship why would Charles support Harry after Harry signed the first hundred million dollar contract? Harry left to support himself, as he has said.
Meghan and Harry make their own money and buy their own home and clothes. They don’t mooch off of the taxpayers.

  14. Becks1 says:

I’m waiting for the comments about how Meghan is spending less on clothes now that Charles isn’t picking up the tab – but of course her spending was less this year, after March, she hasn’t done any public appearances that would require her to wear even semi-fancy clothes, thanks to the whole pandemic thing. We’ve seen her in a lot of separates and classic pieces on zoom calls and when we HAVE seen her out and about, she’s usually in jeans (or shorts!)

I honestly feel like just responding “there is a pandemic!” in response to so many of these anti-Sussex stories. Harry has been hiding in California – there is a pandemic! Harry hasn’t been doing a lot of public events – there is a pandemic! Meghan hasn’t worn as much Givenchy this year – there is a pandemic!!!!

    • Lauren says:

“Harry should be in the UK supporting his family during covid” there is a pandemic! What is his family even doing to support the UK during the pandemic? Why should they play the supporting cast to his horrible family story?

      • Lizzie says:

Ha, Harry knows to stay home or only go out wearing a mask during a pandemic. He would not have participated in their reindeer games if he was in the UK.

    • lucy2 says:

I’m curious why Kate’s is still so expensive, considering the whole world has been locked down for most of the year, and her appearances have been minimal.

Meghan is paying for her own stuff now, so she can wear whatever she wants.

      • Becks1 says:

Great question @Lucy2 – especially considering its only based on what we have SEEN Kate wear. considering most of her appearances were Zooms (so we only saw the blouse/sweater) – how did she spend so much money? She did seem to spend a great deal on her ugly dresses, but over 100k worth??

Does anyone know if Kate’s clothes from the Ireland tour were included?

    • Ann says:

I know I’ve spent most of the past nine months in jeans, very casual dresses (during the summer), work-out clothes and pajamas!

  15. Wetcoastbestcoast says:

Listen, the way I see it, that $60,000 could have been spent ONLY on the “Could’ve had a Bad Bitch” tour wardrobe, and it would have been worth EVERY…SINGLE…PENNY.

    Seriously flawless.

  17. Lizzie says:

I don’t really understand why this is a thing. Who cares how much a person spends on their clothes in a year? Does this go back to Kate so obviously buying bespoke every time she turned around?

    • Nic919 says:

It was originally an issue for Kate because she has no money and barely does royal work so they were totalling up annual costs to show how lazy she was and not giving the UK taxpayers their moneys worth. Once Meghan arrived they tried to change the narrative and condemn Meghan while forgetting that their girl still does nothing and still spends a lot of their money needlessly even during a pandemic.

  18. Amelie says:

And what are they going to do end of 2021? Meghan spends x amount of money on her own wardrobe?? It makes for a pretty boring article. Yeah, I know, they’ll harp on her designer wear (if she wears any), her expensive jewelry, her lack of British designers or find something stupid for New Year’s. It would be so amazing if she only wore clothes from places like the Gap or J. Crew for the entirety of 2021. Or if she just kept rewearing the same 7-8 outfits publicly. I just really want to see her troll the UK media.

  19. Merricat says:

Meghan spent half what Kate spent and looked ten times better, except the taxpayers footed the bill for Kate’s. Laugh’s on them.

  20. Kalana says:

Meghan worked and earned her own money so she could say Sayonara Zara and anyone who doesn’t like it can seethe.

  21. Mia says:

My favourite thing about Meghan’s wardrobe this past year was when they released a portrait where she was wearing a Cartier watch – and no one could tell if it was princess Diana’s, OR HER OWN THAT SHE BOUGHT BEFORE MEETING HARRY.

    Boss move imo ❤️😍

  22. Gail says:

Is the daily mail going to tally up the cost and
brand of her underwear next? I mean here does this sickly disgusting obsession to put Meghan in her place end ?

  23. Harla says:

I don’t care what Meghan spent on her clothes, that Farewell Tour wardrobe was perfect!!

  24. megs283 says:

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Spends 60K on wardrobe: OH THE WASTE, OH THE HORROR
Spends 60k on wardrobe: NOW that she’s not getting things paid for by Charles, she’s spending less

    These people are so toxic.

Long live the Sussexes! Thank you for making the US a better place. 🙂

  25. MA says:

British tabloid calculations of Meghan’s wardrobe have been proven incorrect in the past. Wouldn’t be surprised if they counted each time she wore her Cartier bracelet. Plus Meghan is not taxpayer funded so who gives AF.

  26. BnLurkN4eva says:

She and her husband are no longer working royals. The BM said they were irrelevant and if they couldn’t stand the daily abuse they should quit and leave, they did. They are making their own money, obviously paying their own way so why are the BM continuing to stalk the irrelevant ex-royals they claimed the Sussexes to be?

  27. Mignionette says:

Lol – including jewelry and clothing she already owned.

They’re so desperate to elevate Kate to sainthood that they write these shitty nonsensical pieces.

How sad it must be to be Kate and need this much embiggening to exist on a daily basis. I’d be permanently embarrassed.

  28. Hello Kitty says:

I don’t find this number offensive, just me? My credit card shows I spent $10,000 on shopping in 2020 (I had a pregnant and then a postpartum body to dress professionally) and my husband gave me some pretty fat diamond studs for Christmas (push present). I just don’t find $60,000 that much for people who have millions of dollars.
